Mental health in Kenya

15:53
Hey I've decided it's time for me to do what I have to do in order to achieve what I want to achieve. We joke about having mental illnesses online but if you're like me at the end of the day your state isn't getting any better. People expect those who have these conditions are supposed to look and act a different way. Constantly gloomy and always wanting to be left alone. I've used to be so social during my primary and secondary years but I still had days when I didn't want to talk to anyone. That was before I thought about it as depression so I was mostly just frustrated. After I figured out what was going on, I didn't know what to make of it. Didn't do a lot of research, never really considered it an illness. As if now I'm on medication and feeling more positive than I used to be. I want that for other people like me. I want you to wake up in the morning and enjoy life as opposed to wanting everything to go away. I want to start with forums where I talk to caregivers(parents and guardians) with the help of psychiatrists. If you have survived a suicide attempt like me, you can come forward and help as well just by sharing your story. I want to give people the option to share with their parents when they're struggling. We know it's not their fault and that's what we have to work towards improving their understanding of the topic. #helpthemunderstand. I hope people will understand what I'm trying to do, respond positively and make donations to help with this cause. However much you can spare will go a long way with helping this cause. So as much as it scares me, I need you to share this video on however many platforms you can. We need to raise awareness on the topic of mental health in our country and others. I know how scary it can be to tell something like this to your parents but ive come to learn that parents will always want the best for you and you know you can count on them. In the end they're the only people you know will always be on your side. Like I said in the video, i wasn't able to get a paybill number so my mom gave me a separate phone just for the contributions so I can keep better track and not get it mixed with my personal sim. The phone number you can send your contributions to is +254796010922 The link for the gofundme account which my cousin helped me open since its not available in Kenya is below. You can use your credit or debit card to donate directly on thegofundme website. Our campaign name is mental health in Kenya. My scars will forever be a reminder that at one point, I gave up. I started self harm last year and I've done it twice. I've only ever done it because I was disappointed by certain people and being the forgiving type, I decided to do it when I allowed myself to be treated the way I was. I knew it wasn't healthy but at that time I wanted to feel something. Even if it was pain. I'm not like that anymore. And you don't have to be either. What I intend to do with the contributions is, One I need to help my parents with clearing my pending hospital Bill, after, I need to print informative pamphlets on mental illnesses with signs to look out for in friends and family, and also organize events where with the help of one or multiple psychiatrists we can help parents under stand that mental illness is not a choice, or being ungrateful to them and with that in hoping more people will be able to open up about how they feel and hopefully get help. #worldsuicidepreventionday

Somalia Mental health - the Story of Abdullahi - Chained for 17 Years Due to Mental illness

18:23
'' A very Sad Story '' ended in Happiness, ....................................................... Abdullahi Yussuf - a mentally ill Somali man. He was chained for 17 years in his tin hut, like an animal, 24 hours a day. His family kept him locked up saying he was a danger to himself and to others. He was unwashed, ignored and isolated. Abdullahi's case is not unusual. In Somalia, there is little understanding or treatment of mental health illness. Men like Abdullahi are the forgotten people of Somalia - known simply as ninka waalan or "the mad man". He used to spend most of his days watching the world moving before him -- placing his chest on a cemented floor, his elbows supporting his hands under his chin. But after 17 years as a chained man, Maryan Hassan, a mental health nurse, came to his rescue. She removed the shackles of his life and gave him a life full of hope. She took him to a clinic where she works. He has been there for the past eight months.. now Abdullahi is no longer isolated. The children were starting to relax around him. And he is able to chat over a simple cup of tea. Abdullahi is now a member of the family:a son, a brother,an uncle.. .................................. https://www.facebook.com/ABDIASKARITUBE?ref=hl https://twitter.com/askaricom

Spirits, Stigma and Crazy: Exploring Mental Health and Illness in Africa

02:43:11
Mental illness is considered a silent epidemic around the world, including throughout Africa. In order to provide culturally responsive mental health care in Africa, we must focus on understanding the cultural context of mental illness, traditional explanatory and treatment models, and ways to strengthen collaboration with traditional and community healers. Drawing on my field research in West, East and Southern Africa, I will examine the connection between culture and wellbeing, the role of traditional cultural/spiritual beliefs and practices, and barriers to adequate mental health treatment. This will be streaming live, so questions will be answered live!

MY TAKE - DEPRESSION | ABUSE | MENTAL HEALTH

13:52
A short video explaining my experience with depression, a little bit about my history with abuse and what to do when people say they are suffering from depression. Mental health is a real problem and too many young Kenyans are dying because no one is giving them the help they are calling out for. Many times it seems like people are attention seeking and they probably are. But the bigger picture is, it's a cry for help.

