Dog Arthritis Treatment Methods

02:29
http://dogarthritis.visilocal.com for more information on homeopathic dog arthritis treatment. Arthritis in dogs is basically the same as in humans, it is an inflammation of the joints. When the protective cartilage or lubrication, the result is bone on bone rubbing in the joint, which is essentially arthritis. Dog arthritis is quite common, with 1 in 5 dogs suffering with some form of arthritis. Larger breeds are more susceptible to arthritis, due to their vulnerability for hip displasia, and other joint problems. Conditions which can lead to arthritis include obesity, poor nutrition, as well as injuries, such as trauma to the joint or torn ligaments or tendons. Malformation of the dog's bones, can result in an onset of arthritis earlier than normal. Dogs who have more wear and tear on their joints, like show dogs and work dogs, can also have an earlier onset of arthritis. Symptoms of dog arthritis include, licking of the affected joint, falling behind on walks, a reduction in muscle tone, and a mild swelling or heating of the joint. They may also show signs of stiffness when rising or lying down, and may seem reluctant to climb stairs. The lower level of activity can also result in weight gain, which will exacerbate the problem. Dog arthritis treatment includes a healthy diet and exercise, in order to lose weight and keep the muscles in shape. Physical therapy can relieve the symptoms as can aspirin and other pain medications. It is best to get these prescribed by a veterinarian and closely monitor your dogs if you put them on pain medication. They sometimes experience internal bleeding so monitor their stools for a darker color. If they experience darker stools or vomiting, immediately take them off of the pain medication and bring your dog to the veterinarian. There is also a dog arthritis treatment that is natural, and does not have any side effects. These all-natural, plant-based homeopathic blends are designed to help alleviate the symptoms your dog may be experiencing safely and without side effects, so they can resume activity with better mobility and more comfort. Homeopathy is a very unique system of medicine because the ingredients are used at levels generally understood to be non-toxic, with no negative side effects. Dog Arthritis Treatment, Dog Arthritis

Dog Arthritis Treatment with SAM-e

03:22
http://www.dogarthritisblog.info/ Adenosyl methionine or SAM-e is a substance produced by the liver. It was first discovered by G. L. Cantoni in 1952. SAM-e has many functions. Firstly, it promotes cellular growth and repair. Secondly, it helps in the synthesis of several hormones and neurotransmitters. Lastly, studies have shown that SAM-e may help prevent cognitive impairment caused by oxidative damage in brain cells. http://www.dogarthritisblog.info/dog-joint-health-1/dog-arthritis-treatment-with-sam-e/

A big no to giving your dog aspirin with Dr. Laura Brown

06:00
Are Pain Meds for Dogs Safe?   By Jennifer Coates, DVM   Knowing that a dog is in pain is upsetting. So it's an understandable reaction to want to do something — anything — to provide the dog pain relief as soon as possible.   However, as tempting as it may be to reach for an over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or acetaminophen and give it to the family dog, you must avoid them at all costs. Over-the-counter pain meds (OTC medications) and human medications can be very dangerous, even fatal, when used improperly in dogs. Dogs should not be given Advil, aspirin, Tylenol, or any other pain reliever made for human consumption.   NSAIDs and Asprin for Dogs – Are They Dangerous?   Some of the most common over-the-counter pain relievers fall into the category of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs). Common examples include aspirin, baby aspirin ibuprofen, and naproxen. They all work by inhibiting an enzyme called cyclooxygenase that is responsible for the production of prostaglandins that promote inflammation, fever, and pain.   But prostaglandins also play many other roles in the body, including maintaining adequate blood flow to the kidneys, the production of a layer of mucus that protects the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract from stomach acid, and normal blood clotting. When these functions are reduced, dogs can develop vomiting and diarrhea (often bloody), intestinal problems, loss of appetite, bleeding disorders, kidney or liver dysfunction or failure. They may even die without appropriate treatment. It is not safe to give your dog any amount of aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen, or other anti-inflammatory meant for humans.   Problems can arise with NSAID use in dogs for several reasons: Sometimes an owner will give (or a dog will get into) an inappropriately high dose of one or more of these drugs. Certain dogs are especially sensitive to human NSAID brands and can develop dangerous side effects even when a correct dose is given. The concurrent use of other medications (e.g., corticosteroids) and/or the presence of certain health conditions (e.g., gastrointestinal, liver, or kidney disease) can make the use of NSAIDs for dogs more risky than normal.   (NOTE: Cats are especially sensitive to the adverse effects of NSAIDs, but because more dogs are exposed to these medications, a greater number of NSAID toxicity cases are reported in dogs in comparison to cats.)   What About Tylenol for Dogs?   Acetaminophen (Tylenol) presents a slightly different story. Acetaminophen is not an NSAID. No one is exactly sure how it works to reduce pain and fever (it has no effect on inflammation), but when dogs ingest toxic amounts of acetaminophen, it destroys their liver cells, damages the kidneys, and converts hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying molecule in blood, to methemoglobin resulting poor oxygen delivery throughout the body and tissue damage.   (NOTE: Cats are so sensitive to the adverse effects of acetaminophen that just one, regular strength tablet can result in death.)   What Can I Give My Dog For Pain Relief?   For all of the above reasons, you should not give NSAIDs, like aspirin and ibuprofen, or other pain relievers, such as Tylenol, to dogs or other pets without the supervision of a veterinarian. Drug companies have designed specific canine pain medication that are safer and more effective than those that are designed for people. Examples of these modern pain killers include carprofen, deracoxib, etodolac, and meloxicam.   With knowledge of the specifics of a dog’s health history, your vet can make a proper diagnosis to determine which medication and dose is most appropriate for your dog and design a plan for monitoring that will make treatment as safe as possible.   Other Pain Relief Measures   Appropriate medicine is not the only way to provide dog pain relief, however. Chronic inflammatory conditions such as general arthritis often respond well to dietary modification. For example, dog food that is supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids like eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) can reduce joint inflammation and the pain associated with it. Also, overweight dogs benefit greatly from a weight loss plan that includes both diet and exercise.   Foods with a lower caloric density but normal amounts of protein can help dogs lose weight while maintaining muscle mass and strength. Reducing body fat and promoting lean body mass decreases stress on joints and inflammation throughout the body.   The combination of a good diet and weight loss will often lessen if not completely eliminate the need for pain...

