Endocrine System, part 1 - Glands & Hormones: Crash Course A&P #23
Hank begins teaching you about your endocrine system by explaining how it uses glands to produce hormones. These hormones are either amino-acid based and water soluble, or steroidal and lipid-soluble, and may target many types of cells or just turn on specific ones. He will also touch on hormone cascades, and how the HPA axis effects your stress response. The Fantastical World Of Hormones With Dr John Wass (Full Biology Documentary) | Spark
Hormones shape each and every one of us, affecting almost every aspect of our lives - our height, our weight, our appetites, how we grow and reproduce, and even how we behave and feel. This documentary tells the wonderful and often weird story of how hormones were discovered. Presenter John Wass, one the country's leading experts on hormones, relates some amazing stories - how as recently as the 19th century boys were castrated to keep their pure soprano voice, how juices were extracted from testicles in the hope they would rejuvenate old men and how true medical heroes like Frederick Banting discovered a way to make insulin, thus saving the lives of countless diabetes sufferers. And hormones remain at the cutting edge of medicine as we try and deal with modern scourges like obesity. Content Provided By TVF International. Endocrine disruptors are everywhere and affect everyone: From Hormone-Altering Chemicals
Many of the products we use every day — drinking bottles, cosmetics, furniture, toys — can contain endocrine disruptors, chemicals that affect human health by altering the body’s natural hormones. Pregnancy and fetal development represent an especially sensitive life stage that may be uniquely vulnerable to the effects of endocrine disruptors, and the passage of a major overhaul of the Toxic Substances Control Act — the first such update in 40 years —provided the EPA with new power to review chemical safety and protect biologically vulnerable groups like women and children. What do we know about endocrine disruptors and their impact on reproduction, fertility and pregnancy? How do racial and ethnic differences influence our exposure to these chemicals and their impacts, and how can policymakers work to minimize their proliferation? In this Forum, scientists came together with policy experts to discuss the latest research on endocrine disruptors, risk management and recommendations for regulation decision-making. Part of The Andelot Series on Current Science Controversies. Presented jointly with The Huffington Post.
Allergies, Antibiotics & The Immune System w/ Dr. Leo Galland
Episode #136: Leo Galland, MD – The Allergy Solution: learn the top ways to uncover hidden allergies and how to rebalance your immune system. ➢ Dr. Galland's New book http://amzn.to/1VUDNSs ➢ Listen to the Audio in iTunes: http://highintensityhealth.com/itunes The big take-home from this interview and new book, The Allergy Solution, is that our environment has changed. We talked about new research that shows how environmental toxins may actually be causing plants to produce more allergens. Even more, environmental compounds may be causing your immune system to be increasingly susceptible to allergens. So, it’s a vicious cycle. Dr. Galland says the solution is not to suppress allergies with natural compounds, but to remove the triggers and also the prime protective T-regulatory cells. T-regulatory cells help keep inflammation in check. Hear about the top five ways you can give your T-regulatory cells and immune system a boost. --------------------------------------Lets Connect---------------------------------- ● Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MikeMutzelMS ● Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/metabolic_mike --------------------------------------Key Takeaways---------------------------------- 05:02 A New View of Allergies  At the beginning of the century, hardly anyone had allergies. In the US, at least 30% of people suffer from allergies. US government data indicates that over half of Americans will experience an allergic reaction during their lifetime. 12:50: Pollution Makes Pollen More Allergenic   Outdoor air pollution increases the allergenicity of the world in which we live. The US department of agriculture planted ragweed in the inner city of Baltimore, in the suburbs and in the countryside 40 miles away. The inner city urban ragweed plants grew twice as big as the rural plants and produced five times the amount of pollen. 20:45: Antibiotic soaps and Food Allergies When your skin touches Triclosan, the antibiotic soap, it is absorbed and travels throughout your body. Researchers measured the level of Triclosan in nasal secretions. Fifty percent of the people tested, had Triclosan in their nose. Triclosan is supposed to be antibacterial, but it changes the microbiome in the nose to increase the ability of dangerous staph bacteria to attach to human cells. If you have Triclosan in your nose, you have a greater amount of staph in your nose. It is a major cause of sinus infection and staph releases and secretes proteins called super antigens. If you are making them in your nose, they are in the mucus and you are swallowing them. Super antigens screw up your immune system. They inactivate a group of white blood cells called regulatory T-cells or T-regs. T-regs keep your immune system from over-reacting. People with allergies have defective T-reg cells. Studies done in Europe show that people who have nasal polyps, associated with chronic nasal allergies, inflammation and sinus infections, have a very high rate of food allergy. Study participants were more allergic to food than to environmental allergens. Nasal polyps are associated with staph. A study measured the amount of Triclosan in children’s urine. There was a direct relationship between the level of Triclosan in the urine and the likely hood that the children would have allergies. 26:48 The Microbiome: A lack of diversity of microbes in your gut, in your respiratory tract, and in your nasal mucosa is highly associated with allergy. The micobiome or fungal part of the microbiome is now being explored. As our microbial diversity is shrinking, the fungal organisms are taking over. The microbes living in our bodies have a profound affect upon your immune system. Two thirds of your immune system is located in your gut. The gut is the training center for your immune system. The lymphocytes in your gut circulate throughout your body and communicate information, returning to the gut. The gut is where the immune system gets most of its information. Antibacterials, antibiotics, herbicides and pesticides kill bacteria. Glyphosate (in Roundup) is in Roundup Ready GMO foods, because the plants have been designed to resist its effects. Glyphosate is an antibiotic. When chickens eat food containing glyphosate, their gut bacteria is screwed up and it encourages the growth of harmful bacteria.

