Can You Take Birth Control? | Epilepsy
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502037-Can-You-Take-Birth-Control-Epilepsy So there is an increased risk of seizures occurring around women's ovulation and their menstruation. At the same time people need to be put on birth control of some form so that they are minimizing the risk of pregnancy and the risk to the fetus. Now, birth control is safe, with epilepsy and with the anti-epileptic medications, but certain kinds are safer than others. So it's important to have a conversation with the practitioners taking care of you for your epilepsy as well as the ob/gyn doctors that are prescribing the birth control pills about wich medications are the best mix for your anit-siezure medications and your birth control. So birth control pills that are the least likely to interfere with the epilepsy medications are the ones that have high progestin and low estrogen. The other forms of contraceptions that are useful are the depro prevera, which is the injection, IUDs are perfectly safe, people should always be using condoms, and there are a variety of things that they can use without using birth control pills. So it's important to have a conversation. The ob/gyn should also be having a conversation with the person who is managing your epilepsy care.

Caring for women with epilepsy
Epilepsy affects approximately 1 percent of the population. In the United States, that adds up to about 3 million people. Half of those are women, and of those about 24,000 give birth each year. Studies show that most healthcare professionals do not know that sex hormones can affect seizures in women, and many could not report which seizure medications can cause contraceptive failure. UC Irvine Health epileptologist Mona Sazgar, MD, explains how the hormones can affect women with epilepsy, and what women and healthcare providers should know about seizure medications, pregnancy, birth control and more. Connection between Hormones & Seizures | Epilepsy
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502029-Connection-between-Hormones-and-Seizures-Epilepsy Hormones play an important role in seizures and epilepsy. I guess the number one area being puberty, because when we see rapid puberty development in teenagers, we frequently see an outburst of seizures going on. Girls and women often have more seizures according to their menstrual cycle, so at the time of ovulation and at the time of menstruation they're more prone to have seizures. Because estrogen is pro-convulsive and Progesterone is somewhat protective and anti-convulsive. Now we've heard a lot of times parents will say to us, 'well is there some way to control the hormones, to help decrease the seizures?' What's your thought about that? What we do is we can use birth control pills to stop ovulation and to regulate the periods so that there's less seizures around that, but you have to be careful which birth control pills you're using. There's no real way of stopping puberty. There's no real way of stopping menstruation. Although there are long-acting oral contraceptives you can use. And then there are certain medications that we can use right around the time of her period to decrease the risk of seizures. So, basically, what we see is that, we know that certain patients are very sensitive to hormones, so that during puberty there can be an outburst of seizures. Uh, we know that during menstrual cycles and ovulation that can trigger them off. There are certain medications that you can discuss with your doctor that might be preventative that you can use right before ovulation or menstrual cycle that might be helpful, and so that would be an important conversation. Even using Progesterone, there are medications called Diamox, or even just adjusting the anti-seizure medication might be somewhat protective during that time. So, it's important to be aware of these transitions and aware that hormones can make a big difference.

What Is Trileptal? | Epilepsy
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502066-What-Is-Trileptal-Epilepsy A: Trileptal, otherwise known as oxcarbazepine is one of the newer anti-seizure medications. It's based off an old medication, carbamazepine or Tegretol, as you probably heard in the past. It's another fast sodium channel drug and very good for seizures with partial-complex seizures. B: Seizures that start in one area of the brain and spread. It's well tolerated with fewer side effects than Tegretol or Carbatrol, which it's derived from. The biggest issue with that, the biggest side effect is, you can get some drowsiness when you start taking it. That usually goes away within a week or so. B: You start the dose slowly and gradually increase it so there are fewer side effects. There is a risk of an allergic reaction, as there is with any medication. This presents, usually, as a red rash all over the trunk and chest. If that happens, just stop the medication. Take Benadryl, and then, slowly increase it again. There is the most sodium issues, but more in adults than in children. A: It's also called an enzyme inducer. You have to watch what medications you mix this with, because it could affect how the other medications perform. When you start the medication, you might have to increase the dose after a few weeks, to adjust for how the liver is metabolizing it. It's a medication that you need to watch what you're using it with, and watch those rare side affects. B: It can also decrease the efficacy of birth control pills. You need to be careful if you're on birth control pills, that you use some other means of contraception. A: Trileptal or oxcarbazepine is a first line indicated drug, very good for partial-complex seizures, not to be used in generalized epilepsy, with very few side effects and very well tolerated.

