Suitable for in-situ device testing . Battery capacity tests showed that if Rct is larger than 0.15mOhms, battery capacity was smaller than 50% of initial value Exchange! The sequence is: • Check for a battery to be inserted • Get the battery barcode via a barcode scanner • Charge the battery • Check the milliohms of the battery • Rest the battery for the set duration (if the battery needed charging) • Discharge and record the milliamps • Recharge the battery • Competed cycle uploads the battery information to my database – wait for battery to be removed then it restarts the cycle back to check for a battery to be inserted The battery will be considered Faulty if: • MilliAmps is less than 1000mAh • The temperature exceeds the threshold of 10°C during Charge, discharge and recharge cycles. • Milliohms if greater that the threshold of 500 milliohms • Charging time is 8 hours Components and modules used are: • Arduino Mega RobotDYN • 8x 3.3ohm Resistors • 8x TP4056 • 8x (24 total) Logic Level FET’s for Charge, Discharge and Battery polarity protection. • W5500 Ethernet Module • USB Host Module for the Barcode Scanner • 2004 20x4 Blue LCD with SPI • Rotary Encoder for cycling LCD menus • 9x DS18B20 1-wire temperature sensors • 5V 20A Switching power supply • Printed PCB, wires, passive components, heat sinks and mounting hardware Checkout my database stats page of currently processed batteries: http://vortexit.co.nz/battery_statistics.php

Tesla's new 2170 battery cell

As it turns out, Tesla, and its battery partner Panasonic, started production of cells for qualification at the plant in December, but today, it confirmed the start of “mass production” of the new battery cell, which will enable several of Tesla’s new products, including the Model 3. The new cell is called ‘2170’ because it’s 21mm by 70mm. It’s thicker and taller than the previous cell that Tesla developed with Panasonic, which was in an ‘18650’ cell format. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been boasting about the new cell over the past few month. He said that it’s the “highest energy density cell in the world and also the cheapest”.

What happens when lithium-ion batteries overheat and explode has been imaged inside and out for the first time by a team led by UCL PhD student Donal Finegan (UCL Chemical Engineering) and Dr Paul Shearing (UCL Chemical Engineering). Understanding how Li-ion batteries fail and potentially cause a dangerous chain reaction of events is important for improving their design to make them safer to use and transport. Hundreds of millions of these rechargeable batteries are manufactured and transported each year as they are integral to modern living, powering mobile phones, laptops, cars and planes. Although battery failure is rare, earlier this year, three airlines announced they will no longer carry bulk shipments of lithium-ion batteries in their cargo planes after the US Federal Aviation Administration tests found overheating batteries could cause major fires. About UCL (University College London) Founded in 1826, UCL was the first English university established after Oxford and Cambridge, the first to admit students regardless of race, class, religion or gender, and the first to provide systematic teaching of law, architecture and medicine. We are among the world's top universities, as reflected by performance in a range of international rankings and tables. A great future for the battery is predicted in the modern electric car. But how does this battery work? The animation shows how the components of the battery work together to release energy and to recharge the battery again. The goal: BASF wants to make the electric car of tomorrow reliable and suitable for everyday use with lithium-ion batteries. BASF helps to increase the mobility of the electric car by making the lithium-ion battery even more powerful. This film explains the principle of the lithium-ion battery: The battery is enclosed in an aluminum and copper layer. In between are a positive electrode, the cathode, and a negative electrode, the anode. The cathode consists of a lithium metal oxide, the anode is a graphite layer. In order for the Li ions to migrate into the cell, the cell is filled with an electrolyte. The electrolyte of the battery must be extremely clean. Cathode and anode in the battery are split by a separator, which is permeable to the Lithium-ion. In addition, the process of charging and discharging is displayed. Discharge and Charge Process of a Conventional Lithium-Ion Battery Cell

Discharging During the first stage of discharge lithium atoms oxidize by forming Li+ ions and electrons, whereas Li+ ions move to the positive electrode diffusing through the electrolyte and the separator. The electrons flow from the negative electrode to the positive on the external circuitry, where the resulting current flow can be used for an application. At the positive electrode the electrons recombine with the Li+ ions and are stored in the molecular structure of the active material. Charging: If an external voltage with the same polarity is applied between the current collectors, the charge process will start. The lithium atoms leave the metal oxid structure and ionize into Li+ ions under the release of an electron of each one. In analogy with the discharge process Li+ ions diffuse to the negative electrode. At the surface of the graphite particles the Li+ ions and electrons recombine with each other forming neutral lithium atoms and are reintercalated into the molecular structure of the graphite particles.

