5 Steps diabetes diet plan for weight loss

03:07
1. Excercise Exercise keeps off the weight. Research shows that people who increase physical activity along with reducing calorie intake will lose more body fat that people who only diet. For confirmation, look at the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), a database of 4,000 men and women who have lost 30 or more pounds and kept it off. Only 9 percent reached and maintained their weight-loss goal without exercise. Most people in the register chose walking as their form of exercise. 2. Eat breakfast The most effective diabetes diet includes breakfast. Skipping breakfast can lead to overeating later in the day when you become ravenous. This can sabotage weight-loss plans and cause blood sugar levels to surge. Studies show that eating breakfast, especially if it's cereal, is associated with better weight loss. A common characteristic among the NWCR participants is that most of them ate breakfast. 3. Cut calories The exact number of calories that people on a diabetes diet should consume depends on a number of factors, including age, gender, current weight, activity level, and body type. A reasonable goal for people with type 2 diabetes is between 1,200 and 1,800 calories per day for women and between 1,400 and 2,000 calories per day for men. 4. Feast on fiber Does your diabetes diet include lots of fiber? If so, you're doing your type 2 diabetes a favor. Generous amounts of fiber help lower blood sugar levels and speed weight loss. In one study, adults who consumed the most fiber-rich foods had the least amount of body fat. Aim for three servings per day of fiber-loaded fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Toss fiber-rich legumes, like chickpeas and black beans, into salads, chili, and soups. 5. Eat mini-meals A diabetes diet structured with three or more small meals daily is better than a diet plan that includes only one or two big meals. Large meals can cause blood sugar levels to surge, while eating smaller meals more frequently will keep glucose levels lower after eating. Plus, a diabetes diet consisting of mini-meals spread through the day will help control hunger and calorie intake, leading to faster weight loss.

7 Foods To Avoid When You Have Type 2 Diabetes

04:45
Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition that, according to a recent study, is the most common form of diabetes. In this particular type of diabetes, a person’s body becomes incapable of making or using insulin in an effective way. This phenomenon is also referred to as insulin resistance. And that is why, it is also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes. Also, as you can imagine, people suffering from this type have a high level of blood sugar. The case of insulin resistance can get worse if a person has extra body fat. That is why, it is highly imperative to steer clear from food items that are loaded with saturated fats and they should exercise on a regular basis to keep body weight under check. So, today we’ve curated a list of certain types of foods that you must steer clear of if you’ve type 2 diabetes. These foods can raise the level of bad cholesterol and increase insulin resistance. And people who have this type of diabetes are at a high risk of developing heart-related problems. Staying away from these foods and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for one’s health and well-being. So, take a look at the types of food you must avoid if you have type 2 diabetes, here. 1. Sugar Sugar is a strict no-no for any diabetes patient, be it type 1 or 2. Foods like cookies, soda, etc., can raise the blood sugar level. So, avoid food items that have a high content of sugar in them to keep your blood sugar level in check. 2. Full-fat Dairy Products People suffering from type 2 diabetes have insulin that is resistant in performing the body functions like breakdown of glucose. And food products that have a high level of saturated fats in them are considered to exacerbate this problem. And that is why, it is advised to stay away from curd, cheese, etc. 3. Raisins Dried fruits like raisins are a great source of healthy nutrients and minerals, but they also have a high content of sugar in them. So, avoid them to keep your blood sugar level regulated. 4. Processed Meat People suffering from type 2 diabetes have a higher chance of developing heart diseases. And consumption of processed meat can increase that risk, as it can raise the cholesterol level and exacerbate the risk factors of this type of diabetes. 5. Baked Foods Baked food items have a certain kind of fat in them that can increase the level of bad cholesterol. Moreover, they are high in calories. Consuming baked food items on a regular basis can increase the case of insulin resistance. 6. Alcohol Very few people are aware of the fact that the organ that plays an important role in balancing the ratio of blood sugar and insulin is the liver. And it is well known that consuming alcohol is not good for the liver. So, cut down on the quantity of alcohol you consume to stay healthy. 7. Fried Foods Fried food items are loaded with saturated fats. Consuming such foods can cause an individual to gain extra weight, which can further exacerbate the case of insulin resistance. So, these are foods that you must avoid at any cost if you have type 2 diabetes. Tips On Controlling Diabetes With Diet And Exercise