Simon Sinek: If You Don't Understand People, You Don't Understand Business
About this presentation In this wide-ranging talk, ethnographer and leadership expert Simon Sinek discusses the importance of trust, authenticity, and meaning. Sinek argues that as individuals and companies, everything that we say and do is a symbol of who we are. And it is only when we communicate our beliefs authentically that we can attract others to our cause, and form the bonds that will empower us to achieve truly great things. Watch more videos here: http://www.99u.com/videos 0:32 how can you help the human race progress? 1:06 when you're surrounded by people who believe in what you believe something remarkable happens 1:30 we need trust 1:45 willing to experiment which needs failure 2:10 we're not goo by ourselves 2:28 the goal is not to fix our weakness but to amplify strengths 4:00 advantages 4:09 what are you in pursuit of? 7:07 we don't trust everyone. we trust people in our community but you have to know what to look for 7:35 authenticity matters (symbols of who we are) 8:35 if you say/do what you believe you will attract people that believe what you believe 10:23 Ability as designers is to create those tools of belief 18:16 spirit of generosity 18:20 willing to give to someone who will be willing to give to us 18:59 fulfillment - when you do something for someone else 20:09 when trust emerges, survival and progress goes up 21:36 how does that person encourage us to give? 25:58 100% of customers/clients and employees are people 24:20 anecdote 30:06 what are you doing to help the person next to you? About Simon Sinek A trained ethnographer and the author of Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, Simon Sinek has held a life-long curiosity for why people and organizations do the things they do. Studying the leaders and companies that make the greatest impact in the world and achieve a more lasting success than others, he discovered the formula that explains how they do it. Sinek's amazingly simple idea, The Golden Circle, is grounded in the biology of human decision-making and is changing how leaders and companies think and act. His innovative views on business and leadership have earned him invitations to meet with an array of leaders and organizations, including Microsoft, Dell, SAP, Intel, Chanel, Members of the United States Congress, and the Ambassadors of Bahrain and Iraq. Sinek recently became an adjunct staff member of the RAND Corporation, one of the most highly regarded think tanks in the world. He also works with the non-profit Education for Employment Foundation to help create opportunities for young men and women in the Middle East region. He lives in New York, where he teaches graduate level strategic communications at Columbia University. Avoid These Toxic Skincare Ingredients (GO CHECK THE INGREDIENTS NOW!)
