I Lost My Hair
By Caitlin - Age 13 | Ready to "wear it out loud?” Merch store open, SHOP NOW: http://bit.ly/storybooth-merch | Subscribe: http://bit.ly/sub2storybooth | Record your story @ https://storybooth.com or our iPhone app for a chance to get animated. Comment, like, share this story. Caitlin was born with a condition called Alopecia, which basically means that her hair follicles (the roots) didn't quite work right and she never grew any hair on her head. She didn't really have hair loss, her hair literally never grew in the first place. This is a story time about a girl with no hair. There are different types of Alopecia - one kind where your hair grows back and then falls out again, and one kind where it doesn't grow in at all. Caitlin had the kind where it doesn't grow in at all, and so, growing up, she was bald. "I've totally lost my hair, my hair is gone," she thought. Hair loss is a really tough thing to deal with in our society especially at such a young age. Balding, makes you different as a kid when all you want to do is fit in. It was hard having to go through her childhood with no hair. She had to wear wigs, which she didn't like, and when she would be hanging out with her friends and they would say, "lets get our hair done" and she would be really sad because she would be missing out. In school, people were mean to her as well as being her friends. People would pull off her wig in front of everyone and laugh at her, her bald head. Why were kids so mean? Mean girls, mean boys. and mean people would stare at her. They would be pointing, staring, laughing. It made her so sad, depressed and hurt her self esteem. She thought, "I can't believe they pulled off my wig. Why is everyone staring at me? I lost my hair, thats all." She knew she looked different than other people but she was still a person just like everyone else. But all was ultimately okay as Caitlin learned that with difficult things, often come good things. She could not and did not get head lice. Kids in her school class got head lice and she never had to even get checked, because she had no hair! Thats a benefit to being bald as a kid. She never had to get treated for head lice, she never had head lice because she just did not have hair. She laughs about it as it's one of the things being bald as a kid has over kids with hair. She learned about the Rapunzel Foundation, who like Locks of Love, takes in donated hair from people who donate their hair, in order to make wigs for people. A wig is made from real human hair so it looks as real as a wig can and helps people feel better about themselves. Then some amazing happened...When Caitlin turned 10, her hair started to grow!!! It continued to grow and when it was long enough, she got hair extensions and finally had hair! LONG hair. No longer a balk kid, she felt more like everyone else. As her hair continued to grow, she got rid of the extensions in her hair got it hair trimmed / styled and now looks and feels like everyone else with a full head of hair. It was a dream come true for her. She had her own head of hair and as a result was so happy and so confident! "I lost my hair but now I have a full head of hair. I am lucky, grateful and so happy." Alopecia made the first part Caitlin's life tough but it also helped her see the world in a way that many others never will. When you get something everyone else has that you never have, like sight, hearing or hair, you can appreciate it an a very different level. Being grateful in a very special and unique way. No Time to Lose campaign
Cancer caused by work claims the lives of 666,000 people a year worldwide. Hear Dr Lesley Rushton on work-related cancer in the UK, meet some of the people affected by carcinogenic exposures, and find out what IOSH is calling for as part of the No Time to Lose campaign. Find out more and get free resources at http://tinyurl.com/NoTimeToLose-website http://tinyurl.com/NTTL-film-transcript Transcript I was told that I had one of the worst types of cancer because, at the moment, there’s just no cure.  Once you get diagnosed with it, it’s for life. You’re always living in fear that it’s going to come back. You’re living under a death sentence. I am 66 years old and I am dying. These cancers are largely predictable and preventable, and they’re happening right now. They occur in industries across the board, like building and construction, manufacturing, transport, defence and agriculture.  Our research – it’s the most complete study of its kind in the world – we factored in other causes of death such as smoking, and our conclusion is that there is a clear connection between the jobs we do and the risks of developing cancer. We believe that there is essentially no safe exposure to asbestos and for that reason it’s clearly a very dangerous carcinogen. When we look historically at the sorts of exposure that patients have had, for example, many can’t describe any definitive exposure through employment. Some, of course, will have it through employment. Some will have been exposed indirectly through others that have perhaps been employed, or downstream – perhaps in a factory, that sort of thing – where the asbestos could have been carried from the air, for example. Mesothelioma I’d never heard of until I was diagnosed. And apparently I’ve picked this up through employment, as some 30 to 40 years ago, so I would be in my mid-20s, and I would have picked it up being an electrical engineer within factories. I felt healthy, apart from the breathlessness, and the surgeon told me I’d got an incurable disease and I’d got less than a year. I was a school teacher, taught in a number of schools, and I was quite surprised, actually, because my surgeon said that there are quite a number of school teachers and architects who get mesothelioma. Nobody knows how I got it, but maybe pinning up notices on the notice board? I understand that notice boards were quite often made of asbestos. When you get told something like you’ve got malignant melanoma, the very name is frightening in itself – ‘malignant’. My first excessive sun exposure happened when I served in the Merchant Navy and there was no awareness back then of protection. We weren’t taught about sun cream, we were basically left to your own design.  The risk from workplace cancers is more widespread than most people think. They’ve been cancers, some of them fatal, due to exposure to mineral oils, welding fumes, coal tars and pitches, and dioxins.  Our No Time To Lose campaign aims to get work-related cancer better understood, and by directing people to appropriate resources we hope to equip people with the relevant tools to prevent work-related cancer. We believe that we can beat occupational cancer if we work together to control the exposure to risks, so whether you’re an employer, an employee, an industry body or a policy maker, a health and safety professional or an occupational hygienist, we all have our part to play if we are going to call time on occupation-caused cancers.

