Fainting (Syncope): Get the Facts on Causes

01:51
Syncope - is the medical term for fainting or passing out. It is caused by a temporary drop in the amount of blood that flows to the brain. Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) is one of the most common causes of fainting. Vasovagal syncope occurs when your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes a sudden drop in your heart rate and blood pressure. That leads to reduced blood flow to your brain, which results in a brief loss of consciousness. Vasovagal syncope is usually harmless and requires no treatment. But it's possible you may injure yourself during a vasovagal syncope episode. Also, your doctor may recommend tests to rule out more-serious causes of fainting, such as heart disorders. Symptoms Before you faint due to vasovagal syncope, you may experience some of the following: Skin paleness Lightheadedness Tunnel vision — your field of vision is constricted so that you see only what's in front of you Nausea Feeling of warmth A cold, clammy sweat Yawning Blurred vision During a vasovagal syncope episode, bystanders may notice: Jerky, abnormal movements A slow, weak pulse Dilated pupils Recovery after a vasovagal episode begins soon after fainting, generally in less than a minute. However, if you stand up too soon after fainting — within 15 to 30 minutes or so — you're at risk of fainting again. When to see a doctor Because fainting can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a heart or brain disorder, you may want to consult your doctor after a fainting spell, especially if you never had one before. Causes Vasovagal syncope occurs when the part of your nervous system that regulates heart rate and blood pressure malfunctions in response to a trigger, such as the sight of blood. Your heart rate slows, and the blood vessels in your legs widen. This allows blood to pool in your legs, which lowers your blood pressure. This drop in blood pressure and slowed heart rate quickly diminish blood flow to your brain, and you faint. Common triggers for vasovagal syncope include: Standing for long periods of time Heat exposure The sight of blood Having blood drawn Fear of bodily injury Straining, such as to have a bowel movement Subscribe! http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyEm91Ch1cOtmmF3jqJE7ag?sub_confirmation=1 mDhil Med provides health series and interviews with top notch doctors and health experts to break down taboos and health myths. Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure During Pregnancy

01:49
What are the symptoms of low blood pressure during pregnancy? Classic symptoms of low blood pressure are dizziness, light headedness and even fainting. That's not too far off from how I feel after a bad bout of morning sickness. In that case, it may actually be from dehydration, not low blood pressure. The OBGYN monitors my blood pressure and says it is low. Doctors joke they want your blood pressure as low as it can go without laying you low. Why would they say that? High blood pressure in pregnancy is a killer, from destroying your kidneys to increasing the risk of premature labor and stillbirth. Low blood pressure isn't much of a problem. It is if I pass out. Think of this as the perfect time to eat all the salty stuff you like to bring up the blood pressure. What else could I do? Drink caffeine to get your blood pressure up, assuming it doesn't make you want to throw up. Take lots of rest breaks. I do that already. Get up slowly to minimize the risk of fainting. Lay down if you start to feel faint. Just what I need, getting up off my back to quickly laying back down while my blood pressure yo-yos. Lay on your left side to improve blood flow to your heart. The faintness is driving me nuts, because it's not safe to drive. If you have chronic problems, you need to see a doctor. It could be a sign of internal bleeding. What else would be a concern? You have to see a doctor if you actually have bleeding or chest pain or a bad headache. That could mean the low blood pressure is a sign of a possible heart attack or stroke. As if the baby wasn't enough to worry about. When will I get over this? Blood pressure goes down mid-pregnancy before rising in the third trimester. It will return to normal after you have the baby. Then it will go up due to the stress of having a screaming new arrival.

