“How to recover from antibiotics.” – What does that mean? If you’ve been treated with a course of antibiotics for a long or a short time, or if you’ve been using food that has antibiotics in it, without you knowing, or if you’ve been misusing antibiotics in any way, you might start to have health problems. You might suffer from certain complaints that will make your life a little bit more difficult. Side Effects of Antibiotics Let me discuss the complaints that you might have from use of antibiotics. The most affected organs would probably be your intestines. That’s because the antibiotics are going to kill the bacterial flora, which is the friendly bacteria in your intestines that is responsible for digestion and making vitamin K, which is important for you. So, you will notice that you’re having trouble in your gut, so, you will start to have bloating, gas, irregular bowel movement, so, you will have constipation, then diarrhea and then bloating again and so on. You might also suffer from heartburn and feeling generally unwell. You might also start to notice bleeding from the gums or from the nose. That’s also related to the lack of vitamin K. You might also suffer from yeast infections, which is a fungal infection that can be anywhere on your body, either on your skin or in your mouth or in the genital area. All that is because your bacteria flora – the friendly bacteria in the gut – has been affected by the antibiotics. So, what we need to do now is correct the level of bacterial flora in your gut. How do we do that? First of, you will need to lead a healthy lifestyle. So, you drink a lot of water. Avoid bad foods. Bad foods are rich in sugar, carbohydrates that are unhealthy, like pasta, packed foods, processed foods – these are all unhealthy foods. Instead of that you should eat vegetables, fruits, grains, healthy fats (that’s vegetable oils mainly). Probiotics and Prebiotics You can also use probiotics. These are very healthy foods that are fermented, so that helps the growth of the good bacteria in the gut. Probiotics are mainly: yogurt, kefir and yeast. If you are suffering from any problems with kefir or yeast, I would suggest that you take it slowly. So you start with very small amounts, like one spoon a day, and then increase it gradually. If you go to the shop and want to buy probiotics, look for the name lactobacillus on it – that’s the good bacteria for you. You can also use foods that are called prebiotics. Prebiotics are foods that help the growth of bacteria, because they don’t get absorbed in the body, they stay for a long time in the intestines. Like, leeks (garlic, onions), honey, bananas, these are all very good foods for your bacteria flora. You can also try fermented fresh vegetables. That means, pickles that are pickled in a healthy way. So, you can try to pickle at home. So, try for example the ginger, to pickle it at home, or maybe cucumbers, also are healthy. But don’t add too much salt. So, pickled vegetables are very good for your gut flora. If you’re a fan of soups you can try bone broth or gelatin soups. You can buy bones from the butcher, and what’s inside – the broth – you can make soups with it, and that’s very good for your gut flora. You can also add onions to it, or any vegetables of your choice. It’s very important to know that your gut flora affects the function of your intestines, and healthy intestines affect the whole body. I've been having to take a lot of medication lately, first because I had an infection, then because I'd just had surgery. Like any sensible cat, I hate having my mouth pried open and things thrown down my throat. Even my veterinarian doesn't get away with that. Fortunately, my humans figured out how to grind up my pills and mix them in with yogurt. I LOVE yogurt! (Lots of cats wind up developing lactose intolerance as they get older, but I never did, probably in part because I kept eating milk, cheese, ice cream and other dairy products regularly enough that my body never stopped being used to digesting them. Even some cats -- and humans -- who are lactose intolerant can still handle yogurt, especially in small quantities.) It's a good idea to eat yogurt while taking antibiotics, for humans as well as cats, so that all the "good" bacteria in our digestive systems, like acidophilus, doesn't get killed off. The yogurt I was served in this video was Stonyfield Farm's peach-flavored YoBaby. Mmm, organic cream-on-top really helps the medicine go down! Om nom nom nom.

