How to build a lithium ion electric bike battery pack from recovered used laptop batteries. Save hundreds of dollars by salvaging 18650 li-ion cells from used or even dead laptop batteries bought off eBay. My pack is 24 volt 20AH which should hopefully provide a 30-45 mile range per charge on my ebike (and cost less than $150 dollars). In the video I show you how to calculate the capacity, then wire and test the completed battery. UPDATE: The battery had a total capacity of 19aH. The groups of cells were slightly out of balance (3.3v, 2.5v, 2.9v, 2.5v, 3.1v, 2.9v) so I could rearrange some cells and get a few extra miles, but I'm happy enough with the results. Visit our website for more information on our research – epg.eng.ox.ac.uk -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This video gives an overview of degradation in lithium-ion batteries and discusses how models of degradation could be used in a battery management system for an electric vehicle. The success of electric vehicles depends largely on their energy storage system. Lithium-ion batteries currently feature the best properties to meet the wide range of requirements specific to automotive applications – high energy density, long lifetime, good power capabilities and low cost. However, the safety and reliability of lithium ion batteries can be problematic if they are not handled appropriately. Exposing lithium ion batteries to extremely high or low temperatures, voltages or excessive currents results in accelerated battery degradation and in the worst case, battery failure. DIY: How to revive a dead 18650 (or any) Li-ion battery cell

Today I will show you how to revive a dead 18650 Li-ion cell that's being refused by the chargers. This method will work with any Li-ion battery, not just the 18650 cells. Here's my follow-up video:https://youtu.be/vFmbG8GpS4A if you wonder how much current (Amps) goes through the wire. Note: this is not a permanent way to charge an 18650 cell. The point of this method is just to bring up the voltage of the dead cell to a point that is enough for a real 18650 charger to accept it and charge it properly. When a Li-ion battery does not have high enough voltage, the charger would not charge it. I think the reason is safety because if the voltage is too low, it might take a risk of charging a NiMH or NiCad cell which are only 1.2 volts each. And if you put a NiMH or NiCad cell (at 1.2 Volts) in a Li-ion charger that charges up to 4.2 volts, all hell will break loose. Also: don't overdischarge a Li-ion cells down to below 3V especially below the threshold recognized by the charger. Otherwise, it will not live long. The "Goldilocks" zone for a long and healthy Li-ion cell life is between 30% and 90% charge. Too much charge or discharge would be bad for the cell.

I know how batteries work and that they don't really have an "amp output" rating, but watch the video and I explain why I am saying the pack I built puts out around 30 amps. Wear SAFETY GEAR. Li-Ion batteries can explode if you weld them shorted out against themselves. They are dangerous. Industrial equipment bought from China is not that reliable, so under no circumstances operate this stuff without at least eye protection. The neat thing about the weird welder tool is it has recharging capabilities built into it up to 36v. Here's a quick diy lithium ion battery pack. the diy lithium ion battery pack has 3 cells and a peak discharge of 40a. The 18650 Samsung 20r lithium ion battery I used can be found here: http://www.18650batterystore.com/Samsung-SDI-p/samsung-20r.htm I started by tinning some nickel strip with solder that would be used to connect the lithium ion batteries. Then I tinned the 18650 battery terminals and rolled the battery on an ice pack to cool it off quick. Then I soldered the 18650 lithium ion batteries together (3s1p) in a triangular prism orientation. Then I added 12awg wire with an xt60 and a 3s balance lead. The lithium ion battery pack is in a 3s1p configuration and is capable of letting out 20A of current continuously and 40A peak. I hope you enjoy the video! A great future for the battery is predicted in the modern electric car. But how does this battery work? The animation shows how the components of the battery work together to release energy and to recharge the battery again. The goal: BASF wants to make the electric car of tomorrow reliable and suitable for everyday use with lithium-ion batteries. BASF helps to increase the mobility of the electric car by making the lithium-ion battery even more powerful. This film explains the principle of the lithium-ion battery: The battery is enclosed in an aluminum and copper layer. In between are a positive electrode, the cathode, and a negative electrode, the anode. The cathode consists of a lithium metal oxide, the anode is a graphite layer. In order for the Li ions to migrate into the cell, the cell is filled with an electrolyte. The electrolyte of the battery must be extremely clean. Cathode and anode in the battery are split by a separator, which is permeable to the Lithium-ion. In addition, the process of charging and discharging is displayed. DIY: How to Revive a dead Li-ion power tool battery