08:17
http://goo.gl/QCJ9b0 - How to reverse diabetes! Turns out, the diabetes industry is selling us fake research! Hi! I'm robo-Suzie and today I'll talk to you about Tips On Controlling Diabetes With Diet And Exercise. Also don't forget to check out the link below, to find out, how this guy reversed his diabetes! Turns out, the diabetes industry is selling us fake research! But back to our topic. Controlling diabetes with diet and exercise is something that every diabetic is tasked with because the alternative is bleak. Medications or insulin shots can only do so much. Diet and exercise allow you to lessen the effects of diabetes on your body and life and help you thrive even with this diagnosis. In the case of type 2 diabetes, diet and exercise may even allow you to reverse this type of diabetes. Get in the game. Fight for your life and health. Diet and exercise is the best way to accomplish this. The Outlook is Bleak. Not taking a proactive approach to diabetes treatment will lead to kidney disease, heart disease, blindness, high blood pressure, stroke, infections and wounds that are slow to heal or never heal, limb amputation and even falling into a diabetic coma when severe. Controlling diabetes with diet and exercise is one of the best ways to ensure that this is not your present and future. But you need not be afraid or feel powerless because simple changes to your lifestyle can produce amazing results and you will be able to live a long and productive life even if you have the more serious type 1 diabetes which is not curable or preventable. 1. Controlling Diabetes with Diet. The word "diet" has such negative connotations and at the mere mention of it, many people recoil. At the mention of the word, most people think it means that you won't be able to eat anything you like, or anything delicious, or will be starving and so forth. But when a diet for diabetes is talked about, it simply means a well thought out plan for eating. In some cases, you may even be able to still eat some "bad" foods on occasion as long as you are aware of how they will impact your diabetic eating plan and what adjustments you may need to make when you eat these "bad" foods so that your blood sugar levels do not go crazy and cause you problems. In addition, creating a proper diabetes eating plan will help you get a better understanding of how various foods impact blood sugar levels which will help you make the decision on which foods to eliminate and which to include. For instance, soft drinks, refined grains, etc, have been shown to increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and also increasing inflammation in the body. Knowing this will help you make the choice to eliminate soft drinks (regular and diet) and hopefully encourage you to drink more water and to select complex carbs in placed of processed foods made from refined grains. It is important to remember that a healing diabetes diet will vary from one diabetic to another. You have to find the diet that will work for you. Some diabetics may be able to eat certain foods whereas another many have to eliminate that food. There isn't one diet that will work in all cases. One may need to follow a low fat, high carbohydrate diet while another may need to follow a low carbohydrate, high vegetable diet, etc. Find what works for you. While you may be confused about what to eat and what to avoid, you should be prepared to experiment with various recommended foods to see which ones raise your blood sugar levels and which ones help to normalize it. To find which foods are best for controlling blood sugar, you need to monitor your blood sugar levels for a period of time such as two to three weeks. Measure your blood glucose levels first thing in the morning, after breakfast, after meals as well as snacks and also before you go to bed. Also measure the sugar levels before and after physical activity. Once you have an understanding of how your blood sugar levels are affected, you will then be in a better position to create a diet plan that works for you and helps heal your body naturally. 2. Controlling Diabetes with Exercise. The other aspect of controlling diabetes is exercise. It is amazing how effective exercise can be against type 2 diabetes especially. The best thing you can do against diabetes is exercise. It is also the least expensive when you consider how much you have to spend on diabetes medications, insulin injections, etc. Effective exercise can be as simple as a walk or run, swimming, dancing, cycling, etc.

