During the first week, you may find it easy to lose weight by simply switching to a healthier diet. But as your metabolism adjusts, you won’t burn as many calories as you used to. So losing additional weight will become harder. Making matters worse, as the fat melts away, you’ll start to experience an increase in appetite. After a meal, fat cells release a hormone called leptin into the bloodstream. This surge in leptin levels signals to your brain you’re full and should stop eating. But with less overall fat, people who lose weight show a measurable dip in leptin. Brain scans of obese patients who had lost 10% of their body weight revealed that less leptin leads to increased activity in regions of the brain that control our desire to eat. The result isn’t just an increased appetite but an even stronger urge to eat fatty, high-calorie foods, because your brain is trying to restore the body’s leptin levels to normal. However, fighting that early impulse to gorge on pizza and donuts is worth it in the long run. Besides the decreased risk of heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, scientists studying overweight people discovered that losing just one pound of body weight reduces four pounds of pressure on knee joints. Losing excess weight also reduces strain on the blood vessels, increases blood flow to the brain, and boosts overall brain function. Several studies have shown that people who underwent weight-loss surgery saw an improvement in memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills in as soon as three months. Plus, brain scans indicate that people who lost weight and kept it off for nine months reacted differently when shown images of high-calorie foods than before they lost the weight. The brain regions that process reward, motivation, and taste didn’t react as strongly, whereas the areas that promote overall self-control had a boost in activity. So fighting those cravings early on might make them easier to control later. Turns out — like anything else — losing weight can get easier with practice.

Especially if you have an underactive thyroid. Your metabolism has slowed down and you’re almost always feeling tired. In this video we're looking at 4 steps required to successfully lose weight with hypothyroidism. TITLE - How To Lose Weight With Hypothyroidism Slide - 1. Optimise Your Thyroid Medication If your medication is not helping to correct thyroid hormone levels, as well as relieve symptoms, then weight loss goes from difficult to impossible. Determine what type of medication is better for you, and also find the optimal dose required. While Levothyroxine is on average more effective, dessicated thyroid is a useful alternative that is reportedly much better tolerated. There is no difference between taking your thyroid hormone meds in the morning vs evening. Choose whatever is easier for you to have it on a fasting stomach. SLIDE 2. Cut Back on Added Sugars and Refined Starches I need to begin with this clarification: Carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. That is, they do not make you fat or sick on their own. That said, carbs in the form of added sugars and highly refined starches are unhealthy and unnecessary. They offer almost zero nutritional benefit and make up a large portion of the excess calories we consume. Cutting back on added sugar is the most simple and direct way to cut out excess “empty” calories. This is done by limiting intake of junk foods, flavoured drinks, alcohol, white bread, most cereals, and a good portion of packaged food in your supermarket’s “health food” aisle. Now it’s unrealistic (and unfair) to expect yourself to completely avoid added sugar every day of the year. But you need to begin taking actionable steps that help you cut back and form healthier habits. Start by not having junk foods at home, or at least keep them out of sight in a cupboard you never use. 3. Base Meals Around Vegetables and Protein If you want to lose weight with an underactive thyroid, vegies and a source of protein should be the foundation of almost every meal you make, and plated first when serving. The main benefit of protein is that it’s much more satiating than both fat and carbs. That means it has a unique ability to reduce appetite and therefore your overall caloric intake too. STUDY - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8862477, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15466943 Studies show high protein diets may also reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60% and cut desire for late-night snacks by half (3, 4). Foods high in protein include meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, legumes (beans) and dairy. Protein is also the muscle-building nutrient, so a high protein diet complements regular exercise. Nutrient-dense meals are even more important for those with hypothyroidism and other autoimmune diseases, where nutrient absorption and deficiency are more common. Emphasis goes to green leafy vegetables, mushrooms and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. As a general guide, the protein portion of your meal should be the size of your palm, and salad/vegetables the size of your hand. This would leave about 1/4 or less of your plate for healthy carbs if you so choose (such as rice or potato). 4. Increase Your Intake of Selenium and Zinc Selenium and zinc are two critical nutrients directly involved in thyroid function and metabolism. Selenium is an essential mineral that helps the body to recycle iodine. That’s the reason the thyroid has the highest selenium content (per gram of tissue) of all our organs. It’s thought that low selenium levels contribute to hypothyroidism through alternate mechanisms related to iodine. For this reason it’s fundamental to eat a diet that contains many selenium-rich foods, such as: Brazil nuts Tuna and sardines Beef and chicken Eggs Legumes Zinc is an essential mineral required to regulate TSH, which is a hormone from the brain that controls how much thyroid hormone your thyroid produces. In fact, the metabolism of zinc and thyroid hormones are closely interlinked, which is why a deficiency can lead to alopecia (hair loss). While zinc deficiency is very uncommon in the developed world, it’s still recommended to eat a variety of zinc-rich