On today's episode of Live Lean TV, I'm sharing why you should avoid these toxic skincare ingredients. ✔ FREE Live Lean Starter Guide: https://goo.gl/J6akpR You could be adding a lot of harmful chemicals and toxins to your body without knowing it. I referring to the chemical toxins you're probably putting into your body via your skincare products. In most cases, these skincare products are being added to your skin every day, meaning these toxic ingredients are being absorbed by your skin and body at a tremendous rate. People are not aware that most skincare products are loaded with toxic chemicals, rather than natural ingredients. These toxic chemicals are called xenoestrogens. Therefore it's very important to get into the habit of reading your skincare product ingredients, just like you do with your food. What are xenoestrogrens? Well first of all, xenoestrogens act as synthetic, estrogen mimicking hormones in the body. In excess, these man made chemicals may throw off the hormonal balance of both men and women. Important note to men: As guys, it's very important to maintain our testosterone as we age. The unhealthy foods we eat, the chemicals we put into our body, and the smoke and smog we breath in the air, are all lifestyle factors that may reduce our testosterone counts. The testosterone counts in today's males is probably the lowest it's ever been, due to all of these poor dietary decisions and lifestyle factors. This reduction in testosterone production is creating: - Muscle loss - Fat storage - Decreased sex drive and libido So if your goal is to stay lean and healthy all year round, it should be one of your goals to naturally maintain your testosterone production. Important note to women: These toxic chemicals are just as harmful for you. Over exposure can cause: - Infertility -Thyroid issues - Obesity -Cancer - Disease - And many other issues in your body So please take this topic seriously by avoiding these toxic skincare ingredients. Avoid These Toxic Skincare Ingredients: Note: you will NOT see the word "xenoestrogen" in your skincare ingredients. Here are the different types of xenoestrogens to look out for on your skincare product's ingredients list: - Parabens (including methyl-paraben and butyl-paraben) - Sulfates (including sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate) - Glycol (including propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol) These are just a few of the toxic xenoestrogens that you need to avoid in your skincare products ingredients list. What if my skincare products contain these toxic skincare ingredients? If your skincare products contain these toxic skincare ingredients, you have a few options. Option #1: throw everything out, buy new skincare products, and start over again. Yes, this will be expensive. Option #2: use up what you currently have, then buy new skincare products. Once you run out, buy healthier skincare products that do not contain any of these toxic skincare ingredients. Option #3: get rid of the unhealthy skincare products that you use daily, but keep the others. Then slowly build your way up to a cabinet of healthy xenoestrogen free skincare products over time. Raw Milk: Is It Good or Bad?-Transformation TV-Episode #014
To learn more about raw milk benefits, check out: https://draxe.com/raw-milk-benefits/ Raw milk is actually illegal in 17 states. It's a controversial topic, but I'd love for you to join the conversation! Did you know that milk may actually be bad for your bones? Learn the difference between raw & pasteurized milk and the best way to build bone strength, boost your immunity, and lose weight! Pasteurization and Homogenization: -During the process of pasteurization, milk is heated at high temperatures (150 degrees or higher) -Pasteurization destroys the enzymes and good bacteria in the milk. It also denatures the protein, damages the minerals, and inhibits the calcium absorption of the milk. -Homogenization helps break down the fat molecules of milk and makes milk creamier. -Homogenization results in oxidation of the milk. It converts the good fats in milk into bad, hydrogenated fats. It also converts sugar molecules from lactose to beta lactose, which results in a greater effect on blood sugar levels. Raw Milk: -Raw milk contains every essential amino acid. -Raw milk is loaded with probiotics to promote immune and digestive health. -Raw milk contains Vitamin D3, which boosts immunity and balances hormones in the body. -Raw milk contains CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) to help the body burn fat and lose weight. -Raw milk boosts nutrient levels and immunity, balance hormones, and helps the body burn fat and lose weight -As opposed to raw milk, which contains naturally occurring Vitamin D3, pasteurized milk contains synthetic Vitamin D2, which increases the risk of heart disease. Action Steps: 1. Eliminate pasteurized milk from your diet. 2. Get raw milk at your local farmer’s market or search for it online. Scary Facts About The Meatpacking Industry!
Scary Facts About The Meatpacking Industry! In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle, a not-so-fictional novel about the meat packing industry and its terrible secrets. While things have improved greatly since the horror show days of the old slaughterhouses, things can still be awful for the workers and the consumers. But how bad was it and how bad are conditions today? Here are ten things you didn't know about the meatpacking industry: This top 10 brought to you by Zero2Hero!! Don't forget to subscribe here! https://goo.gl/NXuChu Click here to find out Who was the GREATEST Female Warrior in History? https://youtu.be/mXfoWMdgQsA Number 10: OSHA Fines. