What if you could lose weight simply by changing your plate?

There is a reason why Americans are piling on the pounds. Food containers -- and therefore portions -- have grown beyond all proportion. What if you could lose weight simply by changing your plate? An interesting -- and curious -- study published in the International Journal of Obesity looked at the sizes of the food and the heads of the apostles on 52 paintings of the Last Supper, and found that the meal portions and plate sizes have grown considerably over the last 1,000 years: plate sizes by 66% and bread size by 23%. Without going that far back in time, a glance at the average size of plates today reveals that they are nearly 50% larger than the first courses of the 1900s. If our grandparents ate from plates of about 21 centimetres in diameter, in other words, we now eat from plates of more than 32 centimetres! And this is not just for aesthetic reasons dictated by the dogmas of nouvelle cuisine. Numerous studies (such as this one, this one or this one) have demonstrated that the larger our food containers are, the more we eat. This is for two reasons. The main one is a simple optical effect studied by Joseph-Rémi-Leopold Delboeuf and developed by Hermann Ebbinghaus, which we can apply to food: when you see the same amount of food placed on a larger plate, it creates the illusion of being much less. This means that we fill up larger plates with more, and smaller ones with less. (inserire immagine) Delboeuf's illusion Delboeuf As a result, then, in the first case we eat more (and here's the second reason) because for socio-psychological reasons we tend to finish what we've got on our plates, especially if it's particularly appetising. Still on the subject of optical perceptions, a study by the Georgia Institute of Technology found that one of the few ways to reduce this perception is through colour: if we create a contrast with the food by changing the colour of the plate, we tend to serve portions approximately 20% smaller, and by changing the colour of the tablecloth these become 10% smaller. Colour combinations therefore increase the desire for food, while a smaller plate deceives the eye when it comes to perceiving quantity and makes us eat less. All these studies, effectively summarised in this infographic , show that the sizes of plates and other food containers underlie obesity problems, especially in the United States where weight gain has grown exponentially since the 1980s. If we then add the fact that more and more people (especially poorer people) eat junk food, it's...game over. This partly explains why people such as the French, who notoriously consume fatty foods, are thin, or why Asian people are. Their food containers, and therefore portions, are limited. The size of an average yoghurt in a French supermarket, for example, is 125 g, while in the US it's 227 g, and similarly a Coca Cola is 330 ml in France vs 500 ml in the US. An average Chinese restaurant in France offers 244 g portions where in the US this would be 418 g, and that's without going into fast food where French portions are around 189 g, compared to 256 g in the US. All of this is closely linked to life expectancy: the Japanese lead the field with an average age of 83, followed by the Australians and Israelis. In Italy, we can hope to see the sun rise until the age of 82, and the French until the age of 81. For Americans, however, this goes down to 79. Fast Weight Loss Rule #1: Put Away the (Food) Scale "Portion control isn't about measuring; it's about ordering two appetizers instead of an entrée and cutting back on bread if you have pasta." —Bethenny Frankel, author of Naturally Thin. Fast Weight Loss Rule #2: Avoid "white" carbohydrates Avoid any carbohydrate that is — or can be — white. The following foods are thus prohibited, except for within 1.5 hours of finishing a resistance-training workout of at least 20 minutes in length: bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, pasta, and fried food with breading. If you avoid eating anything white, you'll be safe. Fast Weight Loss Rule #3: Eat the same few meals over and over again The most successful dieters, regardless of whether their goal is muscle gain or fat loss, eat the same few meals over and over again. Just remember: keep it simple. Pick three or four meals and repeat them. Almost all restaurants can give you a salad or vegetables in place of french fries or potatoes. Surprisingly, I have found Mexican food, swapping out