How I Used SketchUp to Design My Garage/Workshop
This is my thought process from start to finish on designing a layout for the garage workshop using SketchUp. I am definitely not a garage design professional although I believe my thought process is pretty solid. SketchUp will save you headaches in design down the road; USE IT.

Workshop organization ideas are easy to find, but these are the solutions that worked for us. Having everything either up on the walls using vertical storage or on rolling casters was a big goal of ours, because square footage is so limited. The shelf and rail systems are great and adjustable, we love the metal pegboards, and the track system for longer items works great too!

Collecting Material Samples for Your Workshop
Sean shares his collection of material samples that he uses for his workspace and Tested's workshop. These samples become invaluable when figuring out what kind of resins to use for casting, material for laser cutting, and even fabric for cut and sew work. This print job wasn't cheap, but it was worth it. Collectively, these signs will form a mural on my garage door. The artwork was designed by Sketchytrails, or Kristina. Between her, the printer, and myself, we needed to get the sizing and spacing just right to fit in these cutouts. Between the weight of the insulation and the mural, my garage door is going to need heavier springs. The mural is dedicated to my three main sponsors, Diamondback, Box, and of course my Patrons. In June they chose a Taco bike for their logo. Next year my Patrons will choose something else, and we’ll update the mural with a new panel. This piece was designed to look like an extension of the shop, as if we’re standing on this cliff overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. With this mural complete, it’s time for me to show you how the shop has changed. Back in the spring, we built this workshop with pretty basic tools and supplies. From the start I installed a bench grinder, and a shitty vice. You guys wanted me to get a refrigerator, but I decided against it on account of the noise and heat. I did get a speaker system though, and an air compressor. For all of you who requested a flat screen tv, I got something better. This projector is for live streaming. With a 90 inch projection, I can read your comments from across the shop while working on bikes. Of course the lights need to be dimmed to make it visible, but that’s what I get for using an $85 Amazon Projector. Maybe we’ll upgrade this in the future. The foam floor has been holding up great, and it’s easy to keep clean too. As long as it’s dry, this blower makes quick work of leaves, dust, and dried up mud from rides. I use it every day. When the shop is clean it feels just like another room in the house. Of course, with such a huge door the shop seems to accumulate bugs. I found a solution for that too. You can throw shop towels at them but there are just too many. While bug zappers are next to useless outdoors, this one works like magic. With all the lights off and the door closed, this place is a ghost town by morning. This ladder has also become a tool I use every day. For that reason, it lives right next to the work bench on this hook, ready for action on a moment’s notice. Since the original build I added a lot of things out of necessity. This second bike rack will be great for guest parking, and these shelves will hide anything I don’t want laying out in the shop. I even use this box to organize my spare hardware, with dedicated containers for machine screws, chain, lag bolts, and rubber. Eventually I’ll need something bigger. Most shops have dedicated sticker space. This metal cabinet also stores my gear, from helmets to camera batteries. Speaking of which, we built this charging case during a livestream. It opens up to reveal a plug, which powers this usb hub. This can charge all of my cameras and batteries at once, in the shop or on the road. While I do keep most of my non bike tools tucked away, the left side of the pegboard holds the stuff I use most, like sockets, cordless power tools, and drill bits. While the bins under the pegboard have proven useful, I’m already starting to outgrow them. Most shops are a work in progress. My home bike shop has been dubbed the hackshack by my subscribers. It’s a set for this channel, but also a very functional workspace for everything from hacks to legitimate bike repairs. I hope you found this shop update entertaining. Before you ask where I got something in the shop, check the description for links. There’s also a link to the original build video from the spring. Let me know what you think, and tell me about your shop below, even if it’s the corner of your living room or trunk of your car. Now that my shop is finally done, we can get back to Berm Creek. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

