7 Ways to Survive Natural Disasters
How to Survive Natural Disasters. Here’s a list of survival tips that can save your life in an emergency. We live in a time when natural disasters occur more and more often and get more and more devastating. Many of us believe we should blame the human race for that. Whether it’s true or not, we all want to know how to survive when those disasters happen. Some rules are universal for most natural disasters. A national campaign called Ready was started in the United States to inform the population about how to get ready for and survive in different emergency situations. It recommends having a basic survival kit to provide you with the most important things just in case. Remember you will need to have enough food, water, and other supplies for at least 72 hours after the disaster. “Other supplies” include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, first aid kit, a whistle, a dust mask, personal sanitation items (such as moist towelettes), pliers, can opener for food, maps of your area and an emergency cell phone with backup batteries. TIMESTAMPS Hurricane 0:40 Tornado 1:45 Tsunami 3:15 Flood 4:10 Avalanche 5:03 Wildfire 6:00 Earthquake 7:00 SUMMARY - If a hurricane starts while you are driving, leave your vehicle and find a building to shelter in, or a ditch. Stopping in an overpass will not save you. If your home is a trailer and there is enough time to flee to a safe area – do it. - If a tornado starts when you are in a public building, follow the same rules. You want to stay as low as possible. Avoid windows and open spaces such as auditoriums, gyms, and large hallways. Desks and benches can give you some extra protection if you get under them. It is impossible to outrun a tornado. - Tsunamis are so fast they hit the coast minutes after the earthquake. Remember that tall buildings, including hotels right in the beach area, can provide an excellent shelter. In case a tsunami finds you at sea, stay there instead of going back to the coast. It won’t be a safe haven. - Don’t try to be the bravest person around and stay in your house once you hear the evacuation warning. Leave for safety in higher grounds with your important papers in a waterproof container. If a flash flood gives you no time to evacuate and the water is all around you, don’t try to swim across it. - When an avalanche starts, try to move to the side of the slope as fast as you can. There will be more snow in the center of the flow. To move faster, drop any heavy equipment you have on you. If you can’t escape it, try using a sturdy tree to keep you above the snow. - If you find yourself in a wildfire area, it is critically important to ensure that you can breathe. If you fail to do it, you can pass out in the midst of a danger zone. Use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth and escape to safety. - If an earthquake starts when you are inside, stay where you were. Experts say that during an earthquake you must drop to the floor, get underneath a table, cover your neck and head with one hand, and hold on with the other hand. Your entire body must be under the table. Don’t try to run out of the building - the exterior of a building is one of the most dangerous places. Severe Weather: Crash Course Kids #28.2
So, what's the difference between "weather" and "severe weather"? Is it just how hard the wind is blowing? Is it just thunder and lighting? Well, it can be some or all of those things. In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina talks to us about what makes Severe Weather and how it interacts with the Geosphere and Biosphere. The larger the building, the more organisation is required to ensure everyone is evacuated effectively and as safely as possible. But regardless of the size or type of building or buildings, or number of employees, every organisation should have a tried and tested evacuation plan. This is Why You Carry With A Round in the Chamber! | Active Self Protection
If you want to start a “grab your popcorn” debate in the gun world, a good way to start is by talking about carrying with the chamber full (condition 1 for 1911 lovers) or empty. (condition 3) At Active Self Protection we believe that each person has to make that decision for themselves, but as for me and for what I teach, I believe that the best way is to keep the chamber full if possible. This video is why. Why is chamber full a better defensive setup? 1. Chambering a round takes both hands. Everyone teaches chambering with both hands because that is the fastest way to do it, until some goofy holster makes the rounds again that is impractical and not helpful for concealed carry. If your support hand is engaged in a bad guy or holding a child or is injured in earning your draw or otherwise engaged, you’re out of luck. Sure, range masters will teach using the rear sights to hook on the edge of your boot or belt or whatever, but those are small targets and someone is stabbing you or bashing your head in. There are four additional reasons why chamber full carry is preferred on our website, so head there for more: https://get-asp.com/hi9g Attitude. Skills. Plan. Copyright Disclaimer. Take the template that comes with the fire escape ladder and tape it to the wall centered beneath the window and 6 inches below the window stool. 