How do you increase your prices without upsetting your customers? The other day I was reading a great blog post by Brian Halligan, CEO and Co-Founder of Hubspot on going from Startup to Scale-Up. One area that I loved was his thoughts on the “Monetization Decision” What they realized is that early on they were lacking multiple pricing axis. At the time they only had one when companies like Salesforce had 4. That’s something we learned when building out Flowtown, our SaaS product that allowed companies to get social and demographic data appended to their customer email list. If you look at the top 250 software as a service businesses, most have an average of 2-3 different ways to extract value from their software. So in today's video I want to share the 4 most common ways to add additional pricing axis to your product. Here they are: 1) Plans: This is a no brainer and most SaaS companies offer different tiers of plans or packages for their products. 2) Number of Seats: If your product allows for it, charge for additional accounts or access to more admin features for teams. 3) Add-Ons: Many times this can be a 3rd party integration, or some feature that has a direct cost to you for providing but that you can upsell to your customers. 4) Other Services: This would be if you have any other products or solutions within your organizations. At Salesforce.com, these are their other Cloud product suites like Support & Marketing. The key is to provide other elements of your solution as upsells or revenue maximizers so that your salespeople have something to offer to increase their Average Contract Value (ACV). Using these strategies will allow you to improve your profitability and re-invest in marketing and sales activities to take your startup to the next level. Upgrade your pricing axis. Despite operating in the emerging alternate energy car market (and rampant skepticism that electric cars could even compete), Tesla had an incredibly successful IPO in 2010 and continues to struggle to produce cars fast enough to meet demand. It seems amazing that they’ve been able to pull that off without marketing, but Elon Musk’s explanation for their success is simple: a relentless focus on making the highest-quality cars possible. The vast majority of Tesla’s budget (and about 70% of Musk’s time and energy as CEO) is devoted to research and development. Musk only spends 2 to 3% of his time talking to the press, with plans to cut it down to 1% so he can free up time for – you guessed it! – more focus on engineering and design. Marketing done right can be extremely powerful; I’m not saying it has no place in your business model. The vast majority of us don’t have Elon Musk-level capital to fund our businesses and get them off the ground. But if it comes down to a choice between more marketing for a mediocre product, or money money spent improving product quality, I’d choose quality every time. Make a Fortune on Social Media #1: Promote someone else's product. Whether it's from the affiliate rake, or they're paying you a specific cost per promotion, or whatever it may be, why not just promote someone else's product? For example, I have a huge social media following, or at least I think it's a decent size, for anything marketing related. So if I go out there and I say, hey, you should use Ahrefs or BuzzSumo, or SEMrush. I've mentioned all those tools so many times on my videos. Most of these guys already have affiliate programs on the bottom of their website. All you have to do is sign up, and use that link whenever you're talking about them on the social web. Here's what's cool about it. You can even go to sites like Amazon, Best Buy. They all have affiliate offerings and pages. Make a Fortune on Social Media #2: partner with someone who has a product but doesn't have a audience. Make a Fortune on Social Media #3: place ads within your videos. If you're on social media, create videos and put them on sites like YouTube. They'll automatically put ads for you if you want to monetize it. Yes, you're not going to be the richest person, but you can easily make 2, three grand a month. That may not seem like a lot, but it could give you enough flexibility and freedom where you don't have to work for someone else. It's awesome and amazing. Money isn't everything in this world. Making enough to be happy and having that financial freedom, in many cases, is better than making 10, 20, 50, 100 grand a month. So don't always aim for making the most amount of money, also aim for financial freedom. And by just putting ads on your videos, or if you have a WordPress site you can allow them to monetize and you can let them make you money in promoting those articles via social media. It's an amazing way to end up making free money or little, or easy money, from ads. Make a Fortune on Social Media #4: influencer marketing. And not the same influencer marketing that I talked about a few strategies ago. Why not go and say, hey, you sell teeth whitening. I'll pay per post to promote you on Instagram. Oh, your Fit Tea, yeah I'll talk about Fit Tea. I'm a celebrity or a fitness Instagram page, and I can be breaking down and taking photos of how I'm using Fit Tea to get more fit and building these muscles. Make a Fortune on Social Media #5: Premium content. Here's what I mean by this. On Instagram, you see a lot of these models taking pictures of themselves. And then, they use something called Patreon where they're like, hey, you can subscribe on Patreon, give me money every single month, and I'll show you premium content. You can do the same thing. The bonus tip for you is, you don't need a product to generate income. You could go find someone else's product, white label it, in essence, you're creating your own business. They can drop ship it for you. And they'll do a deal where every time you sell a product, you send them the information, they'll ship it out, and you give them the money, and you keep the difference. I hope these tips help you monetize your social profile. It's not that hard. You have to put in the time and effort and be patient, keep tweaking. One model may be better for you versus the other one. But you won't know unless you test them all. So just try them out. Using dropshipping, you can start a business with money except for a very, very small cost. Learn how to start a business with no money (or basically no money) with method A: Start an ecommerce store and dropship items from Aliexpress ($23.88) Step 1: Create an ecommerce store with Wordpress & Woocommerce When you need to start a business with no money (or extremely little) every saving counts. The cheapest way to open an ecommerce store is with Wordpress. To do that, you will need a hosting plan and a domain name. The cheapest, most cost-effective way to get that is to signup with iPage. Simply head over to Aliexpress and find items in the niche that you are targeting, then list them in your own store. I have a video which gives great tips/advice on how to do this here: https://youtu.be/2CWrd2gdTIs Step 3: Market your Aliexpress dropshipping store with SEO (search engine optimization) For each product page, pick a keyword that best represents the item that you are selling and then make the following modifications to it: 1. Add the keyword to the title. 2. Add an item description that is at least 400 words. 3. Add the keyword into the description so that it has a keyword density of between 1-2%. 4. Add the keyword into the first 50 words of the description. 5. Add the keyword to the img alt data for the first image on the page. Using these techniques, you will be able to get free organic traffic. This is a good way to get traffic if you need to start a business with no money and can’t pay for Facebook ads. Here is another way to start a business with no money (or very, very little!). Method B: Start a dropshipping business on Amazon.com using USA-based dropshippers. Step 1: Locate USA-based dropshippers with SaleHoo ($67) 1. Go to SaleHoo and login to your subsciption. If you don’t have a subscription you can get one by clicking here: http://wholesaleted.com/y/salehoo 2. Next, click on “directory.” From here, click on the green “search” button without selecting a category. 3. Next, filter the results by region. Select “North America.” 4. Finally, filter the results by supplier type. Click “Dropshippers.” Step 2: Go through the suppliers and locate low-cost, high-demand items. 1. Go to a supplier and open up their catalog. You may need to contact the supplier to have them send it to you or give you access as not all catalogs are available to the public. 2. Take each item in their catalog and compare it to the going price on Amazon.com. Note down items that are priced lower in the supplier’s catalog to the prices on Amazon. 3. OPTIONAL: Check how often an item sells so that you can estimate the revenue you’ll get from it using Jungle Scout: http://wholesaleted.com/go/junglescout Step 3: List the items you are dropshipping on Amazon.com There are two ways that you can do this depending on whether the item already has a listing on Amazon.com or not. Both methods are free which is great when you want to start a business with no money: 1. If the item has a listing already, then add yourself as a seller.