What is prediabetes? Prediabetes is a condition, that if not treated, often leads to type 2 diabetes within 5 years. In fact, 1 in 4 people with diabetes, don't even know they have it yet. There are a lot of factors causing type 2 diabetes, but the most important ones are genetics and lifestyle. Particularly poor lifestyle choices with eating too much of the wrong foods and not moving your body enough can cause insulin resistance, which simply means your body doesn't process insulin the way it should. Even though your body produces insulin to move sugar to your cells, the cells are resistant to the insulin. Insulin resistance often leads to type 2 diabetes. 5 Diet And Exercise Tips For Type 2 Diabetes: 1. Include more foods high in protein with every meal and snack. Foods high in protein also help keep you satiated and feeling full longer. Type 2 diabetes diet tip: consume more foods high in protein to balance your blood sugar and improve insulin resistance. 2. Drink more water Water can help keep you feeling full. Next time you think you feel hungry, drink a big glass of water. You'll be surprised that a lot of times you're just dehydrated, not actually hungry. Type 2 diabetes diet tip: before you eat any meal, drink a big glass of water to help reduce your hunger and appetite. 3. Consume more essential fat Essential fats are super important because they are involved in pretty much every process and cell in the human body. Omega 3's, with the highest quality EPA and DHA, are primarily found in wild fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, and anchovies, as well as in a fish oil supplement. Type 2 diabetes diet tip: every time you eat at a nice restaurant, order salmon. Also, supplement with fish oil. 4. Exercise more with a focus on resistance training Exercise is the main way to burn excess calories and grow more muscle tissue to help increase your resting metabolic rate (RMR). This means people with more lean muscle tissue will actually burn more calories than obese people, even when the body is not moving. Type 2 diabetes exercise tip: Follow a workout program that focuses the majority of your workouts on resistance training with weights to help improve insulin sensitivity. 5. Control Your Insulin Hormone The problem with insulin occurs when there is too much insulin present in the body at one time. This happens when people have a diet high in sugar, which eventually causes insulin resistance, and potentially diabetes. High glycemic foods comprised of refined sugar and flour are the main offenders in releasing large amounts of insulin. Type 2 diabetes diet and exercise tip: keep your insulin balanced by focusing on lifting weights in the gym and eating primarily paleo approved foods such as plants and animals.  Bottom line Use these 5 diet and exercise tips for type 2 diabetes to help reverse type 2 diabetes naturally. Controlling Diabetes Complications with Diet, Exercise, and Medical Advancements

03:13
Diabetes is quite a common condition all over the world, which is why there have been many methods developed to deal with it. However, the condition is not at all as simple as it may seem. This is because there are also diabetes complications to consider as well. As expected, these complications can be either short-term or long-term, depending on their nature and severity. The common ones include foot problems, diabetic eye problems, and thyroid problems. All of these can have serious impacts on the health of the diabetic patient himself. Therefore, it comes as a must to control these complications as much as possible. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can try, just to do this. The first thing that you can do is to keep studying the condition. If you think about it, it is actually a bit hard to diagnose someone as a diabetic. This is because a person can easily be regarded as healthy, in spite of the fact that he is indeed diabetic. What's more, many diabetic patients do not really know much about their condition at all. Thus, it comes as a must to be as informed about the condition as possible. There will always be medical advancements and new technology arising. Once this information is made public, you should take time to educate yourself regarding these new developments. This just might pave the way for a healthy life free from diabetes complications. The second thing that you can do is to incorporate appropriate changes in your diet. Befriend your diet, so to speak. Upon diagnosis of the condition, do not put off incorporating the necessary changes. Start educating yourself right away, especially regarding the correct diet and nutrition plan for you and your current condition. Diabetes and obesity usually go hand in hand, so there is a definite need to change your diet accordingly. It is never too early to stop eating junk food and start eating well-balanced and healthy meals. The third thing to do is exercise. Much emphasis should be placed here because as diabetes and obesity go hand in hand, so do exercise and diet. In fact, the effects of diet just would not be the same without the incorporation of exercise. Have your physician or fitness instructor develop the ideal fitness program for your condition. And when your exercise regimen has been developed already, be sure to stick to it. You have to be as vigilant as possible here. Remember that having diabetes complications will only worsen your problem. So, it should be in your best interest to be mindful of these three tips and prolong your life accordingly.