2. Use a level to ensure the top of the template is perfectly level. 3. Cut along the dotted lines on the template with a utility knife. 4. Remove the template and finish cutting through the drywall along the scored lines. 5. Pull out the severed piece of drywall and cut away any insulation from the rectangular hole. 6. If there's a stud in the opening, cut it out with a reciprocating saw. 7. Make the first cut through the stud 3 inches below the bottom of the opening. 8. Cut the top of the stud flush with the top of the opening. 9. If the rough sill protrudes into the opening, make a series of closely spaced cuts into the underside of the sill, then chop out the waste with a hammer and chisel. 10. Cut short pieces of 2x4 to fit inside the wall to provide solid nailing for the fire escape ladder. Secure the pieces with 3-inch screws. 11. Press a thin piece of foil-faced insulation into the opening to act as an insulating thermal break. 12. Remove the fire escape ladder from its metal box, then set the box into the opening. 13. Bore a 1/8-inch-diameter pilot hole through each of the four mounting holes. 14. Attach the box to the opening with four 1/4-inch x 2 1/2-inch lag screws. Secure the fire escape ladder with the two top screws. 15. Drop the ladder out the window, and then have someone outside climb up two or three rungs of the ladder. 16. While the person remains standing on the ladder, check the lag screws inside the metal box to ensure the ladder is being held securely in place. 17. Retrieve the ladder, fold it up, and tuck it inside the box. 18. Snap the protective cover onto the box to conceal the ladder. 19. Patch the wall with spackling compound, then prime and paint. RB Hinkle Kicks Off Safety Excellence Program
R.B. Hinkle Kicks Off Safety Excellence Program STERLING, Va., January 11, 2016 — The roulette wheel, the carnival game wheel, the Wheel of Fortune TV game show… America loves to spin the wheel, and how much more fun it is to do so when every spin contains a win. Employees of R.B. Hinkle Construction, a PLH Group Company, have a chance to spin a prize wheel at 6 a.m. every last Wednesday of the month as part of the company’s new Safety Excellence Program, launched in the fourth quarter of 2015. Team members are nominated for recognition of their acts of safety by company foremen, safety department members, executive management or even clients, said Ed DeNeale, R.B. Hinkle Safety Director. “You’d be surprised how often we get feedback from clients on how safety conscious our people are on the jobsite,” he said. “For example, an employee of the general contractor was walking too close to an excavation, one of our guys stopped her and told her it wasn’t safe to proceed. She let us know how much she appreciated his looking out for her welfare. In another case, we received an email from one of our biggest clients about how one of our team members went out to the jobsite to cover up the holes when it was raining just to ‘safe it up.’” Each nominated employee — and there were 25 nominations during the program’s first month — receives a Safety Excellence certificate and a food gift certificate at the monthly recognition event. Then all nominees’ names are entered in a random drawing for two big monthly prizes. If the first name drawn is that of an employee who works in R.B. Hinkle headquarters office in Sterling VA, that person automatically receives what DeNeale says is the most coveted prize of all, month-long use of a prime parking spot closest to the door. “That’s a big deal at this office, where we have limited parking, and people sometimes have to park far away and walk long distances to the building.” The person whose name is drawn second (or first, if it’s an employee from one of the R.B. Hinkle offices in Beltsville or Boyd Maryland, which don’t have the same parking issues) gets to spin the safety prize wheel. The wheel is populated with desirable gifts and perks, such as a new pair of work boots, a $200 Visa® gift card, a $200 gasoline gift card, a movie and snacks pack from the local cinema, an extra vacation day or lunch with the R.B. Hinkle President. “We have a great team here, they’re always focused on safety every day,” DeNeale said. “The Safety Excellence Program gives them the opportunity to be recognized and rewarded for what they’ve been doing all along.” Safety management is very important to R.B Hinkle. Having a safety coordinator on the job site is vital to maintaining health and safety in the workplace. Having a health and safety plan is the first step, which reflects how much importance management places on safety. R.B. Hinkle’s Safety Excellence Program is part of their overall safety plan, and reflects their desire to reward employees for keeping safety first. About R.B. Hinkle Construction, Inc. R.B. Hinkle Construction, a PLH Group Company, is an underground and overhead utility construction contractor, specializing in the installation of conduit, manholes and street lights through trenching, directional drilling and moling. Exterior Lighting Concepts (An Architect's Guide)