What Happens To Your Body And Brain If You Don't Get Sleep
Sleep expert Matthew Walker breaks down the many effects of sleep deprivation on your brain and body. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is the transcript of the video: Matthew Walker: My name is Matthew Walker, I am a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and I am the author of the book "Why We Sleep." We certainly know that a lack of sleep will actually prevent your brain from being able to initially make new memories, so it's almost as though without sleep the memory inbox of the brain shuts down and you can't commit new experiences to memory. So those new incoming informational emails are just bounced, and you end up feeling as though you're amnesiac. You can't essentially make and create those new memories. We also know that a lack of sleep will lead to an increased development of a toxic protein in the brain that is called beta amyloid and that is associated with Alzheimer's disease because it is during deep sleep at night when a sewage system within the brain actually kicks in to high gear and it starts to wash away this toxic protein, beta amyloid. So if you're not getting enough sleep each and every night, more of that Alzheimer's-related protein will build up. The more protein that builds up, the greater your risk of going on to develop dementia in later life. What are the effects of sleep deprivation on the body? Well, there are many different effects. Firstly, we know that sleep deprivation affects the reproductive system. We know that men who are sleeping just five to six hours a night have a level of testosterone which is that of someone ten years their senior. So a lack of sleep will age you by almost a decade in terms of that aspect of virility and wellness. We also know that a lack of sleep impacts your immune system. So after just one night of four to five hours of sleep, there is a 70% reduction in critical anticancer-fighting immune cells called natural killer cells. And that's the reason that we know that short sleep duration predicts your risk for developing numerous forms of cancer. And that list currently includes cancer of the bowel, cancer of the prostate, as well as cancer of the breast. In fact, the link between a lack of sleep and cancer is now so strong that recently the World Health Organization decided to classify any form of nighttime shift work as a probable carcinogen. So in other words, jobs that may induce cancer because of a disruption of your sleep rate rhythms. We also know that a lack of sleep impacts your cardiovascular system because it is during deep sleep at night that you receive this most wonderful form of effectively blood pressure medication. Your heart rate drops, your blood pressure goes down. If you're not getting sufficient sleep, you're not getting that reboot of the cardiovascular system, so your blood pressure rises. You have, if you're getting six hours of sleep or less, a 200% increased risk of having a fatal heart attack or stroke in your lifetime. There is a global experiment that is performed on 1.6 billion people twice a year and it's called daylight saving time. And we know that in the spring, when we lose one hour of sleep, we see a subsequent 24% increase in heart attacks the following day. Another question, perhaps, is what is the recycle rate of a human being? How long can we actually last without sleep before we start to see declines in your brain function or even impairments within your body? And the answer seems to be about 16 hours of wakefulness. Once you get past 16 hours of being awake, that's when we start to see mental deterioration and physiological deterioration in the body. We know that after you've been awake for 19 or 20 hours, your mental capacity is so impaired that you would be as deficient as someone who was legally drunk behind the wheel of a car. So if you were to ask me what is the recycle rate of a human being, it does seem to be about 16 hours and we need about eight hours of sleep to repair the damage of wakefulness. Wakefulness essentially is low-level brain damage.

