It is more common among men than women. Exertional headaches usually consist of a throbbing or pulsating pain that lasts from as short as a few minutes to several hours. The pain is usually severe at the onset, and then gradually decreases. If the headache pain lasts longer than that, you should get it checked out by your doctor. To help get rid of an exercise induced exertion headache you should immediately stop whatever exercise or activity you're doing and focus on taking deep breaths to try and relax your body. Breathe deep into your belly. Doing this should help reduce the headache pain within a few minutes. After that do some light stretching for your neck, shoulders, and back to help release any tension that you have in these areas. After the stretching and deep breathing your headache pain should be reduced and you maybe able to continue on with your workout at a reduced intensity. Lighten up the weights, stop your sets short of failure, and take longer rest breaks between sets. You should purposely train easier like this for the next few workouts and monitor how you feel. As long as you avoid getting the exertion headaches, you can gradually increase your training intensity day by day until you are back to training at 100%. But if the headaches return frequently, then play it safe and get it checked out by your doctor to ensure that there's no underlying medical condition that needs to be addressed. In addition to these tips, your nutrition can play a big role with whether or not you get headaches. Things like your level of hydration, blood sugar, and electrolyte balance all play a role. Today we’re going to talk about a common problem that some people experience when they’re doing, for example, exercises that the head is not in the right position, leading to dizziness. Now, dizziness can be due to a variety of factors. Most commonly, when it is related to postural change, we call it postural blood pressure problems. Now, the body’s blood pressure is regulated in many ways through an automatic mechanism. When the body’s head is below a certain level, in order to get more blood to the brain, the body’s blood vessels automatically constrict and that is intended to bring more blood to the brain so you don’t faint. Now, when this mechanism is defective or not functioning well, then problems can arise. For example, you can feel dizzy. You can feel the room spinning. You can feel even nauseated. You can have headaches and in severe cases, you can faint. The first thing you have to do if you have this type of experience is to get yourself back to a situation where your head is level or above your heart so that your body has the ability to regain its composure. The medical workup including cardiac as well as neurological workup will include checking out your heart, making sure that your carotid blood vessels are okay, there’s no blockage. Make sure your heart is not having any arrhythmias that are causing the heart rate to be dysregulated during these situations. Make sure that your ears and your nose are okay so that you don’t have any postural changes that can affect your balance. Metabolically, you’re going to make sure that your sugar is not low beyond a certain point. If everything checks out, then chances are you’ll be told that this is posture related. There’s really not much you can do if that’s the case, if everything works out. In the case of adrenal fatigue, we do see some postural changes and oftentimes, this can be improved with increasing the vascular volume such as with more fluids as well as more salt. Regulating and normalizing blood pressure often can also be beneficial and helpful. As far as exercise, you have to moderate yourself. Oftentimes, when the body is in a state of adrenal fatigue, the fight or flight response can be activated and when this happens, dizziness can occur as well. There are many, many reasons and you want to make sure that there’s no conventional medical reasons that you cannot check out. If everything turns out to be normal, do look into adrenal fatigue because it is very common. The good news is that, oftentimes, these are spontaneously healing signs. As your body gets stronger, if it is indeed related to adrenal issues, then oftentimes it gets better by itself. Taking medications can have its place if the situation is severe and you don’t want to be in a fainting situation, which can be dangerous to yourself and others. Regulating blood pressure, etc. can be considered with conventional medication. The problem with this is that if you overregulate, you can be a little more dizzy and a little more calm and sometimes walk around like a zombie because you can be sedated in order to avoid these problems. At the same time, if you don’t look at the underlying problem and resolve it, then these masking medications can actually be detrimental and negative to your overall health over time because your problem underneath is really not resolved. If it’s a matter of simple insufficient salt or adrenal weakness, then there are simple ways you can do, from lifestyle, nutrition, and supplementation that can help with the adrenals and then the postural blood pressure changes can resolve. These are the first steps you should take. However, especially if you are older and you have a previous history of heart disease, then you need to see a doctor first and make sure there’s nothing else going on. 4 Types Of Headaches You’ve Never Heard Of—But Could Be Suffering From You know all about tension headaches, cluster headaches, and eye-strain headaches, more than you'd like to about sinus headaches, caffeine withdrawal headaches, and migraine headaches. You've probably lived through your fair share of hangover headaches. Around 45 million Americans regularly suffer from headaches, and while most are the common afflictions above, a much smaller group of people deal with rare, more unusual types. There are hundreds of types of headaches as categorized by the International Headache Classification. To tell them apart, doctors typically need patients to provide a detailed history of what their symptoms feel like, as well as when and how often they occur. Each type of headache has a distinct history, and that history determines what types of tests will be used to confirm a diagnosis. The more a person can think about the features of their headache, the more effective an evaluation is going to be. Here are some of those lesser-known types you should be aware of. Exertion headaches. These headaches occur in the minutes following some kind of physical exertion, including exercise, sex, sneezing, laughing, or even, yep, pooping. Instead, this headache is caused by really, really high blood pressure—in the range of 200/110 or higher. When blood pressure is very high, it's elevated in the brain as well. Blood vessels may be restricting blood flow to the brain. A hypertension headache can feel like that very specific pain you might get from wearing a headband, and it's generally worse in the morning and improves throughout the course of the day, according to the National Headache Foundation. To alleviate the pain, it's crucial to keep BP under control. Giant cell arteritis. The cause of this boring, burning, or jabbing head pain remains unknown, but the condition is extremely serious. We do know it's linked to inflammation and almost always seen in people over the age of 60, who often also feel pain around their ears when chewing with these types of headaches. About one-third of people with giant cell arteritis will go blind, so it's typically considered an emergency diagnosis. Doctors will start treatment with steroids as soon as possible to prevent blindness and dramatically improve the pain. Trigeminal neuralgia. The older you get, the more likely you are to have this pain in the temples and around the jaw. Very sharp pain—like an electric shock—is typically triggered by something like touching the face or brushing the teeth, and people with this condition may experience several "shocks" a day, possibly due to an artery pressing on a nerve. Muscle relaxants might help, according to the National Headache Foundation, but if a patient with these symptoms is younger than 55 or so, it may also be caused by a neurological disease, like MS.