Nevertheless for some, it is much better than high blood pressure. Many people who have low bloodstream pressure are healthy and have no signs related to lower than normal readings. Yet for others it can cause feeling giddy and fainting or it can also indicate serious heart, endocrine or nerve disorders. Low stress is simply a condition where a person's blood pressure is much lower than typical. It is also called hypotension or syncope, which points to fainting. This can cause symptoms such as dizziness or lightheadedness. Low blood pressure happens when the flow of blood is too low to offer enough oxygen and nutrients to essential internal organs, including the brain, heart, and kidney; the organs do not function normally and may be permanently destroyed. It should be mentioned that unlike high bloodstream pressure, which is described on the basis of blood pressure alone, low blood pressure is identified generally by signs and symptoms of low bloodstream flow. In fact, a lot of people may have a stress of 90/50 and have no signs or symptoms of low stress, and, therefore, not have low blood pressure symptoms. Other folks who normally have a blood pressure of 130/80 may develop hypertension blood pressure lower your blood pressure lower blood pressure immediately how to control blood pressure normal blood pressure level low blood pressure readings treatment for low blood pressure how to prevent high blood pressure effects of low blood pressure blood pressure high blood pressure during pregnancy chronic hypertension causes for low blood pressure foods that reduce blood pressure low blood pressure high pulse what raises blood pressure sudden high blood pressure natural remedies to lower blood pressure risks of high blood pressure lower diastolic blood pressure Orthostatic hypotension is another common form of low blood pressure. This kind of comes from an unexpected change in body position. It happens usually from prone and moving to an upright position. In fact, low stress in healthy people without symptoms or body damage needs no treatment. All patients with symptoms possibly due to low stress should be considered by a doctor. People who have had a major drop in bloodstream pressure from their normal levels even without the development of symptoms also should be examined. Your doctor needs to identify the cause of the reduced blood vessels pressure since treatment will rely upon the cause. Low stress is not as treacherous as high bloodstream pressure. For people who have hypotension, sufficient rest and rest is very important. Also, sleeping in daylight is different from sleeping at night. Persons who have night careers make it a point to sleep during day. Even if you have sufficient sleep low blood vessels pressure still arises. If perhaps you have low blood vessels pressure it is recommended that you have regular the consumption of flat iron to avoid anemia or other disorders that are caused by low blood vessels pressure. Consult your doctor at once if you ever feel dizzy, have chest pains, shortness of breath, and an abnormal heartbeat, fever higher than 101 degrees, headache, and stiff neck or severe spine pain.

Baroreflex Regulation of Blood Pressure, Animation.

How heart rate is controlled by the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system, with overview of baroreceptor resetting. Baroreflex is a rapid negative feedback loop in which an elevated blood pressure causes heart rate and blood pressure to decrease. Reversely, a decrease in blood pressure leads to an increased heart rate, returning blood pressure to normal levels. The reflex starts with specialized neurons called baroreceptors. These are stretch receptors located in the wall of the aortic arch and carotid sinus. Increased blood pressure stretches the wall of the aorta and carotid arteries causing baroreceptors to fire action potentials at a higher than normal rate. These increased activities are sent via the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves to the nucleus of the tractus solitarius – the NTS - in the brainstem. In response to increased baroreceptor impulses, the NTS activates the parasympathetic system – the PSNS - and inhibits the sympathetic system – the SNS. As the PSNS and SNS have opposing effects on blood pressures, PSNS activation and SNS inhibition work together in the same direction to maximize blood pressure reduction. Parasympathetic stimulation decreases heart rate by releasing acetylcholine which acts on the pacemaker cells of the SA node. Inhibition of the sympathetic division decreases heart rate, stroke volume and at the same time causes vasodilation of blood vessels. Together, these events rapidly bring DOWN blood pressure levels back to normal. When a person has a sudden drop in blood pressure, for example when standing up, the decreased blood pressure is sensed by baroreceptors as a decrease in tension. Baroreceptors fire at a lower than normal rate and the information is again transmitted to the NTS. The NTS reacts by inhibiting parasympathetic and activating sympathetic activities. The sympathetic system releases norepinephrine which acts on the SA node to increase heart rate; on cardiac myocytes to increase stroke volume and on smooth muscle cells of blood vessels to cause vasoconstriction. Together, these events rapidly bring UP blood pressure levels back to normal. Baroreflex is a short-term response to sudden changes of blood pressure resulted from everyday activities and emotional states. If hypertension or hypotension persists for a long period of time, the baroreceptors will reset to the “new normal” levels. In hypertensive patients for example, baroreflex mechanism is adjusted to a higher “normal” pressure and therefore MAINTAINS hypertension rather than suppresses it. First Aid For Fainting

