Memorial Hospital West Installs NicView Cameras In Nurseries Connecting Families Worldwide

02:18
Tiny cameras placed at the beds located in the Newborn Nurseries and Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Memorial Hospital West’s Family Birthplace are bringing instant connections among families worldwide through a secured web based system that can be accessed through various electronic devices. The secured camera system, known as NicView, allows families of newborn babies born through surgical births to watch their infants just moments after birth while mom is in recovery. The system allows parents to log in from home computers, tablets, and smartphones and watch a live video stream projected from a camera above the baby's bed. The live feeds have no sound and are used on a secure internet line that is designed to preclude recording by a parent or the hospital. Parents receive a password to log onto the system, which can be passed to other family members and friends helping families bond and spread their newborn news from the nurseries to families all around the world. “The installation of these cameras enhances patient- and family-centered care that is so vital at Memorial Healthcare System,” said Mary Bridget Roberts Ed.D. ARNP, NE-BC, Director of Nursing, Memorial Hospital West Family Birthplace. “Patients and families are thrilled to have the ability to see their newest family member via a password protected system that allows parents and extended family members 24/7 access to the new bundle of joy.” Since the installation of NicView on February 23, families have shared their baby’s video streams with families and friends in more than 10 different countries and over 15 states around the nation. More than 575 users have logged into the system by parents and families. The first installation of the NICview Cameras has been a successful program supported by Memorial Foundation. Memorial Healthcare System (MHS) is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the country and a national leader in quality care and patient satisfaction. Its facilities include Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar, Memorial Hospital Pembroke and Memorial Manor nursing home. Memorial Healthcare System Hires Chief Academic Officer To Lead Graduate Medical Education

06:04
Following its initial institutional accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Memorial Healthcare System has now hired Saima Chaudhry, MD, as its new Chief Academic Officer to lead Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Chaudhry will serve as the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer for all Graduate Medical Education programs at Memorial Healthcare System. While Dr. Chaudhry is in charge of the entire graduate medical education enterprise, her attention is currently centered on pursuing accreditation for the following residency programs: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Future residency programs will include surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and others that will support the community needs of South Florida. “There is an urgent need to support medical education in our community and create opportunities for physicians to stay and practice in South Florida once they graduate,” said Dr, Chaudhry, who comes from North Shore-LIJ Health System in New York with high credentials and proven success in leading medical training programs. “Memorial Healthcare System has so much to offer residents given its depth and breath of medical disciplines, physician expertise and its focus on quality and service.” Before joining Memorial, Dr. Chaudhry was appointed Professor of Medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, where she developed novel curricula for the new medical school. She also worked for the North Shore-LIJ Health System in New York, serving as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine. While there, she coordinated the merger of two residency programs into the 13th largest medical training program nationwide with nearly 160 residents. Prior leadership positions at North Shore-LIJ Health System include Associate Director and Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. She has been the recipient of numerous leadership awards and community service honors. Dr. Chaudhry has led and served on numerous regional and national professional groups and is noted to be an innovator in the field of graduate medical education. She was selected by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to serve on the New York Council on Graduate Medical Education and Chairs the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine Survey and Scholarship Committee. She has published extensively in the field of GME and participates in numerous speaking engagements nationwide. In addition, Dr. Chaudhry is affiliated with Academy Health, Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, American College of Health Care Executives, American College of Physicians and the Greater New York Hospital Association. The news that Memorial is now accredited to pursue residency programs comes at a time when Florida needs more of these spots available to help meet future demands for physicians. Nationally, Florida ranks 42 out of 50 states in terms of Graduate Medical Education spots per 100,000 population. A study published in 2005 by the Association of Medical Colleges estimate a shortage of physicians in the next 10 years in areas of primary care, medical and surgical specialties to the tune of 46,000 to 90,000 nationwide. Among the study’s recommendations is to support graduate medical education programs to help with this shortfall. Memorial is well poised to train future physicians given its evolution as a tertiary and quaternary institution that provides services such as adult and pediatric cardiac transplant, bone marrow transplant, trauma, intensive care and other services. Memorial Healthcare System is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the country and is a national leader in quality care and patient satisfaction. Its facilities include Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar, Memorial Hospital Pembroke and Memorial Manor nursing home. The system received the following recognition: Modern Healthcare magazine’s “Best Place to Work in Healthcare,” Florida Trend’s “Florida’s Best Companies to Work For,” and Becker’s Hospital Review’s “150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare.” For more information, visit mhs.net.

Adult Heart Transplants Now Performed at Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute

