Vitamin D A hormone, not an actual vitamin, that your skin makes when exposed to sunlight, so it does not need to acquire it from food if adequate sunlight is available The only natural foods that contain vitamin D are fish and egg yolks Most of us are deficient in vitamin D as we do not spend much time outdoors. Additionally, where we live can limit our access to vitamin D - if you live below 37 degrees south or above 37 degrees north you do not have access to sufficient sunlight except during the summer months. ( This line of latitude crosses below Colorado, Utah and Kansas, so the majority of us in the US require additional dietary vitamin D throughout the year even if we spend time outdoors Sunscreen and skin pigmentation can also act as barriers to vitamin D absorption What Does Vitamin D Do? Reduces belly fat Of all the places to lose fat, the middle of our bodies is usually the hardest and the most important, both for looking lean and for being healthy. This form of active vitamin D tells your gut to absorb more calcium, as long as you have sufficient vitamin D available. When you are deficient in vitamin D, your body will not absorb enough calcium from your diet and too much calcium will be taken from the bones to be available in the blood. Calcium plays more roles than just bone health - it is crucial for proper functioning of your nervous and muscular systems, so the body is able to take calcium from the bones to perform other functions. Vitamin K Vitamin K is helpful in blood clotting and bone strength. May also help to prevent heart disease, prostate cancer and Alzheimer’s Vitamin K2 and vitamin D3 work together to strengthen bones through their impact on calcium While vitamin D3 essentially regulates how much calcium is absorbed in the diet, vitamin K2 tells the calcium where to go, directing it to bones rather than soft tissues. When calcium attaches to arteries, known as hardening of the arteries, it can lead to cardiovascular complications. Without vitamin K2, the calcium absorbed will not go towards strengthening your bones, and thus vitamin K2 is crucial in the functioning of vitamin D3. Vitamin K2 comes from meats, eggs, hard cheeses and insects. Many people are also deficient in vitamin K2. Diet and Supplementation The best way to stay healthy is to eat a balanced diet full of leafy greens, fruits, veggies and lean proteins. This is how we can be sure we are obtaining a full range of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin D3 is one vitamin/hormone that we often have to supplement. If your supplement vitamin D3, be sure to obtain enough vitamin K2, either through a diet with meats and eggs, or through supplementation as well. First, in order to absorb vitamin K we have to have a functioning biliary and pancreas system. Your infant’s digestive system isn’t fully developed at birth which is why we give babies breast milk (and delay solids) until they are at least 6-months-old, and why breast milk only contains a small amount of highly absorbable vitamin K. Too much vitamin K could tax the liver and cause brain damage (among other things). As baby ages and the digestive tract, mucosal lining, gut flora, and enzyme functions develop, baby can process more vitamin K. Low levels of vitamin K at birth just…makes…sense. The cord blood is full of stem cells which need thin blood to get to the newborn. The stem cells protect the baby from bleeding disorders. Delayed cord clamping/cutting is very important so that the stem cells can travel to the baby to repair squeezing from birth (and it needs thin blood to do so) as well as breastfeeding to prevent hemolytic diseases as well as the mother staying away from antibiotics and other drugs during pregnancy. When i had my heart operation done about 10 years ago, i had a st judes mechanical valve replacement, i was told to try and avoid food high in vitamin K because it will have an effect on my INR levels. I now eat leafy green vegetables all the time i just make sure i eat them on a regular basis to help keep my levels in the same range all the time. I test my own INR about every 2 weeks and my levels stay pretty much within the correct range. To keep fit and healthy you need to have a good healthy balanced diet and that should also include leafy green vegetables. If you have any worries or questions about your levels or anything to do with you new valve replacement you should consult your own doctor for the best advice. I'm now fitter than i have been in years and do a lot of cycling and some weight training, so you don't have to give up everything in life just because you've had open heart surgery. You should consult your Doctor before doing any strenuous exercise or workout, if you have any dizziness or pain you should stop immediately, you do this workout at your own risk. Please be reminded i am not a personal trainer this is just my workout routine you should consult a personal trainer to obtain a proper workout for what you want to achieve. During pregnancy parents have a lot of decisions to make, but doctors say when it comes to newborn shots parents should make sure their children have them. Dr. Pierre Loredo, a pediatrician with Lee Health, says the vitamin K shot is given to babies at birth. “Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin. It’s definitely necessary for normal blood clotting.” Without the vitamin K shot, newborns are susceptible to vitamin K deficiency bleeding. “The symptoms we see with vitamin K deficiency is blood in your urine, blood in your stool, blood in your vomit, and prolonged bleeding after a circumcision,” said Dr. Loredo. Babies are at risk for bleeding which can lead to brain damage, even death. To prevent vitamin K deficiency, in 1961 the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended a one-time vitamin K dose to all children at birth. “Before we used to do the vitamin K shots, about one in 60 kids would have this type of bleeding during the newborn period,” said Dr. Loredo. Babies have very low vitamin K at birth because only small amounts of the vitamin pass through the placenta. “This is a very, very safe vitamin to give your child to prevent against vitamin K deficiency,” said Dr. Loredo. It’s important to talk to your doctor about the vitamin K shot before delivery if you have any concerns. Baby born with rare blood clotting disorder Vitamin K related!

This was the beginning of the trouble we had with Izaac's Blood clotting problems. After this we were admitted to the children's ward where over the course of the next several weeks he became a human guinnea pig as the doctor's tried to find out what was wrong with him. He kept having bleeds (haemorrhaging) under the sking and they were worried he would bleed into his brain and die any second!) it was soooo scary. He had so many blood tests (2 or 3 a day) he became a little human pin cushion. It was so devestating. They were checking for haemophilia. Eventually they decided he was vitamin K defiecient because they couldn't figure it out and they wanted to put some sort of lable on it to makethem selves feel more secure about their lack of knowlege relating to his problem. He had to have Vit K administered several times via several methods including a drip, intramuscular injection, subcutaneus injection etc. Basically his blood wasn't clotting quickly enough. They scanned his brain using an ultra sound. It was fine THANK GOD! eventually he responded to treatment and his blood clotting levels normalised to within 'an acceptable range' and he was allowed home. He is now a happy healthy 7 1/2 month old! This problem is very rare. To any other parents experiencing anything like this with their baby/child etc, please don't despare! I was told something different from every doctor I spoke to (and there were quite a few by the end of it all) ranging from 'He could die at any second' to 'There's only a one in a million chance he could bleed into the brain. all humans are at risk of this to some extent. even if he were to, the chances of him having a fit as a result of the bleed are slim and the chances of his having severe paralysis or even death as a result are slim again' so basically 'the chances of him actually dieing are the same as yours or mine.' other doctors looked at me as if i were never going to take my baby home with me again and to make the most of every moment I had with him. So to sum up....no body knows enough about this problem to know how serious it is. (or isn't)