Tramadol 50mg Side Effects for Pets

02:00
http://bit.ly/hiparthritis Tramadol is a popular pain relief medication, for both humans and pets. It is taken orally by both humans and pets. Most people who use this drug for their pets based on prescriptions from various reputable vets have found it to be very effective on pains. Instead of working on the affected area like Rimadyl and other pain relief alternatives, Tramadol changes how the pain is felt by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin, and binding to the mu-opioid receptors in the brain. http://ideasforpetcare.com/pet-bounce-review/

PET LOSS MEDICATIONS THAT KILL BEWARE Arthritis Side Effects DEATH DRUG

03:29
- Do you feel guilty over the Death of your Pet heartbroken , and feel devastated by what happened Snickers was unable to take the drug Rimsdyl. The Doctor then gave me the drug, Previcox, for Snickers. He did not educate me on the side effects of this drug. I believe the drug, Previcox, killed my beloved Snickers. Had I known what I know now about this drug, I would never have administered it to Snickers. The drug causes stomach ulcerations. Then, when the stomach is perforated, it attacks the membranes of other organs (liver, kidneys and heart) and shuts them down. Some dogs can take the drugs for months without adverse effects but other dogs can die after only two tablets. The drug is the veterinarians' version of the human drug Voixx (made by Merck, the parent company of Merial). Vioxx caused thousands of deaths and was pulled from the market by the FDA. A lawsuit followed with a multibillion dollar settlement reached. The vet also in july had just given him a prescription for Proin. It has been taken off the market for humans, but still given to animals for incontinence. . What it does is shuts down her liver. Other dogs have died from it, as well. However, Merck/Merial continued to push Previcox without any regard for the tens of thousands of dogs poisoned by this drug.

Knee Arthritis Stretches & Exercises - Ask Doctor Jo

07:49
These knee arthritis stretches and exercises are simple to do and should provide some relief from knee arthritis pain. They are also great for keeping your knees nice and fit. Read Doctor Jo's full blog post about this at http://www.askdoctorjo.com/content/knee-arthritis-stretches-exercises The first stretch is for your calf muscles. Start off with your legs out in front of you. Keep the leg you want to stretch out in front of you. Take a stretch strap, dog leash, belt, or towel and wrap it around the ball of your foot. Relax your foot, and pull the strap towards you stretching your calf muscle. You should feel the stretch under your leg. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds, and do three of them. The next stretch is for the hamstrings. Keep your leg that you want to stretch out in front of you. Try to keep your back straight and just bend at your hips. Keep your leg straight and pull your toes towards you to get an extra stretch. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and repeat three times. The last stretch is for your quad muscles. This time you will lie on your stomach to stretch. Wrap the strap or dog leash around your ankle, and then lie on your stomach. Bring the strap up and around your shoulder so you are comfortable. Then pull the strap towards you bringing the lower leg towards your bottom. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds doing three of them. Now we will move on to the exercises. The first exercise is going to be a quad set. Put your leg straight out in front of you again. You can use a towel roll underneath your knee as a target. Activate your quad muscle by squeezing it and pull your toes toward you at the same time. This will push your knee into the ground. Try to hold this for 5-10 seconds and do 10 of them. Next you will do a short arc quad (SAQ). For this, you will use a foam roll or a rolled up beach towel. You want something big so you have a good bend in your knee. Prop your leg over the roll with your knee on the roll. Try to keep your knee on the roll the whole time, and then lift your foot in the air until your leg is straight. If you pull your toes towards you at the end, this will help activate all the muscles in the leg. Try not to go fast because then you are only using momentum. Go slow and controlled with your movements. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. For the next exercise, you will sit in a chair. This one is called a long arc quad (LAQ). This is similar to the SAQ where you want to go slow and controlled, and then bring your leg up straight out in front of you. Slowly come back down. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. Now you are going to stand up for the last exercises. For the hamstring exercise standing up, you want to keep the top part of your leg as straight as possible in line with your body. It might try to come forward if your muscles are tight, but try to keep it down. Slowly bring your foot back behind you, like you are trying to kick your bottom. Make sure you are going slow and controlled with these. Start of with 10 of these. If you get to 20-25 and it is easy, then you can add ankle weights. The last one is for calf strengthening. With your feet about shoulder width apart, and holding onto something for balance if you need to, come up on your toes bringing your heels off the ground, and slowly come back down. If that becomes easy, you can do this one foot at a time. Start off with ten and work your way up to 20-25. Aspirin and Prostaglandins

