57 - How to Build a Custom Charging Station for Electronics (Part 1 of 12)

14:33
Original post on our site with additional information, plans, questions & comments: http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/episode-57-gadget-station-pt-1/ Time to embark on our next project: a Gadget Station. Most people have tons of gadgets laying around the house these days, and they all need to be charged. So my goal is to create a wall hanging cabinet that houses the electronics in a safe and organized fashion. An interesting point of interest with this project is that the recipient is the one and only, Leo Laporte (The Tech Guy). The Wood Whisperer is education and entertainment for the modern woodworker! 11:03
Original post on our site with additional information, plans, questions & comments: http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/episode-58-gadget-station-pt-2/ For the first time ever, I am using mail-ordered wood. This material came from Bell Forest Products and I was very impressed with the quality. The shipment came in two packs and contained some really nice wide bubinga boards, as well as a piece ebony for the trim and some spalted maple for the doors. I sticker and stack the wood and talk about acclimation, and how it pertains to this particular situation. I talk a little bit about moisture meters as well and finish up by showing my strategy for cutting the cabinet parts out of the rough lumber so that the grain flows nicely. Original post on our site with additional information, plans, questions & comments: http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/episode-62-gadget-station-pt-5/ Road Trip! I was originally convinced that the Gadget Station would call for knife hinges. But just for fun I decided to take a trip to my local Woodcraft to see what they might suggest. Well, surprise surprise! I discovered a hinge that I had never noticed before. The Soss Invisible Hinge. I actually like this hinge better and I think it will suit this application perfectly. I hope you enjoy this little review of common hinges with our friend Frank Galloway, at the Chandler, AZ Woodcraft Store. The Wood Whisperer is education and entertainment for the modern woodworker! 3/24/2015 -- WIRELESS POWER using MICROWAVES -- Japan moving forward on new plans

08:18
Another huge developing technology story regarding microwaves and next generation applied uses of frequency. Japan has announced they are moving forward with a microwave wireless power system. Full website post with links and more information on wireless power, specs + diagrams of the components, and how to build one yourself. All links shown in the video are contained here: http://dutchsinse.com/3232015-japan-moves-forward-on-wireless-power-using-microwaves-sps-coming-soon/ See the Boeing force field using microwaves here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjJlt_0I-KY _____ The system has now been tested in the Laboratory to ensure that it works, the next step is to build a space based version which beams microwaves back to Earth, which are then converted to DC power ! This link contains a full description plus basic diagrams to build your own version. Of course there are possibly VERY HIGH VOLTAGE conditions, so if you build one, be extremely careful, and know what you're doing before beginning assembly. _____ Earlier today, breaking news was announced in regards to another use of Microwaves. Boeing aircraft company has patented MICROWAVE force fields which reflect / stop incoming shockwaves from explosions. Literally a plasma shield which will stop a blast from a bomb. The plasma is generated using microwaves from two transmitters. ______ The use of the 2GHz band, and now the use of the 5GHz band shows that professionals already know the potential for electrical conversion is there. Per the US FCC rules, the average exposure to microwaves contains about 61 volts per sq. meter. Meaning the potential voltage available MUST be somewhere near (or above) 61 volts every 3 sq. feet. already around us currently. This does not count the FM, AM, Shortwave, High frequency, VHF,and other UHF signals already coming in to our houses from every source imaginable. If you had a series of different sized antennas, you could theoretically "listen" to multiple bands, and convert all the bands power into DC.. not just microwaves. The great thing about building your own system, is that we are already exposed to 2.4GHz wifi, 2.4GHz bluetooth, 2.7GHz NEXRAD RADAR, 1GHz television, FM, AM and other bands. No harmful effects of LISTENING... just like listening to a radio, you and I could stand right next to each other and both pick up a signal, and convert the power with no effect on the signal. Just like listening to a radio... when the wave is sent out from the radio station... it goes out in all directions.. your antenna picks up the wave, and converts it into sound waves. Instead of converting the radio waves into Sound waves out of a speaker, you convert the radio waves to DC power. It does NOT suck in radio waves, thus there is no loss to the people already beaming out the signal. For instance... mobile phone companies are sending out near 2.4GHz in some cases from cell phone towers... you could pick up that general frequency, and convert it to DC without them ever knowing, or experiencing loss.. and technically the actual "power" isn't coming from them.. just the frequency.... :) ______

Mike Makes a CUSTOM Apple Watch Charging Stand

05:40
Ryan Parker just bought an Apple Watch and wanted to make a charging station to hold it next to his iPhone. We designed this stand together and made it from layered wood (black walnut) and UMHW plastic. It uses the magnet from the Watch charger to hold it horizontally next to his phone and will be able to display the time ( Watch OS 2). Next week we plan on adding LED lights to the base so that the white plastic illuminates when it's plugged in! Overall this project came out WAY more professional than my expectations. The finished product looks and feels solid. Hidden Wireless Charging in a Desk Top