Fix your dead battery by using a DC power source to raise its voltage. Note: do NOT use a DC power source with more voltage than the maximum rated voltage of the dead battery. If you have a regular 18V or 20V battery pack, that's 21V max (4.2V x5). Do not use a DC power source more than 21V to revive the dead 21V battery. About the wires with alligator clips: make sure you use heavy gauge wires size AWG 14 or bigger. The alligator clips with attached wires from Harbor Freight are not going to make it as the wires are too thin and they will heat up and just melt or burn the insulation right away. And make sure to monitor closely what you're doing cause it might heat up things quickly. As soon as you get the desired voltage (about 16V or more for this kind of batteries), just remove the alligator clips and put the battery in the charger. In other words, just do the parallel charging as minimal as possible and just enough for your charger to recognize the dead battery.

Lithium = $7.50/lb, Nickel = $4.05 /lb, Manganese = $0.93 /lb, Cobalt = $36.50 / lb Today we are going to talk about “The Truth about Tesla’s Batteries.” If you’re thinking about a Tesla, you’ve undoubtedly heard about how cheap they are to fill up, how little maintenance they require, and with recent Model 3 Production ramp ups, we’re on the verge of absolute Tesla ubiquity. But one of the questions that we believe keep potential buyers up at night, surrounds their battery packs. So we’ve compiled a list of all the questions we’ve received, and we’re going to break it down, step by step in this two part video series. First we’ll look at the raw materials required to create lithium ion batteries. Second we’ll look at the battery cell manufacturing. In part 2, we’ll look at the complete battery pack manufacturing, the final Car manufacturing, and end of life recycling of lithium ion batteries. Different car makers use different cathode chemistries for lithium ion batteries, Tesla uses NCA chemistry, or Nickel, Cobalt, and Aluminium (LiNiCoAlO2). They use this particular chemistry because it offers great energy density, long cycle life, and great charge performance. This makes Tesla’s batteries the absolute top of the line in the EV world. They weigh less, last longer, and power the performance of things like Ludicrous mode. Tesla’s Batteries have gone through 3 stages: Stage 1 was from 2009-2012 found in the Roadster and Model S. Stage 2 was from 2016-2018 and powered the Model S Gen II, and the Model X. Stage 3 starts with the Model 3 in 2018. Stage 1 batteries were constructed with 18650 cells, which are 18 mm wide, and 65 mm tall. They had a NCA formulation that required 11kgs of Cobalt in the cathode, per car. They had a pure graphite anode, with no Silicon. Stage 2 batteries used the same 18650 cells, but reduced the amount of Cobalt required in the cathode from 11 to just 7kg/car. They also introduced a small amount of silicon into their anode. Stage 3 batteries are new for Tesla, and first shipped with the Model 3. Stage 3 batteries have further reduced the amount of cobalt to just around 4.5kg per vehicle. They also have a hybrid silicon/graphite anode, and while proprietary and unreported, probably higher silicon content than their stage 2 batteries. Unlike other companies that are planning to sell tens of thousands of EVs each year, Tesla is planning to sell half a million and then a million EVs each year. It's absolutely crucial to understand supply chain fragility when considering that lithium ion battery production is set to soar. Tesla opened Gigafactory 1 in Sparks Nevada, and though it will only be fully completed by 2020, its pumping out batteries, and will only increase its production rate as it nears completion. Tesla has switched from 18650 cells to 21700 cells because it’s an optimized size to maximize energy, with minimal increases in weight, and excellent cost. Voltage is largely unchanged, since its a function of battery chemistry. So the big question here is, why does Tesla use these little battery cells, when they know they’ll need thousands of them? Why not not make custom big batteries, like the ones found on a BMW i3? The i3 uses prismatic batteries, with big custom packs. The Chevy bolt and Leaf use rectangular pouch batteries, which you might think makes more sense since there’s less wasted space. The i3’s prismatic battery and the Bolts pouch battery have to be specifically made for those cars. They are built to specification, much like your smartphone. Figure out how much space you have left for a battery, then get one custom made. In contrast, the Tesla model 3 uses a new 2170 cell which will be the battery that powers all future tesla models and even their home energy storage solutions. This flexibility is why Tesla can offer a wide variety of range options. By adding more cell blocks in parallel they can increase range without changing the core voltage of the system. Tesla has a goal of producing batteries at less than $100/kWh. The Gigafactory is Tesla’s greatest asset, because by investing so heavily into a vertical integration structure, they can control costs and production levels. In contrast General Motors, completely outsources the battery development to LG Chem, who provide complete units ready to drop into their EVs. But if suddenly Honda and Toyota come with contracts to LG Chem, how would that impact GM? Vertical integration for battery manufacture is super costly, but does give Tesla a marked advantage over their competition. In fact, it might be their single biggest advantage. One question we often get is who’s actually making the battery, Panasonic or Tesla? The answer really is Panasonic.