Here's a quick diy lithium ion battery pack. the diy lithium ion battery pack has 3 cells and a peak discharge of 40a. The 18650 Samsung 20r lithium ion battery I used can be found here: http://www.18650batterystore.com/Samsung-SDI-p/samsung-20r.htm I started by tinning some nickel strip with solder that would be used to connect the lithium ion batteries. Then I tinned the 18650 battery terminals and rolled the battery on an ice pack to cool it off quick. Then I soldered the 18650 lithium ion batteries together (3s1p) in a triangular prism orientation. Then I added 12awg wire with an xt60 and a 3s balance lead. The lithium ion battery pack is in a 3s1p configuration and is capable of letting out 20A of current continuously and 40A peak. I hope you enjoy the video! Today I will show you how to revive a dead 18650 Li-ion cell that's being refused by the chargers. This method will work with any Li-ion battery, not just the 18650 cells. Here's my follow-up video:https://youtu.be/vFmbG8GpS4A if you wonder how much current (Amps) goes through the wire. Note: this is not a permanent way to charge an 18650 cell. The point of this method is just to bring up the voltage of the dead cell to a point that is enough for a real 18650 charger to accept it and charge it properly. When a Li-ion battery does not have high enough voltage, the charger would not charge it. I think the reason is safety because if the voltage is too low, it might take a risk of charging a NiMH or NiCad cell which are only 1.2 volts each. And if you put a NiMH or NiCad cell (at 1.2 Volts) in a Li-ion charger that charges up to 4.2 volts, all hell will break loose. Also: don't overdischarge a Li-ion cells down to below 3V especially below the threshold recognized by the charger. Otherwise, it will not live long. The "Goldilocks" zone for a long and healthy Li-ion cell life is between 30% and 90% charge. Too much charge or discharge would be bad for the cell.

The success of electric vehicles depends largely on their energy storage system. Lithium-ion batteries currently feature the best properties to meet the wide range of requirements specific to automotive applications – high energy density, long lifetime, good power capabilities and low cost. However, the safety and reliability of lithium ion batteries can be problematic if they are not handled appropriately. Exposing lithium ion batteries to extremely high or low temperatures, voltages or excessive currents results in accelerated battery degradation and in the worst case, battery failure. First ever video edit for this channel. Haha! They are awesome and will work great for my new Powerwall project. I cut one of these cells open to end the debate about whether or not they are 2-18650's inside. I'll go through the BMS in an upcoming video. It's a real BQ battery gauge IC so i have no doubt it functions as such. These are wonderfully built and perfect for 12/24/48V systems. Don't try this at home. Cutting open batteries is dumb and should be left to us professional dummies. I did not say "go buy them now as an advertisement", I am literally going to buy whatever he has left so if you want any for your projects, you better get them soon. I will wait until next Thursday before I drive up and get whatever he still has and I will not be selling any of them.

Need a new battery for the JBL Xtreme bluetooth speaker? In my case i got a used one from Ebay where the battery was dead. It didn't charge anymore, and it was out of warranty. I was going to try to convert it to Li-ion batteries the same way as they are used in the JBL Xtreme 2. Found and old broken laptop battery with 6 18650 cells in it. Took that apart, and was able to recover four good batteries from that pack. Now they are in the Xtreme, and they are doing a good job. They are however more expensive than a lead acid, but the cost may be well worth it. On average a lithium-ion battery costs 30% more than a lead-acid.  Lithium-ion batteries are generally much smaller than lead-acid. For this reason, make certain upon purchase that it will fit your motorcycle. Many sellers of lithium-ion batteries will put the battery in a "stock case" for your brand/model motorcycle. That means that they'll make it the same size as your stock lead-acid battery so it will fit perfectly in the battery compartment of your Harley-Davidson as an example. If you choose to buy the smaller size lithium-ion it may bounce around in your large battery compartment. Many come with shims so you can try to wedge the battery in to keep it from moving around. My recommendation is to get a lithium-ion battery with the correct case size for your application.  When purchasing a lithium-ion, also be aware of the terminal placement such as side or top to make sure it will work with your application. Again, this is why I bought a direct replacement lithium-ion made for my Harley Street Glide that has everything the same as my lead-acid.  Lithium-ion batteries often have more cold cranking amps (CCA) and that means more powerful starts. As an example, the Twin Power Lithium Ion Battery -DLFP30HL-BS-H I bought has 625 CCA, whereas a typical lead-acid for a Harley will have 400-500 CCA.  The first possible drawback to a lithium-ion is that if you let it fall to below 11 volts by accidentally leaving your headlight as an example, you may permanently damage the battery. Whereas, a lead-acid in good shape could be charged and likely recover. The second drawback, not really in my opinion, to a lithium-ion motorcycle battery, is that if you leave your motorcycle out in temperatures below freezing for an extended period of time, you'll have to "wake" the battery to get it cycling. This is easily done by turning your headlight on for a short period or bumping the starter a few times. Once awake, you lithium-ion goes to work fast and gives you those cold cranking amps. I tested my lithium-ion battery by placing it in my freezer for a bit over two hours at 12 degrees Fahrenheit. I tested it on my Harley and it fired right up and the battery never went to sleep. That tells me that you'd need to have your bike in the below-freezing temps for some time before it would go to sleep. Again, easily overcome by just bumping your starter or turning your headlight on to wake it.  An upside is that Lithium-ion batteries don't really need to be on a battery tender all winter like a lead-acid as they only lose about 10% of their charge a year while sitting. Whereas, a lead-acid battery loses 1% per day. Just remove the negative battery terminal on your lithium-ion battery when storing your motorcycle & you're good to go. Then, just charge it up and top it off before riding season. In contrast, you should keep your lead-acid on a battery tender while you park and/or store your motorcycle for any length of time to greatly increase its lifespan. Lithium ion cells are becoming more capable of delivering high power outputs for use in smaller applications such as this plane. Lithium ion cells are already used in land based applications, such as cars and bikes. However, the energy density (per mass) of the cell is far more essential for air based applications.