01:56
Hollywood, Fla. -- The Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute (MCVI), a leading provider of adult cardiac services in South Florida, has received federal approval from UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) to launch an adult heart transplant program at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. "This is a momentous occasion for the MCVI team, who has worked diligently to create a program of the caliber required for heart transplantation," said Richard Perryman, MD, medical director, MCVI. "We also believe it's great news for the South Florida community and the patients and families we have the pleasure to serve," Dr. Perryman pointed out. The MCVI Adult Cardiac Transplant Heart Program is the only one of its kind in Broward County and one of only two programs in South Florida to offer total heart care which includes heart transplantation. "MCVI's highly skilled, multidisciplinary team raises the bar even higher on cardiac care in the community," said Zeff Ross, senior vice president and chief executive officer, Memorial Regional Hospital. Prior to federal approval, statistics showed that a large number of patients did not have sufficient access to heart transplant services and many had to seek services outside South Florida and even out of state. The UNOS approval now clears the path for surgeon Enrique Gongora, MD, medical director, Adult Cardiac Transplant Program, to perform the first heart transplant in the hospital's history. Ioana Dumitru, medical director, Adult Cardiac Transplant, Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy, will lead the management of cardiac transplant patient care before and after transplant. "Heart transplantation demands a comprehensive team effort," Dr. Gongora explained. "Beyond the physicians, we're fortunate to have a team of high caliber, dedicated nurses, intensivists, perfusionists, and laboratory medicine experts -- all levels of patient care -- who are helping us make this dream a reality." Dr. Enrique Gongora is a board-certified cardiac surgeon. He earned his medical degree from the Universidad del Rosario in Bogota in 1992. Dr. Gongora completed residency training in general surgery and a fellowship in surgical critical care at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He then completed a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He then pursued further fellowship training in adult cardiac surgery and thoracic transplantation/mechanical circulatory support at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Prior to joining Memorial Healthcare System, Dr. Gongora served as Director of Thoracic Transplantation at Scott & White Clinic-Texas A & M Health Science Center College Medicine (Temple, TX) and as Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Drexel University College of Medicine, Hahnemann University Hospital (Philadelphia, PA). Dr. Ioana Dumitru is a board-certified advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist. She earned her medical degree from the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania in 1996. She completed her residency in internal medicine at St. Joseph Hospital/Northwestern Medical School in Chicago in 2000. Dr. Dumitru completed her fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and her fellowship in heart failure and cardiac transplantation at Washington University School of Medicine, in 2003. Prior to joining Memorial Healthcare System, Dr. Dumitru was the founder and Medical Director of the Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute is a leader in cardiovascular care in South Florida, offering a wide array of services dedicated to the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute Performs Broward's First Adult Heart Transplant

(Hollywood, Fla.) Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Memorial Regional Hospital made history this week by performing the first ever, adult heart transplant in Broward County. The hospital received UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) approval to launch the adult heart transplant program earlier this year, becoming one of only two programs in South Florida. The skilled cardiac transplant team is led by Dr. Enrique Gongora, Medical Director of the Adult Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute and Dr. Ioana Dumitru, Medical Director of Adult Cardiac Transplant, Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy. Both work with a high-caliber team of dedicated nurses, intensivists, perfusionists, and laboratory medicine experts, who were all on cue for the life-saving transplant. “We are very excited for our first heart transplant patient,” said Dr. Dumitru, a board-certified heart failure and transplant cardiologist. “The 51-year-old patient who received the life-saving transplant had end-stage heart failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy. We had been following her since this Spring.” The team is preparing for the next adult heart transplants, given they currently have six patients waiting for this miraculous gift of life. “Performing our first adult heart transplant is an achievement that reflects the steadfast commitment of Memorial Healthcare System to provide this community with world class cardiovascular care,” said Dr. Gongora, a board certified cardiac surgeon. “South Florida has historically been underserved for advanced heart failure care. Having a heart failure program, able to provide advanced heart failure care including heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices, is imperative to serve the growing number of patients suffering with advanced heart failure.” The adult cardiac transplant team is part of Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute’s Total Heart Care program. In August, Memorial Regional Hospital earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its ventricular assist device (VAD) destination therapy program. Destination therapy VADs are implanted in patients with refractory heart failure who are not eligible for a heart transplant. VADs have been proven to dramatically improve the long term survival and the quality of life of end stage heart failure patients. The expert cardiac care at Memorial Healthcare System also encompasses southwest Broward County, while also covering the spectrum from pediatric to adult cardiac services. Cardiac experts at Memorial Hospital West perform catheterization and emergency angioplasties. The pediatric cardiac team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Heart Institute – led by Dr. Frank Scholl, Chief, Pediatric Congenital Heart Surgery and Surgical Director, Pediatric Heart Transplant and Dr. Maryanne Chrisant, Medical Director of Pediatric Heart Transplant Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure Services – has successfully performed 17 pediatric heart transplants since 2010. Between all the programs dedicated to cardiac care at Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital West and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Healthcare System is poised to offer the community total heart care from the youngest pediatric patients to adults, and throughout South Broward County and beyond. Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute is a leader in cardiovascular care in South Florida, offering a wide array of services dedicated to the prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Its specialists work together as a multidisciplinary team using sophisticated diagnostic equipment and facilities dedicated solely to cardiovascular care. Outcomes of cardiovascular care are reviewed on a regular basis by multidisciplinary physician-review panels assisted by nurses specializing in quality assurance and utilizing computerized data collection. With extraordinary medical expertise, advanced technology and exacting quality guidelines, Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute offers a superior level of cardiovascular care to the South Florida community and beyond. Memorial Healthcare Uses FaceTime When Responding To Stroke Patients

02:31
Memorial Healthcare System of Hollywood, Florida, is using smartphone technology to improve outcomes for stroke patients and ultimately save lives. FaceTime video is the fundamental tool in a new pilot program in which Memorial Healthcare System is working with Miramar Fire Rescue in Miramar, Florida, to obtain valuable patient information that enables stroke teams at Memorial Regional Hospital and Memorial Hospital West to be at the ready when stroke patients arrive. Harnessing the features of FaceTime is the brainchild of Brijesh P Mehta, MD, a NeuroInterventional Surgeon at the Memorial Neuroscience Institute and Director of Stroke and Neurocritical Care, who says timing is everything, particularly when a large vessel stroke occurs.