There are two fundamental points to understand about outdoor lighting. The first is that we actually require much less light in outdoor living situations than indoors, which means the overall lighting can generally be more theatrical and less focused on tasks. The second is that in lower ambient light situations, we actually prefer lower color temperature light (warmer); it’s actually visually more comfortable. Whether it’s our primal draw to the flickering flame of fire or the fact that warm light renders the skin so naturally, our outdoor design objective is to aim for low, warmly toned lighting levels. In this video we'll review the general concepts pros think about when considering how to light outdoor spaces. Specific topics covered are: 1) The Lantern Effect - using a structure's glazed walls to provide ambient light to nearby exterior spaces. 2) Layering of light - ambient, task and accent light tips. 3) Path lighting 4) Color (and) temperature 5) Object or sentinel lighting 6) Fire 7) Wall washing 8) Dynamic range and dimming 9) Uplighting 10) Light pollution Architects featured in this video: John Pawson, Messana O'Rourke, Eric Reinholdt | 30X40 Design Workshop, Amantea Architects, Dumican Mosey, The Construction Zone, Shades of Green, Tobin Dougherty, Wagner Hodgson, Abodwell, Perello, William Duff, Link Architecture, Turnquist, Ruhl Walker, Tinmouth Chang, Ziger Snead, Bates Masi // GEAR I USE // DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 70D: http://amzn.to/29klz7k LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Is THIS an Architecture Practice? David Blaine Plans Shocking Electricity Stunt.
Magician David Blaine is preparing to spend 72 hours stood on a 20-foot platform surrounded by one million volts of electricity. Wearing a 20-pound chain-mail suit, Blaine shot arcs of lightning from his hands and head as he held a news conference to promote Electrified: One Million Volts Always On, which begins on Friday. "I had wanted to do this for years," he said. Blaine said the idea grew from an image he had of himself at the centre of a giant plasma globe but realising the idea would require him to exist in an airless vacuum, he adapted it to use Tesla coils. "Being in the middle of a lightning storm, it feels so amazing, being in an environment you shouldn't be in," he said. Stuart Weiss, Blaine's doctor, said the main risks include exposure to the ozone and nitrous oxides that are a byproduct of ionised air, which humans should not inhale in large quantities. A ventilation system will ensure Blaine has breathable air and a special visor in his helmet will protect his eyes from the ultraviolet radiation of the arcing electricity. He will also wear noise-cancelling earphones, allowing him to hear and communicate with people on the ground, despite the noise of the Tesla coils. He will drink water through a tube, urinate through a catheter, and has been fasting to avoid the need to go to the toilet. The public will be able to visit him as he carries out the stunt and control the electricity around him. People at viewing stations in London, Beijing, Tokyo and Sydney will also be able to control the coils. Blaine said he hoped to inspire children to learn more about physics - for example, it is not the volts, even a million of them, that can kill, but the amps. The electric current, measured in amps, produced by a typical Tesla coil is low. The magician's past endurance stunts include sitting in a box suspended above the River Thames in London for 44 days with only water and standing unharnessed on a 100-foot-high pillar in New York City for 35 hours.

Northern Kentucky EMA has app
CAMPBELL COUNTY, Ky. (Scott Dimmich) -- Keeping the community safe is a team effort. While The Weather Authority tracks storms, local emergency managers want you to be prepared for any disaster. The Northern Kentucky Emergency Planning Committee's new app focuses on preparedness, especially in chemical emergencies. "The goal is to make the community aware of chemicals in their neighborhoods and communities, and make them aware there is a place they can go to get information about those chemicals and what preparedness plans are in place," said Campbell County Emergency Management Director William Turner. Turner said the app also gives the community traffic information, photos of training, an events calendar, and steps to prepare for any disaster. "We also talk about some weather related issues. We have a section on lightning safety and tornadoes," said Turner. The Northern Kentucky Emergency Planning Committee felt the app was essential given advances in technology and the need to reach as many people as possible. Turner said, "We realize that more and more people are relying on apps like this for their iPad and their phones. If you want information that's where you turn now, especially the younger generation. We felt by creating the phone app that and also updating the website, it would help us in outreach to the community." Follow Scott Dimmich on Twitter @scottdimmich and LIKE him on Facebook