foods (8). This includes: Oysters and shellfish Beef and chicken Legumes, nuts and seeds Milk and yoghurt. Okay so I hope you found those 4 tips useful... Are you trying to lose weight? There are many things that help weight loss besides a fad diet and exercising once in a while. It needs proper planning and a lot of determination. It has a big range of antioxidants that help the body break down foods, and help in losing weight. The catechins in green tea are very good for burning fat, because they free fat from fat cells. They also fight free radicals and stop diseases. Switch your regular cup of tea or coffee with a cup of organic green tea. You can drink 3 to 4 cups of green tea a day. 4. Exercise If you really want to lose weight in a healthy way, there’s no way to escape from regular exercise and activity. Doing a mix of mild and hard physical activity will help you lose weight, and control your weight. Also, exercise helps lessen stress and raise your energy, mood, and sleep quality. It lowers the risk of chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and some cancers. It’s best to set a certain time slot in your day for your exercise routine, so that you do not skip it because of the excuse that you don’t have enough time. 5. Eat a Healthy Diet A healthy and low calorie diet is a very important part of a good weight loss plan. Make sure to include fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet, instead of filling up on junk foods. Stay away from fried and fatty foods. Also, don’t take in too much sugar and salt. Look for healthier forms of your favorite foods. For example, eat homemade air- popped popcorn instead of high- calorie, oil- popped popcorn. Don’t eat things made with white flour like white bread, cookies, muffins, pizzas, hotdogs, burgers, pasta, and other foods like that. Choose whole grain and healthier forms of these foods. Their labels should say “100 percent whole grain”, not just “made with whole grains” or “multi- grain”. Eat more fiber and proteins, but less carbohydrates. Proteins will help you feel full for longer, and lessen cravings. Set aside one day a week for a cheat meal. Remember, it’s important not to eat too much. To get the most out of your cheat meal, eat it slowly and try to avoid disturbances while eating. Choose fresh fruit juice, instead of packaged fruit juices, which are full of sugar and preservatives. Use virgin coconut oil in your diet. It is easy to digest, good for your health, and also helps your body break down materials faster. Eat smaller meals, more often. 6. Drink Plenty of Water Drink a lot of water throughout the day to help your body wash out toxins. It is suggested to drink 8 to 10 glasses of fluids a day. Besides helping to clean out toxins, it makes the body burn fat faster. Also, eat more fruits and vegetables that are full of water. 7. Get Proper Sleep Getting proper sleep and relaxation is also very important for weight loss. In fact, not getting enough quality sleep affects your hunger and fullness hormones, negatively changes the way your body break down materials, and changes the way your genetics impact your body mass index (BMI). Refined grains Pasta, bread, and pizza are delicious. However, most of them are made out of refined grains. Refined grains are high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain and type II diabetes. In the process of refinement, the bran and germ of the grain are removed, along with most of the nutrients. But don’t worry, you can still eat grains - just make sure they’re whole. 3. 5 Reasons Armour thyroid Isn't Helping you with Weight Loss
In this video I go over the 5 main reasons that patients who switch from Levothyroxine to Armour thyroid DON'T lose weight. Many patients believe that switching from T4 to NDT will cause immediate weight loss and are disappointed when it doesn't happen. The truth is that Armour thyroid CAN help with weight loss but you need to make sure that these 5 barriers aren't standing in your way: 1. Your dose isn't high enough - Many Doctors under dose patients when converting from T4 medication to NDT by about 50%. Use the chart in this video to make sure your dose is high enough. 2. You need more T3 added to your regimen - Several conditions like euthyroid sick syndrome or tissue level hypothyroidism make it so patients need more T3 than what Armour thyroid provides. So while armour may be a step in the right direction you may need more T3 added to your NDT. 3. You are suffering from Leptin resistance - High leptin levels decrease T4 to T3 conversion and can make weight loss impossible unless it is addressed. Use this video to help you find out if you have leptin resistance and if you need to treat it. 4. You are reacting to fillers in Armour thyroid - Many patients react poorly to the methylcellulose that is used in Armour thyroid. It can reduce the amount of free thyroid hormone that is absorbed when you take this medication. Make sure this isn't limiting the amount of thyroid hormone your body can absorb! 5. Your Reverse T3 is TOO high - High levels of reverse T3 effectively put the brake on your thyroid system and can result in a slow metabolism and symptoms of hypothyroidism. Both of these ingredients are not only good for our health, but also our waistline. A correct intake of these two nutrients will make lose skin go away quicker. Some foods that are high in them are: red bell peppers, parsley, kiwis, broccoli, oysters, liver and whole eggs. Many people find it difficult to incorporate the daily required amount of vitamin C and zinc into their diets. In such cases, buying supplements is a good alternative to avoid nutrient deficiencies. Increase the amount of high protein foods you eat; they are rich in collagen and other amino acids that promote the skin's health and elasticity. While you may use creams to help tighten your skin, you have to make sure they have been made from natural ingredients, and are rich in collagen, retinol, and Vitamins A, E and C. These ingredients are designed to increase collagen and elastin skin levels. Use exfoliants as well, they help eliminate dead skin cells and improve circulation; which lead to healthier and firmer looking skin. “I want you to understand that it is good to feel chilly,” Patrick Rensen says.