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (or OSHA) was founded in 1971 and is in charge of inspecting company offices, warehouses and factories for safety and health issues. Unfortunately, their job can be tough when it comes to the meat packing industry. Laws could state that certain protocol must always be followed, but all the slaughterhouse has to do is make sure things look good when the inspector stops by once every few months. Once he's gone, it's business as usual. Records show that OSHA has not been fining companies nearly as much in recent years. Could it be that meat-packing plants have been vastly improving their health and safety? Could it be that they improve everything for inspection day? Or, could it be that they pay off OSHA to look the other way? It's hard to tell where the truth lies, but when news reports still come out about injured and harmed employees, it's a safe bet that the lack of fines does not come from higher quality working conditions. Number 9: Health Concerns. Meat packing has never been a safe profession. Sharp devices and crowded quarters are a recipe for disaster, and things have not improved much over the years. Couple this with little to no legal oversight in the past and regulators ignoring issues to this day and you have what is still one of the highest risk jobs in the country. Slaughterhouses of the past were known to have been covered with every liquid an animal has to offer. Before quality refrigeration, meat would spoil much quicker, creating a cloud of bacteria in the building for everyone to inhale. Like in the past, today's slaughterhouses put many employees at risk of injury due to fast acting machines and little physical room for error. Along with all of these conditions, employees tend to work long shifts with limited breaks, making human error a daily problem. A slip up here or there can easily lead to tainted meat hitting the market and poisoning the public. So, the next time you hear about a meat recall, it may not be due to something that happened at the farm. Number 8: Growth Hormones. Before we talk about Growth Hormones in your meat products…take a moment to subscribe to our channel for more videos from Zero2Hero! Don’t forget to like this video while you’re there, and click that little notification bell, too! It's simple math when you think about it. Pump an animal full of hormones to make them grow bigger and you'll get extra meat to sell. The only issue is what exactly is being put into the animals? What kind of affects does it have on the human body when we eat the meat? Growth hormones have been used of years to get more milk from cows, grow larger chickens and to get more product in every way possible. Regrettably, for the consumer, the science is still out on the long-term effects of these hormones when people eat the meat or drink the milk. Still, it all goes into our food without a problem. The European Union has long banned grown hormones for animals being used for meat, but the USDA is perfectly fine with it. It seems other countries may be catching onto something that the US isn’t. Number 7: Antibiotics As A Solution. Antibiotics are good. They eat bacteria and keep us healthy. That's why we have them in so many products. However, they can become bad pretty quickly when we ingest way too much of them. Thanks to the meat packing industry, we are probably doing just that. Stats show that up to 70 percent of all antibiotics created in the US are put into animals at the slaughterhouse. That's a ton of antibiotics for one single industry! Companies could just maintain cleaner conditions for the animals before they are brought to the meat packing plant, and they could maintain cleaner spaces at the plant, but instead they pack in as much "meat soap" as possible. While it may help prevent disease from developing in the processed meat, it could definitely be too much. When too many antibodies are introduced, it can weaken the immune system due to lack of any bacteria coming in at all. So, when a new bacterium shows up, it could be much worse that it would have been. Number 6: Cloned Meat. Cloning animals is nothing new. In 1997, scientists cloned "Dolly" the sheep, opening a can of worms for concerns about animal cloning for meat.

Toxic Stress
This video explains how negative experiences in childhood can impose large costs on brain health and development later in life. Our bodies respond to stress through various physiological mechanisms, such as increasing heart rate and the release of certain hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These processes are not necessarily harmful if attentive caregivers are present to limit their duration, intensity, and frequency. With strong social support, stress can be either positive or tolerable and result in healthy development. If a child lacks those resources or if stressors are severe, recurring, and chronic, hormone levels will stay high, disrupting the development of brain architecture. Toxic stress can include abuse and neglect and may result in serious mental and physical health problems beyond childhood.

You’ll also discover how to make it work better, so you can use less and get more effects And I’ll also reveal the #1 natural alternative to Cialis. A new discovery that actually works the same way as Cialis and similar drugs, but without any of the negatives. No drugs or diets. So if you want to improve your sex drive, optimize your hormones and increase blood flow for bigger, harder and fuller erections - so you can help avoid, reverse and fix “erectile problems”, then please watch this entire video. The future of your “sexual performance” could depend on it! Interesting History Let’s begin with a quick history about Cialis. First, this is a PDE5 inhibitor designed to treat erectile dysfunction. It’s also used to treat high blood pressure (pulmonary arterial hypertension) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). What interesting is that this is the 3rd PDE5 drug. Viagra was the 1st and Levitra was the 2nd. The main differences in these 3 drugs is that: Viagra has the shortest half life of 4 hours and needs to be taken on an empty stomach Levitra is a little longer with a 5 hour half-life. It’s more