It is used by our bodies to make bile acids, vitamin D and also plays a role in maintaining hormone levels. For our bodies to function properly, it is important that we have healthy levels of cholesterol. When we have high cholesterol levels and more cholesterol in our blood than is needed, this can be problematic, and lead to health complications. High cholesterol levels are especially troublesome since its symptoms are not easily detected, and they will have to be checked by your doctor. Having high cholesterol levels can lead to a number of different ailments, including plaque build up i the arteries, gallstones, heart attacks, heart disease and decreased blood flow and circulation. Fortunately, we can make dietary changed can decrease high cholesterol levels, along with a change in lifestyle and exercise. Lets discuss some foods that can help to decrease cholesterol levels in the body. 1. First, almonds can help to lower cholesterol levels in the body. Not only that, but they work to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol while raising “good” HDL cholesterol and are also a great source of healthy unsaturated fats. As well, almonds work to make LDL cholesterol less likely to oxidize. When it does oxidize, this leads to a clogging of the arteries and restricts blood flow to important organs.Try not to overeat almonds for these benefits. 2. Oatmeal can also be helpful for lowering high cholesterol levels when consumed consistently. Oats are a great source of soluble fibre. This fibre forms a gel when you eat it that helps to prevent the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream. You can also add fibre rich nuts or fruit like apples to increase the fibre levels of this cholesterol friendly food. 3. Olive oil is also beneficial for lowering high cholesterol levels. As we have discussed in previous videos, this oil is great for your overall heart heath. It is packed with antioxidants and monounsaturated fats that will lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol as studies have indicated. As well, olive oil is a great source of phenolics, a plant substance that can help prevent the blood from clotting. 1 or 2 tablespoons of olive oil a day is all you need for these benefits. 4. Blueberries are an incredible superfood that provide many nutrients and health benefits. One of these benefits is that they can help to keep our arteries clear and prevent clogging by reducing LDL cholesterol in the blood. This is because blueberries work to promote and support the overall function of our liver, which can work to eliminate and remove unneeded cholesterol from our bodies. 5. High cholesterol levels can also be decreased if you consume tomatoes on a consistent basis. They contain great amounts of lycopene which may reduce LDL cholesterol levels in the body. Research has indicated that when we consume lycopene-rich foods like tomatoes, it can inhibit overall LDL production, and also help break down this fat so that is does not build up in the arteries. 6. Dairy I’ve been saying this for over 2 decades - Milk is for babies and cow milk is for baby cows! Additionally, 99% of dairy products are pasteurized, which kills any benefits milk could have. Not to mention, the toxins, hormones and drugs these animals are given are highly concentrated in the milk - which goes inside of YOU! Fast Foods It doesn’t matter if it’s a burger, tacos, french fries, pizza or anything else - they’re all high in carbohydrates, hydrogenated and saturated fats, using unhealthy and toxic proteins. It’s cheap food. It may be easy and good for your wallet, but it’s bad for your health and cholesterol levels and you’ll pay the price later in life. Animal Protein The saturated fats and “marble fat” found in meat, pork, poultry and shell-fish is horrible for your health and cholesterol levels. I’ve noticed even grass-fed meat and free-range poultry can still cause high cholesterol in some of my patients, especially the “sensitive” ones. Limit your intake and focus more on vegetable proteins and fish - especially wild-caught salmon. Eggs Eggs can be good or bad. All the cholesterol and fat is located in the egg YOLK, which is why most “experts” say you should only consume egg whites. However, most of the nutrients, antioxidants and half the essential amino acids (protein) are also found in the yolk. The problem is when you COOK the yolk - such as hard-boiled, scrambled and fried eggs. The heat oxidizes the egg and damages both the structure of the protein and fat. So the healthiest way to eat eggs is raw or lightly cooked, so the yolk is still runny. Don’t fry it with butter or vegetable fats. And make sure it’s organic, free-range eggs. Baked Foods/Carbs (Snacks Too) Baked foods such as muffins, cakes, breads, donuts, croissants, rolls, cookies, danishes, scones, pie, etc… The types of foods most people eat in the morning when they’re in a rush, or with their coffee or at work as a snack… These are all bad because they contain hydrogenated and saturated fats, as well as dairy. Not to mention, they’re high in simple carbohydrates and sugars. “Bad” fats increase cholesterol. “Bad” fats + carbs/sugar REALLY increase your cholesterol and lead to numerous health issues. Personally, I categorize an avocado under FATS because one medium size avocado (150 grams) has about1: 240 calories 12 calories (3 grams) from protein 12 calories (3 grams + 9 grams fiber) from carbohydrates 216 of calories (24 grams) being from fat (90% of the calories) Now, the TYPE of fat is the key to avocado’s “cholesterol lowering” secret and I’ll get to that in a minute. As far as clinical proof for improving your cholesterol… One study2 saw a 16% decrease in total cholesterol after only 7 days of a diet high in monounsaturated fat from avocados and a 22% decrease of both the “bad” LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, along with an 11% increase the “good” HDL cholesterol. In a second study3, the participants saw an average drop of 14 points in “bad” LDL cholesterol with a higher avocado diet The “Secret” Heart-Healthy Fat Now, the reason for avocado’s working so well is that 66% of the fat is from monounsaturated fats!1 Most people like olive oil as the main source of monounsaturated fats. However, I don’t because most olive oil is rancid and processed. It’s “fake”. Most of the healthier, “extra virgin oils” break down at a lower heat temperature and thus, it’s best kept UNCOOKED and eaten raw. My favorite monounsaturated fat to cook with is macadamia oil because it’s not processed very much and also has a high heat capacity, so it’s great for cooking.4 Summary So if you want a healthier heart and lower your cholesterol, decrease your sugars and increase healthy monounsaturated fats from my favorite heart-healthy fruit, an avocado! ========================================­ Thank you for watching. Oats: Having a bowl of oatmeal or oat-based cereal for breakfast is an easy first step to improving your cholesterol. It provides you with 1g to 2g of soluble fiber and an extra 0.5g each if you add a banana or some strawberries. The daily recommendation for fiber is 20 to 30 grams with 5 to 10 grams obtained from soluble fiber. 