English Grammar Lessons - Verbs and Tenses | Learning English Lessons

07:56
Basic English Grammar lesson -- Verbs and Tenses -- Speak fluent English. What are verbs? The verb is king in English. The shortest sentence contains a verb. You can make a one-word sentence with a verb, for example: "Stop!" You cannot make a one-word sentence with any other type of word. Verbs are sometimes described as "action words". This is partly true. Many verbs give the idea of action, of "doing" something. For example, words like run, fight, do and work all convey action. But some verbs do not give the idea of action; they give the idea of existence, of state, of "being". For example, verbs like be, exist, seem and belong all convey state. What is a Tense? Tense is a method that we use in English to refer to time - past, present and future. Many languages use tenses to talk about time. Other languages have no tenses, but of course they can still talk about time, using different methods. So, we talk about time in English with tenses. But, and this is a very big but: • we can also talk about time without using tenses (for example, going to is a special construction to talk about the future, it is not a tense) • one tense does not always talk about one time (see Tense & Time for more about this)

#Paperslide Video Projects | Ms. Mullaney's 6th Grade Language Arts

01:30
http://lodgemccammon.com Many educators believe that “teaching is the highest form of understanding” and this is how Ms. Mullaney, a 6th grade language arts teacher at Neal Middle School in Durham, North Carolina uses paperslide videos to challenge every learner in her classroom to become a teacher. First, the students are put in groups and assigned a topic. After collecting, researching and reviewing the necessary information, the students gather materials and begin thinking through how to design their paperslide lessons. Each group is required to collaborate, write a script and create images that help illustrate their topic. Once they have completed and practiced their presentation, they step out into the hallway or into another classroom to record their lesson using a cell phone. The students record their paperslide video in 1-take, they hit record, one student reads the script while the other group members slide the pieces of paper...they hit stop, and their video is complete. Students then come back together to review their paperslide videos and reflect on how they did -- looking critically at what went well, and what could be improved. After the videos are reviewed, students complete a self-evaluation rubric, further reflecting on their collaborative process and product. Ms. Mullaney then publishes the videos online and shares them with her students. Paperslide video projects provide an opportunity for students to build critical thinking, collaboration & communication skills while they are challenged to be the teachers of information.
