In Memory of Laura Kesser
Laura was a very dear friend of ours whom we had known for years, both professionally and personally. We started doing business together in the earlies 2004 and introduced to a common friend, Susan Geers. Laura was easy to get along with and do business with. Soon we were spending time at her condo on the beach, The Smurf Blue Condo, she used to call her. Jeff was the love of her life; they married, divorced and got back together until Jeff's life was cut short by cancer. Just not long before Jeff's departure, her best friend and only child also passed on, Major, a big but friednly dog. I believe that dogs are a true reflection of their owners; he was just as friendly and nice as both Jeff and Laura. The last time I saw them together was for Susan's birthday party Susan's sisters. They were the happy couple I always remeber seeing together. jeff introduced me the Red Tag brandy, and I am stuck on it. We hung out by the pool drinking while Laura kept my wife entertained catching up. Seems like that was ages ago and never had the chance to say good bye after that night. Ironically, I had just sent her a card on Monday letting her know of my change in companies.... more to come...

Allergic Disease: On the Increase
'Allergic diseases are common and increasing for reasons which currently remain unknown. For example, 20% of adults have hay fever, 10% of infants aged 12 months have a confirmed food allergy, 20% of infants have eczema and up to 3% of the population has had serious allergic reactions to insect stings (mainly adults).' Allergies and Anaphylaxis Australia Allergic disease already affects one in five Australians, and the rate is rising; the highest prevalence is in the working-age population, though food allergies particularly affect children, and occur at a rate higher than in any other country. Other common allergic conditions are eczema, asthma and hay fever. Effects range from mild to life-threatening, including anaphylactic reactions to particular food groups, insect stings, or medications. These diseases impact significantly on the quality of life of those who have the condition as well as those who care for them. For people in rural areas, there are greater challenges to the management of allergic conditions. These include distance from medical attention and hospitals, limited access to health professionals, difficulty in limiting exposure to seasonal and occupational triggers, and less convenient access to education and information about their condition. While there is no 'cure', there are medications and treatment interventions that can relieve symptoms and reduce serious reactions. Correct diagnosis and identification of the allergenic trigger factors is essential so that patients and their families can develop appropriate self-management strategies. Together with education and support, such interventions can establish a context for appropriate management, medication, and prevention strategies. They are vital as these conditions continue to increase in prevalence and impact on the community. This program explores the range of allergic conditions, with a particular focus on the high rates of allergic reaction in children. It considers recent research on the causes of rising rates of allergic reaction and the role of diet in affecting sensitivity. It also discusses the importance of diagnostic testing, careful history-taking, and the development of individually-tailored management plans, including medications. This program also explores the particular issues facing rural people who suffer from allergic conditions. More information visit the Rural Health Education Foundation http://www.rhef.com.au

Listening to the body: Bee Lo at TEDxUWLaCrosse
Natural Healing Through NAET, A New Concept To Health and Disease Prevention, Dr. Bee Lo, naturopathic doctor. Dr. Bee Lo explains the importance of learning to listen to your body. "I was surprised to learn that so many people come to my office and are out of tune with their own body. They suffer from common illnesses that are so easy to avoid and treat." Symptoms like back pain, allergies and migraines are the body's way of telling the mind that something is wrong. Yet, people are trained to associate symptoms with drugs. Taking a drug only tells the body to stop the communication of the problem while the issue continues on below the surface. Only when the cause is eliminated, will the symptom go away, explains Lo. Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET), a form of alternative medicine, looks to the cause of the symptom to treat it. He encourages all to pay attention to their body, find the cause of the pain and aim to heal the root of the problem. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