My survival story -- what I learned from having cancer | Martin Inderbitzin | TEDxZurich
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Martin Inderbitzin was 32 years old, with a fresh PhD degree, a new job and about to start a new life when he was suddenly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He had to go through surgery and endure nine months of radiochemotherapy. While coping with his new situation and challenging his many fears he realized how important his own state of mind was. In the middle of his treatment, when he was barely able to walk, he decided to sign up for a triathlon, despite never having seriously practiced endurance sports before. Today, he says this was one of the most important decisions of his life. With this new goal in mind he quickly realized the positive effect it had on his mental and physiological state. He tried to figure out how to‚train‘, while still being under treatment. After he had left the hospital his energy slowly returned and his training became more serious. Three months after the end of his treatment, Martin crossed the finish line of his first triathlon. Today, Martin is an enthusiastic Amateur-Triathlete, competing regularly in races around the globe. During his time as a patient Martin was inspired by stories from other patients who had lived through the same hassle. While crossing the finish line of his first race he realized that he himself had become an inspiration for other patients. This life changing moment gave Martin the idea to start his initiative: to collect and document cancer survival stories in the form of short videos and make them available to other patients and their families on an online platform. Martin Inderbitzin studied biology at the ETH Zurich and did his PhD in Neuroscience at UPF Barcelona with a special focus on artificial emotions and human computer interaction. After his studies in Spain he moved back to his home town Zurich and started to work as an interaction designer. In 2012 his dreams of a successful career were destroyed by a cancer diagnosis. While in treatment he decided to become a triathlete despite never having practiced this sport before. Since he left the hospital in 2013 he has completed multiple races and is enjoying his health again. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Tony Robbins: How To Overcome Emotional Crisis (Tony Robbins Depression)
Tony Robbins: How To Overcome Emotional Crisis (Tony Robbins Depression) What is the single force that shapes the quality of our lives? What power do we have that can change everything? As you and I both know, the answer is the power of choice. During the past 30 years I’ve had the privilege of working with an incredibly diverse group of people, from presidents of countries to professional athletes, from managers to moms, from gang members to high-powered business executives. I’ve had the unique opportunity to see people in the midst of real challenges, whether it’s the professional athlete who wants to regain his competitive edge, the business leader who wants to expand her influence or the political leader who struggles with a difficult decision. I may not have all the answers (who does?), but after working with so many people and observing the patterns that make them succeed or fail, one thing I am sure of is this: It is our decisions, not our conditions, that determine the quality of our lives. Take a look at your own life. Are you where you want to be? Are you as healthy or financially secure or as happy in your relationships as you would like to be? Or, even if things are going well, are you looking for that extra edge to retain the competitive advantage? Perhaps you feel that in spite of your success, there’s more out there for you, but for some reason, you haven’t grasped it yet. Your first instinct may be to blame the economy, or the housing market, or someone who has treated you unfairly. Before we go any further, we need to understand that we are where we are today because of the decisions we’ve made—decisions about what to focus on, decisions about where to place our priorities, decisions about what things mean and decisions about what to do. For example, if your business or career has been affected by the recession, do you feel that you are being punished or challenged to find a new path? What are you going to do about it? Are you going to give up or give more? No matter what we have experienced in the past, our history is not our destiny—we all have the power to make new decisions today. Here’s another way to look at it: Success is a result of good judgment; good judgment is a result of experience, in most cases. And what about experience? Yes, experience is most often a result of bad judgment. So here’s the good news: The experience gained from bad judgment and bad decisions is unbelievably valuable—it’s priceless! So don’t waste time beating yourself up over poor decisions you’ve made; learn from the experiences. Really, failure is actually one of the best ways we learn. When people succeed, they celebrate. When they fail, they ponder. They stop and think, What happened here? What could I have done differently? It’s only through self-evaluation that we learn how to make better decisions. So, when you make mistakes, learn from them; use your experience to improve your judgment and make better decisions. *CREDIT Tony Robbins Visit Tony Robbins' websites: https://www.tonyrobbins.com/ http://www.unshakeable.com/ Follow Tony Robbins @: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TonyRobbins Twitter: https://twitter.com/tonyrobbins LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ajrobbins Google+: https://plus.google.com/+TonyRobbins Instagram: https://instagram.com/tonyrobbins/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/TonyRobbinsLive FAIR-USE COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER * Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, commenting, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. FILM DESCRIPTION: Sylvester Stallone returns to the director's chair for Rocky Balboa, the fifth sequel to the film that made him a superstar 30 years before. The movie begins with Rocky (Stallone) still mourning the death of his loyal and beloved wife, Adrian, who died three years previously after losing a battle against cancer. Rocky owns an Italian restaurant and spends his days living in his working-class Philadelphia neighborhood, visiting with his customers, and telling stories about his past. His grown son has a job as a business professional, but the relationship between the two is strained. Rocky's growing dissatisfaction leads him to attempt to purge the feelings of frustration and loss by applying for a boxing license. When the current heavyweight champion, Mason "The Line" Dixon (Antonio Tarver), needs to rehabilitate his image as a pretty boy who has never shown any real heart in the ring, his manager offers Rocky an exhibition match.
