What medications cause hair loss? - Dr. K Prapanna Arya

02:54
Certain drugs can contribute to excess hair growth, changed in the hair color, or texture of hair loss. Drugs cause hair loss by interfering with the normal cycle of scalp hair growth. During the anagen phase, which lasts for about 2 to 6 years the hair grows to the telogen phase, which lasts about 3 months, the hair rests. At the end of every telogen phase, the hair falls down and there is replacement of new hair. Medications can lead to 2 types of hair loss. One is called as telogen effluvium and second is called as Anagen effluvium. Telogen effluvium is the most common form of drug induced hair loss. It usually appears within 2 to 4 months after taking the drug. This condition causes the hair follicles to go onto their resting phase, that is telogen and follow too early. People with the telogen effluvium usefully shed between 100 to 150 hairs per day. Aanagen effluvium is the type of hair loss that occurs in the anagen phase of the hair cycle when the hairs are actively growing. It permits the matrix cells which produces new hair from dividing normally. That type of hair loss occurs within the first two days to weeks after taking the medication. It is most common in people who are taking chemotherapy drugs for cancer and is often severe in most of the people who loose most of all of their hair on the head as well as their eye brows, eyelashes and other body hair. The severity of the drug induced hair loss depends on the severity of the drug and the dose as well as the sensitivity to the drug. What are the type of drugs causing this hair loss? There are different types of drugs which are thought to cause hair loss when taken for a prolonged period, this includes active medications such as Vitamin A , retinoids, antibiotics or antifungal drugs, anti-depressants and birth control pills, anticlotting drugs, cholesterol lowering drugs, drugs that stimulate the immune system, drugs that treat breast cancer and other cancers, epileptic drugs that is anticonvulsants, high blood pressure medications such as antihypertensive such as Beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics, Hormone replacement therapies, Non-Steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Parkinson’s disease drugs or medications, thyroid mediations and weight loss drugs.

These are all the psychiatric drugs I've taken for Depression and Bipolar Disorder. The side effects going onto each drug and increasing the dosage are really awful and made me sick all the time. But I LOVE the result and it's worth fighting through all the acne, exhaustion, flu-like symptoms, dehydration, etc. I have Bipolar 2 and experience mostly depressive episodes with lighter hypomanic times. Shocking allergic reaction: Girl's skin peels off after bipolar disorder prescription drug use

01:48
A Georgia grad student was left almost blind and without the vast majority of her skin following a rare allergic reaction to a common drug used to treat seizures and mood disorders, according to a New York Daily News report. Back in 2013, Khaliah Shaw, 24, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and prescribed a common seizure and mood disorder medication called Lamotrigine. Within a month of taking the medication, she developed a strange rash on her face and noticed her lips were always peeling off. Shaw initially went to the doctor and was told she had the flu. Two days later, she awoke to find her hair had fallen out, her nails had fallen off and that her skin was peeling right off. Doctors decided to put the 24-year-old into medically-induced coma to alleviate her pain and eventually diagnosed her with Steven-Johnson Syndrome. SJS is a rare disorder that starts off with flu-like symptoms and attacks the top layer of the skin, forming a rash that spreads and turns into blisters. It eventually makes the layers of the epidermis shed and fall. The disease is caused by toxins from a drug or an infection, which, if not treated, can even prove fatal. When Shaw awoke from her five week-long coma she was in shock that she had lost all of her hair and fingernails, and nearly 90 per cent of her skin had peeled away. The brave young woman has since undergone 13 month-long road to recovery, which has included seizure treatments and months spent at a burn center. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Lamictal Side Effects | Dealing with the Side Effects of Lamotrigine

02:32
Check out my blog for a FREE Ketogenic diet cookbook - https://getfitandhealthyathome.com/free-keto-cookbook-bacon-and-butter/ I was on lamictal for almost a decade in my twenties. Lamictal caused the most extreme side effects of the four different anti-convulsants that I have taken to control my epilepsy. The side effects of lamictal on my body were double vision, slower thinking skills, and terrible bouts of vertigo which were worse than seizures for me. One day when I was driving, I did start seeing double. It was awful. It was also a catalyst to get healthier and improve my health to the point where I wouldn't be relying on medication for my seizure control. When I started lamictal, the side effects that were listed were minimal. It was a newer drug and the only side effect of lamictal that my doctor was concerned about was the chance of a rash. I started to experience double visions months after I began taking the medication. It took me awhile to realize that my double vision was a lamictal side effect. Be informed before going on Lamictal. It is a drug and can control your seizures, but be forewarned that there are side effects and you will likely experience them. Is there anything that you can do about the side effects of lamictal? I recommend doing some clay detox baths to draw out some of the toxins that the prescription medications leave in your body. It reduces the stress on your body and can help you feel healthier and live a higher quality of life. 0:01 lamictal side effects video begins 0:15 I am the author of Seizure Free, Addressing the Causes of Seizures Naturally 0:25 Lamictal side effects on me Check out my blog for more info on me - http://melindacurle.com/2013/09/28/addressing-the-causes-of-seizures-naturally/

