Exploring the Americas - US History

13:18
This PowerPoint, with activities, and lesson plans are available @: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mr-Raymond-Civics-And-Social-Studies-Academy This lesson teaches students about the Age of Exploration’s “discovery” of the “New World.” This lesson focuses on the causes of the Age of Exploration, the competition for the development of trade and colonization that took place between European, and some of the explorers and key events involved. Students are also introduced to some of the ramifications for the Native Americans who came into contact with these early explorers. Content includes: • Causes of the Age of Exploration: feudalism, the Crusades, the Renaissance, and the Three G’s of Exploration • Technological advances: astrolabe, compass, quadrant, and carracks • Mercantilism • Three G’s of Exploration: Glory, Gold and God • Portugal and Henry the Navigator’s early explorations of Africa • Columbus, Queen Isabella, King Ferdinand and the Voyage of 1492, as well as subsequent journeys • Amerigo Vespucci • Cortes and the Aztecs • Treaty of Tordesillas • Conquistadors • Pizarro and the Inca • Spanish colonies • Cultural exchange between the Natives and Europeans • Columbian Exchange • The Northwest Passage: England, France, and the Dutch Like most of the videos on Mr. Raymond’s Civics and Social Studies Academy’s lessons, this video ends with a review “quiz.” Remember that the PowerPoint in this video as well as a variety of lesson plans, worksheets, smartboard files and activities, are available at Teachers Pay Teachers. As a social studies teacher, I have often looked for good YouTube video clips to show my students. I hope these videos will serve as a supplement to lessons for civics teachers, US history teachers, US government teachers and their students. I have also thought that these videos could help those who are going to take the naturalization test to become US Citizens. Oxford Explorers: Teaching the Whole Child. Nina Lauder.

40:13
Research has shown that pupils learn best when their intellectual, social and emotional needs are met. Hence, as teachers, it is important for us to help our pupils develop social and emotional skills alongside teaching them the academic curriculum. Clearly, this is not easy to do in large mixed ability classes with limited time but we hope to illustrate that it is not an impossible task. In this session, we will discuss how and why to teach the 'whole child' within the reality of Polish school system and will also look at some easy to carry out activities that can be used in class, including some ideas on how to use the Oxford Explorers' characters for social education. https://elt.oup.com/catalogue/items/local/pl/oxford_explorers_pl/?cc=pl&selLanguage=pl&mode=hub

The battered vessel and its 18 sailors were all that remained of a fleet that had departed three years before. Yet her voyage was considered a success, for the "Victoria" had achieved something unprecedented – the first circumnavigation of the globe. Ewandro Magalhaes shares the story of Magellan’s journey. Let's Do Science: Ice Explorers

01:05
In this activity, experiment with melting ice using salt and liquid watercolors/food coloring. When salt is generously applied to a large piece of ice, it begins to crack and melt. When coloring is added, the fissures, cracks and tunnels the ice become very “clear”! We see ice melting and refreezing all the time on Earth, and we can even see it happening on other worlds in our Solar System! Supplies: -Water -Freezer -Plastic/glass container or medium-sized bowls (for making the ice) -Liquid watercolors OR food coloring -Table salt (fine or coarse) -Large tray or bin lid (clear or white is best) -Small jars or cups for liquid watercolors/food coloring -Spoons OR pipette/dropper (optional) -Turkey baster (optional) Step 1: Fill several bowls/containers with water and place overnight in freezer (fill at least ¾ full). Step 2: Remove ice from freezer. To remove, run warm water over the ice and gently place on tray/bin lid (a large, flat surface like a kitchen table works best for this). Add an old towel or plastic drop cloth for extra protection. Step 3: Pour some table salt into a bowl. Then, sprinkle some salt on each of the “ice domes.” Start with a small amount, since a little salt can go a long way! Step 4: The salt should begin to melt the ice after a few minutes. Once you begin to see small rivulets of water, add small amounts of liquid water color to the top of the ice domes with your dropper or spoon (separate your colors into small jars/cups for easy access). For younger kids, it may take some practice to use the droppers. Step 5: Note where the colors are pooling/running on the ice. Add more salt and color as necessary. Try adding more salt and color in one location on the ice to see what happens.

History ideas: using Evan-Moor History Pockets

05:36
I love to have some type of notebooking or lapbooking as a part of our history lessons. Sometimes, as with the History Pockets, it can be for a complete unit (I would just add in some related books and call it a day) or simply as a part of a larger study. You can find these History Pockets everywhere. Usually thru used book sales, Amazon or Ebay. :) I will be incorporating parts of the Civil War components into my teen's study of the early US to 20th Century history next year. Mostly the titles and a few of the info sheets. I plan on sharing our current Medieval notebooking soon (this will take us many more months to complete) which should give you some ideas on how you can stretch this particular activity to fit older kids. This is esp. helpful when you have multi-age students to teach. The target aged kids can do (if you want) the whole unit, older kiddos less and only specific ones, and the youngers can listen in or do the age appropriate companion. HTH

Age of Exploration World Travel & Trade

05:34
In social studies, we've begun our unit on early explorers. Our first lesson took us all the way back to the 13th century - a time when merchants and traders traveled on the Silk Road across China to Europe. We divided up into groups and our teacher assigned each group a chunk of text. Our task was to identify the main idea and most important details from the text and summarize this with a script. Then, we added drawings to display for the camera and recorded ourselves narrating our section of the slide show. Our teacher compiled our videos into one lesson summary. Enjoy our video.

Students are led by docents and professional teaching artists, who introduce them to methods of looking at and communicating about works of visual art. The program is supported by sketchbook writing and drawing activities and culminates in a Museum Final Event during which students present their ideas about art. The Smart Museum's funded educational programs integrate all facets of the visual arts into the school curriculum by fostering critical thinking, writing, and creative problem solving skills through Museum visits, online activities, hands-on projects, and classroom discussions. Art Explorers at My Gym

01:08
Our Art Explorers program is the perfect class for children who love art and the world of imagination! Children have tons of fun as they participate in a variety of activities such as hands-on art exploration, story time, interactive circle time and so much more! Each week, children LEARN something new about an artist, an art concept, a foreign country, or another fascinating subject CREATE individual masterpieces around that lesson and EXPLORE through additional Free-Art experiences and physical activity. Brush painting, sponge painting, sculpting, cutting and pasting are just a few of the ways in which our young artists express their creativity and develop fine motor skills. And what would a trip to My Gym be without some moving and playing to keep those young bodies healthy and strong! This class is all about learning, creating, exploring and, of course, having My Gym Fun as children begin to look at art in a whole new way!
