In this video Matt Oechsli, President of The Oechsli Institute, gives five tips on how financial advisors can build a proven marketing plan designed to attract affluent clients. Are you focused on bringing in clients with $1 million or more in investable assets? Are you focused on small business owners? Professionals? Are you dealing with C-suite executives? Your starting point is to identify your ideal client profile. Tip #2: Match Your Ideal Client Profile to Our Affluent Research It's important that you understand what type of marketing the affluent respond to. Where are their eyes and ears? Our affluent research is very clear, there are five high-impact marketing activities today's affluent respond favorably to: 1. Personal Introductions 2. Referral Alliance Partners 3. Socializing and Networking 4. Word-of-Mouth Influence 5. Intimate Client Events Tip 3#: Take Inventory of Your Affluent Clients and Referral Alliance Partners Each of your affluent clients have seven spheres of influence. Within these spheres of influence are your personal introductions. The seven spheres are: 1. Family 2. Neighbors 3. Colleagues 4. Organizations 5. Recreation 6. Professionals 7. Friends Your goal is to uncover prospects through each of these seven spheres. Not all of them are going to be ideal prospects, but you will find your fair share. You also need to assess the CPAs and attorneys you are targeting to and make certain their clients fit your ideal client profile as well. Tip #4: Create Your Relationship Management and Relationship Marketing Calendar Next, plan the social interactions you will be having with clients and referral alliance partners. Plan the social events you will be attending and determine the intimate events you will be hosting. We recommend at least bi-monthly intimate events. The idea is to put structure around your relationship management and relationship marketing plan. Tip #5: Create a Budget So, you have a great relationship management and relationship marketing plan - let's put some dollars behind it. Our research tells us that elite advisors spend four percent or more of their total revenue on their relationship management and relationship marketing budget. This is an investment in your practice. You are schmoozing your clients and at the same time, marketing for new clients. Now you have a great plan, designed for a financial advisors, but the best plan is worthless without execution. Major Issues In The Financial Advisor Industry
www.cwanetwork.com Financial Advisor? Love helping clients? We do too. Unfortunately, things get in the way. While other industries have been pumping out technology for years, we’ve been trying to keep up. Today, Fintech is growing at a frightening pace. There are industry disruptors, like robo-advisors, new software, and strategic partnerships that can change the game entirely. It’s nearly impossible to stay current. Financial planning is great as a career, until you realize there’s more to practice management than seeing clients. There’s managing client relationships, having a planning process, compliance and licensing, continuing education, technology, marketing, finances, administrative duties - and the list goes on. None of us were trained for all of those things. Then there are the regulators—they focus on investments, when they ought to be separating those who are planning from those who are selling. There’s so much more to financial planning than investments - estate and survivorship planning, beneficiaries, titling, Required Minimum Distributions, income taxes, disability and long term care, debt management, business planning and the list goes on and on. A client’s financial situation cannot be planned in silos...each area integrates with the others. Now, think about this… The most recognized industry designation, the Certified Financial Planner or CFP, defines their planning process in six steps. We love their training, and the process. BUT, the first step of the process says clients and advisors should “define the relationship.” That’s a real issue for us, because clients don’t know what they don’t know. How could they begin to define the relationship? Add to that, there are over 150 designations and job titles in our industry. Other professions have one: Doctor-Attorney-CPA. How would a consumer know the difference from one to another? Our industry has little self-regulation but it doesn’t serve the consumer. Investment-focused advisors are not serving the consumer. Financial companies serve stockholders, not consumers. Regulators are missing the mark and that doesn’t serve the consumer. Who is going to serve the client? Let’s face it, the industry needs to change. It’s time consumers and regulators better understood our industry. It’s time for like-minded advisors to band together and challenge the norm. Be the industry’s advocate. Be the change the industry needs. Be the advisor that takes a holistic view of the consumer’s financial situation. But, you already know that, don’t you? You’re providing comprehensive planning or you want to start. We also know you need help. You need to deliver more value, if you want to grow your practice. That’s where we come in. How To Project Startup Revenues & Expenses (Financial Projections) in a Business Plan
As a full-time business plan writer, one of the questions I get asked commonly is how do I project revenues and expenses when the business is not established yet and there is no data. The truth is, there's always data. It may not be data from the business that is looking to protect their financial statements, but there is data from comparables. This is why the market research and Industry analysis section of the business plan is so important. The market research and Industry analysis section of the business plan creates a basis of assumption for projecting the financial statements. The market research allows you to find data on population growth, income statistics, racial demographics and more. The industry analysis allows you to grab data on your industry and competitors. This includes information such as common industry profit margins, industry wages and more. By looking at this data, you can form an educated guess, also called an assumption, which allows you to project your revenues and expenses. For example, if you are opening up a restaurant, the market research may show data for how many people come into the plaza where you will lease space. The industry analysis will show you food cost and what is commonly going on in the industry. All of this information is used as the basis for your marketing plan and financial projections. When you are an established business, you simply look back at your data. For example, if you have been operating a restaurant for the last three years, then you can look at how much money was made, what was the busy season, what was the most popular selling plate, and more. These will form strong assumptions to project your revenues and expenses next year. You will begin to see a pattern in regards to how much money you're spending on marketing, or where you are marketing, and how much revenue is being made. This should end up being a mathematical formula. For example, the restaurant owners spent 10000 + marketing a year and made $100,000, and then another year they spent $20,000 on marketing a year and made $200,000, and so on. Now business doesn't run this smoothly and this linearly, but there will be something that stands out in the data that allows you to mathematically equate and investment in marketing to revenue.
