ESL Art Lesson: Self Portrait Drawings
My ESL students in South Korea enjoy learning and practicing their English in non-conventional ways, so I took an art activity and integrated some English practice into it! Even if your students aren't ESL students, this is a fun activity that can be used to help students realize the positive aspects of their personalities and identities (and those of their peers as well). Arts Integration at TCEA - Color Theory and States of Matter 1
5th and 6th grade students present the process of their art integration student project in this video. Throughout the project, students integrated visual art (color theory) with science (the changing states of matter) during an arts integration studio project at The Capitol Encore Academy. Students were challenged to create art about the changing states of matter (either more abstract or representational) using art media science experiments that changed states of matter during the creation process. Student integrated color theory: warm, cool, complementary during the process. Students wrote artist statements (integration ELA informative writing) explaining their work, and ended with an exhibit. During the presentation, (See Video 2) students helped guests and younger grades create their own min-artworks using the same experiments. Learn more at: capitolencoreacademy.org

Art Smarts: After School Art Lessons
http://www.artsmarts.net http://www.lamesatoday.com/profiles/blogs/arts-in-the-schools Art Smarts offers after school art lessons to kids. Children are encouraged to try new avenues of creativity by using several different drawing and painting techniques, mediums and subject matters. We help them to expand their horizons for their future successes in life by demonstrating to them how many different kinds of artists make their living through various art projects we provide. Mission Statement Our mission is to provide quality art instruction to children after school that goes above and beyond the expectations of both children, their parents, and respective principals or supervisors in the facilities where the art instruction is taking place. Our goal is to provide a positive uplifting environment of creativity, raising children's self-esteem through encouragement. The "Wow Factor" is an important element to Art Smarts, helping to keep art projects fresh, interests peaked and motivating students. Lesson Plans and Art Mediums Art Smarts has several lesson plans which if never repeated, can go on for approximately 4 years. This way the student can continually learn different things in art. There are several lessons pertaining to animals, from birds and reptiles to wild animals and even cats and dogs. which is always a favorite. Art Smarts has a wide variety of lesson plans including landscapes, seascapes, portraiture, still life, design and even abstract painting. We also teach some cartooning as well as Manga, Japanese wide eyed cartooning, a favorite in the Middle Schools. We draw and paint using all sorts of mediums. Colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, aqua crayons, and watercolor pencils are some of the many explored mediums. We may use colored paper, canvas boards, watercolor paper and even show them how to recycle brown paper bags into faux animal hides. Whatever the lesson, the kids just love to take art classes with Art Smarts. Art Smarts teaches art in several schools, both elementary and middle, ages from 5 - 12. How Art Smarts started I was born and raised in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. After receiving a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art, I furthered my education at the San Francisco Art Institute and also San Diego City College. When our children reached school age, I was the Art Docent Coordinator at their school, Murray Manor Elementary, for 10 years. That's where I discovered the need for art to be put back into the schools and where Art Smarts began its first after school program. Penelope Quirk President of Art Smarts, Inc. P.O. Flextangle STEAM Art Project
Flextangle: STEAM Fusing Math and Art (Student Artwork Examples) Hexaflexagon , Color Schemes & Pattern Middle School & High School Art STEAM Lesson I first saw flextangles on babbledabbledo.com and thought it would be a great STEAM Art project combining the mathematical flexahexagon paper sculpture and art patterns and color theory. My high school art 1 class applied our recent art lesson on types of color schemes along with Zentangle patterns to create this intriguing and addicting paper polygon. Flexahexagons are crazy fun to create. My students couldn't stop flexing them after they made them! Even though this was done with high school, this lesson can be easily modified to elementary by simplifying the design requirements.