08:36
Aspirin, or acetylsalicylic acid, is one of the oldest and most well-known medications for headaches, fever, pain, and even prevention of heart attack and stroke. How does this drug cause relief of these symptoms? Check out this episode of Medicurio to learn about the quite interesting mechanism of aspirin in the body. Detailed Mechanism of Aspirin: There are two major forms of cyclooxygenase (COX) in cells. COX-1 is always made in the cell, while COX-2 is only made during inflammation. Aspirin permanently inhibits the COX-1 isoform (version) by acetylation of its active site. Therefore, aspirin’s effect lasts however long it takes for the cell to transcribe and translate new COX-1 enzymes, which usually takes a few hours. COX-1 decreases fever, pain, and inflammation, but also increases the risk of gastric ulcers by decreasing clotting and stomach mucous production. The COX-2 isoform is thought to only produce prostaglandins involved in fever, pain, and inflammation but not other functions; therefore, making a drug that inhibits COX-2 instead of COX-1 would give all the anti-inflammatory effects of aspirin without the risk of gastric ulcers. Such a drug would be a major upgrade and many companies came up with possible COX-2 inhibitors. One such drug, called rofecoxib or Vioxx, entered the market claiming that it would not cause gastric ulcers. What the drug company did not reveal was that during clinical trials, many patients suffered from heart attacks after chronic use. These problems began to surface once the general public began using Vioxx, leading to withdrawal of the drug and lawsuits against the company. Moral of the story? Research integrity is important, especially for a drug company as people’s lives are at stake. Trivia about Aspirin: It is debated if Felix Hoffmann was the true “inventor” of aspirin. Arthur Eichengrün, a fellow Bayer employee, claimed that he was the one who came up with the procedure and that Hoffmann simply performed the reaction following his guidelines. Bayer has denied this claim. Hoffmann synthesized aspirin for his father, who complained about the taste of salicylic acid that he was taking to treat his arthritis. Aspirin is extremely toxic to cats (which cannot break down aspirin) and to a lesser extent, dogs. Despite this, aspirin can still be used, just at low doses, to treat inflammation in animals. You can overdose on aspirin – at lethal doses, aspirin interferes with energy production in the mitochondria which leads to eventual death. Before death, unique symptoms such as ringing in the ears, hyperventilation, and dizziness, as well as non-specific symptoms such as vomiting and nausea appear. Overdoses are often due to chronic aspirin use, so if any of these symptoms apply to you, speak to a doctor immediately. Aspirin’s effect is increased by ingesting it with caffeine because caffeine is a stimulant, which increases blood flow to carry aspirin around the body faster and begin acting on tissue quicker. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not technically an NSAID because it does not decrease inflammation; however, it also works on COX enzymes so I have lumped it with the other NSAIDs in this video for simplicity.

Electrostimulated Acupuncture as Treatment for Dog Arthritis

02:48
A more recent variant of traditional acupuncture is electrostimulated acupuncture. The technique differs from its traditional counterpart because the needles are attached to a device that generates electrical pulses. The electric treatment is used to provide more stimulation and at the same time shorten treatment time. For more information visit http://www.dogarthritisblog.info.

Supplement for Dog Arthritis DASUQUIN

Dasuquin creates a very high benchmark for supplements -- it is the most recommended joint protector by veterinarians such as myself. My recommendation would be to use it as a baseline treatment, working to an every second day maintenance dose. Add high dose fish oils for their Omega 3 as the next step in dog arthritis treatment and use other drugs and therapies as required. For more information visit http://www.dogarthritisblog.info