02:49
First aid for fainting, step by step. Fainting is loss of consciousness caused by a temporary lack of oxygen to the brain. When a person faints, the loss of consciousness is brief. The person will wake up as soon as normal blood flow is restored to the brain. Blood flow is usually restored by lying flat for a short time. This position puts the head on the same level as the heart so that blood flows more easily to the brain. Prevent unconsciousness If a person is feeling faint, unconsciousness may be prevented by sitting with the head between the knees or lying flat with the legs raised. A person who has fainted should lie flat for 10-15 minutes after regaining consciousness to give the system a chance to regain its balance. Standing up too soon may bring on another fainting spell. Pregnant women frequently feel faint. Fainting may also occur as a result of low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can occur if a person skips a meal or has diabetes. Fainting can also be caused by: 1. prolonged coughing 2. straining to defecate or urinate 3. blowing a wind instrument too hard 4. remaining in a stuffy environment with too little oxygen When an older person feels faint upon turning the head or looking upward suddenly, the cause could be osteoarthritis of the neck bones. Osteoarthritis damages the cartilage between the neck bones and causes pressure on blood vessels leading to the brain.

8 Foods You Should Eat To Manage Your Hypotension - Best Orthostatic Hypotension Treatment Do you regularly suffer from hypotension? Increase your intake of these foods and find out how good they are at helping regulate your blood pressure without exposing your body to side effects. Today's video will discuss 8 Foods You Should Eat to Manage Your Hypotension. Hypotension is a medical condition that consists of lower than normal blood pressure. It often causes vertigo and dizziness, and sometimes produces fainting, headaches, and weakness. If it only occurs for a few seconds or minutes, it needs attention so that it does not become recurring. Here, we’d like to share 8 healthy foods that will help you manage this problem. 1. Dark chocolate, People with hypotension can consume moderate amounts of chocolate as a preventative measure. This tasty food improves blood flow in your arteries and helps get blood pressure back to normal. 2. Coconut water, Coconut water is a natural drink with high levels of electrolytes and antioxidants that help with low blood pressure. Some people consider it a better option than popular sports drinks, since it replaces lost minerals without added chemicals. It’s very low in calories compared to store-bough electrolyte drinks and thus is great for hydration. In addition, it improves cellular oxygenation and helps fight symptoms of hypotension. 3. Cheese, Cheese contains significant levels of sodium, which is actually good for managing hypotension (while of course being bad for hypertension.) Eaten in small portions, it helps establish good blood flow through your arteries and helps with problems related to this condition. However, it’s important to clarify that cheese should not be eaten in excess, since it can increase your blood pressure too much and become dangerous for your health. 4. Nuts, Nuts are an excellent option whether you have high blood pressure or low blood pressure. That’s because of their high levels of vitamin B and healthy fatty acids, which get your blood flow back to normal. They give your body an energy boost, making them great at alleviating the lethargy and weakness that hypotension causes. Do you regularly suffer from hypotension? Also, changing one medicine can very oftenchange the dosage of different medicine and so affect the blood pressure. With psychiatric meds: when patients with a chronic anxiety gets better (i. e. the anxiety goes away) the blood pressure can go down. So, often, the first sign of improvement is a decreased blood pressure. More: https://youtu.be/2UBDaW_DfLM Subscribe to our channel!