potent than Viagra, so a lower dosage is needed. Cialis is the longest, with an 18 hour half-life and you can take it with food, even though empty stomach is better. Levitra never gained much popularity… It’s very similar to Viagra, but milder in side-effects - but that’s only because a lower dosage is used.. However, when it comes the user preference, Cialis is a big winner simply because you don’t have to time it right before sex. You can take it in the morning and it’s in your system for a couple of days. So, you’re ready to go the entire time. However, keep in mind that Cialis is also SLOW to act and it does take a couple of hours to kick in, while Viagra takes only about 20-30 minutes. Sex Is Expensive Now, what’s crazy is that Cialis costs about $60 a pill. But hey, that’s cheaper than Viagra’s almost $75 a pill price.1.2 But, I get it. When a man can’t perform, he’ll do almost anything to make “it” work. And yes, there are generic versions you can buy overseas which costs less, but they are typically under dosed or faked. You could lose your money and never get your order. You’re also at risk with legal issues with the DEA, Customs, FDA and so forth. But, who cares… anything to get an erection, right?... The Side-Effects Unfortunately, Cialis has bunch of negative side-effects… similar to Viagra, such as: Headaches Vision problems Insomnia Back pain Sinus and nose problems Nausea and stomach issues Blood pressure issues Heart and stroke problems Liver and kidney issues But for sex, I think most guys will put up with these side-effects. … at least temporarily. Unfortunately, there are 3 main problems with Cialis and how well it works or doesn’t work Cialis doesn’t work in about 40-50% of users… and I’ll tell you why in a minute and how this can be fixed.7 … Sadly, it works even LESS in men with diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol or high blood pressure Cialis doesn’t work as well in “older” men over the age of 40. Ironically, it works better and has less side-effects in younger guys who don’t really need it. I’ll also tell you how this can be fixed in a minute. Your body adapts to Cialis and it doesn’t work as well over time. The more you use it, the less it works. So if you’re a younger guy using it now, you’re going to have a big problem later on in life. Unfortunately, there is no “fix” for this, other than to NOT use it for a few weeks or months and let your “receptors” upgrade. ======================================== ======================================== Thank you for watching. Why good leaders make you feel safe | Simon Sinek
What makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests, it's someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. Watch until the end before commenting, this video does have a happy ending. A video about gender and sex differences in sports. I think it's helpful to think about hormones levels the same as height. If you're tall or short, you can't really change that, you just go with it. Just accept it and move on. How Do Food Comas Work?
What's the science behind food comas? Why are they associated with Thanksgiving? Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/innovation/edible-innovations/question519.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/xm8gOj Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/s481R2 Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com Ben Franklin once said, “Eat not to dullness, drink not to elevation.” The American Founding Fathers are frequently a confounding lot, but this one seems pretty straightforward: Ben Franklin was suggesting it’s best not to get wasted when you drink and not to eat until you enter a food coma. Although he was aware of its existence, Ben Franklin could no more explain the food coma than modern science can today. It’s a mystery of biology. But this hasn’t stopped scientists from slapping a clinical term on it: postprandium somnolence. Post meaning “after” and “prandium” from the Latin for luncheon. It describes the sensation of getting sleepy after a big meal. But food comas are counterintuitive. After we stuff our stomachs with lots of calories, we should have an increase in energy, not a sudden decrease. And, following this logic, the more we eat, the more energetic we should be, no? Mysterious indeed. One food coma hypotheses is that the introduction of lots of food to the gut causes the body to redirect blood there to aid in digestion. Some of this redirected blood is taken from the brain, which leaves the human who’s recently eaten a big meal in a stupor. Sounds logical and hilarious, but, unfortunately, it’s wrong. Because it’s so important (and, possibly, because it’s the organ in charge of directing blood flow) the brain receives a steady supply of blood to meet its energy demands. While it is true that your gut receives more blood flow to aid in digestion, it comes from the skeletal muscles, not the brain. How about another one? The tryptophan myth. This one is commonly believed because so many people experience the food coma on Thanksgiving, and turkey – which contains lots of tryptophan – is a common feature of the Thanksgiving meals that lead to food comas. Tryptophan is an amino acid that is a precursor to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that is a precursor to melatonin, which is a hormone that aids in sleep. The logic goes that when eating a big turkey dinner, we eat a lot of tryptophan, which is ultimately converted to melatonin; hence the food coma. The problem with this hypothesis is that there’s more tryptophan in lots of other foods, like cheddar cheese, bacon, salmon and chicken that we don’t normally associate with food comas. Researchers believe that we’d have to ingest tryptophan alone on an empty stomach to notice any effect. When we eat it in food, it enters competition with all of the other fats, proteins and amino acids in food. So less of it gets absorbed and converted into melatonin. BUT! There