A high-protein diet is often recommended by bodybuilders and nutritionists to help efforts to build muscle and lose fat. It should not be confused with low-carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins Diet, which are not food-energy–controlled and which often contain large amounts of fat. While adequate protein is required for building skeletal muscle and other tissues, there is ongoing debate regarding the use and necessity of high-protein diets in anaerobic exercise, in particular for weight training and bodybuilding. Extreme protein intake (in excess of 200 g per day), coupled with inadequate intake of other calorie sources (fat or carbohydrates), can cause a form of metabolic disturbance and death commonly known as rabbit starvation. Even when consuming other calorie sources, consuming more than 285 g of protein per day (for an 80 kg person) may be unsafe. Relatively little evidence has been gathered regarding the effect of more moderate long-term high intake of protein on the development of chronic diseases. Increased load on the kidney is a result of an increase in reabsorption of NaCl. This causes a decrease in the sensitivity of tubuloglomerular feedback, which, in turn, results in an increased glomerular filtration rate. This increases pressure in glomerular capillaries. When added to any additional renal disease, this may cause permanent glomerular damage. As is apparent from the list below, many high-protein foods (indeed, most low-carb foods with protein) are fairly low in fiber. This can lead to discomfort if additional roughage is not added to the diet. Protein is described as essential by advocates of the high-protein diet, which includes a large proportion of the bodybuilding community; it is claimed to provide the muscle with amino acids required to repair the damage done by anaerobic exercise. High protein consumption leads to increased levels of IGF-1, a hormone which, among other things, increases muscle protein synthesis. Some consume protein supplements after bodybuilding workouts, as they provide a quick and easily consumable protein source. Alternatively, meat, beans, or other high-protein foods are consumed. It is possible to maintain a strict vegan high-protein diet, though due to the lower protein density of plant-based foods this requires a larger absolute volume of food compared to a non-vegan diet; simply put, vegans must consume a lot more food to get a lot of protein. Legumes and soy foods are two vegan sources with high protein content per calorie. Vegans may engage in protein combining to obtain a complete mix of amino acids. Although some testing shows that the body will absorb and use a greater amount of protein after "bodybuilding" type exercises than under more sedentary circumstances, and some studies on weight training show clinically significant gains in muscle with a very high protein diet when compared to more moderate intake, in some studies increased protein intake fails to translate into functional differences in strength or muscle size. However, consistently consuming less protein than an individual's body requires (approximately 0.7g/kg/day for a sedentary individual) causes loss of existing lean body mass, even with an excessively caloric diet.

The wasps are called gall-inducers. ---+ What do oak galls look like? If you’ve ever spent a Summer or Fall around oak trees – such as the stalwart Valley Oak – Quercus lobata, or the stately Blue Oak, Quercus douglasii – you may be familiar with the large, vaguely fruity-looking objects clinging to the branches and leaves. Commonly called oak apples, these growths are the last thing you’d want to put in your mouth. They are intensely bitter, loaded with tannin compounds – the same compounds that in modest amounts give red wine its pleasant dryness, and tea its refreshing earthy tang. That said, the oak apple’s powerful astringency has been prized for millennia. Tanning leather, making ink or dye, and cleaning wounds have been but a few of the gall’s historical uses. But on closer inspection of these oaks – and many other plants and trees such as willows, alders, manzanitas, or pines – you can find a rogue’s gallery of smaller galls. Carefully peeking under leaves, along the stems and branches, or around the flower buds and acorns will likely lead you to unexpected finds. Smooth ones. Spiky ones. Long skinny ones, flat ones, lumpy, boxy ones. From the size of a golf ball down to that of a poppy seed. These structures wear shades of yellow, green, brown, purple, pink and red – and sometimes all of the above. A single tree may be host to dozens of types of gall, each one caused by a specific organism. And their shapes range from the sublime to the downright creepy. One tree may be encrusted with them, like a Christmas tree laden with ornaments and tinsel; and the next tree over may be almost completely free of galls. Why? It’s a mystery. ---+ How do oak galls form? Galls are generally formed when an insect, or its larvae, introduce chemicals into a specific location, to push the plant’s growth hormones into overdrive. This can result in a great profusion of normal cells, increased size of existing cells, or the alteration of entire plant structures into new, alien forms. Lots of creatures cause them; midges, mites, aphids, flies, even bacteria and viruses. But the undisputed champs are a big family of little wasps called Cynipids– rarely exceeding the size