2. Barley and other whole grains: These assist in lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases, just like oats and oat bran, mostly through their supply of soluble fiber. 3. Nuts: Nuts are rich in fiber, vegetable protein, healthy fats, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, natural plant sterols and many other plant nutrients that are beneficial. Taking about 30-35g of nuts daily could lower cholesterol by up to 5%. 4. Beans and Other Legumes: Beans, lentils, peas and peanuts are also super sources of soluble fiber. According to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition (November 2007), it was discovered that eating half a cup of cooked dried pinto beans (2 grams of soluble fiber) every day for 12 weeks consistently decreased LDL cholesterol by almost 7%. 5. Soy: Soy is another super food that is high in fiber, low in saturated fat and free of cholesterol. It is the only complete plant-based protein, which implies that it’s an equal swap for animal sources like meat and dairy. Substituting foods that are high in saturated fat with daily Soy intake has the ability to lower LDL cholesterol by almost 8 to 10% - according to a study published in The Journal of Nutrition (2010). 6. Vegetable oils: Another way to reduce cholesterol is by cooking with liquid vegetable oils such as sunflower, canola, safflower and others instead of butter or lard. 7. Citrus fruits, Grapes, Apples and Strawberries: These fruits are very rich in pectin, a type of soluble fiber that helps lower LDL. 8. Eating fish two or three times a week can lower LDL in two ways: by replacing meat, which has LDL-boosting saturated fats, and by delivering LDL-lowering omega-3 fats. Omega-3s reduce triglycerides in the bloodstream and also protect the heart by helping prevent the onset of abnormal heart rhythms. make sure you know which fish are high in mercury. 2. Red Onions Red Onions are the unsung heroes of cardiovascular health. Thanks to their bioactive sulfur-containing compounds, the culinary staple can help lower cholesterol, ward off hardening of the arteries, and help maintain healthy blood pressure levels. If you have high cholesterol or are at risk of developing it, there are foods you will want to avoid so that you can maintain healthy cholesterol levels and improve your overall cardiovascular health. Not only will avoiding these high cholesterol foods help lower your cholesterol levels, but they can also help to reduce inflammation that can reduce the risk of heart disease and also help with weight loss. Now, lets discuss some foods you will want to avoid if you have high cholesterol or want to limit your chances of developing it. 1. First, processed meats such as deli meats and bacon should be avoided for high cholesterol. There have been a number of studies that have shown that processed meats have been associated with elevated cholesterol levels, as well as an increase in cardiovascular disease. Processed meats such as bacon, sausage and hot dogs should all be avoided if you want to reduce your risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol levels. To make matters worse, these processed meats are often high in saturated and trans fats, as well as sodium, which can be a major detriment to your cholesterol levels and overall heart health. 2. You will want to avoid processed vegetable oils as well as they can increase your cholesterol levels. Hydrogenated oils can be especially bad for your cholesterol levels since they contain high levels of trans fats. Many studies have shown that these trans fats increase “bad” LDL cholesterol levels while also lowering “good” HDL cholesterol. Other oils that you may want to avoid when it comes to cholesterol is corn oil and vegetable oil, as these oils can also raise both total and LDL cholesterol levels. 3. Almost everyone enjoyed cookies and other baked goods. However, these high sugar products can wreak havoc on your overall cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels and should be avoided if you want to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Research shows that sugar and added sugars are associated with increased “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the body. Not only that, but these sugars will lower the “good” HDL cholesterol in your body as well. Baked goods aren’t the only high sugar foods you will want to avoid for high cholesterol, but sweetened drinks such as soda and fruit juices can also lead to undesired cholesterol levels, as well as increase inflammation and the risk of heart disease. 4. Surprising to some, but refined grain products and other refined carbohydrates can also have negative consequences on cholesterol and should be avoided as best you can. Foods such as bagels, white pasta and white bread can all negatively effect your “bad” LDL cholesterol levels. As studies have shown, these refined grains and carbohydrates have a high glycemic index rating, which can significantly raise your cholesterol levels and risk for heart disease. 5. Lastly, if you want to reduce your risk of high cholesterol or if you have high cholesterol currently, you will want to avoid high fat dairy products. High fat milk and dairy products contain fatty acids, and many of these products can have a negative impact on your cholesterol. The saturated and trans fats found in these dairy products can increase total plasma cholesterol levels, especially “bad” LDL cholesterol. As well, you will want to avoid these dairy products as they will not only increase cholesterol levels, but also increase your risk of heart disease, inflammation and weight gain.