What Is Keppra? | Epilepsy
Watch more Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/502057-What-Is-Keppra-Epilepsy Keppra or levetiracetam is one of the biggest medications used to control epilepsy. Its one of the newer ones that came out. It's available by pill or intravenously. It works on what's called an SP2 receptor. So its different than some of the other anti-epileptics and its good for both partial complex seizures as well as generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It's usually very well tolerated. It also comes in a liquid formulation which is great for kids. It can be iv loaded which means if somebody's having a seizure in the emergency room or in the hospital it can be given intravenously to stop the seizure. The biggest side effects are, it makes some people, kinda irritable and nasty. And we deal with that by giving them a B6 vitamin at the same time that we start the keppra. Sometimes you can get a little bit of somnamolism and a little bit of somnambulism being sleepy. But the nice part is it doesn't interact with other drugs. So it has very little drugs to drug interaction. No liver issues, no other blood toxicities. So it's a clean medication, treats multiple seizure types. You don't need to monitor blood levels and it's actually safe in pregnancy, which is another big plus. And it doesn't interfere with oral contraceptives.

Can You Take Prescriptions? | Boot Camp
Watch more Boot Camp: Learn about Basic Training videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/498618-Can-You-Take-Prescriptions-Boot-Camp "Welcome to the first and only episode of ""What About My Prescription?"". I'm your host Sgt. Volkin, and in this episode I'll be fielding questions from a fake audience today. Alright, thank you very much. So, what will happen if you bring your prescription medicines to Basic Training? Very easy answer. It's going to be taken away from you. If you require medication you most likely won't get passed MEPS, or the Medical Entrance Processing Station. Once you're at Basic Training and you need to obtain medicine, you can go to Sick Hall and get it there. Sick Hall's not that much fun though. If the medication is strong enough that you can overdose, you're going to have to take the medication with your Drill Sargeant, and that usually comes with contingencies like doing push-ups so that's not fun. So, let's go ahead and go to the questions from our fake audience. Question number one: ""Can I bring my birth control with me to Basic Training""? The answer is 'No' Question number two: ""Can I bring my asthma inhaler?"" The answer is 'No' In fact, you can't even get into the military with asthma, so the answer is still 'No'. Question number three: ""Can I bring my heartburn pills?"" The answer is 'No'. Another question from our fake audience is ""Can I bring my heart-worm medication?"" Not unless you're a canine and if you're a canine, you can't get into the military, so the answer is 'No'. Another question: ""Can I bring my Viagra?"" 'No', not sure why you're going to want to bring that to Basic Training anyway. Thank you for joining me on the series premier and the final episode of ""What About My Prescription?"""

Does contraceptive pill decrease chances of pregnancy? - Dr. Shailaja N
As long as you are on microgynon, oral contraceptive pill, pregnancy is not possible to achieve. When you stop the microgynon, the return of fertility is immediate because the ovulation returns immediately. Sometimes very rarely it can cause post pill amenorrhea because there will not be any menses for months together. This is not harmful, resolves spontaneously, but fertility is a question mark there. With microgynon, in the first few months there is a chance of multiple pregnancy because there is rebound in the hormones in the body. But you need not get worried. You can try for conception immediately after stopping the microgynon.