Yogurt is a good source of probiotics-strains of bacteria that are similar to the healthy bacteria normally found in your digestive system. These bacteria help restore the good bacteria in your gut. This in turn helps fight the diarrhea-causing germs in your digestive tract. A 2010 study published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews states that, when used alongside rehydration therapy, probiotics have beneficial effects in shortening the duration and reducing stool frequency in acute infectious diarrhea. Eat 2 to 3 cups of yogurt a day when suffering from loose motion. 2. Apple Cider Vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is a great remedy to stop loose motion. This natural antibiotic helps cure diarrhea by killing the diarrhea-causing organisms in the intestine. Its high pectin content soothes the irritated lining of the colon. Plus, it helps maintain proper pH level in the stomach, which in turn helps restore regularity. Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of lukewarm water. Add a little honey and stir. Drink it 2 or 3 times a day until your condition improves. 3. Bananas. Both raw and ripe bananas can help treat diarrhea due to their pectin content. This water-soluble fiber helps absorb fluids in the intestines, which in turn helps add bulk to the stool. Being high in potassium, it even helps replace electrolytes that may be lost during diarrhea. A 2001 study published in Gastroenterology found that the pectin in green bananas is useful in the dietary management of persistent diarrhea. It can reduce the amount of stool, frequency of vomiting and duration of diarrhea, as well as reduce the need for oral rehydration solutions or intravenous fluids. Another 2012 study published in the Journal of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry also confirms that intake of bananas is beneficial for people suffering from diarrhea. When dealing with loose motions, eat a ripe banana every few hours. You can even have ripe banana and yogurt smoothies, 2 or 3 times a day. 4. Stay Hydrated When suffering from loose motions, there is a high chance of becoming severely dehydrated. Hence, it is important to take necessary steps to stay hydrated, as even minor dehydration can worsen your condition. Sip boiled or filtered water throughout the day. If going out, do not forget to carry your own water bottle. Coconut water also helps keep you hydrated when experiencing loose motion. Drinking 2 to 3 cups of green tea is also beneficial. You can also drink pulp-free juices, clear chicken broths and caffeine free soda. Electrolyte powder mixed in water is another good option. Thanks for watching. Transmission via water and food Now, the transmission via water can happen when the sources of water contaminated by the feces of infected people or animals can be lakes and streams where campers and hikers may consume it, municipal water supply, which is inadequately sanitized or contaminated with sewage, swimming pools and recreational water parks where there is accidental adulteration by people with diarrhea or babies in diapers, some well water in rural and lower socioeconomic areas which are improperly stored and untreated. Now, in the transmitted via food - when there is consumption of improperly cooked food, which may not destroy the parasite if present, ready to eat raw food which is washed with contaminated water or if the food is handled by an infected person especially with improperly washed hands. Person-person transmission In the transmitted from person to person, when an infected individual does not wash his/her hands thoroughly after toilet use then they can leave behind the cyst on the surfaces of things or in food that they handle henceforth putting the other people around them at risk of picking up the infection. Now, the individuals or groups at risk of getting this infection include - caregivers changing diapers of infected individuals, child care setting and family members of an infected person. Symptoms In terms of symptoms, some people infected with this parasite may have no symptoms and the infection can resolve on its own. Other may show some of the following symptoms anywhere between 1-4 weeks after ingestion of the cysts. The symptoms include - stools can be bulky, greasy, frothy and foul smelling, there can be episodes of watery diarrhea with abdominal pain, there can be abdominal distension and gaseousness, there can be loss of appetite, there can also be lactose intolerance and malabsorption which can lead to weight loss, anemia and failure to thrive. Diagnosis Diagnosis can be made by examining the stool sample, preferably a fresh sample, for ova and parasite, but it may be difficult to pick up in a single sample, and hence your doctor may advise you to give 3 samples in 3 different days. If your child has symptoms of giardiasis and it is not evident on stool test, then further investigations may be recommended like an endoscopy. Treatment Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic for symptomatic patients and for those who are not symptomatic but are at risk for transmission like day care workers, food handlers etc. Depending on the type of antibiotic or antiparisitic prescribed, it may be taken either as a single dose or for 5-7 days. Now, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance should be corrected using measures as we have mentioned in the topic of “gastroenteritis and dehydration”. Now, many patients with giardiasis become temporarily lactose intolerant that is they are unable to digest the sugar called lactose, which is found in dairy products and hence need to be on a lactose free diet for a few weeks. Prevention Here are some of the things we can do to prevent the occurrence and spread of this illness. We can maintain good personal hygiene and improvise our sanitation methods. Thorough hand washing needs to be practiced after