As it turns out, Tesla, and its battery partner Panasonic, started production of cells for qualification at the plant in December, but today, it confirmed the start of “mass production” of the new battery cell, which will enable several of Tesla’s new products, including the Model 3. The new cell is called ‘2170’ because it’s 21mm by 70mm. It’s thicker and taller than the previous cell that Tesla developed with Panasonic, which was in an ‘18650’ cell format. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been boasting about the new cell over the past few month. He said that it’s the “highest energy density cell in the world and also the cheapest”. They are however more expensive than a lead acid, but the cost may be well worth it. On average a lithium-ion battery costs 30% more than a lead-acid.  Lithium-ion batteries are generally much smaller than lead-acid. For this reason, make certain upon purchase that it will fit your motorcycle. Many sellers of lithium-ion batteries will put the battery in a "stock case" for your brand/model motorcycle. That means that they'll make it the same size as your stock lead-acid battery so it will fit perfectly in the battery compartment of your Harley-Davidson as an example. If you choose to buy the smaller size lithium-ion it may bounce around in your large battery compartment. Many come with shims so you can try to wedge the battery in to keep it from moving around. My recommendation is to get a lithium-ion battery with the correct case size for your application.  When purchasing a lithium-ion, also be aware of the terminal placement such as side or top to make sure it will work with your application. Again, this is why I bought a direct replacement lithium-ion made for my Harley Street Glide that has everything the same as my lead-acid.  Lithium-ion batteries often have more cold cranking amps (CCA) and that means more powerful starts. As an example, the Twin Power Lithium Ion Battery -DLFP30HL-BS-H I bought has 625 CCA, whereas a typical lead-acid for a Harley will have 400-500 CCA.  The first possible drawback to a lithium-ion is that if you let it fall to below 11 volts by accidentally leaving your headlight as an example, you may permanently damage the battery. Whereas, a lead-acid in good shape could be charged and likely recover. The second drawback, not really in my opinion, to a lithium-ion motorcycle battery, is that if you leave your motorcycle out in temperatures below freezing for an extended period of time, you'll have to "wake" the battery to get it cycling. This is easily done by turning your headlight on for a short period or bumping the starter a few times. Once awake, you lithium-ion goes to work fast and gives you those cold cranking amps. I tested my lithium-ion battery by placing it in my freezer for a bit over two hours at 12 degrees Fahrenheit. I tested it on my Harley and it fired right up and the battery never went to sleep. That tells me that you'd need to have your bike in the below-freezing temps for some time before it would go to sleep. Again, easily overcome by just bumping your starter or turning your headlight on to wake it.  An upside is that Lithium-ion batteries don't really need to be on a battery tender all winter like a lead-acid as they only lose about 10% of their charge a year while sitting. Whereas, a lead-acid battery loses 1% per day. Just remove the negative battery terminal on your lithium-ion battery when storing your motorcycle & you're good to go. Then, just charge it up and top it off before riding season. In contrast, you should keep your lead-acid on a battery tender while you park and/or store your motorcycle for any length of time to greatly increase its lifespan. Some people like to make their own lithium ion battery packs out of old laptop cells or whatever, but charging them can be a confusing task. This is the cheapest, safest, and most efficient way I've found to charge them. The model is then extended to a battery pack, taking advantage of the modularity of Simscape and the semiconductor element blocks in Simscape Electrical for external circuitry such as those for cell balancing. How to build a Li-ion battery pack with panasonic 18650 cells 3100mah A