The Health Benefits And The Risks Of Taking Fish Oil And Omega-3 Supplements
The Health Benefits And The Risks Of Taking Fish Oil And Omega-3 Supplements Dietitians and doctors assert in unison that omega 3 fatty acids are essential nutrients, which help our heart, brain, muscle and joints to stay healthy. These elements could not be produced by your body. So it's very important to get them from foods. helps women achieve their body goals with ease and efficiency by helping to choose proper meal plans and effective workouts. Start using our app and you will see good results in a short time. Fish oil was found to be the richest source of omega 3s. It contains two main types of these substances. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) takes part in formation of blood clotting elements and in regulation of inflammatory processes. Docosahexaenoic acid is an important part of cerebral cortex, sperm, heart and eye retina. It can be also found in breast milk. Scientists say that this helps babies to grow and develop normally. Several studies found that fish oil can help normalize blood pressure and reduce risks of heart-related problems. If your blood test has shown that you have too much triglycerides and “bad” LDL cholesterol, your doctor may recommend taking more omega 3 acids to restore balance. If you are one of those, who experience morning stiffness and tenderness in the joints because of rheumatoid arthritis, you may be glad to hear that fish oil can relieve this discomfort. It's not uncommon that women feel extremely depressed after carrying pregnancy and giving a birth. To prevent this problem, add oily fish, chia seeds, basil, walnuts and flax seeds to your daily menu. One research has found that consuming low doses of fish oil regularly helps patients with epilepsy to decrease frequency and duration of seizure attacks. There is controversial evidence about effectiveness of omega 3 fatty acids in improving memory and slowing down progression of Alzheimer's disease. You may think that the more omega 3s you take, the more benefits your body will get. But that's not really true. People often buy fish oil-contained capsules and pills to maintain health and prevent possible diseases. Medical specialists say that there is no reason to take fish oil or omega 3 supplements, if you do not have doctor's prescription. Even though these supplements were recognized to be generally safe, they can nevertheless increase risks of bleeding (especially if you take blood thinners) and cause digestive problems (nausea, bad breath, indigestion), if taken in too high amounts. It's worth knowing that people, who are allergic to fish and shellfish, might have reaction to supplements. It's also important that omega 3 supplements may interfere with your daily medications, including blood pressure pills, contraceptives, anticoagulants and weight-loss drugs. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Remember this and buy supplements only in reputable and safe places. The best idea is to get omega 3s from foods. BetterMe App helps you increase your self-esteem and achieve your personal goals by opening the doors to the world of fitness and healthy lifestyle. Try it now to see the best version of yourself as soon as possible. The American Heart Association accepts shrimp, tuna, salmon and catfish as the best omega 3-sources. Consumption of shark, tilefish, swordfish and king mackerel should be limited because of high mercury content. There are some good news for vegetarians. It's possible to meet body's needs for omega 3 fatty acids, eating hemp seeds, flax, nuts, leafy greens and dried tarragon. The BetterMe Team wants you and those close to you to live a healthy, happy life! CBD Oil Side Effects Warning (Do Not Buy CBD Until You See This)
3 simple tips to follow before buying: 1. Always check the CBD purity, it should be 50% and more. 2. Choose products made in the US or Canada. Due to strict regulations this is your quality guarantee. 3. Do not expect to purchase quality and safe to use CBD oil for pennies. High quality CBD oil should cost at least $45-$50. Choose another product if that amount puts you into an uncomfortable situation financially. Brands that I trust and recommend: 1. Verified CBD Oil (http://verifiedcbd.com). This is probably the oldest brand of CBD I know. Tons of success stories and quality I have tested myself - these are the reasons I have been recommending this brand to my friends and family for years. The only downside is that due to their recent TV "fame" they are often out of stock and can be hard to get. Official website: http://verifiedcbd.com Benefits and Side Effects of CBD Oil Cannabidiol, or CBD as it is commonly known, is a very interesting chemical. And it is responsible for many people changing their views on marijuana use for medicinal purposes. While everyone has heard of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), not many are aware of CBD. The two chemicals are both contained in marijuana, but they serve very different purposes. While the THC in marijuana is will get you high, CBD is a chemical with many benefits from a medicinal point of view - and it does not have the same side effects on the body as THC. What are the Health Benefits of CBD Oil? The ingredient CBD has been used for many years to make several products. One of these products is CBD oil. According to many studies which have carried out on this product, there are many different health benefits associated with it. First and foremost, it can help people who are experiencing excessive nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy or some other type of medical treatment. It is also great at reducing the seizures some people get on a regular basis. Another benefit of CBD oil is how it helps combat inflammation and neuro-degenerative disorders. It is also great for anxiety and depression sufferers. So if you are suffering from one of these conditions, you may want to talk to your physician about the possibility of getting on CBD oil for a few months. CBD oil also contain various o nutrients like carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins such as vitamin B1, B2, B6, D and E, trace minerals such as calcium, iron zinc, magnesium potassium, and several other compounds required by the human body for healthy functioning, such as chlorophyll, carotene, ketones, glycosides, nitrogen-based compounds, etc.. Unlike THC, CBD oil doesn't make you high. The CBD in these this product will not make you feel the same as the THC does. This is because THC is a psychoactive chemical whereas CBD is not. It does not act in the same manner when it comes into contact with your brain's pathways. It does not interfere with your psychological or psychomotor functions either. For those who want a simpler explanation: CBD oil is 100% safe and won't get you high! Are there Any Side Effects of CBD Oil? Whereas CBD oil has been proven safe for human consumption, some researches done on it have identified a possibility of side effects in patients taking the oil. One study which was published in 1886 in the International Journal of Neuroscience showed that CBD oil could cause some mild side effects in patients with dystonia. These side effects include dry mouth, hypotension, sedation, psychomotor slowing, and lightheadedness. However, there are no side effects which have been reported when CBD is taken in high doses. As you can see, you should not worry when taking CBD oil as its side effects are very mild. Buy CBD oil today and experience the many benefits associated with it. 1. How to recollect the ADVERSE effects of VALPROATE ? 