toilet use, after changing diapers, before eating and food handling. Use adequately filtered water for drinking and cooking purpose. Campers and hikers must avoid drinking from streams and lakes; drinking water must be adequately boiled before consumption. Avoid accidental ingestion or swallowing water from pools and water parks. Food allergies not only prevent people from enjoying certain foods, but may also make it difficult to get the nutrients needed for overall health. How Food Allergies Develop Food allergies occur when a particular food triggers the body's immune system to develop an allergic reaction. It only takes a small amount of the food for this to occur. An allergic reaction can develop immediately or over a few hours and can range from hives to more serious complications such anaphylaxis, which can be fatal. Symptoms of a Food Allergy Symptoms of food allergies include: Hives. These are small, itchy red bumps that look like wheels, or blotches, on the skin. Eczema. This is an itchy, dry patch of skin. Asthma-like symptoms. Some people may wheeze or cough from a food allergy. Diarrhea and vomiting. Itching of the mouth and throat. Swelling in the mouth and throat. Abdominal pain. These symptoms can signal a food allergy, but some of them can also be caused by food intolerance. For example, people who are lactose intolerant may feel sick after drinking milk, but this does not mean that they are allergic to milk. The difference is that the discomfort from food intolerance is not caused by the immune system and is thus not an allergy. Common Food Allergies Some of the most common food allergies are to nuts, dairy products, wheat, and certain fish. These reactions start when a natural immune system antibody called immunoglobin E - or IgE - triggers the release of histamine and other chemicals. The chemical histamine causes allergy symptoms like hives and sneezing. Diagnosis of Food Allergies People should visit an allergist to find out if they have a food allergy. An allergist will ask questions about family history and the symptoms caused by certain foods. A skin test may be done using liquid extracts of different foods. If a certain extract causes hives or a rash, this can confirm a food allergy. A blood test may also be performed to test for IgE antibodies to specific foods. An elimination diet may be useful in diagnosing a food allergy. This works by avoiding the suspected food to see if allergy symptoms resolve. If the symptoms do resolve, the next step is to do a food challenge. This involves eating the suspected food and seeing whether there is a reaction. If there is, the allergy is confirmed. For decades, we have fought a war against bacteria, with antibiotics as our primary weapons. These drugs have been very successful because they effectively kill the bacteria while apparently sparing us. Unless, of course, we have been wrong about what is “us.” We now know that humans are home to an ecosystem of trillions of beneficial microbes – the human microbiome – that affect our susceptibility to infections and autoimmune disease. Our health is intimately linked to theirs. We have recently come to understand that antibiotics indiscriminately kill both pathogens as well as these beneficial microbes. War is unpredictable, and waging war against our microbes has unpredictable consequences. Bernat Olle argues that we must develop new medicines that nurture this ecosystem of beneficial microbes instead of carpet-bombing it. Dr. Bernat Olle is a co-founder and COO of Vedanta Biosciences, a Boston-based biotechnology company developing a novel class of therapeutics that modulate the human microbiome, which is the community of trillions of microbes that live inside and on us, for the treatment of immune and infectious diseases. He has been named “Innovator of the Year” in Spain by the MIT Technology Review “Innovators under 35″ awards. He completed his doctoral work at the Chemical Engineering Department at MIT with Drs. Danny Wang and Alan Hatton, where he co-developed novel methods for large scale culture of bacteria. During his graduate work, Dr. Olle was awarded the “la Caixa” fellowship by the King of Spain. He received his B.Eng. from Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain, his M.S. and PhD from MIT, and his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management. He has authored several research and review articles, including publications in Nature and Nature Biotechnology. Organisers of the action called on dairy producers to mention on their labels if products contain lactose, milk fat and antibiotics, given to cows. According to Maxim Raksha, co-ordinator of the organisation, customers should know what ingredients are in their meals, especially if they have an intolerance or potential intolerance to certain ingredients, else they will be moving from one toilet to another or asking for mobile toilets to become a reality.

Geneticists working in East Africa have discovered a gene mutation that enables certain adults to digest milk. The finding is a striking example of how a cultural innovation—raising livestock—can cause unrelated people in different geographic locations to evolve in a similar direction. Less than half of the world's population is "lactose tolerant" into adulthood. Sarah Tishkoff of the University of Maryland discovered that in some East Africans, this trait is caused by a mutation of a single nucleotide on the DNA of chromosome 2. The East African mutation is different from a previously known lactose tolerance mutation seen mostly among white Europeans and Middle Easterners. The East African mutation became common when livestock farming arose there, 2,700 to 6,800 years ago. The nutrients and water from dairy animals helped humans survive in such arid regions. Lactose tolerance likely evolved in groups that practiced pastoralism, and was passed down to their ancestors.
