Pink Ribbon Crazy Quilt Purse
I created this beautiful Pink Ribbon Crazy Quilt purse in honor of some special women in my life who have lost the fight to breast cancer and to those whom I know who have won the battle against it. In both cases, there are many. The pink ribbon is my own charted counted cross stitch design. I designed it several years ago when a dear friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer. I've since retired from designing counted cross but for my own reasons, I have decided to not only use the design on a purse but also to re-released the charted pattern for stitchers to use themselves. The Pink Ribbon Crazy Quilt purse measures 9 inches square. The embroidery, beadwork and embellishing is done entirely by hand. I've used a dark pink velveteen on the back and a pretty cotton print on the inside. This purse has a large heavy duty snap for closure and pink plastic handles. I will donate a portion of the sale of this purse to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help support them in Breast Cancer Awareness and the race for the cure. Wife's Loss Inspires Comforting Quilts For Cancer Patient
Deb VanSteenbergen knows the importance of a needle and thread. When her husband was diagnosed with cancer, she would accompany him to his treatments. While she sat and waited, she noticed people would be alone and cold during their treatment. At that moment she decided she wanted to give back. After her husband passed, she knew she had to start quilting in order to heal. Powered by volunteers and donations, Quilts That Care has made more than 500 quilts to date. Just For Mom is just one of the entertaining and informative destinations in the HooplaHa – Life with a Smile programming network. Sutter Breast Cancer Quilt Auction, KCRA-3, 4 p.m. Oct. 2, 2017
The public can tour an unusual art gallery during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – as the walls of the Sutter Cancer Center, 2800 L St., and other Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento facilities are covered with about 500 fabric artworks for the 2017 Breast Cancer Quilt Auction. Bids are being accepted now for most of the quilts, and the silent auction and showcase will conclude with the live, public auctioning of the best 50 pieces beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4. The public can tour and bid on the quilts from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. every day until then. Each of the quilts is a fabric work of art that was created specially for the quilt auction, which supports breast cancer services at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento. None of them is just tied; they are all quilted by artisans in the Sacramento region and across the nation. “These people didn’t just donate their used quilts,” said Jeanne Powell, auction committee chairwoman and a two-time breast-cancer survivor. “They’ve devoted many hours to creating each one and then donating them for services benefiting those with breast cancer.” Started in 1999, the Sutter Breast Cancer Quilt Auction is held every three years and is considered the first of its kind in the nation, leading to the creation of similar fund-raising auctions. More than $650,000 has been raised through the auctioning of 3,000 quilts in the past six auctions. The quilts are located on all floors of the Buhler Specialty Pavilion, which houses the Sutter Cancer Center, as well as on the first floors of the Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center and Sutter Capitol Pavilion. The Buhler building is located at 2800 L St. on the Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento campus. This is the first auction since the opening of the new Women’s and Children’s Center at 2825 Capitol Ave., whose first floor serves as the main lobby for the medical center, and the bare walls there have been turned into gallery-style showcases for auction quilts. The walkway of the Sutter Capitol Pavilion, at 2725 Capitol Ave., was set aside as walls for local artwork and is also adorned with quilts. Photos of the quilts are online at www.suttermedicalcenter.org/quiltauction/, along with more information on the auction, which is presented by the philanthropic arm for Sacramento’s premier, not-for-profit medical campus, the Sutter Medical Center Foundation.