rice for vegetables, to be one of the cuisines most conducive to the "slow carb" diet. Most people who go on "low" carbohydrate diets complain of low energy and quit, not because such diets can't work, but because they consume insufficient calories. A 1/2 cup of rice is 300 calories, whereas a 1/2 cup of spinach is 15 calories! Vegetables are not calorically dense, so it is critical that you add legumes for caloric load. Some athletes eat 6-8x per day to break up caloric load and avoid fat gain. I think this is ridiculously inconvenient. I eat 4x per day: 10am -- breakfast 1pm -- lunch 5pm -- smaller second lunch 7:30-9pm -- sports training 10pm -- dinner 12am -- glass of wine and Discovery Channel before bed Fast Weight Loss Rule #4: Don't drink calories Drink massive quantities of water and as much unsweetened iced tea, tea, diet sodas, coffee (without white cream), or other no-calorie/low-calorie beverages as you like. Do not drink milk, normal soft drinks, or fruit juice. I'm a wine fanatic and have at least one glass of wine each evening, which I believe actually aids sports recovery and fat-loss. Recent research into resveratrol supports this. Fast Weight Loss Rule #5: Take one day off per week I recommend Saturdays as your "Dieters Gone Wild" day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don't want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn't down regulate from extended caloric restriction. That's right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Now these drinks are calorie free, which technically should help people lose weight and prevent sugar-related diseases… 1:10 - However, the evidence for these beverages having any use is completely nonexistent. Which brings me to my first terrible aftermath from drinking diet sodas, side effect #4: Metabolic syndrome. 1:29 - There is a lot of evidence supporting the fact that regularly drinking diet sodas can actually cause what researchers call “Metabolic syndrome”... Which is a series of risk factors that can lead to diabetes, stroke and in extreme cases, heart attacks. 1:50 - Now this condition is defined as having or experiencing at least 3 of the following symptoms - excessive belly fat or clinical obesity, high blood pressure, high fasting glucose (those with sugar-packed diets), high triglycerides and low amounts of your body’s good cholesterol. Drinking “calorie free” beverages instead of sugary ones does not appear to be helpful against the metabolic syndrome. 2:03 - In fact, looking at the research, sugar is really not the only culprit that is affecting your health like the mainstream media is making it appear… And just because diet sodas are “sugar free”, it doesn’t mean that they are healthy… 2:21 - In a study published in the journal Circulation in 2008, which followed 9,514 people for 9 years, drinking artificially sweetened beverages was associated with a 34% greater risk of developing the metabolic syndrome. 2:50 - Now onto side effect #3: There is an association between diet soda and depression. 3:30 - Nutrition and dietary experts are relating these findings to once again, the myriad of chemicals and synthetic ingredients found within diet drinks. 4:00 - Side effect #2: Drinking diet soda increases your risk for diabetes. 4:50 - Now, as everyone knows, the past decade of health surveys have revealed massive increases in populations develops diabetes… This disease is highly associated with obesity and sugar consumption, so most believe that replacing sugary beverages with calorie-free drinks would help… 5:17 - But according to the reports - it’s quite the opposite. A study of 6,814 individuals aged 45-85 years, daily consumption of diet soda was associated with a 67% increased risk of type II diabetes. In another French study, women were studied for 14 years and it was found that women who consumed the most diet drinks had a 121% greater risk of developing type II diabetes. 5:46 - I hate to be the barer of bad news - especially because the main reason people switch to diet drinks is to cut back on calories in order to lose weight… However, the numbers don’t lie people. 6:15 - And now, the final side effect. Drinking diet soda can actually make you fat. 6:38 - There are even many short-term trials that show that artificial sweeteners can increase appetite and food intake in the short-term compared to sugar. 