Tips On Controlling Diabetes With Diet And Exercise

09:19
transcript Controlling diabetes with diet and exercise is something that every diabetic is tasked with because the alternative is bleak. The Outlook is Bleak Not taking a proactive approach to diabetes treatment will lead to kidney disease, heart disease, blindness, high blood pressure, stroke, infections and wounds that are slow to heal or never heal, limb amputation and even falling into a diabetic coma when severe. Controlling Diabetes with Diet and Exercise 1. Controlling Diabetes with Diet The word "diet" has such negative connotations and at the mere mention of it, many people recoil. 2. Controlling Diabetes with Exercise The other aspect of controlling diabetes is exercise. Moderate exercise performed consistently that leads to modest weight loss has been shown to prevent insulin resistance that can lead to pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Those who have diabetes also benefit from regular exercise as exercise can not only help control blood glucose levels but can also help prevent serious complications from diabetes. Exercising regularly is one of the best ways to improve insulin sensitivity. Insulin resistance is one of the main issues with the development of type 2 diabetes and results from the body not recognizing the insulin that is produced by the body which keeps glucose in the blood and not removed from the blood and transferred to the cells where it is needed for energy which ends up starving the cells in th

GESTATIONAL DIABETES - Diet Plan By Dietitian Jyoti Chabria

01:51
BEST TIPS on GESTATIONAL DIABETES starting from diet plan, exercises & weight management. When you hear the word gestational diabetes I’m sure many of us would raise our eyebrows! Well, let me put it across in a simpler way. This type of diabetes is common in pregnant woman and remains only till the time of her delivery. After delivery the patient is considered no more a considered a diabetic. Some women are unfortunate when the gestational diabetes tends to stay on and goes not go away. This happens in very rare situations accompanied with other complications. Gestational diabetes during pregnancy is a temporary phase where the body goes through a number of changes. Did you know that gestational diabetes is also known as ‘Mellitis”? Let us have a brief look at what really causes diabetes in pregnant woman: Pregnant woman do not really need to worry about their blood sugar levels rising because it usually reaches normal levels during the course of time. I’m sure you all would want to know the reason for high sugar levels in pregnant woman! One major cause is the fact that the placenta produces more insulin than normally required by the body, and results in hormones getting blocked. Gestational diabetes occurs in women generally during the last semester of the pregnancy. The best way to make sure that you are not a diabetic is to get your blood sugar levels checked right after your delivery and regularly for the consecutive six months. A healthy diet for gestational diabetes is also very important to be followed. Pregnancy is one such phase in a women’s life which she always looks forward to. The period of pregnancy should be followed with some form of exercise for gestational diabetes. This would go a long way in making the pregnancy easier for the women. Risk factors for gestational diabetes: 1. Obesity: Women who are overweight are under a greater risk of getting gestational diabetes. Therefore it is important to keep a check on your weight during pregnancy. 2. High blood pressure: Pregnancy tends to increase the blood pressure levels in women. In order to avoid such a situation, it is always advisable to do some yoga or meditation to keep the mind calm. Some basic precautions to be taken during pregnancy are: Healthy diet plan:  It is important to follow a similar diet as a diabetic patient. Once the baby is born, the mother can go back to her normal eating habits since all the sugar parameters come back to normal levels. Food to be consumed by the patient is as follows- low fat skimmed milk, drumsticks, spinach, fenugreek etc.  Food that should be avoided is- Potatoes, beetroots, bananas, mangoes, grapes and custard apples. Exercising:  This is another way to maintain normal sugar levels in the body. Exercising like taking small walks or yoga can help you control the glucose levels in the body. A check on your weight: weight management is quite a task for many mothers to be! Controlling your weight can go a long way in keeping your sugar levels well under control. I hope this bit of information has been educational in some way to all of you! So remember gestational diabetes is just a temporary phase but can be problematic if you are not precautions. As the old saying goes ‘Precaution is better than cure’!  Jyoti Chabria is a Consultant Dietitian for many major hospitals, colleges and corporates in India. She is a national award winner for her nutrition product line ‘Nutriline’. The Best Diet For Type 2 Diabetes

16:34
http://bloodsugarblueprint.com Type 2 diabetes is a growing pandemic and the information that healthcare professionals are giving to their patients is often inaccurate and not based on the latest research of what works today. Type 2 diabetes is NOT a lifelong disease, it is 100% preventable and reversible. Using research proven methods in the area of diet, nutrition and exercise a diabetic individual can have total control over their diabetes and their health. No longer do you have to take poisonous diabetic medications that are plagued with dozen of side effects. These diabetic medications are often more dangerous than diabetes itself, but are being pushed on to you by the medical and pharmaceutical community as the answer to your type 2 diabetes. There is absolutely no reason why you can't wean yourself off these medications and just use other holistic methods (nutrition & exercise) to treat, manage, and cure yourself of type 2 diabetes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jwAGunPFXo References: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/early/2010/01/13/ajcn.2009.27725.abstract http://annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=1846638 Flight V. Is Diet And Exercise A Real Diabetes Treatment Option For Type 2 Diabetes?

