When you come into contact with a substance you're allergic to, your body treats it like an invader and goes into overdrive. These reactions can be anything from a mild case of hives and headache to severe sinus or breathing issues, to something called anaphylaxis which can kill you and requires a shot of epinephrine from a device such as an EpiPen. For more mild allergies, there are many treatments from simply avoiding what you're allergic to with food allergies to taking Benadryl or other over the counter medications for seasonal allergies. Some allergies require shots or drops under the tongue in hopes to retrain the immune system to no longer see the allergen as a threat, and "cure" the allergy. Peanut allergies are on the rise in the US and UK, and researchers aren't really sure why. What we do know is that reactions range from mild to fatal, and only require minimal contact to occur. Soy is a less common allergy that usually effects children, but it's a difficult one to have as soy is found in nearly every processed food, from baby formula to pre-prepared meat products and cooking oils (even if they aren't labeled as containing soy). Nickle is a metal (the metal the coin was originally made from), and some people are actually allergic to it. Often found in good costume jewelry, if your earring posts or necklaces make you itchy or leave behind a rash or dry flaky patches of skin, you may be allergic to nickle. Nickle is also commonly found in zippers, eyeglass frames, cell phones, and keys. Egg allergies are mostly common in children and are usually outgrown but not always. The proteins that cause the allergic reaction are actually only present in the egg white; however, all eggs must be avoided as it's impossible to not cross contaminate the egg yolk and white. Egg proteins are all used in many common vaccines, which is why your doctor will ask if you have an egg allergy before administering any vaccine. Penicillin is a group of antibiotics and one of the first sets of antibiotics to be regularly used. Discovered in 1928 by Alexander Flemming, penicillin was put into use regularly in 1942. Reactions range from a mild rash to anaphylaxis. Sulfates are chemicals that occur naturally in some foods and are added as a synthetic preservative in others. About 1 in 100 people are sensitive to these chemicals and reactions can be life threatening or something as simple as a mild headache. Tree nut allergies are one of the most common allergies in adults and children. Reactions can be life threatening and most experts recommend those with a tree nut allergy carry a epinephrine auto-injector pen with them at all times. Tree nuts include walnuts, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, and almonds among others. They do NOT include seeds such as sunflower or pumpkin seeds or peanuts which are technically a member of the legume (bean) family. An allergic reaction to apples is actually one of the more common culprits of Oral Allergy Syndrome, or OAS. If you get tingling, itching, or swelling in your lips, tongue, or throat after eating apples, you may be allergic. The proteins in apples break down when they're cooked, so many people who cannot enjoy raw apples can still enjoy apple pie and apple sauce. Formaldehyde is a chemical that is frequently used to treat fabrics, specifically anti-chlorine, anti-wrinkle, waterproof, and suede finishes. It's also found in some beauty products such as nail polishes. Contact with formaldehyde can cause rashes and contact dermatitis. And more... Read food labels. Packaged foods must say if they have peanuts. Ask how food is prepared and let servers know you’re allergic. If you’re allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, like walnuts, may bother you too. Milk and Dairy Foods Milk is one of the most common food allergy trigger for kids. The good news -- most outgrow it. In the meantime, infants may need hypoallergenic or soy formula.If you’re breastfeeding, you may need to avoid drinking milk too. Look at the label on packaged foods. Even things like tuna can have milk protein in it. Sometimes milk is listed as the ingredient casein. Eggs These are another common food allergy trigger for kids. While many outgrow this allergy, watch out for eggs in noodles, mayonnaise, and baked goods. They can also be in some unlikely places like the foam topping on drinks or the egg wash on pretzels. Eggs are also used to make the flu vaccine, so check with your doctor before getting it. Shellfish Surprise! You can get a sudden seafood allergy as an adult. If you do, sorry seafood lovers, it’ll probably stick with you for life. Shrimp, crab, crawfish, and lobster -- these guys can cause serious reactions. Clams, mussels, scallops, escargot, octopuses, and squid can cause reactions, too. If you’re allergic, avoid all shellfish. Tree Nuts It can seem like nuts are everywhere. They can even be in lotions made from tree nut oils, like shea oil. Nuts must be listed on packaged foods, but they're harder to avoid in restaurants and bakeries. If you’re allergic, watch out for walnuts, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios, Brazil nuts, and pine nuts. Nutmeg, water chestnuts, and sunflower seeds aren't nuts and should be OK. Fish Fresh salmon, tuna, or halibut can cause severe allergies. If you’re allergic to one type of fish, you may react to others, too. Be careful if you love Thai and Chinese food. Many ethnic restaurants flavor dishes with fish sauce. Also beware of Caesar dressing and Worcestershire sauce. They have anchovies in them. Soy Breads, cookies, canned soups, processed meats, and snack foods all can have soy in them. If you’re allergic, read food labels carefully so you can steer clear. Other foods to avoid include edamame, tofu, soy milk, miso, and soy sauce. Babies and children are more likely to have a soy allergy than adults. Wheat From bread to beer, salad dressing to deli meats, wheat can hide in a lot of foods. Why? Wheat proteins help some processed food stick together and give it texture. If you’re allergic to wheat, other grains, like barley, oats, rye, corn, and rice are usually safe. But you may want to avoid bulgur, couscous, and farina. It's possible to have a wheat allergy but be OK to eat gluten. Gluten Sensitivity? Intolerance? If you’re gluten-sensitive, that’s different from an allergy. Gluten is usually found in wheat, rye, and barley. It can trigger: Gluten Intolerance or Celiac disease -- Gluten can cause permanent damage to your intestines.Gluten sensitivity -- Your stomach and intestines are upset by gluten. Food allergy - Diagnosis Diagnosis There's no perfect test used to confirm or rule out a food allergy. Your doctor will consider a number of factors before making a diagnosis. These factors include. Also share information about members of your family who have allergies of any kind. A physical examination. A careful exam can often identify or exclude other medical problems. A skin test. A skin prick test can determine your reaction to a particular food. In this test, a small amount of the suspected food is placed on the skin of your forearm or back. A doctor or another health professional then pricks your skin with a needle to allow a tiny amount of the substance beneath your skin surface. If you're allergic to a particular substance being tested, you develop a raised bump or reaction. Keep in mind, a positive reaction to this test alone isn't enough to confirm a food allergy. A blood test. A blood test can measure your immune system's response to particular foods by measuring the allergy-related antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE). For this test, a blood sample taken in your doctor's office is sent to a medical laboratory, where different foods can be tested. Elimination diet.You may be asked to eliminate suspect foods for a week or two and then add the food items back into your diet one at a time. This process can help link symptoms to specific foods. However, elimination diets aren't foolproof. An elimination diet can't tell you whether your reaction to a food is a true allergy instead of a food sensitivity. Also, if you've had a severe reaction to a food in the past, an elimination diet may not be safe. Oral food challenge. At 18 I was diagnosed with 7 food allergies, and 6 months later I was diagnosed with 45 allergies including wheat, corn, soy, potatoes, tomatoes, nuts, fish - everything! I lived off of rice products for a long time. Now at 21, a lot of my allergies have turned to sensitivities, but I still have to be careful about what I eat!