6:50 - So the take away here guys is to not to choose between diet and regular soda - it’s to forego both. And when I say addicting I mean addicting these are foods that aren't only bad for you but they make you crave more. Not only at that particular moment but you'll find yourself craving these Foods days after you've already consumed them. So if you're trying to lose weight or burn fat your best bet is to stay away from these ingredients. Now these aren't foods that I just randomly chose the foods that I'm going to talk about are actually based on a study. There's a scale known as the Yale food addiction scale it's the most commonly used tool to assess food addiction. And researchers at the University of Michigan studied 518 people and their addictive eating patterns. The way that the study was set up was that all participants got a list of 35 Foods both processed and unprocessed. And for each one of these Foods they had to rate How likely they were to experience problems on a scale of 1 for not addictive at all to 7 for extremely addictive. The crazy thing is that out of the 518 participants right around 8 percent of them were diagnosed with full-blown food addiction and 92% of them had some addictive behavior towards certain foods. So it's pretty safe to say that most people have at least one food out there that they're super addicted to. Which is absolutely fine as long as you eat that food in moderation. If you can't eat it in moderation or in sensible portions then you should stay away from these Foods at least while you're trying to burn fat. Anyway the list that they came up with had pizza at the very top as most addicting rated at a 4.01 out of 7. Pizza is super processed and it has a lot of fat it has cheese which itself has shown to be addicting and it also has a whole bunch of simple carbs. So it's easy to see why pizza was rated number one. Number two was chocolate the Coco present in chocolate itself can change our moods combine this with the added sugar in every chocolate bar and you have a 3.73 at a 7 on the addicting scale. Chips we're actually also rated a 3.73 so they tied chocolate 4 second most addicting food group. Right under chips was cookies rated a 3.71. Cookies are not only addicting because of the high amount of sugar but also because they're a comfort food. They're associated with holidays and family. even the act of laying out the cookies on a baking pan and the smell of baking cookies could trigger some serious food addictions. But up next on the list taking 4th Place was ice cream which I personally find even more addicting than cookies. Ice cream was rated a 3.68 with french fries following closely behind at 3.6 french fries don't have sugar but they're crispy because theyre fried in fat which can be very addicting. This was followed by cheeseburgers at 3.51 again I think the cheese has at least something to do with cheeseburgers being so addicting and that was followed up with soda at 3.29 on the addicting scale. Now soda even though it wasn't the most addicting food group selected it is one of the easiest to get in the habit of having all the time. And most people that drink a lot of soda don't realize how many extra calories they're having throughout the day by having Soda instead of water. Now I know you've been told not to have soda before. Everyone knows that if you cut out soda your going to lose a whole bunch of weight just by switching from soda to water. However what if I told you that you don't even want the soda. The reason why you crave soda is because youre addicted to the sugar you get from that can of soda. 1 can of Coca-Cola has a little under 10 teaspoons of sugar. Certain Studies have revealed that Sugar can be more addicting to mice then cocaine and the amount of sugar that you get from one can of Coke can't be matched by almost anything that you find in nature. So your brain will literally get hooked on the sugar in the soda and all you have to do is break that habit and you won't even crave it anymore. I challenge you to try not to drink soda for 30 days and I promise you you won't even want anymore and if you do drink soda you're going to be a lot lighter at the end of those 30 days. Anyway moving on number 9 most addicting was cake and it's easy to see why cake is so addicting usually has multiple addicting ingredients including chocolate and lots and lots of sugar. Then number 10 was cheese rated at a 3.22. Followed by bacon at 3.03 and fried chicken at 2.97. again theres lots of fat in bacon and Fried Chicken Plus they're both crispy so it makes a lot of sense that a lot of people find these two very addicting.