Building The Woodshop
This is about how I built my wood shop. We decided to move from our previous home for a variety of reasons. I saw the move as an opportunity to gain a bigger shop for my wood working hobby. The house we found had everything we wanted, except for a shop or even a garage. It did have a non functioning indoor pool. We thought this space would make a nice wood shop. I could just build a floor over the pool and have a shop. As we got further into the inspection process, it was looking as though fixing the structure over the pool was going to be expensive. It looked like we would have to put a bunch of money into a structure that was not really a wood shop and not a functioning pool either. It made more sense to take out the pool and structure, and then build a wood shop from the ground up. We started this project by regrading our side yard to gain access to the pool in the backyard. Once we had access, we took out the pool. We half filled the hole where the pool was with compacted gravel. I realized that if we sank the shop into the ground I could have the ceiling height I had always wanted in the shop and preserve the view from the house. The design of the shop is a box with a shed roof. The roof wraps down the east side of the structure. I like to think of it as a slightly open toolbox. The entire shop is laid out on a 24 inch grid. The windows and doors fall within this grid. I had a general contractor built the shell and then I built the windows and interior. The interior walls are comprised of a 34 inch concrete stem wall at the base. Above that is a 9 foot, plywood wall. In the space above the plywood wall and below the shed roof is poly carbonate panel to form a clerestory. The tool layout in the shop is divided into 4 areas: an area near the door for material storage and prep, a central area for general wood working, and two areas near the back of the shop, one for turning and one for metal working. woodshop tour: http://youtu.be/XmDAInbnPYQ band saw video: http://youtu.be/jupHDlunwjg jointer video: http://youtu.be/l55YFRHBGx4 http://www.frankmakes.com/

19 Building garage cabinets part 1 of 2
This was a physically challenging (for me) cabinetry project in which I build a five shelf, six level, and 36 doored garage storage system. The construction plan is simple, cheap, strong, and tested. This is perhaps the first time I've ever had a garage uncluttered with the normal garage storage stuff. I don't normally do "how-to" videos, but I'm pretty confident in this design, as I have a similar setup in my workshop.

How I Store Architectural Materials
See how I store architectural materials in the studio, learn how to begin building your own sample library, and discover all my favorite print, video and online material-related resources. Favorite Books: * Constructing Architecture (shown) - http://amzn.to/2w4Td06 *Detail in Contemporary Glass Architecture - http://amzn.to/2f99slS *Detail in Contemporary Timber Architecture - http://amzn.to/2f9eI9b *Detail in Contemporary Concrete Architecture - http://amzn.to/2f9CAtn *Translucent Building Skins: Material Innovations in Modern and Contemporary Architecture - http://amzn.to/2u4N4Rr *Fundamentals of Building Construction - http://amzn.to/2uWJ2t7 Phaidon series: *Wood http://amzn.to/2u4T6kQ *Concrete http://amzn.to/2f8Y2if *Brick http://amzn.to/2w7olJy We’re all limited by the amount of space we have available to store things and material samples can take up a lot of room. I’ve seen many types of storage racks used in studios where I’ve worked and I’ve tried a number of things myself here in the studio – from metro shelving, to archival folios and wooden, felt and cardboard boxes and bookcases. Here’s the problem with all of these: they all keep the materials hidden. So although they’re great from an organizational standpoint from a creative standpoint they're sort of stifling. I’m much less likely to grab a material while designing to help me solve a problem or during a meeting if I have to dig through boxes to find what I’m looking for. So when I stumbled across this inexpensive baking cart: ( http://amzn.to/2i9IFXJ ) I wanted to try it out. The verdict? I love it so far. Here’s why: 1) It’s intentionally limiting. 2) I like the archival almost surgical feel of this setup. 3) Easy access and it's all in view. 4) It's mobile. 5) It's flexible and I can use it to store my studio essentials too. 6) The trays make great backgrounds for photography projects too. 7) It's interactive allowing clients to choose appropriate samples alongside me. Quick, easy, cheap storage shelves
Simple shelves to make the most of your storage space. Wood cost about $70. You get about 64 sqft of storage, and 32 linear feet of shelf. Materials needed: 2 sheets of 4x8 ply wood (ripped lengthwise, provided free at HD and Lowes) 18 2"x2"x8' 108 2" screws 68 1" screws 1 staple gun (optional) 1 electric drill (but two is better!) 1 saw (preferably a miter saw, though any would work) Start to finish it takes about 4 hours cut list 24 18" 2x2 - these crosspieces will go between the uprights 24 Custom height 2X2 - I use 20 1/2" for two levels and 15 1/4 for two levels. Each level needs 6 of whatever length you choose. These are the uprights. tip: if possible, cut more than one board at a time. My saw cut 3 2x2's at once without a problem. Assemble the squares by placing two crosspieces between two uprights to form a square. tip: hold the squares together with staples first. The staples make screwing the squares together go much faster than trying to brace each one individually by hand or clamp. Countersink each joint about 1/2 an inch. Use one 2" screw to join each corner. Press hard to keep the joints nice and tight. After the squares are assembled, attach a rail across three using a 2" screw. Repeat on the other side. Use staples or a partner to stabilize. Be careful not to try to screw through a screw on the other layer. Repeat on the other side. Place the plywood on top. Square the frame to the plywood. mark 3/4 of an inch in and mark every foot along the perimeter of the plywood. Counter sink (not too deep, just enough to cover the head). Use 1" screws to attach sheathing to frame. Put three screws through the squares as well: one through each upright and one in the middle. Countersink two holes in the bottom crosspiece of the squares. You will use these holes to attach each layer to the layer below. It's probably worth adding some diagonals at least to the bottom layer for stability, thought I don't in this video. Without some diagonals these are not good stand alone shelves for the middle of a room. Pushed against wall, they're great. Don't forget to anchor the top to the wall so that they don't fall over on anyone. I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor)