Bipolar Medication: Lithium

13:20
I hope you enjoyed the video! Here is a link to test your knowledge: http://empowern.com/2015/08/bipolar-medication-lithium/ Lithium belongs to the drug class: antimanic agents and it is sold under the US brand names: Lithobid, Eskalith, Eskalith-CR. More than 5.7 million American adults or 2.6 percent of the population age 18 or older in any given year have bipolar disorder. Lithium is helping some of this American. It has become one of the first and widely used psychiatric drugs for the treatment of bipolar disorder in the United States, since its approval in the 1970s. It also has become one of the most studied psychiatric medications. Indication: Lithium is an effective drug for bipolar disorder as its properties help to prevent, as well as stabilize, manic-depressive mood swings that occur in this psychiatric condition. By controlling mood disorder, it also reduces the risk of suicide. This is an advantage of lithium that is lacking in some other drugs. But it is more effective in preventing depression than it is in preventing mania. However, it needs time to develop and reach its ideal therapeutic level in the body before it induces any effects. Usually it takes about 1-3 weeks, however, in the case of sudden or acute bipolar episodes, if lithium hasn’t reached its optimum level in the client’s body, it can be prescribed along with other medications for effectiveness. Lithium can also be prescribed for other psychiatric disorders besides bipolar disorder. It can be useful when other drugs fail in conditions such as schizophrenia, major depression, and certain psychiatric problems in children. Mechanism of Action: Although lithium had been used for more than 50 years in the treatment of bipolar disorder, its mechanism of action was unknown; until 1998. Scientists didn’t know the cause of mood swings in bipolar disorder either. A study made in 1998, by a group of researchers from Wisconsin University shed light on how lithium works and why it is effective. It was concluded that lithium acts on certain nerve cells in the brain and the receptors of the neurotransmitter glutamate. Lithium has a dual effect on these receptors, and using this, it helps to regulate the level of glutamate between cells, preventing it from reaching too high or too low concentrations. According to the director of this research, Dr. Lowell Hokin, who is also a school professor of pharmacology at Wisconsin University; too little glutamate between neurons cause depression, while excessive amounts of glutamate cause mania. But it is also believed that there are more causes and factors involved in these disorders besides the level of glutamate, but nevertheless, the study has been very helpful as it has uncovered the fundamental causes of bipolar disorder.

What Is Depakote? | Epilepsy

01:58
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502050-What-Is-Depakote-Epilepsy Depakote or Valproic Acid has been around since the 1970's and used for the treatment of epilepsy. It is also known by other names including: Depakene, its generic name is Valproic Acid, there’s also a brand called Stavzor and it’s called other names in other countries. It’s a great anti-seizure medication because it’s indicated for both generalized seizures, where the brain starts firing at both sides at the same time. Focal seizures that start in one area and spread. It works in an interesting mechanism more on gaba receptors to help prevent the brain from having seizures. And again, as Pat has mentioned, it’s been around for a long time with very good response rates. Side effects with Depakote include things like weight gain, some people can have an increased appetite and gain weight on it. There can be some hair thinning or hair loss, there can be liver issues, so we check liver function when we’re checking the levels of the Depakote. That’s one of the medications that you really do need to check blood levels every once and a while. So, basically, liver, hair and increased appetite are the main side effects. It does have an FDA black box warning, so you can have basically, an allergic reaction to it. Where it can affect your liver enzymes, it can affect your red cell count, your white cell count. So as Patty mentioned, it needs to be checked, but that shouldn’t stop you from using it. It’s a strong, effective medication with a good response. As far as the side effects, a lot of them can be monitored, such as hair loss. You can use certain shampoos like, Selsun Blue, take vitamins such as zinc to prevent some of the cosmetic issues that can happen. And again, the side effects don’t occur in everybody. Depakote is a really well-tolerated medication for both generalized and focal epilepsy. Side effects include: increased appetite, liver issues and hair loss or hair thinning. That can be monitored with blood tests.