Watch out for diets that are asking you to cut out all 3 major food groups: Dairy, Grain, and Fruits and Vegetables. By cutting out these food groups you are going to be missing out on essential nutrients that we all need to keep our bodies running in tip-top condition. In addition to all that you will also be missing out on crucial vitamin intake and run the risk of overdoing it when it comes to fats. Fiber is a key component in helping you feel fuller, longer. In other words fiber is great for people that are dieting, and don’t even think about giving up carbs. When you workout you burn calories and that in turn builds muscle. Instead of giving the axe to all carbs straight across the board just try to focus on the slow burning ones. Swap your refined grains for whole grains, fruit juice for fresh or frozen fruit, and opt for low fat milk instead of cream in your coffee. The second tip Abbey has to help you diet smarter this year is to modify your workout. While it would seem to make sense that more cardio for an extended duration would burn more calories and result in more weight loss research has actually shown that this type of workout has the potential to not just burn calories, but burn muscle as well and over time. That will have the undesirable effect of decreasing your metabolism. A fast metabolism is a necessity when burning calories, even when you aren’t exercising you’re burning calories. In fact, you actually burn calories while you’re sleeping. Abbey isn’t saying to give up cardio, just to mix in some strength training exercises and do the cardio in bursts. Cardio can be extremely beneficial when done correctly, without question. Abbey’s next dieting tip to get you to your weight loss goal this year is to avoid any diet that tells you to limit your calorie intake to an absurdly low level, such as 1,000 calories a day. This approach to dieting will always backfire in the long run. By taking is so little food and starving your body of the nutrients it actually needs you will once again be running the risk of decreasing your metabolism as this approach is not going to result in muscle gain. Instead of starving yourself focus on portion control and balance. Keep your meals well balanced with proper portions from each food group. Stick with lean meats, fresh vegetables, whole grains, and fresh or frozen fruit. The best way to get ahead with this approach is to make the vegetables the star of the show. Abbey also debunks the myth of low carb dieting once and for all. Extreme Diet Debbie starts off the video proclaiming the potatoes are making you sick, fat, and ugly. She goes on to say that you need to cut those "carb bombs" out of your life for good. Debbie claims she's been doing research on Google and found that the key to a healthy life and a hot body is to stay the hell away from those potatoes. Abbey asks Debbie if she's familiar with the term "Everything in Moderation". Debbie comes right back at Abbey full force telling her that moderation is for the weak and it's all or bust if you want to get lean. Debbie goes on about how important it is to cut those starchy potatoes out of your life for good. Abbey points out 5 key things about potatoes that make them a useful and valuable part of your diet. Debbie's first major claim against potatoes is that they make you gain weight and spike your blood sugar because they are loaded with carbs. Abbey comes right back at Debbie reminding her that they have talked about this issue before. Carbs do not make you fat and cutting them out of your life completely are not necessarily going to make you skinny. It is a fact that your brain needs carbs in order to function optimally. Research has shown that low carb diets are no more successful at helping you lose weight than high carb diets, the same is true for low versus high glycemic index diets. Research has also shown that diets in general often do not lead to weight loss. There is no strong evidence whatsoever linking potatoes to obesity, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes. Abbey recommends enjoying your potatoes in moderation, roughly one cup per serving. Pair your potatoes with lean protein and fiber rich vegetables and you will have a well balanced meal that will keep your body running the way it was intended to. Debbie's second claim is that by peeling potatoes you lose out on all the nutrients. Potatoes are actually an excellent source of Vitamin C, have more potassium than a banana, and contain B6, iron, and magnesium. They are also full of high quality carbohydrates. The only thing you sacrifice when you peel a potato is 1 single gram of fiber as opposed to the 2 grams it would normally have with the peel on it. Debbie moves on with her tirade claiming that sweet potatoes are good and white potatoes are bad. Compared side by side and measured per 100 grams they both have 90 calories, are high in Vitamin C, potassium, iron and magnesium. Sweet potatoes are however higher in fiber as well as Vitamin A. This sort of black