Garage Over a Full Basement Design in Bozeman, MT
In this program I summarize my design build process for a garage over a full basement. The Design This garage over a full basement design came about because of challenging site conditions. Building a three car garage on a steep slope with a standard slab and stem wall foundation would have required over 200 cubic yards of compacted fill. This option would have required trucking in fill and was cost prohibitive. In addition the down slope perimeter foundation frost walls would have been in excess of 14’ tall. This was not an efficient use of time and resources’ so I considered other options. As the alternative I decided to take the same area that would have been filled with compacted fill and create a full 900 sq. ft. walkout basement below the three car parking slab. Structure The big questions were how to support the weight of that suspended parking slab, as well as how to get it formed. For this garage over a full basement design I did my research and decided on pouring a slab over a combination of engineered structural I beams and steel pan decking. These interlocking steel pans are a permanent stay in place form that we pour the slab on. The ribbed profile of these steel pans interlock with the concrete and provide an additional level of positive reinforcement. Engineering Once I finished the overall design and my working drawings, I hired a local engineering company to check my structural plan, size the steel beams, spec the pan thickness, and calculate the size and layout of the steel rebar. I also retained the engineers as special inspectors to verify and document the execution of the engineering details for this garage over a full basement project. Upper parking slab drainage Garage slabs require slope for drainage. Thickening the back end of the slab to get a slope was not an option. To get the needed slope we nested the steel pan decking into a sloped ledge that had been formed into the perimeter of the exterior walls. This allowed for a consistent slab thickness front to back and provided the needed slope for drainage. The upper slab preparation was extensive. We dropped our steel I beams into place with a boom truck. Our precut steel pans were put down over the supporting I beams, and an extensive matt of steel rebar was layed out per engineering specs. Before we poured I consulted with my plumber and we decided to install pex in the parking slab in case the owners wanted to heat this upper level. Basement Living Area This garage over a full basement design called for a small kitchen and a bathroom, which required some under slab plumbing. We also installed pex tubing for a future hydronic heating system. The basement walls were waterproofed and insulated before backfill. The lower level walls of the walkout area and the entire upper garage structure are standard wood frame construction. The finished product This project was a combination of structural and esthetic issues that challenged my creativity and problem solving abilities. Creating this garage over a full basement living area was a great experience from both a design and build perspective, and ultimately took my design and build skills to a whole new level. This structure turned out to be a nice compliment to the main house and a valuable asset to the new owners.

