1st Grade Writing Lesson

02:16
Imagine instead of starting with minimal vocabulary basal readers, first, second and third grade students are able to read such books as Where the Wild Things Are, The Velveteen Rabbit and Charlotte's Web, respectively. Imagine all students, whatever their socio-economic group, ethnicity or native language (even those at Title 1 schools or those in ESL/ELL programs), all succeeding in learning how to spell, write and read. Imagine a recently completed four-year study by Arizona State University showing one group of students — using a particular method to learn how to spell, write and read — having significantly higher achievement test scores when compared to those using other reading programs. And imagine a method where every parent and teacher can help children develop essential critical thinking skills and instill a love of learning and reading that will last a lifetime It's called "The Writing Road to Reading©," an integrated, multisensory, research-based, language arts curriculum using the principles of instruction in The Spalding Method®. Training in "The Writing Road to Reading" curriculum is offered exclusively through Spalding Education International (SEI). SEI's mission is to increase literacy for all children and adults by using The Spalding Method to develop skilled readers, critical listeners, and accomplished writers and spellers. The late Romalda B. Spalding, author of "The Writing Road to Reading," founded the organization in 1986. Guided Reading in a 3rd Grade Classroom

07:16
: Small group instruction and guided reading are critical components of the reading block. Guided reading, as defined by Fountas and Pinnell, is a teaching approach designed to help individual students learn how to process a variety of increasingly challenging texts with understanding and fluency. Small groups are made up of students with similar instructional reading levels and learning needs. Through guided reading, students learn how to develop and use strategies to construct meaning from text. Teachers pull small groups for guided reading while other students are engaged in Daily 5 activities or other valuable literacy work. Small group guided reading lessons should be carefully planned in advance of the lesson. In this video, the teacher will work with a small group of 3rd grade students.

First Grade Math Lesson Plans

02:22
First grade math lessons may sound so easy to prepare for anybody. However, it is important that the learning experience of the child be guided. It is important that first grade math lesson plans be prepared in relation to the learning capability of the child. It is necessary that you get hold of a copy of the curriculum of your school for the current school year so you’ll know what topics are being covered. Here are a few tips when preparing a first grade math lesson plan: 1. Find out what type of learners are the students? Visual learners are keen to visual aides and anything they see so you may have to prepare some flash cards, videos, worksheets. 2. Find out what interests most of your students. Develop a rapport with them and remove the barrier between the student and the teacher. This will allow your student to interact more closely to you and with the others. It will be easier for you to prepare your first grade math lesson plans when you know things about your students such as their hobbies, favorite pet, and friends as you can create activities which may be interesting to them. 3. Connect the topics to their experiences. When making first grade math lesson plans, it will be good to show its importance to their life experiences. Take counting as an example. Prepare an activity where they have to count using coins and bills. The objective of this activity is to be able to count the correct change. Allow the students to share their experience when buying something from the grocery store, perhaps when they are asked to do an errand or when they want to buy their favorite chocolate. Ask them how much the item costs and how much they paid the cashier. Did they get any change? How much? 4. Create short topics with more activities. First grade math lesson plans should be full of activities for the children to enjoy the topics and discussions. Consider first grade math lesson plans as the initial stage in a person’s learning journey. You are there to prepare the child, assuring him of a good education. Give them the best, by preparing well to teach math lessons. And remember that math lessons are lessons of life in numbers.
