Building a Cigar Box Guitar "from Beginning to End"

11:32
3 hour Time lapse of a Cigar BoxBuild: Starting with tool overview. Start by measuring and cutting the maple neck and notching for the headstock and box lid. Using a fret spacing template I cut the fret slots using my "jig" table saw. Next I pre drill the holes for the "nail head" inlay position markers. The heal is cut, glued and clamped. While the heal glue is drying I take opportunity to file and shape the neck using files, sander, cylinder sander and sandpaper. After the neck is shaped install the frets. i use a soldering iron to burn in the position markers on the top side of the neck. Next I attach the neck to the box. First notch the box using handsaw, drill and files. I usually add internal bracing by cutting blocks and glueing them to the four corners. These provide support for the Cigar Box Lid help balance the weight and feel of the instrument. I also add mounting blocks under where the neck attaches to connect the neck securely to the box. This build features two sound holes, a hinge/bolt combo bridge and internal reverb springs. This guitar neck is covered with Boiled Linseed Oil. I use regular screws to connect the neck and the box to the mounting blocks. Standard quarter inch input jack is installed. A Disc piezo pickup is wired straight to the input jack and hot glued directly to the underside of the box top. The tuners are then carefully positioned, marked, measured and installed. I use a small triangle file to cut groove slots in the "jumbo zero fret". This (along withe the eyelets and bolt) help hold the strings in place. The saddle is just the threaded section from a large bolt. I cut it down to size with a grinder. (beware of sparks!!) This guitar is strung with acoustic strings A D G but tuned G D G. The "hook" on the top is so you can hang the instrument from a nail in the wall.

How to Build a 6-String Hollowbody Cigar Box Guitar

07:36
In response to a viewer question, this video will look at how to construct a true hollow body 6-string cigar box guitar. CLICK HERE to hear it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7a_9Ym5g30 We'll look at one method for doing this using a neck block and talk about bracing schemes. Many CBG designs involve a semi-hollow design with a neck-thru body, which chokes off acoustic resonance and makes the guitars only playable as electric instruments. This design provides for free motion of the top for a mellow acoustic tone akin to a regular hollow body instrument.

Cigar Box Guitar Build part 1

23:24
I bought a Cigar Box Guitar kit for my son's birthday, and this video shows the first part of the build (there will probably be three or four build videos in total). The kit was bought from Crimson Guitars (http://crimsonguitars.com/) and there is already an unboxing video here on my channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2Q3nVKhmxw). In this video, we cover the first three steps of the instructions - marking out, gluing the fretboard and preparing the body. This is a fairly long video since we describe the design and briefly show most of the steps performed in this first session. I hope it will be interesting to anyone who is considering buying one of these kits. We will give our verdict when it's finished!

Make A Cigar Box Guitar | 1 | C.B. Gitty Kit (CMRW#29)

I have wanted to build a cigar box guitar for over two years from the date of this video. I found some kits online at cbgitty.com so I decided that would be a good intro into the world of cigar box guitar building. This video shows the construction of such a kit. I decided to do all of the work and make the neck myself instead of purchasing one that was pre-made & pre-drilled. This one will be fretless, simply because the instructions don't include how to add frets. I did purchase the fretting guide and some fret wire, but I don't have the saw I need to cut frets yet. I think I will explore that area of guitar building on the next one. I got the kit from... How To Make A Fretted Cigar Box Guitar

17:23
A cigar box guitar tutorial was the first project video of this kind I ever filmed. That was 4 years ago. I've always wanted to build a fretted version from the ground up, and for this video I finally got around to it. I hope you enjoy! The goal I set for the design was to use only tools and materials that can be purchased at a local hardware store, other than a cigar box and guitar strings. Below are the parts and tools used for this project. I occasionally overlook an item in a video this long so let me know if you notice anything missing from the lists. If you try this project be sure to let me know! I would love to see a video of your own cigar box guitars. Tools: ----------------------------------------------------- Tape Measure Pen/Pencil Hand Saw Hammer(Mallet)/Chisel Drill w/Bits Sand Paper/Sanding Block Fine Grain File Gel Super Glue Tape Razor Paste Wax (optional) Materials: ----------------------------------------------------- 1” x 3” Maple Plank (must not be warped) Wood Cigar Box 1 1/2” Inside Corner Brace (x3) 4” Eye Bolts/Nuts (x3) Door Hinge Pin Fencing Staples 1 1/2” Finish Nails (x12) #18 x 5/8” Pins (x3) Acoustic Guitar Strings Total build time should be around 8 hours, so the project can fit comfortably into a weekend. The cost of the materials not including any of the tools is about $35. Not bad for a guitar! I suspect I am going to receive quite a few comments saying I should have used wing nuts on the tuners so a wrench wouldn't be required, and that was initially my plan. The bolts are a little too close together on my model for wing nuts to spin without hitting each other, but feel free to try it yourself. If you would like to build a guitar with a different scale length than 24" you can use this website to calculate fret measurements: http://www.harpkit.com/category/fretcalc.html The first song I play in this video is 'Prelude to Cello Suite No.1' by Bach. The later songs are improvised blues. I was in drop D tuning. I also want to give a shout out to one of my favorite song covers played on a frettless Cigar Box Guitar, check this out if you want to see how well a CBG can be played: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIIEhH7xOXg #NightHawkInLight -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Check out my latest video: "How To View Invisible Air Currents With Lasers" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K94Cc21KEIA -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