01:35
http://newdiabetescure.tamoev.com ◄◄ THE ONLY NATURAL TREATMENT FOR DIABETES THAT REALLY CURE DIABETES AND REALLY WORKS!!! Is Diet And Exercise A Real Diabetes Treatment Option For Type 2 Diabetes? The foundation of any diabetes treatment is diet and exercise. The reason for this because type 2 diabetes is caused by diet and culture. Whenever I'm working with a physician they almost always agree with me that diet and exercise is the best medicine. Therefore the foundation of any diabetes treatment comes down to proper nutrition and exercise. Our bodies simply aren't equipped to be able to handle large amounts of food with low activity. And there is no wonder obesity is a major risk factor to developing Type 2 diabetes. Researchers studied the Pima Indians for over 30 years only to conclude that, while 50% of adults have diabetes, 95% of them are overweight. Obesity and lifestyle are two of the biggest reasons why diabetes has been on the rise over the past few decades. If we could just get these two things handled we'd be well ahead of the game. To help accomplish this here are 3 things that are very important. Education and motivation There is hope. You don't know what you don't know. So to begin this journey you have to get educated. It takes learning about what the disease is about and taking baby steps towards new habits. Not to mention a desire to make things happen. It takes discipline at times and doing things differently if you want a different outcome in life. Type 2 diabetes is really just a result. It's a result of eating the wrong things and in most cases not being active enough. Diet modification The difference between diabetes and other diseases is that we have to eat to survive which is why we have a great amount of control here. The first thing you have to understand is carbohydrates are usually the culprit in most cases. Carbs have the biggest impact on blood sugar problems. Especially after you eat a meal. So it is vital that you understand and take the right actions here. While the ADA requires an intake of around 130 grams of carbohydrates per day, I don't think there is a one size fits all solution. I do agree that fiber is key and must be added to and increased in your diet. When I say fiber I mean foods like vegetables, nuts and grains. Also, all of these fad diets that are popping up left and right that are low-carb aren't recommended. Especially if you're overweight. Type 2 diabetics need the same amount of carbs as non-diabetics, just it's important to get the right kind of carbs. Another important one is saturated fat. You should limit your saturated fat intake to less than 7% of your caloric intake. And cholesterol should be limited to less than 200 mg/day. One whole egg has about 200 mg of cholesterol. Fish is also recommended because they are a good source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. The omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the risk to heart disease. Exercise The exercising muscle can increase the amount of sugar that gets into the muscle by up to 20 times the resting muscle. Exercise also results in increases in HDL the good cholesterol and decreases LDL the bad cholesterol. When you exercise your muscle cell walls become more flexible and allow glucose to get inside right from the bloodstream. This in turn lowers your blood sugar. This is one of the biggest reasons why it is so important to exercise. If you did nothing else but exercise alone you could control your sugar. I know two people who were highly motivated patients who did this who didn't want to go on medication. One became a marathon runner. Talk about motivated. In general, a good exercise routine should be at least 3 times per week and at least 30-60 minutes. Here are a few more guidelines: 5-10 minute warmup 20-40 minutes of aerobic exercise such as walking at an appropriate pace 5-10 minute cool down period To wrap this up, diet and exercise have been shown to have a lasting effect on blood sugar and controlling diabetes. It is by far at the top of the list when it comes to diabetes treatment. Int modern culture it has become commonplace to just pop a pill and get that quick-fix. However, I think it is more sustainable and effective to get to heart of the matter and address the underlying problem not just with diabetes but all areas of your life. cure for diabetics treatment options for diabetes diabetes prevention curing diabetes naturally controlling diabetes diabetes care diabetes causes how to treat diabetes how to prevent diabetes treatments of diabetes reverse diabetes managing type 2 diabetes diabetes cures home remedies for diabetes treatment for diabetes type 1 diabetics herbs for diabetes diabetes natural cure natural diabetes treatment sugar diabetes diabetes type 2 treatment homeopathic treatment for diabetes