In this video, I show you how I recycled my old Lithium ion battery pack and reused the cell balancing circuit board. The original pack used standard 18650 Li-ion cells and had a capacity of 10 AH at 29.4 V. Since this pack did not conveniently allow me to change broken 18650 cells with new ones, I decided to build my own design. This pack is going to have about 37 AH at 29.2 V and can get me on my electric bike more than 80 Km of range. All the 84 cells which I am going to use can be checked and replace in less than ten minutes. I first started this project with some cheap cells from China which were labeled to hold up to 4600 mah. However, as it turned out, it was no more than a terrible scam. They had no more than 1200 mah. I only managed to get 34 km of range out of them. Therefor I went back to the dealer and complained. Luckily, he wanted to get rid of me as quietly as possible and kindly helped me to get the original Panasonic 18650 3100 mah cells from Japan. Since I designed the positive connectors for nipples, the Panasonic 18650 cells are flat on the top. I had to redesign the pack a little. After that, charging the battery pack went just fine and my first trip was very impressive. First 16 km each cell discharged 0.17 V, the second 17 km they discharged 0.14 V each. Maximum charge for each cell is 4.2 Volts, whereas I do charge them to 4.17 V. The minimum cutoff on my setup is at 3.42 Volts. On 0.14 V of discharge I can go an average of 16 km. 4.17 V maximum charge - 3.42 minimum charge, leaves my with 0.75 V. After going five times 16 Km, there is still 0.05 V per cell left. Recharging the battery pack takes about 8 hours. The charger goes perfectly through all three different charging speeds. It stays in the fastest for up to 4 hours than goes into the second for another 1.5 hours and stays in the slowest till the cells are full. It then turns off. All cells are charged this way at a maximum of 650 mah, which is good. The Panasonic lab tests promise 500 life cycles. This however are lab conditions. I am very optimistic that my setup will meet these conditions now most of the time, and therefor provide me with the promised 500 charging cycles. This should leave me with 40 000 Km and about 3.5 years before the pack goes down to 80 to 90% of it's original capacity. I know the positive connection is a little sub optimal. I should have made the top Plexiglas 0.5 centimeters thinner and have 7 separate tops like the ones I use now, but with the copper plates and nipples. Now I have to use two copper-plates cause I haven't thought it all the way through. I will change this when I have time. For now, everything works very perfectly. This is a good weekend project.

Charger (fan built-in) gets pretty hot during CC phase (~5 hours) then only warm at CV phase. *For EV performance info: Tested 100Km of mixed torture test ride (uphill downhill rush, hard accelerations and slow downs, full throttle half the rode, speed between 20-25 mph, all at night with real 15W lights) then battery Voltage remained at 48.1V that makes a whole 200KM of night hardest consumption range.