Side effect 4) Nausea Nausea is a pretty common side effect of these products, and unfortunately, it hard to know for sure what to attribute it to; it can be caused by a single ingredient, or a combination of any of the ingredients in the formula. If your preworkout makes you feel nauseaus, try cutting the serving size in half, and mixing it with more water than directed. When it's not due to family history or a hereditary problem or an issue with the kidneys, you have to look at the lifestyle issues again. Alcohol—excess of alcohol or binge drinking can lead to high blood pressure. Also look at your diet. Too much salt—it is actually a risk factor for hypertension. And if you're not exercising—sedentary lifestyle—or if you have diabetes. All of the things that lead to the stiffening of the arteries are the risk factors. Your diet, your exercise, even stress. Diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol...all of these things can lead to high blood pressure. Is high blood pressure treatable without medication? You mentioned a lot of lifestyle factors. If it's not due to a primary issue, as I mentioned—like the kidney or an adrenal issue—then it's truly about lifestyle. It is truly about the choices you make with diet and exercise and how you live your life. I would say watch your alcohol, don't smoke and really watch what you eat, how you move, and how you choose to live. The bottom line on blood pressure is that unless you're dealing with a specific medical condition like the ones Dr. Steinbaum mentioned, most of the interventions that are going to be the most helpful in lowering your blood pressure are lifestyle related—nutrition, exercise and potentially a medication if called for—so check with your doctor and see what will work best for you. And those can be normal, and they're due to hormone changes that are causing all of the other changes that you're feeling in your body at that point. But they should subside, they should just be mild. And of course we all get headaches every once in a while because we haven't eaten enough, we are dehydrated, we need more sleep, or we're just stressed out and having tension headaches. So if you eliminated those possibilities and the pain is persisting or getting worse, especially if you feel like it's one of the worst headaches of your life, you've never had migraines before and you feel like you're having a migraine, maybe you're having vision changes, or auras, or other unusual symptoms associated with the headache, if you have a fever, if it's related to exertion, you have unusual pain in your neck, or if there's anything else going on that's concerning with it, talk with your doctor. They'll ask you more specific questions about the symptoms that you're having, the quality of the pain, what makes it worse, what makes it better, if anything brought it on, and they'll decide if further investigation or treatment is necessary for you. Overweight people are more likely to develop high blood pressure, compared to people of normal weight. 4) Smoking: Smoking causes the blood vessels to narrow, resulting in higher blood pressure. 5) Alcohol intake: The risk may even sometimes include people who drink regularly, but not in excess. 6) High salt intake: Researchers from the University of Michigan Health System reported that societies where people don't eat much salt have lower blood pressures than places where people eat a lot of salt. 7) Mental stress: Various studies have offered compelling evidence that mental stress, especially over the long term, can have a serious impact on blood pressure. Some levels of stress which are not managed properly can raise the risk of hypertension. 8) Diabetes: People with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing hypertension. 9) Pregnancy: Pregnant women have a higher risk of developing hypertension than women of the same age who are not pregnant. Symptoms of high blood pressure typically include: • Headache - usually, this will last for several days. • Nausea - a sensation of unease and discomfort in the stomach with an urge to vomit. • Vomiting - less common than just nausea. • Dizziness - Lightheadedness, unsteadiness, and vertigo. • Blurred or double vision (diplopia). • Epistaxis - nosebleeds. • Palpitations - disagreeable sensations of irregular and/or forceful beating of the heart. • Dyspnea - breathlessness, shortness of breath. This happens because after pumping blood against higher pressure into the blood vessels the heart muscle thickens. • Kidney disease - hypertension often damages the small blood vessels in the kidneys, resulting in kidneys that do not work properly. Eventually the kidneys can fail completely (kidney failure). • Eyes (hypertensive retinopathy) - untreated hypertension can lead to thickened, narrowed or torn blood vessels in the eyes, which can lead to vision loss. Changes in lifestyle can help lower high blood pressure The following are recommended lifestyle changes that can help you lower your blood pressure. Regular exercise: Exercising for 30 to 60 minutes five days a week will usually lower a person's blood pressure by 4 to 9 mmHg. Reducing alcohol consumption: Alcohol consumption is a double-edged sword. Some studies indicate it helps lower blood pressure, while others report the opposite. In very small amounts it may lower blood pressure. Eating healthily: This means eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, good quality unrefined carbohydrates, vegetable oils, and omega oils. Lowering salt (sodium) intake: Studies have shown that even a moderate reduction in sodium intake can lower blood pressure levels by 2 to 8 mmHg. Losing weight: Studies have revealed that even moderate weight loss - just ten pounds - can have a significant impact in lowering elevated blood pressure. If you are overweight, the nearer you get to your ideal weight the more your blood pressure is likely to fall.