Shipping Container Workshop
Necessity is the brother of all invention and there’s nothing that we need more than a workshop at the cottage. The biggest challenge is going to be figuring out how to make this massive two-and-a-half ton repurposed shipping container fit into the natural surroundings. What projects should we make next? Make an Industrial Drawer Cabinet - Forme Industrious
Industrial Styled workshop Drawers/ Lathe Cabinet. Made from 75 x 75 mm Steel for the 4 legs, 50 x 50 for the rest of the box structure. I have a heap of 19mm reclaimed plywood so I used that for the top, sides and drawer cases. The Drawer front is reclaimed Pine shelving. I made the drawer bases from old metal signage as I have so many sheets I have to use it some how, rather than buy more ply. (Ply, would be my first preference however). As the Ply was all painted with an industrial finish (Grey) I paint stripped and sanded the paint off, then stained in Walnut. Clear Wipe on Poly and Bee's Wax is used to finish. I made the Drawer runners also to cut down on costs though I would much prefer to use the sliding drawers runners. If this was being built for a customer I would use the roller bearing sliders for the drawers. The Drawer Handles are made from ReBar and Angle. No welding. I machined a slight shoulder on the Rebar ends so once installed that cannot slide out. I love it..........I love it. Oh, it is heavy as all hell too. How to build a Pole Building
I have Lowes Coupons!!!! $20 off $100 / 10% off up to your total purchase of $5000.00 @ https://www.craigheffernan.com Hello, Iʼm Jenny for Heffernan Construction Company. Today we are going to show you how to build a 24 foot by 32 foot pole building. We hope you find this video useful, and please donʼt forget to subscribe to see our upcoming videos. We used a skid steer with an attached auger saves a lot of time. It digs the holes 18 inches wide by 52 inches deep The concrete is cured solid and ready for the 4x6 treated post to sit on. All 4 corners are set first. They are straightened and plumbed. To assure that the building is square, we pull a diagonal measurement reading both ways. If each measurement is the same, its off to a square start. A treated 2 by 10 is used for the bottom girt board while The remaining horizontal boards are regular 2 by 6s. The vertical boards are 2 by 4s, and they are used on the corners, window & door openings. The nails used are pneumatic 3 1/4 inch and they are ACQ approved for the treated posts. These nails will not rust or corrode due to the chemicals of the treated lumber. For the garage door header we sandwich two 2 by 10s with 1/2 inch plywood glued in between. This header will have minimum weight load since it is on a non bearing wall. It will only have to hold itself, not the weight of the roof load. The roof trusses have a 24 foot span with 1 foot overhang at a 4/12 pitch. They are put 24 inches on center to accept R-38 blanket insulation. They are light enough to manage by hand, if any larger we would use a crane to lift in place. When installing trusses, always read the enclosed safety packet that come with them. It will guide you on how to safely handle and brace them. The roofing material is an energy star rated 26 gauge pre painted panel. The panels were precut to an exact measurement. We use matching color screws with a built in rubber washer to fasten the roof panels. The screw pattern is in a straight line and fastened tight to the 2 by 4 purlins. We used a 32 inch 9 light steel door. It is energy star rated and will swing inward. The pole building gets 5 windows that are also energy star rated. They are double pane, single hung and have built in nail fins. We outsource the gutter work. This company is set up to run very long continuous lengths of aluminum gutter. They install all the hangers, end caps, and gutter sealant. Also the guys punch out the hole and install the downspout drop. Then we take over for the easy install. Finally the garage door!! We purchased this door online for a 25% total tax and delivery savings. The local garage door company and the big box stores were overpriced. So we went online and ordered. They shipped the 7 1/2 foot by 16 foot custom insulated door directly to the job site. it took less than 3 weeks and arrived with easy to understand instructions. We saved 25% plus we installed it ourselves for additional savings. We were so pleased we produced a detailed instructional video to show you, the viewers how easy it was. Thank you again, as i am Jenny for Heffernan Construction, and "please" subscribe.

DIY Shed AsktheBuilder Pier Forms Complete and Ledge Problem
http://www.AsktheBuilder.com founder, Tim Carter, has all the DIY shed piers in place with lots of backfill dirt around them. The dirt helps hold the piers in place as concrete is placed in them. The dirt also helps prevent blowouts in case the pier form tries to explode under the pressure and weight of the concrete.
