How to Build a Raised Deck with Wickes

17:05
A partly or fully raised deck can be a great addition to any garden, especially if the ground is sloping or uneven. Learn how to build a raised deck with this step by step guide from our Wickes experts. Subscribe to the Wickes YouTube channel here: http://po.st/YijIE1 For more Wickes garden and landscaping videos click here: http://po.st/jAXyHE Planning The key to a successful deck is in the planning. Avoid very wet areas completely and if the deck is in a shady area be prepared to treat and clean the wood annually. Draw your deck to scale on paper as accurately as you can, remember it's the deck boarding that governs the size of the deck. You should also bear in mind that any deck over 300mm off the ground will require planning permission. Corner Posts When digging the holes for your corner posts be sure to look out for any cables or pipes as you go. Once the soil is removed you should be left with a 300mm x 300mm square to a depth of 700mm for each post. Make sure you add a section of concrete block to each hole before adding in the post and Postcrete. Outer Frame If your deck is on a slope, start with corner where the deck is highest off the ground and mark on the post where the highest part of the frame will be. To ensure rain water runs off your deck, and away from the house, allow for a slight fall in the level of the deck frame by factoring in a fall of 2mm for every metre. Centre post and Support Joists Your support joists should run in the same direction as your deck boards. Sandwich the centre post between two support joists before securing with Postcrete. Trim your post by using a setsquare and a handsaw making sure you treat the cut ends as you go. When laying your landscape fabric it's best to overlap the fabric to ensure it covers all of the area under your deck. Steps Your steps should be supported on solid and level ground. When building your stairs you will also need to make sure they are flush with both the top and side of your frame. When securing your deck boards to the steps, always secure the front faces of the steps first. Deck Boards When securing deck boards we'd recommend drilling all fixing points with a 2mm bit to prevent them from splitting, also, if you countersink all drilled fixing points you will get a smoother finish. Keep spaces even between adjacent boards by using a spacer from an off cut of timber (we'd recommend a gap of 5-8mm to allow the timber to expand and contract). Fascia Boards Start by attaching all the boards that do not need to be cut down, with 64mm screws. If you are adding an angled board because the decking is being built on a slope you will need to add packers to the deck frame. Remember to also leave a gap of at least 5mm between the board and the ground as you do not want it touching the ground at any point. DIY Building a Ground Level Deck: 2 Year Follow-Up!

