Big toe pain is fairly common, since the feet are constantly exposed to stress, overuse and injury from waling and running such as with sports activity. Arthritis When the big toes has limited movement, it is often associated with arthritis of the big toe. Degenerative arthritis of the big toe is painful stiffness and swelling of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The patient may need fusion of the joint. Hallux Rigidus Arthritis of the big toe joint may be present with large dorsal bone spurs. This is referred to as hallux rigidus. The condition restricts dorsiflexion of the big toe with swelling. There will be some cartilage remaining within the joint space and there will be bone spurring around the joint. The condition is treated by dorsal cheilectomy. Remove 25% of the dorsal aspect of the tarsal head including the dorsal osteophytes. The procedure is contraindicated if the pain is located in the mid-range of joint motion (advanced arthritis need fusion). Hallux Valgus (Bunion Deformity) The condition is more common in women than in men. Once a bunion gets to be painful and shoe wear is uncomfortable, surgery may be needed. Gout The first metatarsal joint is the most common joint in the body to be affected by gout. Recurrent pain in the big toe occur from gout. Gout is caused by the build up of uric acid that looks like needles and the deposit of uric acid crystals inside the joint are negative. Gout may resemble infection. Sometimes there is white tophus or cloudy aspiration. Aspiration and analysis of the joint fluid is the best method for diagnosis. Xrays will show punched out periarticular lesions. Most people with high levels of uric acid do not have a gouty attack. Turf toe Turf toe is the common term used to describe an injury to the plantar plate and sesamoid complex of the MTP of the big toe. It is an injury to the joint at the base of the big toe caused by hyperextension of the big toe. Occurs in contact sports. The injury is seen more from playing on artificial turf since it is harder surface than grass with little “give” when force is placed on it. Xray may show fracture or displacement of the sesamoid. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is associated with the aging process. Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease causing the deterioration of the cartilage within a joint. For most people, the cause of osteoarthritis is unknown, but metabolic, genetic, chemical, and mechanical factors play a role in its development. Symptoms of osteoarthritis include loss of flexibility, limited movement, and pain and swelling within the joint. The condition results from injury to the cartilage, which normally absorbs stress and covers the bones, so they can move smoothly. The cartilage of the affected joint is roughened and becomes worn down. As the disease progresses, the cartilage becomes completely worn down and the bone rubs on bone. Bony spurs usually develop around the margins of the joint. Part of the pain results from these bone spurs, which can restrict the joint’s movement as well. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a type of joint disease that results from breakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bone. The most common symptoms are joint pain and stiffness. Initially, symptoms may occur only following exercise, but over time may become constant. Other symptoms may include joint swelling, decreased range of motion, and when the back is affected weakness or numbness of the arms and legs. The most commonly involved joints are those near the ends of the fingers, at the base of the thumb, neck, lower back, knee, and hips. Joints on one side of the body are often more affected than those on the other. Usually the symptoms come on over years. It can affect work and normal daily activities. Unlike other types of arthritis, only the joints are typically affected. Causes include previous joint injury, abnormal joint or limb development, and inherited factors. Risk is greater in those who are overweight, have one leg of a different length, and have jobs that result in high levels of joint stress. Osteoarthritis is believed to be caused by mechanical stress on the joint and low grade inflammatory processes. It develops as cartilage is lost and the underlying bone becomes affected. As pain may make it difficult to exercise, muscle loss may occur. Diagnosis is typically based on signs and symptoms, with medical imaging and other tests occasionally used to either support or rule out other problems. In contrast to rheumatoid arthritis, which is primarily an inflammatory condition, in osteoarthritis, the joints do not typically become hot or red. Treatment includes exercise, efforts to decrease joint stress, support groups, and pain medications. Efforts to decrease joint stress include resting and the use of a cane. Weight loss may help in those who are overweight. Pain medications may include paracetamol (acetaminophen) as well as NSAIDs such as naproxen or ibuprofen. Long-term opioid use is generally discouraged due to lack of information on benefits as well as risks of addiction and other side effects. If pain interferes with normal life despite other treatments, joint replacement surgery may help. An artificial joint typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis with disease of the knee and hip affecting about 3.8% of people as of 2010. Among those over 60 years old, about 10% of males and 18% of females are affected. It is the cause of about 2% of years lived with disability. In Australia, about 1.9 million people are affected, and in the United States, 30 to 52.5 million people are affected. It becomes more common in both sexes as people become older. The main symptom is pain, causing loss of ability and often stiffness. "Pain" is generally described as a sharp ache or a burning sensation in the associated muscles and tendons, and is typically made worse by prolonged activity and relieved by rest. Stiffness is most common in the morning, and typically lasts less than thirty minutes after beginning daily activities, but may return after periods of inactivity. Osteoarthritis can cause a crackling noise (called "crepitus") when the affected joint is moved or touched and people may experience muscle spasms and contractions in the tendons. Occasionally, the joints may also be filled with fluid. Some people report increased pain associated with cold temperature, high humidity, and/or a drop in barometric pressure, but studies have had mixed results. Osteoarthritis commonly affects the hands, feet, spine, and the large weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees, although in theory, any joint in the body can be affected. As osteoarthritis progresses, the affected joints appear larger, are stiff, painful and may swell, but usually feel better with gentle use but worse with excessive or prolonged use, thus distinguishing it from rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of a joint effusion of the knee. Sometimes called degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic condition of the joints.

Joints are especially susceptible to wear and tear because of the movement and pressure that are necessarily applied to them.Joints are where two bones meet. They are connected with ligaments, tendons, and cartilage to each other and the surrounding muscles. The knee joint is the largest in the human body. It handles a tremendous amount of stress as it allows lower body mobility while supporting the upper body. Over time, the cartilage at the end of the bones that form the joint can deteriorate. In addition, there are fluid sacs in the knee capsule to keep the joint lubricated. These bursae can become irritated or inflamed if injured, resulting in bursitis. There are many potential causes for knee joint pain: Osteoarthritis – a chronic condition that occurs when the cartilage between bones breaks down Rheumatoid arthritis – an autoimmune disease that affects joints, causing swelling Bursitis – inflammation of fluid sacs either in front or directly behind the kneecap Immuno-inflammatory conditions Injury/over-use Infection Tendonitis – inflammation of tendons Gout – a form of arthritis in which uric acid accumulates and crystals of it settle in a joint Fortunately for our knees, there are natural remedies to reduce inflammation and ease the pain. The following recipe is a knee joint pain relieving rub. It contains effective anti-inflammatories and analgesics. Let’s look at what’s in it. 1. Cayenne. Cayenne has been used by Native Americans for millennia for pain relief. Capsaicin is a phytochemical in this spicy pepper that relieves pain through a variety of mechanisms. First, capsaicin blocks chemical pain transmitter “substance P” from reaching the brain. Second, when applied topically, it penetrates the skin to defunctionalize fibers that respond to pain stimuli. Through the skin, capsaicin stops nerves fibers from feeling pain and transmitting it. The capsaicin in cayenne is also effective for inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Cayenne works to relieve inflammation when taken internally as well. 2. Apple Cider Vinegar. Supremely beneficial for human health in a wide range of applications, ACV is a potent anti-inflammatory that can relieve joint stiffness. The acetic acid in ACV penetrates the skin and can help to break up acid crystals that can form in the joint. Acetic acid has also been found to provide effective relief for tendonitis and other joint inflammation. (2) Additionally, unfiltered ACV contains bone-supporting minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. 3. Olive Oil. Anti-inflammatory and emollient, olive oil is a wonderful carrier oil. 4. Ginger. A potent anti-inflammatory, the phytochemical gingerol inhibits excessive immune response that results in inflammation. A 2014 study of the daily topical application of ginger on joints of people with osteoarthritis (OA) resulted in pain relief within a week and continued for the 24-week duration of the study. Natural Rub Recipe for Bone, Knee and Joint Pain You can apply this paste on any joint to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. You may want to experiment with the recipe and mix half the amount of ACV with the olive oil; sometimes the rub can be quite strong and the olive oil will lessen heat and make the paste easier to apply. All of these ingredients will also reduce inflammation if you eat them. Please note that cayenne can stain fabrics, so take care around adjacent clothing.