and white thinking regarding food is something Abbey has been fighting against for years. There is no good food or bad food, it's all just food. It is how you choose to consume your food that will make the difference in the way it effects your body. Debbie moves on to launch a full scale attack on frozen french fries claiming they are made with additives, preservatives and strange ingredients she can't even pronounce. To prove her point Abbey grabs a bad of McCain Superfries and reads off the ingredients. They consist of potatoes, canola oil, sea salt, sodium phosphate, and color. All french fries are not created equal but as long as you are taking a peek at the ingredients there is no reason you shouldn't be able to enjoy french fries from time to time. Again, all things in moderation applies to this scenario as well. Debbie's final rant is that frozen fries are loaded with trans fats, saturated fats, and sodium that causes heart disease. Abbey reminds Debbie not to jump to conclusions pointing out the fries she used for her example are trans fat free, contain just .3 grams of saturated fat per serving, and meet only 4% of your sodium needs for the entire day. In regards to heart health, potatoes are loaded with potassium. Potassium actually works in opposition to sodium to promote a healthier heart, in other words eating potatoes could actually be good for your heart. In this episode of Abbey’s Kitchen, Abbey is joined by Debbie who was also recently inducted into the official mom’s club. One thing Debbie is not happy about since being a mom is the baby weight. Debbie found out from other mom’s that intermittent fasting helped them drop the unwanted baby pounds. Abbey is happy to hear about Debbie being a mom. For a while, the go-to weight loss diet was just restricting calories on a daily basis. But this strategy was difficult to follow and definitely not sustainable. So then IF was discovered. With IF, you are restricting food intake but only on certain days and on other days you would have the freedom to eat and meet energy requirements. Obviously a WAY more flexible approach to dieting. Debbie is on board with a diet like that, and more importantly is looking forward to meltig the fat away. Based on studies, Abbey has found that IF has been associated with a significant DECREASE in body weight, body fat and waist circumference. But whether you can keep the weight off in the long term is a completely other thing. A 2016 review found that individuals tended to lose MORE weight earlier on in the study compared to the final follow up point. And yes, you may lose body fat, but studies have shown that you may also lose lean muscle mass, but with sufficient protein intake and exercise, you MAY be able to prevent that. Debbie is not worried because she loves her protein shakes and loves going to the gym. Debbie also heard that intermittent fasting can treat diabetes. Based on studies intermittent fasting doesn’t cure diabetes but a 2017 review found that the diet may improve blood sugar levels. Debbie heard that intermittent fasting improves memory. Abbey found a 2017 review where weight loss was associated with improvements in cognitive function. However it is unclear whether intermittent fasting does that, or just weight loss in general. Now, Debbie is sure that the diet is for her! Abbey knows how much Debbie’s social life matters to her, and intermittent fasting can make it difficult to eat out with her friends on a weekly basis. Debbie is sure she could coordinate her fasting schedule with her friends. Abbey also wants to warn Debbie of the undesirable side effects of intermittent fasting. . In a 2016 review, a few studies found participants doing IF experienced constipation, feeling cold, headaches, lack of energy, bad temper and lack of concentration. Debbie does not like being hangry. She gets a little reckless. Abbey also notes that when you do eat during intermittent fasting, you may eat more than you really need because of the limited time to eat. Debbie heard that intermittent fasting is heart healthy. The research community has mixed results when it comes to measuring cardiovascular markers. In some studies, IF increased the good cholesterol and ALSO the bad cholesterol in other studies bad cholesterol decreased and good cholesterol stayed the same. The only reason Debbie wants to do this diet is for the weight loss, so she wants to know whether it works. Studies have shown that IF has a significant influence on metabolism, and has shown that there is a less of a reliance on carbohydrates as a fuel source and promotes the breakdown of stored fat. However reducing energy intake too severely can have the opposite effect where your body responds by regaining weight after losing the weight during fasting. Debbie might need to find another way to say peace out to Preggo Debbie and HELLO to Diet Debbie. Abbey believes that the best weight loss approaches usually aren’t summarized in one sentence. It involves listening to your body and not