03:42
DIY Easy Deck Building Project 2-YR Follow-up. This is an easy DIY deck, also known as a Floating Deck (https://goo.gl/NXGiVX). For a deck this size, its an easy weekend project, but can be finished in one day with enough people helping out! Save money and build it yourself! Check out Below for Helpful Links and More Videos! To start the deck build project, you must first decide what area your deck will be built in, deck size, deck shape, deck color or material used, how it will attach to the house (if at all), what the foundation will be made of (ground spikes, patio blocks, landscaping bricks), if an underlining material liner or a filler material like gravel will be used, any water drainage needs, and if you will need or require rails, benches, or stairs. Don't miss the Step-by-Step Time-lapse Video of us Building the Ground Level Deck in one day! Check the Video out here: https://youtu.be/1lzWTVnwcTs?list=PLzFUxuBF07AZK4hYwWDyqmtlMU5rWIzEn Once the planning phase has been completed, check your local Hardware Store, like Home Depot or Lowe's for assistance with final deck design and structural needs, as well as a materials list for the entire build. Most Home Improvement Stores will have a Kiosk where you can plan, customize, and get a schematic with materials list without much effort. After getting your full materials list, speak with an associate on having your heavy materials, like deck planking boards, delivered to your home. If using a filler material like we did (small grade gravel), also consider having that delivered as well. We demonstrated the steps needed from building the basic frame from 2x6 treated Framing boards on strategically placed patio blocks for leveling, bracing the main frame on the inside, laying the gravel in a grade away from the house for water, as well as preventing under-growth from coming up, and finally laying down your deck planking, made from wood or composite. This is the most time consuming part of the process, and most tedious, as each board needs to be carefully spaced (https://goo.gl/SnAWUc), screwed down in numerous spots along the length, and then finally cut to length, matching the other deck planks. Having reliable power tools will make this project much easier, many times over. Must Have's are a Large Level (https://goo.gl/qXDzTh), a Corded Power Drill (https://goo.gl/OiMuHd), a reliable Circular Saw (https://goo.gl/nQH1yJ), as well as good Building Materials, like long-lasting Deck Screws (https://goo.gl/jgFBPN), and follow-up deck treatment products, like a good Wood Deck Cleaner (https://goo.gl/juk20E), and sealing Deck Protector (https://goo.gl/u7gkPw). Once the build is complete, utilize the space with common deck accessories, like a good water-proof patio set (https://goo.gl/XpKtLx), an above-ground fire pit (https://goo.gl/5d8i69), quality grill or barbecue, as well as Privacy Screen Fences (https://goo.gl/0W3VHb), and waterproof LED Light Strips (https://goo.gl/ypJdiT) can create relaxing ambiance or a fun party environment! If you have a pre-existing flat and dry surface, and want a simpler, cheaper, and quicker way of providing the finished look to your outdoor (or indoor) space, check out these alternative all-natural wood inter-locking Tiles (https://goo.gl/uwO2bf). The DIY Wood Tiles come in various colors, designs, and weather resistance. They are budget friendly, look amazing when installed correctly, and provide a similar feeling to the deck in or outside! At a fraction of the cost to a traditional deck, having fast and simple installation, they are an option which should be considered when planning any deck build! If I had a dollar for every time I came across a wooden deck that was built to close to the ground, I would probably have enough money, for a nice steak dinner. Anyway, this video will provide you with a few things to think about before you build a wood deck near ground level or on top of your soil or landscaping. Ventilation is important and you must have some type of access to remove any debris that can accumulate or cause damage, under your wood deck. If you are building you decking on a lawn then you might want to lay paving slabs on a bed of gravel first to avoid your deck from sinking over time. A weed proof membrane is a good idea, you don't want your decking designs ruined by weeds that will surely come. At this point be sure to treat the timber you are going to use and make sure you buy the right type of screw, don't cut costs, we want to do this job right. Create Your Basic Decking Designs STEP 1: Lay out the main frame and butt join at the corners. Be sure to fix the structure with 150 mm (6 inches) outdoor use screws from the outside of the frame. To keep the corners of the frame at a perfect right angle (we are assuming your decking designs will be a simple perfect square) use a batten brace fixed with screws (a piece of wood you place across the corners to make a triangle shape ) Use the proportions of 3:4:5, i.e. if one side of the triangle is 30 cm, the other straight side will be 40cm and the main slant of the triangle will be 50cms. STEP 2: Start marking points where you will put the struts that will run horizontally across the square shape of your decking designs. Next attach these struts with our trusty 150mm (6-inches) screws to the outside of the frame. Prepare your Decking Designs STEP 3: Mark where your decking design will sit then put it aside for a moment. Strip the soil where you are going to place your decking designs and put a paving slab at each corner and on the main pressure points where the deck is going to sit. So for a square design you will most likely end up with a 9 paving slab grid. With these in place take away the paving slabs one by one and remove 25mm (1-inches) of topsoil from beneath he paving slab. Replace this earth with gravel and level out. Repeat for all your paving slabs. STEP 4: At this point in the process you want to take out your trusty Spirit level and place it across two of the slabs, ideally buy one that is long enough or place a piece of flat wood beneath it. If your slabs are not even, then remove more soil as desired and add more gravel. We want our decking designs to be perfectly even when set. Once all your slabs are even cover the area in weed proof membrane and cut out squares where the paving slabs are, trim and tidy then cover the membrane itself with gravel, removing any gravel that might spill over your paving slabs. Complete Your Decking Designs STEP 5:Now it's time to put back the decking frame and start adding the boards. For decking designs set against a house wall, like for a patio or porch, start furthest away from this wall. Position your first board along the deck's edge, making sure it is flush with the framework's edge. Next its time to fix the deck using two decking screws 10mm (2-inches) in from the board edge. Once the first board is in place add the next. Be sure to use either a screw or a piece of small wood off cuts to leave a small gap between the boards. The gap can be to your liking, one recommendation is around 2-10 mm (about quarter of an inch). Continue placing the boards one after another.

How to Build a Deck, Part 5: Building Deck Stairs and Steps

04:14
The frame of your deck is set, so now it is time to figure out your stair dimensions and build a solid set of steps. Getting started it is important to have a stair layout. There is also going to be some simple math involved as you figure out the rise (vertical distance of the step) vs. run (horizontal distance of the steps) of the stairs. A typical run is 9''-12'' while a rise is about 7''. The general rule of thumb is to have the rise and run = 17 ½''. To start you will need a level, a framing square and a tape measure. Start by determining how high your rise will be. Use a level and a tape measure and measure the rise and run from the deck. A common height is 34''. Divide that by 7'' which is the typical rise of a step and round to the nearest whole number to get the number of risers. Divide 34'' by 5 steps to get the actual height of those stairs which in this example is 6 7/8''. Marking and cutting the stringer will set the base for your stairs. We will need square gauges, 2'x12' planks, 5"/4" decking, saw horses, a circular saw and hand saw. Set the gauges on the framing square on the height of the rise and the length of the run, hold the square at the corner of the plank and mark the top step. Slide the square along the plank and mark the next step. Continue marking. At the top step hold the square under the mark and strike a perpendicular line. This is where the stairs attach to the deck. At the bottom step hold a piece of your treat where the stairs will rest on the ground. Mark this line. Cut the stringer, then use the cut stringer as template to mark the other planks. It's now time to assemble the stairs and you will need brackets, drill with bits, socket wrench and sockets, carriage bolts, washers and nuts, 3lb. hammer, screws and nails. Mark where you are going to attach your stairs according to your building codes. Secure the stringer to the deck flush with the joist and attach with a bracket. Cut the toe kicks and treads at once to save time. Attach all the toe kicks with screws and the treads leaving a drainage space similar to the decking. Now that the stairs are finished, there are just a few more steps before the deck is complete. How to Build a Deck Around an Above Ground Pool

