John Ioannidis: "Reproducible Research: True or False?" | Talks at Google

56:12
John P.A. Ioannidis, MD, DSc, is a Professor of Medicine, Health Research and Policy, and Statistics at Stanford University. He is also the founding Director of the just-launched Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS) John's talk will discuss empirical evidence about the current status of scientific information in regards to challenges of replicating and reproducing research findings produced by over 15 million publishing scientists around the world. There is substantial evidence that many adopted popular research processes are inefficient, and estimates of wasted resources are very high (e.g. 85% in biomedical research at large). The talk will also discuss some of the many ideas that have been proposed about how to improve reproducibility and research efficiency, including, but not limited to, realignment of incentives and rewards in research, sharing of information, registration of studies, enhancement of the replication culture, improved and efficient analytical and statistical methods, and adjustment to more realistic expectations about the results obtained from single studies versus larger collections of data.

Hey there! I wrote this song for my Psychology Methods Statistics class. I was having a little trouble remembering what the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 errors was. After talking with my professor (who helped me with the lyrics), I decided that writing a song would help. Hope you find it useful!

Did you check the weather forecast? Busted! Did you decide to go through the drive through lane vs walk in? Busted again! We are constantly creating hypotheses, making predictions, testing, and analyzing. Our lives are full of probabilities! Statistics is related to probability because much of the data we use when determining probable outcomes comes from our understanding of statistics. In these tutorials, we will cover a range of topics, some which include: independent events, dependent probability, combinatorics, hypothesis testing, descriptive statistics, random variables, probability distributions, regression, and inferential statistics. So buckle up and hop on for a wild ride. We bet you're going to be challenged AND love it! About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content. For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything Subscribe to KhanAcademy’s Probability and Statistics channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRXuOXLW3LcQLWvxbZiIZ0w?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe to KhanAcademy: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=khanacademy

Dr. William Davis: Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics

02:52
Drug X: "36% reduction in heart attacks!" At least that's what the headlines read and that is what drug sales representatives tell doctors. Doctors, in turn, tell this to patients. Doctors and patients hear "For every 100 heart attacks, 36 will not occur." But that is NOT what the actual clinical studies say. Reduction in heart attack is more like 1%--the headlines inflate the benefits by over 30-fold. Such statistical manipulations are common and accepted in healthcare, allow drug and medical device manufacturers to wildly overstate the benefits. If your stockbroker used such statistical manipulations to exaggerate his investment returns, you would call him a liar. Well, that's about right: So much information in healthcare is little more than lies. Understand where the lies end and the facts begin and you will have yet another important insight that can help you become Undoctored. My new book is Undoctored: Why Health Care Has Failed You and How You Can Become Smarter Than Your Doctor Get the Undoctored book on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Undoctored-Health-Failed-Become-Smarter/dp/1623368669/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1495112754&sr=8-1&keywords=undoctored

Parametric and nonparametric tests

Parametric tests are most commonly used in healthcare research. They include tests such as Student's t-test and ANOVA. There is, however a rich set of non-parametric tests that are much more appropriate to use in certain circumstances.