is some science behind the Thanksgiving food coma. It turns out that when we eat lots of carbohydrates – like we do on Thanksgiving – the insulin released causes other proteins and amino acids to be absorbed by the muscles, but leaves the tryptophan untouched and in greater concentrations in the blood. This could ultimately produce a postprandium somnolent effect. And then there’s orexin. One of this neurotransmitter’s roles is to promote wakefulness and when the neurons that make it are turned off, we get drowsy. A 2006 study found that even modest increases in blood glucose – which rises when we eat – can lead to a decrease in orexin. So perhaps this is the key to food comas. For the time being, though, the jury is still out: We know food comas happen, we just don’t know how. So let’s order some wings and pizza and do some more science! What Gall! The Crazy Cribs of Parasitic Wasps | Deep Look
Plenty of animals build their homes in oak trees. But some very teeny, tricky wasps make the tree do all the work. And each miniature mansion the trees build for the wasps' larvae is weirder and more flamboyant than the next. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK: a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe and meet extraordinary new friends. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. * NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! * “What nerve!” you might say. What… gall! And you’d be right. The wasps are called gall-inducers. ---+ What do oak galls look like? If you’ve ever spent a Summer or Fall around oak trees – such as the stalwart Valley Oak – Quercus lobata, or the stately Blue Oak, Quercus douglasii – you may be familiar with the large, vaguely fruity-looking objects clinging to the branches and leaves. Commonly called oak apples, these growths are the last thing you’d want to put in your mouth. They are intensely bitter, loaded with tannin compounds – the same compounds that in modest amounts give red wine its pleasant dryness, and tea its refreshing earthy tang. That said, the oak apple’s powerful astringency has been prized for millennia. Tanning leather, making ink or dye, and cleaning wounds have been but a few of the gall’s historical uses. But on closer inspection of these oaks – and many other plants and trees such as willows, alders, manzanitas, or pines – you can find a rogue’s gallery of smaller galls. Carefully peeking under leaves, along the stems and branches, or around the flower buds and acorns will likely lead you to unexpected finds. Smooth ones. Spiky ones. Long skinny ones, flat ones, lumpy, boxy ones. From the size of a golf ball down to that of a poppy seed. These structures wear shades of yellow, green, brown, purple, pink and red – and sometimes all of the above. A single tree may be host to dozens of types of gall, each one caused by a specific organism. And their shapes range from the sublime to the downright creepy. One tree may be encrusted with them, like a Christmas tree laden with ornaments and tinsel; and the next tree over may be almost completely free of galls. Why? It’s a mystery. ---+ How do oak galls form? Galls are generally formed when an insect, or its larvae, introduce chemicals into a specific location, to push the plant’s growth hormones into overdrive. This can result in a great profusion of normal cells, increased size of existing cells, or the alteration of entire plant structures into new, alien forms. Lots of creatures cause them; midges, mites, aphids, flies, even bacteria and viruses. But the undisputed champs are a big family of little wasps called Cynipids– rarely exceeding the size of a mosquito, a quarter of an inch in length. “These tiny wasps cannot sting,” says Dr. Kathy Schick, Assistant Specialist/Curatorial Assistant at the Essig Museum of Entomology at UC Berkeley. “Gall-inducers are fascinating in that they are very specialized to their organ of the host plant.” ---+ What are oak galls? These wasp houses are not homes exactly, but more akin to nurseries. The galls serve as an ideal environment for wasp larvae, whether it is a single offspring, or dozens. The tree is tricked into generating outsize amounts of soft, pillowy tissue inside each gall, on which the larvae gladly gorge themselves as they grow. Despite the fact that smoking is forbidden in almost every airline in the world, airplanes still have ashtrays in them because it is required by the FAA. Even though smoking is banned and airplanes are fitted with smoke alarms, the FAA knew that some people would still smoke. So providing a place for people to safely dispose of their cigarettes was deemed too important for safety reasons. http://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/25.853 http://www.flightglobal.com/FlightPDFArchive/1976/1976%20-%200657.PDF --------------- Why Does Rubbing Alcohol on Cuts Makes Them Burn? This happens because alcohol directly affects the VR1 receptors in the skin, these receptors are responsible for sensing heat, and alcohol lowers the threshold of these receptors, so as a result, they start thinking that the body is getting burned and starts transmitting pain signals to the brain. http://chemistry.about.com/od/medicalhealth/a/Why-Does-Alcohol-Burn-On-A-Cut-Or-Wound.htm http://www.nature.com/neuro/journal/v5/n6/abs/nn852.html --------------- Why Dreams are Hard to Remember?* During REM sleep, where most dreaming takes place, the brain prevents anything from getting into the long-term memory. Also, the hormone Norepinephrine's levels drop during REM sleep, which is a hormone that plays a key role in creating new memories. And another factor that contributes to the poor recall of dreams is that during REM sleep, neurons from the hippocampus may not fire as often as they do at other times. Which is why dreams quickly fade after waking up. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-do-memories-of-vivid-dreams/ http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090225132249.htm --------------- Why Do People Sneeze When Looking At A Bright Light? While the exact reason for why third of the population experiences Photic sneeze reflex is still not well understood. The most wildly accepted theory is that the optic nerve that senses light is located right next to the trigeminal nerve that controls sneezing. When the optic nerve sends electrical impulses to the brain, the signal triggers the trigeminal nerve, confusing the brain into thinking the nose is irritated and a sneeze is necessary http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/looking-at-the-sun-can-trigger-a-sneeze/ http://www.livescience.com/32307-why-do-bright-lights-make-me-sneeze.html http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8108024 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photic_sneeze_reflex --------------- Why Do Stores Blast Air at Entrances? The lines and numbers you find on just about every product you buy are called UPC, and they're designed to speed up the checkout process. The first six digits serve as an identification of the manufacturer, the next five digits are the item number, and the last digit is a "Check Digit" that lets scanners know whether they've read the code correctly or not. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/19/everyday-things-explained_n_4943908.html http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/gadgets/high-tech-gadgets/upc.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Product_Code --------------- Music: Transcendence By TimMcMorris - http://audiojungle.net/item/transcendence/180570 ---------------

Sports & steroids
There are many misunderstandings about the use of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), with claims that it can cause cancer, carpal tunnel syndrome and water retention. Dr Goldman gets to the bottom of these claims and outlines the benefits of correctly prescribed levels of HGH. The confusion between HGH and anabolic steroids and how sport testing is carried out is also cleared up, finishing with a discussion of what methods are next on the horizon for sports cheats.

The Skeletal System: Crash Course A&P #19
Today Hank explains the skeletal system and why astronauts Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko are out in space studying it. He talks about the anatomy of the skeletal system, including the flat, short, and irregular bones, and their individual arrangements of compact and spongy bone. He'll also cover the microanatomy of bones, particularly the osteons and their inner lamella. And finally he will introduce the process of bone remodeling, which is carried out by crews of osteocytes, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts. 3. Toxic Stress Derails Healthy Development
Learning how to cope with adversity is an important part of healthy development. While moderate, short-lived stress responses in the body can promote growth, toxic stress is the strong, unrelieved activation of the body's stress management system in the absence of protective adult support. Without caring adults to buffer children, the unrelenting stress caused by extreme poverty, neglect, abuse, or severe maternal depression can weaken the architecture of the developing brain, with long-term consequences for learning, behavior, and both physical and mental health. This video is part three of a three-part series titled "Three Core Concepts in Early Development" from the Center and the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child. The series depicts how advances in neuroscience, molecular biology, and genomics now give us a much better understanding of how early experiences are built into our bodies and brains, for better or for worse. Healthy development in the early years provides the building blocks for educational achievement, economic productivity, responsible citizenship, lifelong health, strong communities, and successful parenting of the next generation. Dr. Rau: Treating Tick-Borne and Chronic Infectious Diseases with Biological Medicine
http://www.biologicalmedicinenetwork.org Lyme and tick-borne diseases are an escalating public health issue that may be on track to be the next epidemic. In the last 5-8 years, we have seen an enormous increase of Lyme Disease patients, especially on the East Coast. What aggravates this disease is that the symptoms expressed vary from person to person and the lab diagnoses are too often not accurate. Dr. Thomas Rau and the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland have successfully treated many chronic and sick Lyme patients with biological medicine. Interestingly, all severely ill Lyme patients had co-infections and other disabling factors, which were the underlying causes for their severe disorder. These underlying causes include: - Heavy metal and other toxic loads, mainly neuro-toxins - Severe dysbiosis and intestinal weaknesses, which leads to a break down in the immune system - Chronic viral loads, mainly neurotropic slow acting viruses and remainders of immunizations - Side-effects from long term antibiotics, including the presence of cell wall deficient bacteria, which themselves cause chronic problems - Genetic lack of detoxification and/or anti-oxidant quelling capacity - Severe lack of certain amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids, due to poor nutrition or metabolic weaknesses. Dr. Rau has treated many patients, all without antibiotics, but with detoxification protocols, like up building the immune system, inner organs and hormonal and adrenal system, finding and eliminating neuro- and lymphtropic viruses and integrating Live Cell Therapies, exclusively used at the Paracelsus Clinic in Lustmühle, Switzerland. The success rate of the treatment has been very high if done very intensively for 2-4 weeks and continued at home for several months. It is a very individualized program which always has to integrate a combination of different treatment modalities.