Diet and exercise prevents diabetes in dogs too Canine obesity

04:36
Today's Alternative News Channel - Diet and exercise prevents diabetes in dogs too Canine obesity is on the rise, along with all the related health problems Research shows that overweight and obese dogs suffer from a host of health problems like musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular diseases, glucose intolerance, diabetes, and bladder and mammary cancer. A high-fat diet, which leads to excess weight and obesity, was also linked to canine pancreatitis, which is characterized by appetite loss and vomiting. Science has shown that fat produces hormones that cause inflammation and creates stress on body tissue. It is now widely acknowledged that heavy dogs have shorter lives than their leaner counterparts. In fact, slightly overweight Labrador retrievers were found to live two years shorter than those didn’t suffer from this problem. How do you know if your pet dog is overweight or not? The key is his body weight. Dogs that weigh 10 to 20 percent above their ideal body weight are yes, overweight. Obese dogs are those who weigh 20 percent more than their ideal weight. Do This Instead of Exercise to Burn the Most Belly Fat

06:52
http://naturalhealthsherpa.com/do-this-instead-of-exercise-to-lose-weight/522147--What if I were to tell you that exercise is fairly useless for losing weight? Now before you accuse me of heresy, let me explain. There's no doubt that exercise is one of the best things in the world you can do for your health. Exercise improves mood—in some studies as well as antidepressants—and it's great for your heart. Recent research shows that it even helps you grow new brain cells.1 And people who exercise on a regular basis have lower risk for cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.2 But weight loss? Not so much.3,4 Does that seem contrary to everything you've heard? Of course it does—but don't shoot the messenger. Here's the truth: the exercise/ weight-loss equation is way more complicated than we've been led to believe.

Type 2 diabetes Risk factor and Health care Diet|Exercise||Oral Medications||Insulin|Reduce Stress

08:15
Certain risk factors related to both lifestyle choices and medical conditions can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. These include: • Cigarette smoking • Being overweight or obese, especially around the waist • Lack of exercise • Consuming a diet that is high in processed meat, fat, sweets, and red meats inherited Type 2 Diabetes Risk Factors Some risk factors for diabetes can’t be controlled. Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, and African Americans have a higher than average risk for getting diabetes. Having a family history (parent or sibling) with diabetes increases your risk. Those over 45 have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes than younger people. Women's Type 2 Diabetes Risks Women who developed gestational diabetes in pregnancy have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life. The same goes for women who have babies larger than 9 pounds. Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Attacks Around two out of every three people with diabetes die of heart disease. Over time, elevated blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels, leading to an increased risk of clots. This increases the risk of heart attack. People with diabetes are also at an increased risk for stroke because of the damage to blood vessels. Kidney Risks Related to Type 2 Diabetes The risk for developing chronic kidney disease increases with time in people with diabetes. Diabetes is the most common cause of renal failure, making up about 44% of cases. Keeping your diabetes under control can reduce the risk of kidney failure. Medications are also used to reduce the risk of kidney disease in people with diabetes. type 2 Diabetes and Eye Damage Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the tiny blood vessels within the retina of the eye due to high blood sugar levels over time. This can cause progressive and permanent vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of new blindness in people between 20 and 74. This image shows pools of blood, or hemorrhages, in the retina. Type 2 Diabetes and Nerve Pain Tingling, numbness, and a sensation of "pins and needles" are all symptoms of diabetic neuropathy, or nerve damage related to diabetes. This is most common in the hands, feet, fingers, or toes. Controlling diabetes can help prevent this complication. Foot Damage and Type 2 Diabetes Damage to nerves caused by diabetes can make it hard to feel injuries to the feet. At the same time, damage to the blood vessels can reduce circulation in the feet of people with diabetes. Sores that heal poorly and even gangrene are complications of diabetes that can occur in the feet. Amputation may be the result in severe cases. Type 2 Diabetes Care: Diet Keeping good control over blood sugar levels can help reduce the risk of getting complications from diabetes. Your doctor can refer you to a registered dietician or diabetes counselor to help you formulate a healthy eating plan. Many people with type 2 diabetes will need to monitor intake of carbohydrates and reduce calories. Watching total fat and protein consumption is also recommended. Type 2 Diabetes Care: Reduce Stress Stress is particularly worrisome for people with diabetes. Stress not only increases blood pressure, but it can also increase blood glucose levels. Many people with diabetes find that relaxation techniques can help manage their condition. Examples are visualization, meditation, or breathing exercises. Taking advantage of social support networks is also helpful, like talking with a relative or friend, member of the clergy, or counselor Type 2 Diabetes Care: Oral Medications Oral medication is recommended for people with type 2 diabetes who cannot adequately control their blood sugar with diet and exercise. Many types of oral diabetes medications are available, and these may be used in combination for the best results. Some increase insulin production, others improve the body’s use of insulin, while still others partially block the digestion of starches. Type 2 Diabetes Care: Insulin Some people with type 2 diabetes also take insulin, sometimes in combination with oral medications. Insulin is also used in "beta-cell failure," a condition in which the pancreas no longer produces insulin in response to elevated blood glucose. This can occur in people with type 2 diabetes. If insulin is not produced, insulin treatment is necessary. Testing Your Blood Sugar Your doctor can suggest how often you should test your blood glucose. Testing can give a good idea of the extent to which your diabetes is under control and can tell you if your management plan needs to be altered. Healthy Diabetes Diet Tips