04:01
*****Please note that any time you embed electronics into wood there are potential safety hazards. I recommend that you don't install a charger in an enclosed cabinet and you don't charge for long periods of time. You assume all responsibility if you decide to do this for yourself. ***** Wireless charging is cool. Wireless charging that is completely hidden is even cooler! When I built my Executive Desk, I knew I wanted to include wireless charging as a feature but I didn't want to look at a charging pad all the time. To hide the charger, I can route a recess in the underside of the desktop and charge directly through the wood. The big question is, how much wood can exist between the charger and the device? Much of this depends on the charger and the device itself, but my tests showed a bare iPhone X working with as much as 1/4" thick stock. When it comes to phone cases it's a crap-shoot since cases come in so many different sizes, thicknesses, and materials. So if you plan on installing hidden wireless charging in a desktop, I highly recommend testing for yourself.  -- The Executive Desk - https://thewoodwhispererguild.com/product/executive-desk/ -- Wireless Charger - https://amzn.to/2w1vNY8 -- Circle Template - https://amzn.to/2wnh0Xp -- Pattern Bit - https://amzn.to/2wbD1bq -- My iPhone case: https://amzn.to/2PrlVyX SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thewoodwhisperer TAKE YOUR WOODWORKING TO THE NEXT LEVEL http://thewoodwhispererguild.com SUPPORT US ON PATREON! http://patreon.com/woodwhisperer PRODUCTS RECOMMENDED BY MARC https://www.amazon.com/shop/thewoodwhisperer CHECK OUT OUR SECOND CHANNEL http://youtube.com/woodwhispereroffcuts CHECK OUT OUR SHOP TOURS http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/shop-tours/ GET INSPIRED BY OUR VIEWER PROJECT LIBRARY http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/viewer-projects/ DOWNLOAD OUR FREE APP Android: http://bit.ly/1MQ4ks1 or iOS: http://bit.ly/177u4An WIN FREE TOOLS! http://thewoodwhisperer.com/giveaway Follow me on: TWITTER - http://twitter.com/woodwhisperer FACEBOOK - http://facebook.com/thewoodwhisperer INSTAGRAM - https://www.instagram.com/woodwhisperer/ Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/woodwhisperer/

It was intentionally simple and left a lot of room for upgrades and modifications. After I posted that video, many of you had some really great ideas on how to improve it. Someone in the comments noted that the original dust shroud didn't allow the saw to make compound miter cuts, I don't often do these cuts, but it did seem like an unnecessary limitation I placed on myself. To allow the saw to lean over a full 45 degrees and pivot the same amount, I had to widen the center section that the saw sat on. And to help with the dust shroud issue, I made the front magnetic so that when I need to make a compound cut I can snap the face on and off. I also read that I should have some type of grate or slats to catch larger off-cut pieces that may get sucked up by the dust collector hoses. I had some spare metal mesh that I cut to match the dust port openings and screwed them in from the bottom. This addition really helped keep the little corner cuts from rattling around in my dust collector. A simple and effective comment someone made was that the stop blocks should have a miter cut into the area that contacts the corner of the table. Because the table and the stops were both 90 degrees, dust can get stuck and cause binding. I solved this by taking the stops over to the belt sander and adding the chamfer. This can also be done with a router or a table saw quite easily. One thing someone noted, which I had planned to do on the first iteration, was to add some type of measuring tape to the table. I found that Kregg makes an adhesive-backed metal measuring tape. This tape comes in two variations, one that can be read from left to right, and one right to left. I stuck the tapes on each side of the saw making sure to line up the teeth of the blade with the zero mark. Lastly, I wanted to use the empty space on either side of the side housing for additional storage. A while ago, I made a simple shelf for some parts containers and I've always wanted more of them. I built some more shelves in the same style using 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch plywood and mounted them next to the saw. I got more containers and I'm slowly filling them with essential hardware. Thank you to everyone for commenting on the last video. Those suggestions really helped improve the functionality and performance of this simple tool station. And for all those that may have been surprised, yes I do read all the comments, and as you can see they can be really helpful. If you liked this project revisit, check out more projects from around the shop!

In case you haven't seen it, be sure to watch my older video all about setting up the Raspberry Pi (using RetroPie) and the controls. If you've got that system all up and running, putting it in something is the next step! I've been working on the plans for this system for a long time, rethinking them over and over to include all of the stuff I wanted my cabinet to have. This was especially important to me, since my wife gave me the OK for this to go in our living room. In my mind, that means that it HAD to be as practical as possible (even though it's completely impractical by nature.) The biggest difference in my cabinet and the vintage cabinets, is the fact that the modern electronics can literally fit in your pocket, so the majority of the cabinet is empty. I wanted to take advantage of that with my design... I decided to keep all of the electronics in/around the controls and monitor. This left the area below the controls, and behind the monitor open, so I made them into storage. Underneath the controls is a simple bookshelf with two doors. Behind the monitor was harder to get to, so I designed the cabinet so that one side panel could actually swing open, revealing six drawers, each 24" deep. Being able to swing open the side panel COMPLETELY changed the structure, in comparison to most cabinets, but I totally think it was worthwhile. Second channel: bit.ly/iltms-2