5 Dangerous Mistakes of Using Nutritional Supplements (Part 2)
This lecture is a continuation on the safe use of nutritional supplements by way of balancing your body chemistry. CLICK Here for more info: http://mdwellnessmd.com/about-us/ How do we facilitate the journey to long lasting health and well-being? We first have to identify those factors in the patient’s internal environment (dietary practices, genetic predispositions, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic imbalances) and external environment (biotoxin exposure like molds, hidden infections or heavy metals) that may be underlying causes of medical issues. The next priority is to administer nutritional supplements that are carefully chosen (not to treat symptoms) but to help shift the body back towards a balanced state. The biggest mistake is thinking that self-medicating any form of nutrients or over the counter Vitamins will lead to healthy results. Bone Broth Chicken instructions (Cutting Up a Whole Chicken)
Is Bone Broth the new Green Juice? • Bone Broth is typically made with bones and can contain a small amount of meat adhering to the bones. As with stock, bones are typically roasted first to improve the flavor of the bone broth. Bone broths are typically simmered for a very long period of time (often in excess of 24 hours). This long cooking time helps to remove as many minerals and nutrients as possible from the bones. At the end of cooking, so many minerals have leached from the bones and into the broth that the bones crumble when pressed lightly between your thumb and forefinger. 1. Heal and seal your gut. a cup a day works miracles for leaky gut syndrome. The gelatin in the bone broth (found in the knuckles, feet, and other joints) helps seal up holes in intestines. Most People Have Some Degree of Gut Dysfunction These Days... Leaky gut is the root of many allergies and autoimmune disorders for example. When combined with toxic overload, you have a perfect storm that can lead to neurological disorders like autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities. 2. Protect your joints. Taking glucosamine supplements to help with joint pain has been common knowledge for years, but it turns out that bone broth has glucosamine too. But unlike pills, the broth also includes a host of other goodies that help keep your joints happy, healthy, and pain-free. The chondroitin sulfate in bone broth has been shown to help prevent osteoarthritis. 3. Look younger. Bone broth is a rich source of collagen. You can find collagen in all kinds of “plumping” products these days, but why stick it on the outside when you can drink it? Not only is drinking it cheaper, but it can make your skin, hair, and nails look just as radiant. 4. Sleep better, and feel better. The glycine in bone broth has been shown in several studies to help people sleep better and improve memory. 5. Immune support. Bone Broth is considered a “superfood” thanks to the high concentration of minerals. The bone marrow can help strengthen your immune system. A Harvard study even showed that some people with auto-immune disorders experienced a relief of symptoms when drinking bone broth, with some achieving a complete remission! 6. Stronger bones. The phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium in the bones seeps out into the broth leaving you with the essential building blocks for healthy bones. 7. It’s very economical! What else were you going to do with those chicken carcasses, soup bones, and veggies going bad in your fridge? Bone Broth Helps Get the Toxins Out. The liver is the master organ of detoxification. Unfortunately, it was never intended to withstand the very toxic, chemical nature of today’s world. The liver is certainly under assault on a daily basis, and its capacity to detoxify is limited by the availability of the amino acid glycine. Guess where you can get tons of glycine from? Bone broth, Boo Yah! Bone Broth Reduces Your Need for Meat and Protein. This is pretty darn interesting. In her fantastic Real Food Summit (RFS) presentation, Sarah Pope revealed that studies conducted in the 1800s demonstrated that when there is plenty of gelatin in the diet, the body’s need for protein from meat sources can be reduced by as much as fifty-percent! We all know that purchasing quality meats can be hard on the wallet. The good news is that you can make bone broth for dirt cheap and thus save money on meat. Necessary Amino Acids Broth is an excellent source of several essential amino acids that are often difficult to get from diet alone: • Proline: A precursor for hydroxyproline, which the body uses to make collagen, proline helps the body break down proteins and helps improve skin elasticity and smoothness (and avoiding wrinkles). It is often recommended for its benefits to the heart, including keeping arteries from stiffening. • Glycine: Necessary for DNA and RNA synthesis and digestive health. It is used for the production of glutathione, for blood sugar regulation and digestion (though bile salt regulation). “Glycine also enhances muscle repair/growth by increasing levels of creatine and regulating Human Growth Hormone secretion from the pituitary gland.” • Arginine: Helpful for proper kidney function, wound healing and proper kidney function. There is some evidence that arginine is helpful in keeping the arteries supple and improving heart health. • Glutamine: Bone broth is an excellent source of glutamine How to Use Broth Broth is extremely versatile and many chefs use it as a base for soups, gravies, sauces and more. Here are some great ways to use broth: • As a base for soups and stews • In a mug by itself as a warm drink • As a base for gravy and sauce • Use it to cook veggies in for extra nutrients • Dehydrate to make your own bouillon powder