2. Mnemonics for ADVERSE effects of VALPROATE . Valproic acid affects chemicals in the body that may be involved in causing seizures. Valproic acid is used to treat various types of seizure disorders. Valproic acid is sometimes used together with other seizure medications. Valproic acid is also used to treat manic episodes related to bipolar disorder (manic depression), and to prevent migraine headaches. Valproic acid may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. Do not use valproic acid to prevent migraine headaches if you are pregnant. If you take valproic acid for seizures or manic episodes: Do not start or stop taking the medicine during pregnancy without your doctor's advice. You should not use valproic acid if you have liver disease, a urea cycle disorder, or a genetic disorder such as Alpers' disease or Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome (especially in a child younger than 2 years old). Valproic acid can cause liver failure that may be fatal, especially in children under age 2 and in people with liver problems caused by a genetic mitochondrial (MYE-toe-KON-dree-al) disorder. Call your doctor at once if the person taking this medicine has signs of liver or pancreas problems, such as: loss of appetite, upper stomach pain (that may spread to your back), ongoing nausea or vomiting, dark urine, swelling in the face, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). You should not use valproic acid if you are allergic to it, or if you have: liver disease;a urea cycle disorder; ora genetic mitochondrial (MYE-toe-KON-dree-al) disorder such as Alpers' disease or Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome, especially in a child younger than 2 years old. Valproic acid can cause liver failure that may be fatal, especially in children under age 2 and in people with liver problems caused by a genetic mitochondrial disorder. To make sure valproic acid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver problems caused by a genetic mitochondrial disorder;a history of depression, mental illness, or suicidal thoughts or actions;a family history of a urea cycle disorder or infant deaths with unknown cause; orHIV or CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection. Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking valproic acid. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using this medicine. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Do not use valproic acid to prevent migraine headaches if you are pregnant. If you take valproic acid for seizures or manic episodes: This medicine can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects, and may affect cognitive ability (reasoning, intelligence, problem-solving) later in the child's life. However, having a seizure during pregnancy could harm both the mother and the baby. Do not start or stop taking valproic acid during pregnancy without your doctor's advice. Use effective birth control while using valproic acid, and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. Tell your doctor if you start or stop using hormonal contraception that contains estrogen (birth control pills, injections, implants, skin patches, and vaginal rings). Estrogen can interact with valproic acid and make it less effective in preventing seizures. Seizure control is very important during pregnancy. The benefit of preventing seizures may outweigh any risks posed by taking valproic acid. There may be other seizure medications that can be more safely used during pregnancy
What are the differences between a birth control implant and IUD?
You asked a question about different forms of birth control like an implant versus an IUD. The implanted form of birth control is called Implanon and it's inserted in the upper arm and is usually good for up to three years. An IUD goes up inside and they both work differently. They administer hormone to a woman to help prevent pregnancy but the method in which it does it is very different. There are risks to both. There are risks to all forms of birth control. I'm going to read you a few of the risks associated with the implant and a few of the risks associated with the IUD but ultimately it would be best if you talk to your doctor and they can counsel with you about your health history and your situation and help you decide which form of contraception is best for you. Here are some of the side effects associated with the implant which is called Implanon. Headaches affect about 25% of people and more than 10% of women who have the implant experience acne, irregular bleeding, weight gain, and abdominal pain. Affecting less than 10% of women who have the implant: dizziness, depression, nausea, and back pain. And in 1% of cases it can cause hair loss, hypertension, heart attack, stroke, migraines, or seizures. Obviously those are severe side effects but those side effects can be associated with many different forms of contraception. Some of the risks of an IUD are the same. Greater than 5% of women with an IUD will experience headaches, depression, acne, bleeding irregularity, abdominal pain and less than 5% of people who have IUDs will experience back pain, high blood pressure, decreased libido, nausea, and weight gain. Again, just talk to your doctor and they can help talk to you about which form would be best for you because there are advantages and disadvantages to both not only with the risks but also with the timing of things and IUDs are recommended for some people and not others, same with implants. Talk to your doctor and they can help you decide. If you have any other questions for me feel free to ask them on our Facebook page and recommend us to your friends and family too.