How to Make an Electric Cigar Box Guitar for $25

09:08
I've made a new CBG tutorial video, this time a fretted version. Check it out here: https://youtu.be/FDKCvCQzkTk Total build (not including glue dry time) took about 3 hours for this guitar. I did my best to use the most inexpensive parts possible. The only tools I use to carve the neck are a knife, hand saw, and a sharp hatchet. Green wood is the easiest to carve, but you risk it splitting as it dries. I used a green piece of maple cut off the tree only hours before and had no problems. The cigar box should be as strong as possible, made of solid wood, not cardboard or particle board. Java by Drew Estate uses an excellent box for this, and makes for a very nice looking instrument. The one I came across I have already used to make a stomp box, but if I find another it will become a guitar. Parts list: Tuning Heads - $18 Cigar Box - $2 1/4" Jack - $2 Bolts (bridge/nut) - $1 Neck - Free Microphone (speaker harvested from any outdated electronics) - Free Finishing Nails - Pennies...Free enough Certainly there are ways to make a nicer instrument. The point of this video is to show how quickly and cheaply a guitar can be made, not how to make a masterpiece. Depending on the feedback I get from this video I may make another showing how to build a nicer fretted guitar. How to Notch the Neck for Your Cigar Box Guitar

12:02
http://www.glennwatt.com When I started building my first cigar box guitar, cutting a notch out of the neck to fit on the tuners was once a daunting task for me. Notching out the neck so the cigar box lid would close? Forget it. I was stumped. This video is to help you do both. I kept the tools for this project to as few as possible. Drill and bits, miter box and saw, files, sand paper, pencil, square, measuring stick/tape, and clamps. In this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OmS_zaO5ak , I show you how to notch out the cigar box to fit the neck in. Cigar Box Guitar Build part 2

06:54
This is the second episode in the growing series of videos showing the build of my son's cigar box guitar, using a kit bought from Crimson Guitars (http://crimsonguitars.com/). This episode is much shorter than the first, because we didn't have so much time and we were working on a couple of tasks that were quite time-consuming, so there wasn't all that much visible progress today - we were mainly still working on the neck, and starting to radius the fretboard. We didn't really work according to the instructions today but this is all part of step 4, working on the neck. During this episode, I show you part of the process of making a radius block for sanding the neck to a specified radius (about 12.5"). Unfortunately, I seem to have forgotten to turn the camcorder on when I was cutting out the block. All I did, though, was to cut the sides and then cut out the arc that I'd drawn using a jigsaw, and then sanded it smooth. Radiusing the fretboard was taking a long time because of the density of the purpleheart fretboard, which we noticed is significantly harder than the maple of the neck. Purpleheart is a rather dense wood, with a specific gravity of 0.86 (i.e. 86% of the weight of water). For comparison, the specific gravity of maple is typically around 0.55; rosewood (the most common fretboard wood) can be anything from 0.63 to 0.96, depending on the species. You can see all of the videos in this series in my playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe7SMwjhIwWbb8LkuTx_ye2AkLBhfMHqz Episode three will follow soon, probably next weekend!

Electrify your playing and get that raw, swampy sound from your cigar box guitar. You can also easily electrify your ukulele or mandolin,...even your washtub bass or washboard! Use a 5/16 inch drill bit for the volume and tone controls, and a 3/8 inch drill bit for the input jack. Peel and stick the discs inside your guitar and you're done. Easy. Pro tip: use a layer of hot glue to seal up the pick up to reduce outside noises. Cigar Box Guitar Build part 3

15:48
This is the third episode in the series of videos showing the build of my son's cigar box guitar, using a kit bought from Crimson Guitars (http://crimsonguitars.com/). This episode focuses still on parts 4 and 5 of the instructions, "Working on the Neck" and "Fretting", and these parts are largely finished here although there's still a bit of final smoothing which will be done towards the end of the build. We used my new Proxxon IBS/e rotary multitool to cut the long fret ends down close to the edge of the fretboard, and that worked well. It seems like a very good tool, and we will use it again, maybe next time, to route out the spaces for the inlays. You can see all of the videos in this series in my playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... I'm not sure when episode will arrive due to other commitments over the next couple of weekends, but keep an eye out! We hope to complete the build in October, before I go to Crimson Guitars myself to build a complete guitar (that's the subject of another playlist here, https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe7SMwjhIwWZEMf-UdmHmR0C8JCn1bb5h).
