Memorial Awarded Grant To Provide Behavioral Health And Primary Healthcare Under One-Stop Clinic

02:29
Memorial Healthcare System is now providing residents in South Broward with integrated primary and behavioral healthcare under the same roof as part of a federally and county funded grant aimed at delivering personalized treatment plans for patients. The Mind/Body Wellness Project – administered by Memorial Outpatient Behavioral Health Center and South Broward Community Health Services– will form a Core Team that provides the services at its newly expanded outpatient clinic located in Hollywood, Florida. The federal grant, awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration with additional funding through the Broward County Department of Human Services, will provide for a dedicated nurse practitioner, an RN Care Coordinator, a Medical Assistant, an Integrated Care Manager/Social Worker, a Peer Wellness Coach and a Psychiatric Pharmacy Resident. The resources and personnel provided by the grant is now in addition to the center’s established multidisciplinary and multicultural team of licensed psychiatrists, advanced registered nurse practitioners, licensed psychotherapists and certified peer support specialists who use effective evidence-based approaches to help patients achieve their goals. Additional services will include nutritional services, exercise classes, smoking cessation and chronic disease self-management support. Each ancillary program is evidence-based and targets behavioral changes toward promoting health outcomes of the patient, said the center’s medical director, Clara Alvarez Villalba, MD. “Logistically, The Mind/Body Wellness Project and the Telepsychiatry will increase the access to a full range of medical care for patients. It will help improve coordination of care among providers.” The services are being provided at the Center for Behavioral Health, 3400 N. 29th Avenue, Hollywood, Florida. Additional clinical rooms have already been constructed and are now fully operational. As part of this initiative, telepsychiatry units will be installed at two South Broward Community Health Centers and one at Memorial Outpatient Behavioral Health Center so patients will be able to access behavioral health providers via video as part of their primary care visit. Project director David Freedman said having a clinic that provides both mental and physical healthcare will benefit patients who often seek help in one area, but not both. “While mental disorders including substance use issues are common in the United States, the burden of chronic illness is particularly concentrated among these patients,” Freedman said. Adults with both physical and behavioral health issues experience greater morbidity and mortality than those in the general population that do not have these co-occuring medical issues, Freedman said. Under the program, the Core Team will meet weekly to develop, oversee and manage a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Patients’ disease specific improvements will be evaluated initially to establish a baseline followed by six-month measurements of blood pressure, body/mass index, waist circumference, breath CO, plasma glucose, HgA1c, HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Mental health symptom reduction and sobriety over time will be monitored as well. For more information about the program, call (954) 276-3455. About Memorial Healthcare System’s Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services The mental health professionals at Memorial Behavioral Health Services provide comprehensive psychiatric and psychotherapy services designed to get individuals on the road to psychological well-being. Innovative evidence based programs are available for both adults and children through a variety of inpatient and outpatient programs, and treatment plans are tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient. Various grant-funded programs are offered at Memorial Behavioral Health Services including the Rebel's Drop-In Center, a peer-run outpatient program that operates in partnership with the Broward County Department of Human Services and the Broward Behavioral Health Coaliton/ Florida Department of Children and Families. Memorial Behavioral Health Services also receives Ryan White funding and offers HIV support through psychiatric evaluation and medication management, individual counseling, intensive substance abuse outpatient services, mental health counseling and ambulatory (outpatient) detoxification. Additional funding for substance abuse treatment is made available through the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition/FL Department of Children and Families. Memorial Behavioral Health Services accepts many health care and managed care plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Self-paying patients are also welcomed.

Memorial Hospital West Installs NicView Cameras In Nurseries Connecting Families Worldwide

02:18
Tiny cameras placed at the beds located in the Newborn Nurseries and Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Memorial Hospital West’s Family Birthplace are bringing instant connections among families worldwide through a secured web based system that can be accessed through various electronic devices. The secured camera system, known as NicView, allows families of newborn babies born through surgical births to watch their infants just moments after birth while mom is in recovery. The system allows parents to log in from home computers, tablets, and smartphones and watch a live video stream projected from a camera above the baby's bed. The live feeds have no sound and are used on a secure internet line that is designed to preclude recording by a parent or the hospital. Parents receive a password to log onto the system, which can be passed to other family members and friends helping families bond and spread their newborn news from the nurseries to families all around the world. “The installation of these cameras enhances patient- and family-centered care that is so vital at Memorial Healthcare System,” said Mary Bridget Roberts Ed.D. ARNP, NE-BC, Director of Nursing, Memorial Hospital West Family Birthplace. “Patients and families are thrilled to have the ability to see their newest family member via a password protected system that allows parents and extended family members 24/7 access to the new bundle of joy.” Since the installation of NicView on February 23, families have shared their baby’s video streams with families and friends in more than 10 different countries and over 15 states around the nation. More than 575 users have logged into the system by parents and families. The first installation of the NICview Cameras has been a successful program supported by Memorial Foundation. Study: 3D mammography finds significantly more invasive cancers and reduces unnecessary recalls

