DIY Lithium Ion E-Bike Battery Pack from 18650 Laptop Batteries
How to build a lithium ion electric bike battery pack from recovered used laptop batteries. Save hundreds of dollars by salvaging 18650 li-ion cells from used or even dead laptop batteries bought off eBay. My pack is 24 volt 20AH which should hopefully provide a 30-45 mile range per charge on my ebike (and cost less than $150 dollars). In the video I show you how to calculate the capacity, then wire and test the completed battery. UPDATE: The battery had a total capacity of 19aH. The groups of cells were slightly out of balance (3.3v, 2.5v, 2.9v, 2.5v, 3.1v, 2.9v) so I could rearrange some cells and get a few extra miles, but I'm happy enough with the results. DIY Lithium Ion Battery Pack
Here's a quick diy lithium ion battery pack. the diy lithium ion battery pack has 3 cells and a peak discharge of 40a. The 18650 Samsung 20r lithium ion battery I used can be found here: http://www.18650batterystore.com/Samsung-SDI-p/samsung-20r.htm I started by tinning some nickel strip with solder that would be used to connect the lithium ion batteries. Then I tinned the 18650 battery terminals and rolled the battery on an ice pack to cool it off quick. Then I soldered the 18650 lithium ion batteries together (3s1p) in a triangular prism orientation. Then I added 12awg wire with an xt60 and a 3s balance lead. The lithium ion battery pack is in a 3s1p configuration and is capable of letting out 20A of current continuously and 40A peak. I hope you enjoy the video! Discharge and Charge Process of a Conventional Lithium-Ion Battery Cell
Discharging During the first stage of discharge lithium atoms oxidize by forming Li+ ions and electrons, whereas Li+ ions move to the positive electrode diffusing through the electrolyte and the separator. The electrons flow from the negative electrode to the positive on the external circuitry, where the resulting current flow can be used for an application. At the positive electrode the electrons recombine with the Li+ ions and are stored in the molecular structure of the active material. Charging: If an external voltage with the same polarity is applied between the current collectors, the charge process will start. The lithium atoms leave the metal oxid structure and ionize into Li+ ions under the release of an electron of each one. In analogy with the discharge process Li+ ions diffuse to the negative electrode. At the surface of the graphite particles the Li+ ions and electrons recombine with each other forming neutral lithium atoms and are reintercalated into the molecular structure of the graphite particles.

The success of electric vehicles depends largely on their energy storage system. Lithium-ion batteries currently feature the best properties to meet the wide range of requirements specific to automotive applications – high energy density, long lifetime, good power capabilities and low cost. However, the safety and reliability of lithium ion batteries can be problematic if they are not handled appropriately. Exposing lithium ion batteries to extremely high or low temperatures, voltages or excessive currents results in accelerated battery degradation and in the worst case, battery failure. DIY: How to revive a dead 18650 (or any) Li-ion battery cell
Today I will show you how to revive a dead 18650 Li-ion cell that's being refused by the chargers. This method will work with any Li-ion battery, not just the 18650 cells. Here's my follow-up video:https://youtu.be/vFmbG8GpS4A if you wonder how much current (Amps) goes through the wire. Note: this is not a permanent way to charge an 18650 cell. The point of this method is just to bring up the voltage of the dead cell to a point that is enough for a real 18650 charger to accept it and charge it properly. When a Li-ion battery does not have high enough voltage, the charger would not charge it. I think the reason is safety because if the voltage is too low, it might take a risk of charging a NiMH or NiCad cell which are only 1.2 volts each. And if you put a NiMH or NiCad cell (at 1.2 Volts) in a Li-ion charger that charges up to 4.2 volts, all hell will break loose. Also: don't overdischarge a Li-ion cells down to below 3V especially below the threshold recognized by the charger. Otherwise, it will not live long. The "Goldilocks" zone for a long and healthy Li-ion cell life is between 30% and 90% charge. Too much charge or discharge would be bad for the cell.

Tesla's new 2170 battery cell
As it turns out, Tesla, and its battery partner Panasonic, started production of cells for qualification at the plant in December, but today, it confirmed the start of “mass production” of the new battery cell, which will enable several of Tesla’s new products, including the Model 3. The new cell is called ‘2170’ because it’s 21mm by 70mm. It’s thicker and taller than the previous cell that Tesla developed with Panasonic, which was in an ‘18650’ cell format. All About Rechargeable Lithium Ion Batteries
We get a ton of questions regarding batteries, so we scoured the world, did a little digging, and researched the topic. Now you'll have some real answers on battery recharging cycles, whether you'll need to unplug your device once it's fully charged or not, if you need to condition your battery to avoid the memory effect, and even some information on who and when current rechargeable batteries came into existence. Please add to the discussion if you have any REAL information - leave the old wives' tales on Kim Komando's channel. Thanks. Lithium batteries were proposed by M. S. Whittingham while working for Exxon in the 1970s. However, Whittingham’s rechargeable lithium battery was extremely expensive and smelly. In 1983, Michael Thackeray, John Goodenough, and coworkers further developed a lower-cost alternative that worked better and didn’t smell. Two years later, Akira Yoshino improved the design, enabling industrial-scale production. In 1989, Goodenough and the University of Texas at Austin figured out how to make the design even better and more powerful, and that lead to the rechargeable lithium ion batteries we use today. There is no “memory effect” as there was with older rechargeables, and battery calibration software is unnecessary nonsense. The lithium ion battery does have a few weaknesses. First, they hate extreme cold, or extreme heat. Fortunately, they work really well in temperatures that work for humans. So keep them out of the freezer and away from a hot car, and you’ll be golden. Secondly, all batteries die eventually. First, they’ll lose their capacity to hold a full charge, so you’ll notice them dying faster and requiring more plugging in. Then, they’ll refuse to charge at all. Most lithium-ion batteries have a rated lifetime of somewhere between 300 and 1,000 charge cycles. Drops and falls can damage the internal components, causing dangerous leaks, so be careful. Finally, lithium ion batteries are expensive and often not easy or nearly impossible to replace. Apple devices especially do not want you to open their devices, using gobs of Chinese glue and freakishly weird screws to make it as difficult as possible.

Lithium ion plane battery
Lithium ion cells are becoming more capable of delivering high power outputs for use in smaller applications such as this plane. Lithium ion cells are already used in land based applications, such as cars and bikes. However, the energy density (per mass) of the cell is far more essential for air based applications. Behind the growing risk of lithium-ion battery fires on flights
Samsung reportedly plans to update Galaxy Note 7 software to prevent the smartphones from overheating. The company recalled the device last week because of reports that its lithium-ion batteries are exploding and causing fires. The FAA has warned flyers about using the phones on commercial flights. Kris Van Cleave reports on the steps airlines are taking to reduce the risks.

Using Japanese supercomputer K, the 1st supercomputer which exceeds 10peta FLOPS in the world, scientists observed atomic-scale processes at the electrode of lithium-ion batteries, allowing them to identify a material that could improve the charging time, voltage capacity and reliability of these batteries for long-term and renewable energy storage solutions. The facility is one of a very few experimental battery manufacturing labs that are available to help academia and industry develop and test new batteries. Most of these places are owned by private companies that keep their proprietary tests under wraps, but a few DOE labs – Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory – operate more open facilities so the results can often be made public. PNNL’s semi-automated Advanced Battery Facility enables scientists to test out all kinds of different materials – including lithium-metal, sulfur, sodium and magnesium – to make batteries last longer and store more energy. The tests are helping scientists from national labs, universities and industry find lower-cost replacements for today’s most common rechargeable battery, the lithium-ion battery.