Service Dog Scent Training Tutorial for High Heart Rate Alert

14:55
Make sure to watch my "touch" tutorial first! https://youtu.be/9HKM4CAsjNc This is how I taught Benny to alert to high heart rate/syncope. Hopefully this will help other handlers learn how to do the same. I got tired of answering the same question ("OMG how did you train Benny to alert to high heart rate/syncope???") over and over, so I finally made a detailed video! My fainting episodes are directly related to problems with tachycardia (high heart rate) from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. I am on heart medication that affects my heart rate, so 120 bpm is considered high for me WHILE I'M ON THAT MEDICATION (I have been on it for awhile now and don't see myself getting off it anytime soon). Off of that medication, a high number is more like 150-160 bpm. ***KEEP IN MIND that everyone's heart rate levels will be different. 120 bpm is not technically high for someone off of medication with POTS. However, Benny's alert at that heart rate gives me time to prepare for the oncoming dizziness that always follows, because if my heart rate is already at 120 bpm, it's only going to go up from there. I will pass out if I do not take a break. I know this is true for myself based on past experiences and past syncope episodes. If I can sit or lie down in a safe place, have Benny do his cover response, and get my heart rate lowered, then I can avoid passing out. Simple as that. I do feel some symptoms of dizziness at 120 bpm, but they come on stronger as my heart rate increases (obviously). But, remember that everybody's bodies are different, so be sure to find a heart rate that you personally feel will be beneficial to have your dog alert to. Today we’re going to talk about a common problem that some people experience when they’re doing, for example, exercises that the head is not in the right position, leading to dizziness. Now, dizziness can be due to a variety of factors. Most commonly, when it is related to postural change, we call it postural blood pressure problems. Now, the body’s blood pressure is regulated in many ways through an automatic mechanism. When the body’s head is below a certain level, in order to get more blood to the brain, the body’s blood vessels automatically constrict and that is intended to bring more blood to the brain so you don’t faint. Now, when this mechanism is defective or not functioning well, then problems can arise. For example, you can feel dizzy. You can feel the room spinning. You can feel even nauseated. You can have headaches and in severe cases, you can faint. The first thing you have to do if you have this type of experience is to get yourself back to a situation where your head is level or above your heart so that your body has the ability to regain its composure. The medical workup including cardiac as well as neurological workup will include checking out your heart, making sure that your carotid blood vessels are okay, there’s no blockage. Make sure your heart is not having any arrhythmias that are causing the heart rate to be dysregulated during these situations. Make sure that your ears and your nose are okay so that you don’t have any postural changes that can affect your balance. Metabolically, you’re going to make sure that your sugar is not low beyond a certain point. If everything checks out, then chances are you’ll be told that this is posture related. There’s really not much you can do if that’s the case, if everything works out. In the case of adrenal fatigue, we do see some postural changes and oftentimes, this can be improved with increasing the vascular volume such as with more fluids as well as more salt. Regulating and normalizing blood pressure often can also be beneficial and helpful. As far as exercise, you have to moderate yourself. Oftentimes, when the body is in a state of adrenal fatigue, the fight or flight response can be activated and when this happens, dizziness can occur as well. There are many, many reasons and you want to make sure that there’s no conventional medical reasons that you cannot check out. If everything turns out to be normal, do look into adrenal fatigue because it is very common. The good news is that, oftentimes, these are spontaneously healing signs. As your body gets stronger, if it is indeed related to adrenal issues, then oftentimes it gets better by itself. Taking medications can have its place if the situation is severe and you don’t want to be in a fainting situation, which can be dangerous to yourself and others. Regulating blood pressure, etc. can be considered with conventional medication. The problem with this is that if you overregulate, you can be a little more dizzy and a little more calm and sometimes walk around like a zombie because you can be sedated in order to avoid these problems. At the same time, if you don’t look at the underlying problem and resolve it, then these masking medications can actually be detrimental and negative to your overall health over time because your problem underneath is really not resolved. If it’s a matter of simple insufficient salt or adrenal weakness, then there are simple ways you can do, from lifestyle, nutrition, and supplementation that can help with the adrenals and then the postural blood pressure changes can resolve. These are the first steps you should take. However, especially if you are older and you have a previous history of heart disease, then you need to see a doctor first and make sure there’s nothing else going on.