My Experiences With Medication for my Bipolar Disorder

09:27
I share my experiences throughout my process of finding the right medication for me. I'll talk about my initial personal stigma against medication, and how the view has changed over time. From the intense side effects of Abilify, rash scares from Lamictal, to weight gain from Depakote. I want to remind everyone that their experiences with these same medications could be completely different. I hope my story inspires people to have more open conversations with their psychiatrists on what actually works. I have heard countless times of people with mental heath issues never speaking up that their treatment isn't work. My medication for bipolar disorder is just part of my daily routine now. I don't really think much of it anymore. I don't like taking meds, but hey, I'm not that crazy about shoving contacts in my eyes every morning either. But I am willing to do these daily chores because they allow me to live a more productive and happy life. Please visit www.blissify.org for more video and written content about mental health. Our philosophy is "Healthy Body, Healthy Mind." The body works as one synchronized unit. We hope to inspire people to make healthy choices to benefit both their body and mind.

Severe lamotrigine toxicosis in a dog – Video abstract [ID 131583]

01:20
Video abstract of a case report “Severe lamotrigine toxicosis in a dog” published in the open access journal Veterinary Medicine: Research and Reports by Sawyer D and Gates K. Objective: The objective of this study was to describe a case of severe lamotrigine toxicosis in a dog, which was successfully treated using minimal medical interventions. Case summary: A 7-month-old male, intact, Labrador mix was evaluated because of acute onset of vomiting, rigidity, and dull mentation after ingesting lamotrigine tablets. The estimated oral dose that had been ingested was 278 mg/kg (611.6 mg/lb). Physical examination was unremarkable other than abnormalities noted in the cardiovascular and neurological systems. Neurological examination revealed dull mentation, vertical nystagmus, four-legged extensor limb rigidity, and alligator rolling. Cardiovascular examination revealed pale pink mucous membranes and multifocal ventricular tachycardia. Intravenous (IV) fluids were started at three times maintenance (180 mL/kg/day). Methocarbamol (100 mg/kg [220 mg/lb], rectally) and lidocaine (2 mg/kg [4.4 mg/lb, IV]) were administered. Twenty-four and seventy-two hours after presentation, the dog was clinically normal with no ventricular tachycardia being noted. Conclusion: Lamotrigine (6-[2,3-dichlorophenyl]-1,2,4-triazine-3,5-diamine) is an anticonvulsant medication used in humans, which inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels. The clinical success of this case suggests that administration of only methocarbamol for the neurologic effects and lidocaine for the arrhythmias, as well as supportive IV fluid therapy, could be a successful treatment strategy for dogs, even with severe lamotrigine toxicosis. What Is Keppra? | Epilepsy

01:16
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502057-What-Is-Keppra-Epilepsy Keppra or levetiracetam is one of the biggest medications used to control epilepsy. Its one of the newer ones that came out. It's available by pill or intravenously. It works on what's called an SP2 receptor. So its different than some of the other anti-epileptics and its good for both partial complex seizures as well as generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It's usually very well tolerated. It also comes in a liquid formulation which is great for kids. It can be iv loaded which means if somebody's having a seizure in the emergency room or in the hospital it can be given intravenously to stop the seizure. The biggest side effects are, it makes some people, kinda irritable and nasty. And we deal with that by giving them a B6 vitamin at the same time that we start the keppra. Sometimes you can get a little bit of somnamolism and a little bit of somnambulism being sleepy. But the nice part is it doesn't interact with other drugs. So it has very little drugs to drug interaction. No liver issues, no other blood toxicities. So it's a clean medication, treats multiple seizure types. You don't need to monitor blood levels and it's actually safe in pregnancy, which is another big plus. And it doesn't interfere with oral contraceptives.

My Topamax experience! A cautionary tale

21:02
My Topamax horror story. More specifically taking this medication with Amitriptyline (although I have no reactions to Amitriptyline by itself). I basically had a mini stroke from this medication (or the symptoms of it). Sorry if it's really long, I just wanted to make sure the details were complete. :) I know some people have had good experiences with this medication and it has helped them, however those that are considering the medication should be aware of some things that may happen, and aren't fully talked about elsewhere. This is a very potent medication. About the E.R. experience: I didn't divulge the name of the hospital in the video as I did file a complaint with the hospital and it is currently under investigation. One thing I did forget to mention is the fact that they also didn't put a hospital bracelet or an allergy bracelet on me while I was there.