letting anyone but you deciding when and how much you eat. I think a few times, my weight gains were pretty much beyond my control -- surgery, incapacity due to accidents, pregnancy -- but frequently, have been due to some bad habits of mine. I've certainly tried quite a few diets over the decades, and some did work, but had some unpleasant side effects. (The Atkins diet caused a lot of problems when my mother got us to follow it, beginning in the '70s. Pancreatitis was a negative side effect of that one. We all got it right away, and the damage is permanent.) (One good thing was kicking sugar, however -- that was hell! Hardest substance I've ever kicked!) I did that Scarsdale diet and it worked, but was so unpleasant, my spouse at the time begged us to go off it and I agreed. Okay I lost six pounds the first week, but yecch! I followed a low-fat, low calorie diet for five months in late '84 and early '85 -- it was similar to Weight Watchers. It was a long, unpleasant five months, I got very close to my "ideal weight," I looked and felt dreadful, and my immune system started to fail. I was a temporary legal secretary during part of my grad school studies. I hated the work but there was a kitchen with skim milk at this one law firm where I often had longterm assignments, so I did Slimfast. I did lose 14 pounds. The employer and my temp agency were delighted, as I took only a half hour lunch break each day. My large paychecks brought me no happiness whatsoever. Wow, did I hate being a legal secretary! Money isn't everything. The juice diet for weight loss in the JUICING FOR LIFE book worked well for me. Another time, when I was terminally ill here in France, I asked to be placed on a very restricted diet, and lost a lot of weight, also. No glutens, low fat, lots of bland cooked vegetables. Very, very boring, but it did work. I was quite physically active until about 10 years ago. Exercise is good. Now that it's not possible, I have to get myself in better condition so I can at least stand, walk outdoors. At this point, I'm off all medications save for one for the heart and glaucoma eyedrops. This is great! I'm trying to cope with severe pain issues by restricting certain foods (such as the nightshade family) and by using the Kneipp method, which is, essentially, cold water. Asthma, allergies -- things of the past for me. I have quite a few clips up on YouTube and on Dailymotion about French eating habits. It is rare to spot coworkers snacking here. This is generally not a "chips and soda" culture, either. I recommend the documentary, THE DISAPPEARING MALE. It's easy to find online. It covers a variety of health issues and also discusses environmental issues.

Western nutrition experts have tried to explain away the fact that the French have the lowest incidence of heart disease in the world while eating a diet high in saturated fat. This has been called the French Paradox and blamed on red wine consumption or statistical reporting errors. For some reason they refuse to look at the direct correlation between their lifestyle and the low incidence of heart disease and re-think the low fat dogma that clearly isn't working. What if the low incidence of heart disease is BECAUSE they eat saturated fat, organ meat, 3 distinct meals a day and olive oil rather than a high carb diet, polyunsaturated oils like soy, corn, canola, etc.and 5-6 meals/snacks a day? Wouldn't that be a game changer!!

Curtis Ellison, M.D., chief of preventive medicine and epidemiology, Boston University "Reverence for food and drink is a French tradition, where leisurely meals are typical and often contain course after caloric course of high-fat food. And then there are the wines: Champagne, Bordeaux, Beaujolais . . . in France, wine is both the national industry and the national pasttime. So how do experts explain the fact that the French have lower rates of coronary disease—they consume less than half those in the United States, Great Britain and Canada--even as they consume a diet high in saturated fat, smoke more cigarettes than we do, and exercise comparatively less? They call it the French Paradox. In fact, while the French diet contains about as much fat as Northern Europe's, France's rate of heart disease is closer to Mediterranean countries, where the total fat consumption is much lower. And it's becoming clear to medical experts that wine may be the key. City Club speaker R. Curtis Ellison, M.D., has joined with colleagues in France, Great Britain and Canada to examine this phenomenon. Their research points to the regular and relatively moderate consumption of wine as one of the most important factors contributing to the French Paradox. Medical and clinical studies have shown that alcohol lowers the risk of coronary disease, and wine contains hundreds of organic compounds in addition to alcohol that experts believe may play a role in reducing that risk. Dr. Ellison, an international authority on heart disease and diet, has appeared on 60 Minutes as the lead spokesperson for the