01:52
Hollywood, FL -- The results of a large, retrospectives study which are being published today in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) show that 3D mammography—also called tomosynthesis—finds significantly more invasive cancers and reduces unnecessary recalls. Memorial Healthcare System was one of 13 sites nationwide to participate in the study. "This study confirms what we already know -- 3D mammography finds more of the invasive, harmful cancers we want to find and, at the same time, saves women the anxiety and expense of having additional tests for what often turn out to be false alarms," explained Dr. Mary Hayes, director of Women's Imaging, Memorial Healthcare System. "We were proud to participate in such an important study." The study focused on the impact of 3D mammography on nearly a half of a million women throughout a diverse range of sites across the United States. It was led by Dr. Sarah Friedenwald at Advocate Lutheran Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. Key findings included: • 41% increase in invasive cancer detected with 3D mammography • 15% decrease in unnecessary recalls for false alarms In 2008, Memorial Healthcare System became the first facility to use tomosynthesis mammography in the state of Florida. In addition, MHS was one of eight nationwide hospitals that participated in the research that lead to FDA approval in 2011. Currently, 3D Tomosynthesis mammography is offered at our four Women's Imaging Centers: Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Miramar. "Women experience little difference between a conventional 2D mammogram and 3D imaging," said Dr. Hayes. "The exam takes just a few seconds longer and the positioning is the same. The real difference is in the information available to the doctor." She emphasized, "It's as if 2D mammography is the cover of a book and 3D provides the images to tell the complete story." Advances in the understanding of the role of genetics, family history and other exposures have altered the approach to breast imaging. At the Women's Imaging Centers at Memorial Healthcare System, breast imaging exams are tailored to each individual. Each patient is assessed with a personal risk profile, developed by the National Cancer Institute, to best meet patients' breast imaging and breast health needs. All MHS technologists are experienced, registered and licensed. All breast imaging exams are read and interpreted by experienced board-certified, fellowship-trained radiologists who specialize in breast imaging. If necessary, patients can also count on Memorial's multidisciplinary team of board-certified physicians who specialize in breast surgery, breast pathology, and breast oncology. Memorial Healthcare System is the fifth-largest public healthcare system in the country. It is a national leader in quality care and patient satisfaction and is ranked on Modern Healthcare magazine's list of Best Places to Work in Healthcare. Its facilities include Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar, Memorial Hospital Pembroke and Memorial Manor nursing home. Memorial Neuroscience Institute teams up with Alzheimer Association for its annual walk

(Hollywood, FL) Memorial Healthcare System is expanding its scope of neurology services with the newly developed Memorial Brain Health and Memory Center. Hilary Glazer, MD, a cognitive neurologist at Memorial Neuroscience Institute who specializes in memory, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and the prevention of cognitive decline will lead the Center. The number of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients diagnosed each year continues to rise, and even younger adults as early as their 20’s are having cognitive issues. For this reason, the need for specialized care, diagnosis, and prevention in this field is becoming increasingly critical. “Memory loss affects many,” Glazer said. “While dementia plays a majority role in the lives of older adults, research shows that people can live with cognitive impairment for 20 years or perhaps more, but the stress that this places on families is a burden that causes increased morbidity, hospitalizations, and nursing home placements. Working together with community physicians, we can provide families these resources so they are not left alone to cope with these changes.” The Brain Health and Memory Care Center provides patients and their families with the support, services and tools they need to reverse, slow, or stop the progression of memory loss and help them live life to the fullest. Dr. Glazer became passionate about helping families going through devastating memory changes after watching her mother care for her father during his battle with brain cancer. While her mother struggled with little support from his healthcare providers, she was inspired by a new approach to care that she learned about during her medical training: a compassionate, patient- and family-centered multidisciplinary team that focuses on up-to-date treatments and prevention – a model that she is developing at Memorial. “Everyone is at risk for memory changes,” Glazer said. “The key is to come to a memory specialist, someone who has fellowship training in this field. Families and individuals should come early at the first signs of memory loss because that is when our treatment has the best chance of working.” In the last five years alone, treatments and lifestyle interventions have been developed. There are ways families can incorporate treatments to prevent memory loss and even reverse memory loss with new approaches. The Brain Health and Memory Center at Memorial Neuroscience Institute incorporates a multi-disciplinary approach that is tailored to the individual and designed to empower the patient, their families, and caregivers to promote the best outcomes and get the most out of life. The Brain Health and Memory Center has offices at Hollywood’s Memorial Regional Hospital, and will have offices at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines. Dr. Glazer earned her medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis and completed neurology training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. She completed fellowship training in Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology from the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties at University of Florida. About the Neuroscience Institute at Memorial Healthcare System The Neuroscience Institute at Memorial Regional Hospital is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of neurological disorders and injuries in adults and children.