08:37
Planning your deck around an above ground pool is very simple as long as you know the picture of your dream deck and you have the adequate materials to build it. Here we provide you the simple steps to build above ground pools with decks. Step 1: Framing the Floor Start by having 2 x 6s to create 17 symmetrical frames. The last frame (18th) will be created to fit right the others are done being set around the pool. Apply galvanized metal corner brackets to speed up the job by attaching the four perimeter boards. Step 2: Setting Piers and Posts Start by placing the first pair of blocks onto the ground beside your pool. Position the first pier block so its center is 12 inch (from your pool wall). Next up, position the second pier further away from your pool with its center 18 inches (from the center of the first). Stand two 4×4 posts in the square sockets combined into piers. Next, up, eliminate the posts and size them down from each of lines a distance equal to the thickness of your pool. Mark at this location on each position and cut them to length. Put the posts back and make sure they are in original positions. Repeat this procedure for the next pair of piers and posts. After installing the 17 frames, measure and cut the last one to fit the remaining space. Finish the pool-deck frame by screwing 2 x 4 diagonal braces to the 4 x 4 posts. Step 3: Laying the Decking Start by cutting several 2x6s into 4 feet lengths with an end of each cut at 80o. Slip the angled end of the first decking board under the pool’s coping, making it a ½ inch. Away from your pool wall. Set the long edge of the deck board in between two adjoining floor joist frames. Buttoned up the board to the joists with deck screws. Continue installing deck boards with this accordance. Once all the deck boards are buttoned up, get the circular saw trimmed off the overhanging ends, so they are swill out with the perimeter joists. Next thing to do is move on the sun deck and start buttoning up the 2×6 deck boards. Then snap a chalk line and trim the boards flush with joists. Step 4: Building the Guardrails Start by purchasing precut railing posts for $6 to save a lot of time. Note this that the tops require the 4×4 pressure treated posts with decorative chamfer and V groove meanwhile the bottom end requires a precut notch that positions on top of the decking. Apply them at every joint. Build the stairs that lead from the sun deck down to the ground as the final construction. Subscribe https://goo.gl/rfVKr2 https://plus.google.com/u/0/115686769139655177371

I’d recommend using a miter saw. Remove hardware from the cooler. Assemble the legs. I used a Kreg Jig to drill 4 pocket holes in one board for each leg. Then connect using wood glue and 2 1/2 inch Kreg screws. Assemble the frame for the cooler out of 2×4 boards. Connect each 2×4 with 2 1/2 inch screws. You can make it as snug as you’d like. I left about a half inch of play on each side to make it easy to remove the cooler if needed. Use the cooler as a template or measure the cooler to determine how long to cut these boards. Attach the 4 corners to the top frame. Use 2 1/2 inch wood screws and put about 4 for each corner. Drill a pilot hole before putting the screws in so the wood doesn’t split. Add the apron. Rip fence boards on a table saw and then glue and nail them to the top as shown in the photo. This will create about a half inch overhang on each side. I cut the apron to 3 1/2 inches wide. Create the cooler support out of 2×4’s Place the frame upside down on a flat surface and slide the cooler in place. Next, put the support at the base of the cooler and attach to the legs using screws and pocket holes. If you don’t have a kreg jig, you could pre-drill and then run screws in at an angle. Add fence pickets around all sides to hide the cooler. I started by attaching a board in the middle of the sections and then moved to the left and right. Use as many full width fence boards as you can. Rip the outer boards on a table saw to get a perfect fit. I’d recommend spacing the boards roughly 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch from each other. Add trim horizontally on each side. Rip fence boards into 2 inch strips and then glue and nail the trim in place. Place the cooler in the frame and then mark where the hole will go through the side of the wood surround. Then drill a small hole through the wood from the inside. Next, use a larger bit or hole saw from the outside to finish the full sized hole. This is where the piping will go through. Determine the height and width of your cooler lid. Mine was a little less than 2 inches high and so I ripped a couple 2×4 boards to make them 2 inches tall. Then place the boards around the perimeter and cut to size. The lid should be snug with the wood. Attach the plastic cooler lid to the wood using 2 inch screws. Pre-drill and then put in the screw. Make sure the outer part of the lid is flush with the wood. The inner part will protrude from the wood because it is what will allow the cooler to stay in place when the lid goes down. The inner portion will seal the cooler. Cut 4 fence boards down to size and rip them each to the same width on the table saw. Leave about an 1/8 of an inch between each. Use glue and an air nailer to keep them in place. ---- Looking for more DIY videos? Be sure to check out our channel and subscribe for updates! We post a weekly tutorial every Thursday.