of a mosquito, a quarter of an inch in length. “These tiny wasps cannot sting,” says Dr. Kathy Schick, Assistant Specialist/Curatorial Assistant at the Essig Museum of Entomology at UC Berkeley. “Gall-inducers are fascinating in that they are very specialized to their organ of the host plant.” ---+ What are oak galls? These wasp houses are not homes exactly, but more akin to nurseries. The galls serve as an ideal environment for wasp larvae, whether it is a single offspring, or dozens. Although he was aware of its existence, Ben Franklin could no more explain the food coma than modern science can today. It’s a mystery of biology. But this hasn’t stopped scientists from slapping a clinical term on it: postprandium somnolence. Post meaning “after” and “prandium” from the Latin for luncheon. It describes the sensation of getting sleepy after a big meal. But food comas are counterintuitive. After we stuff our stomachs with lots of calories, we should have an increase in energy, not a sudden decrease. And, following this logic, the more we eat, the more energetic we should be, no? Mysterious indeed. One food coma hypotheses is that the introduction of lots of food to the gut causes the body to redirect blood there to aid in digestion. Some of this redirected blood is taken from the brain, which leaves the human who’s recently eaten a big meal in a stupor. Sounds logical and hilarious, but, unfortunately, it’s wrong. Because it’s so important (and, possibly, because it’s the organ in charge of directing blood flow) the brain receives a steady supply of blood to meet its energy demands. While it is true that your gut receives more blood flow to aid in digestion, it comes from the skeletal muscles, not the brain. How about another one? The tryptophan myth. This one is commonly believed because so many people experience the food coma on Thanksgiving, and turkey – which contains lots of tryptophan – is a common feature of the Thanksgiving meals that lead to food comas. Tryptophan is an amino acid that is a precursor to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that is a precursor to melatonin, which is a hormone that aids in sleep. The logic goes that when eating a big turkey dinner, we eat a lot of tryptophan, which is ultimately converted to melatonin; hence the food coma. The problem with this hypothesis is that there’s more tryptophan in lots of other foods, like cheddar cheese, bacon, salmon and chicken that we don’t normally associate with food comas. Researchers believe that we’d have to ingest tryptophan alone on an empty stomach to notice any effect. When we eat it in food, it enters competition with all of the other fats, proteins and amino acids in food. So less of it gets absorbed and converted into melatonin. BUT! There is some science behind the Thanksgiving food coma. It turns out that when we eat lots of carbohydrates – like we do on Thanksgiving – the insulin released causes other proteins and amino acids to be absorbed by the muscles, but leaves the tryptophan untouched and in greater concentrations in the blood. This could ultimately produce a postprandium somnolent effect. And then there’s orexin. One of this neurotransmitter’s roles is to promote wakefulness and when the neurons that make it are turned off, we get drowsy. A 2006 study found that even modest increases in blood glucose – which rises when we eat – can lead to a decrease in orexin. So perhaps this is the key to food comas. For the time being, though, the jury is still out: We know food comas happen, we just don’t know how. So let’s order some wings and pizza and do some more science! German/Nat A leading scientist at one of the world's top sporting institutes believes doping among cyclists is on a par with swimmers. Professor Doctor Wilhelm Schaenzer, head of the Bio Chemistry Institute at Germany's Sport University, says drug misuse has been a problem in professional sport since the 1970s. He warned that sport stars taking drugs are dicing with death in the long-term. The Bio Chemistry Institute at Germany's Sport University is where many of the samples from top athletes end up for analysis. The International Olympic Committee has charged the laboratory here with undertaking tests on many of the world's top sporting stars. The institute was set up by Dr Manfred Donike who pioneered research on the effect of drugs on performance in sport. Professor Doctor Wilhelm Schaenzer, the head of the institute, says the methods for detecting traces of drugs has improved dramatically over the years. SOUNDBITE: (German) "It of course depends on which substance that we work. The stimulating products that were used in the past are from several types of amphetamines but this we can easily check. It is generally known that when you use these products there is an overheating of your energy reserves which in the past has led to deaths." He highlighted the danger of heart problems from anabolic steroids. It's used mainly in amateur body building which indicates that for a short period of time you heavily use these products. We don't have enough knowledge yet about the long term impact of these products but we are strengthening our efforts into studying this problem. With regard to hormones we must stress that if EPO is taken in an uncontrolled way by the athlete while it can lead to a thickening of the blood which while it will increase your energy level it might also lead to heart problems."