The Stigma Surrounding Mental Health and Mental Illness

04:19
http://www.TransformingStigma.Com/effects-of-stigma-on-mental-illness.html In this video, Mike Veny, is speaking about the stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness to raise awareness for professionals at a conference. Mike Veny is a mental health speaker and the founder of http://www.TransformingStigma.Com. Examples of stigma include thinking that mental illness is correlated with violence. Statistics show that people with mental illness are more likely to have a violent crime committed against them than committing a violent crime. In addition, people who live with mental illness experience employment discrimination. Search online to learn more about the survey results of mental health provider-based stigma and understanding the experience of clients and families. We need to have more discussion regarding this issue. It's time to change our cultural paradigm and campaign to transform stigma. Australia and Canada are setting the example for transforming stigma. In Canada, the company Bell is doing a incredible job of increasing awareness through it's "Let's Talk" campaign. Bell is setting a good example for how business can help transform stigma. Mental health stigma is in the military (and is experienced by veterans), in the media, at work, in healthcare and just about everywhere in America. Believe it or not, it exists in social work, too. In fact, it affects everyone including mental professionals. In the United States of America, stigma is a huge problem in the black community. African Americans are experiencing difficulties in having conversations about mental health with each other. Despite these challenges, there is hope. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is working hard to address the stigma surrounding minority mental health as a whole. This issue spans across cutures, too - mental health stigma is in the Muslim community, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and China. Check out this video a unique definition and some good quotes about stigma. Also, be sure to check out the Transforming Stigma blog. http://www.TransformingStigma.Com/blog

John Weisz - Youth Mental Health Interventions

04:08
John Weisz was born and reared in Mississippi and received a BA from Mississippi College, in his home town of Clinton. He later served with his wife Jenny in the U.S. Peace Corps, in Kenya, where both worked as teachers. Then Weisz studied at Yale, where he received a Ph.D. in clinical and developmental psychology. He held subsequent faculty positions at Cornell, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and then UCLA, where he built numerous partnerships with southern California community mental health clinics, focused on studying youth mental health care in the real-world contexts where that care is most often provided. Those partnerships produced 14 years of research on psychotherapy process and outcome in everyday clinical practice, and multiple randomized trials of cognitive behavioral therapy for youth depression and anxiety. Efforts to build research partnerships broadened with a move to Massachusetts in 2004, where Weisz served for eight years as President and CEO of the Judge Baker Children's Center, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The research begun in Los Angeles expanded, encompassing a network of community mental health clinics and schools in the greater Boston area, and then other parts of New England. Weisz’s position at Judge Baker was blended with academic appointments, and he now works full-time as a Professor in the Harvard Psychology Department, expanding his body of research on strategies for improving youth mental health care. John Weisz’s research involves development and testing of interventions for youth mental health problems, as well as meta-analyses and systematic reviews characterizing and critiquing the science of youth mental health care. His most recent work involves development and testing of transdiagnostic approaches to youth psychotherapy, including treatment that uses modular design and treatment guided by a small number of broad principles of psychological change. He is especially interested in integrating evidence-based practices with strategies for personalizing treatment to fit individual youth and family characteristics. Weisz’s meta-analyses provide a broad picture of the state of youth psychotherapy research and address specific questions about moderators of psychotherapy benefit. His books include Psychotherapy for children and adolescents: Evidence-based treatments and case examples (Cambridge University Press) and Evidence-based psychotherapies for children and adolescents (Co-edited with Alan Kazdin; Guilford Press).

Sky News, BBC News at Six & Newsnight 3 August 2017 IMPORTANT NOTICE: Update - As this channel will be on holiday for most of August & the current copyright strike expires in mid-September, consideration is being given to foregoing the "channel hiatus" referred to below (as long as no further copyright strikes are incurred in the interim). A final decision will be made in early September. You can view my blog here: https://imincorrigible.wordpress.com/ My other YouTube channels search for: "Still Incorrigible" & "Incorrigible Forever" Original notice: As a result of receiving a "copyright strike" this channel will be going on hiatus shortly. If a channel receives three such strikes it is automatically deleted by YouTube. The primary purpose of my YouTube channels is the preservation of a record of historical events as reported at the time and the receipt of a copyright strike imperils that goal. As a result, in the coming weeks, new uploads will cease on this channel and resume on "Still Incorrigible". Future videos will contain more info as it becomes available.

#ConfidentEitherWay – How Makeup Affects Mental Health | Marie-Pascale Lafrenière | TEDxECUAD

11:48
What is the relation between an everyday use of makeup and substance addiction? In this talk, Marie-Pascale Lafrenière reveals the surprising ways in which makeup can affect mental health from a very young age. Inspired by her own battle with anxiety and depression, she shares why she decided to start the #ConfidentEitherWay movement. Marie-Pascale Lafrenière is a post-media feminist artist from Gatineau, Quebec. She obtained her bachelor’s degree at Université du Québec en Outaouais in 2017 before pursuing an MFA at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her work questions the relations between female representation and mental health. In her performances, videos and art objects, she explores the ways in which pop culture and social media are redefining our perception of the female gender. She also draws inspiration from her own experiences with mental illness. In 2016, she was awarded the Scholarship of Excellence in Visual Arts by the Université du Québec en Outaouais and Axenéo7. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