Currently, there is no cure for Diabetes, although researchers are making strides in the field every day. However, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can be managed successfully by following a proper diet, getting regular exercise and, in some cases, using diabetes medication. Diabetes Diet Treatment of diabetes almost always begins by following a diabetes diet designed to control blood glucose levels. Generally speaking, a healthy diet of a diabetic is a healthy diet for non-diabetics: 40 to 60% carbohydrates, 20% protein and 30% or less fat. Avoidance of excess consumption of sugar is also an important part of a diabetes diet. Diabetics don't have to avoid sugar entirely, but need to incorporate it as part of a balanced diet, being careful not to add sugar to foods. At each meal, diabetics can eat two to five carbohydrate servings, one protein serving and a small amount of fat. Following are general guidelines on what types of food to incorporate and types of food to avoid. A dietician or doctor can provide a balanced diabetes diet plan to follow. Carbohydrates make up the balance of the diet, and include fruits, vegetables, dairy, beans, and starches (such as bread and rice). Reach for fresh fruit. Eat vegetables that are fresh, canned or frozen. Choose bread that’s high in fiber and low in sugar. Avoid canned fruit, dried fruit or fruit juices, all of which have excess sugar added. Protein sources include meat, poultry, dairy products, fish, and beans. Eat more fish and chicken than red meat and reach for low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Avoid eating poultry skin and excess fat on cuts of meat. Fat is necessary for the body, but should be used in moderation. Fat is in dairy and meat products, and the butter, margarine, and oils often added to food during cooking. Check with your healthcare provider about the number of fat grams you should be eating each day. Avoid fried foods, mayonnaise-based food, egg yolks, bacon and regular dairy products, choosing fat-free and low-fat dairy instead. Be sure to check low and fat-free dairy product labels to see how many carbohydrates they contain, and add those grams to your daily carbohydrate intake. An important part of a diet for managing diabetes is controlling portion size. Be sure you are eating the right amounts of the right foods to maintain a healthy diabetes diet. If a diabetes diet isn't totally controlling blood sugar levels, a doctor may prescribe diabetes medication. Medication does not cure diabetes, but helps manage insulin levels.

Expert Panel Host: Hans Diehl (A podcast version of this video is available on iTunes.) • Hans Diehl, DrHSc, MPH, FACN, program founder and Clinical Professor of Preventative Medicine at Loma Linda University, uses his years of experience in the area of lifestyle medicine and charismatic presentation style to guide participants through the fascinating research surrounding dietary and lifestyle choices and our health. Hans teaches an affordable, lifestyle enrichment program designed to reduce disease risk factors through the adoption of better health habits and appropriate lifestyle modifications. The goal is to lower blood cholesterol, hypertension, and blood sugar levels and reduce excess weight. This is done by improving dietary choices, enhancing daily exercise, increasing support systems and decreasing stress, thus aiding in preventing and reversing disease. Han’s recommendations are based on the fact that 75% or more of our Western diseases are “lifestyle-related,” according to the U.S. Surgeon General[1]. These diseases are connected to our processed diet; lack of exercise; overuse of cigarettes, alcohol, and caffeine; increased levels of stress; and the quality of our support systems.