French Paradox. He is chief of the Evans Section of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology and professor of medicine and public health at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Ellison holds degrees from Davidson College, the Medical University of South Carolina, and Harvard School of Public Health. The tea known as Pu-erh or Yunnan Tuocha has been coveted for over 2000 years for its preventative and curative properties. This special tea originates from the Yunnan Province of China. Pu-erh Tea has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for generations for the removal of toxins from the body, curing dysentery, weight loss, improving eyesight, promoting blood circulation and reviving those who have over indulged in alcohol. Studies have shown that pu-erh tea significantly suppresses fatty acid synthesis (FAS). This means that it can literally block your body from producing more fat. The process of lipogenesis (creation of fat by the liver) is weakened by using this tea. On top of that, the caffeine found in pu-erh triggers your body to secrete the hormones (epinephrine and norepinephrine) which are shown to increase mobilization of stored fatty acids in fat cells. This enables your body to have easier access to use those stored fatty acids as fuel. Lastly, pu-erh has been clinically proven to enhance cellular levels of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) which effectively blocks visceral fat accumulation. HSL is a critical enzyme that “unlocks” fat cells so that their contents can be emptied out. In a French study conducted on Pu-erh tea at the ARMA Medical Research Association, Dr. Tran Dai-Sy and his team found that out of 350 study subjects, 299 subjects successfully achieved weight loss with a regular diet supplemented by a cup of Pu-erh tea per day. The extent of the weight loss was a staggering 5-10 pounds per subject over a span of two months. To achieve best possible results, follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly in addition drink pu-erh tea about an hour after each meal to reduce the amount of fat that is retained and stored from your meal. Recently, researchers have taken interest in Pu-erh tea for its ability to reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure, protect connective tissue, and its ability to attack free radicals within the body. At China`s Kunming Medical College, another study that consisted of 86 patients with unusually high levels of blood cholesterol examined the differences in the treatment of patients with Pu-erh tea verses conventional cholesterol medication. 55 of the patients were given a regimented dose of pu-erh tea three times a day; the other 31 were given a cholesterol lowering drug 3 times a day. At the end of a two month period, the patients drinking the Pu-erh tea showed a 64.29% reduction in blood cholesterol levels in comparison to 66.67% for the group taking the medication. Cholesterol is not the only benefit that pu-erh tea has to offer though. In 2006, a study found that it has anti-aging and anti-cancerous properties by attacking free radicals within the body as well as actively protecting human fibroblast cells (connective tissue) from damage and deterioration The tea`s cultivation can be traced as far back as the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE) and was made from the leaves of da ye or broad leaf tea. The leaves of this variety of old wild tea tree when picked, are taken and put through a process of delicate maturation that ends in the creation of what is called maocha. This maocha, meaning "rough tea", is then taken and put through one of two processes. Either it is immediately pressed into tea cakes where it is then classified as "raw/green pu-erh" or it is put through an artificial aging process for 30 to 40 days where daily the leaves are turned, splashed with water, covered with cloth, and then left to ferment. After this fermenting stage, the tea is then dried and pressed into tea cakes and classified as "cooked/black pu-erh". Traditionally, the tea was always pressed raw and then vaulted for up to 100 years to gain this fermented status. Pu-erh Tea is truly a wonder tonic but one must be careful when shopping for this sought-after tea. There are many knock-offs and fake pu-erh teas out there, and the older the tea, the more expensive it is. When you are looking for a good pu-erh tea make sure that you are dealing with a reputable tea house or seller, make sure that the tea is from the Yunnan province of China, and make sure that the packaging states that the Tea was cultivated from wild da ye or broad leaf tea trees. There are a few side effects associated with the consumption of pu-erh tea and they include interactions related to the caffeine content in the drink. Individuals with anxiety disorders, diabetes, diarrhea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, glaucoma, high blood pressure, heart conditions and bleeding disorders should all avoid consuming pu-erh tea.
