10 Worst Cities for Spring Allergies

Did Your City Make the List? If you have asthma, where you live makes a difference. High pollen counts and smog lead to flare-ups, and controlling symptoms can be tricky if your area is short on doctors. Every year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) looks at these and other medical and environmental factors, then ranks the 100 hardest places in the U.S. for people with asthma. Here are 2015’s top “Asthma Capitals.” Chicago Air quality in Chi-town is poor, thanks to many days of high soot and smog levels. The city has an above-average number of ER visits and deaths because of asthma. Also, 38% of people in the region are uninsured, making it hard for them to control their symptoms or afford medicine. Some asthma inhalers cost close to $800 a month. New Orleans Like other cities on the list, poverty and lack of health insurance factor into NOLA’s higher-than-average death rate due to asthma. But the city’s hot, humid weather also makes breathing harder. Allergens in the environment are a problem here, too. The Big Easy has a high pollen score, and 2005’s Hurricane Katrina left an unhealthy legacy of indoor mold. Both can make breathing easy a serious struggle. Chattanooga, TN Air quality isn’t the problem here. In the past year, Chattanooga has slashed pollution and is now considered one of the nation’s cleanest cities. Still, its nonsmoking laws are weak. Twenty percent of adults and 17% of high school students are smokers. A low number of asthma specialists in the area means ER visits are high. Knoxville, TN The AAFA also lists Knoxville as one of the worst for spring allergies, thanks to high levels of tree and grass pollen. Both can cause asthma symptoms to flare. But that might not be the only reason for a higher-than-average use of asthma medicines here. Studies show a link between weight gain and asthma, and in 2010, nearly two-thirds of people living here were overweight or obese. Augusta, GA Located 150 miles from Atlanta, the “Garden City of the South” is the second largest and second oldest city in Georgia. It’s also the worst in the state for people with asthma. In just 2 years, nearly a dozen children in and around Augusta died from the condition. The area has a high pollen count, and nonsmoking laws also aren’t up to snuff. An effort to ban smoking from bars and public places has failed three times in recent years. Oklahoma City As many as 23% of Sooners living in Oklahoma County have no health insurance. That, along with a serious lack of asthma specialists in the area, can make it hard for people to get the medical care they need. It doesn’t help that Oklahoma City is ranked 15th out of 220 cities for high ozone days. Ozone, which is more common on hot, humid days, can make asthma symptoms worse. Detroit The Motor City has a better-than-average pollen count, and its public smoking laws are on par with the rest of the U.S. Still, asthma rates here are 50% higher than the rest of Michigan. Many residents use quick-relief asthma inhalers, which means their disease isn’t well-controlled. While the air is a risk factor, some experts believe a bigger problem is that many residents are poor and uninsured. Philadelphia Emergency room visits for asthma in the City of Brotherly Love are higher than average. The disease sends more than 16,000 kids to the ER each year. Since many who have the condition here live in low-income neighborhoods, a Community Asthma Prevention Program offers free home visits to explain how to control triggers like house dust and animal dander. Up to 60% of residents with asthma are also allergic to cockroaches. Richmond, VA With its rich Civil War history, this town is popular with vacationers. But it’s not such a great place to live if you have asthma. Smog is a problem, especially in the hot, humid summer months. The city also has higher-than-average rates of people living in poverty and without insurance. They’re more likely to have asthma in part because they’re around more allergens at work and home. Memphis, TN About 14% of kids here have asthma. It causes 40% of stays at the city’s Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. But a lot of ER visits and high use of asthma meds aren’t the only reasons the Home of the Blues nabbed this year’s No. 1 spot. Local steel and food processing plants pollute the air. An above-average pollen count and poor nonsmoking laws don’t help, either. Brighter Spots for Asthma Of the 100 cities ranked, these 10 are the best. For the most part, they have less poverty, better school asthma programs, and better access to health care. But they also have cleaner air and good smoking bans. The result: fewer ER visits and deaths, and easier living with asthma. Here’s the list: 10. Austin, TX 9. Raleigh, NC 8. Sarasota, FL 7. Cape Coral, FL 6. Palm Bay, FL 5. Abilene, TX 4. San Jose, CA 3. Seattle 2. Boise, ID 1. San Francisco

5 Worst Cities for Spring Allergies

01:12
According to WebMD and a 2013 review by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, here are the 5 worst cities to live in for spring allergies. If you're one of the 40 million Americans who suffer from indoor or outdoor allergies, you probably know spring is here when the itchy, watery eyes and sneezing begin. According to WebMD and a 2013 review by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, here are the 5 worst cities to live in for spring allergies: Number 5 -- Louisville, Kentucky. Right on the Ohio River, Louisville is thick with bluegrass. Besides checking pollen counts for grass, also check other allergens like trees and weeds before going outdoors. Number 4 -- McAllen, Texas. Located on the state's southern tip, McAllen sees high temps and humidity already in the spring. Those conditions help spread pollen further. Number 3 -- Chattanooga, Tennessee. Allergens have gotten worse in this city famous for its steam-powered train. Prevent them from getting inside your home by turning on your air conditioning's recirculate setting and leaving windows and doors closed. Number 2 -- Knoxville, Tennessee. After spending a few years as number 1, this mountainous and charming city has dropped down one spot. Whenever contact with allergens can't be prevented, various treatments can help to manage symptoms. Number 1 -- Jackson, Mississippi. Full of prairies, croplands, and forests, Jackson has moved up three spots to number 1.

America's Worst Cities for Allergies

01:08
Fall allergies are never fun, but depending upon where you live you could be suffering more than those in other parts of the country. Fall allergies are never fun, but depending upon where you live you could be suffering more than those in other parts of the country. In assembling their worst 100 list of the "2013 Fall Allergy Capitals", The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America took three primary factors into consideration. They were pollen count, medication sales including both prescription and over the counter allergy remedies, and the number of doctors specializing in allergies working in the area. Scores revealed that places all over the country proved to have a combination of those factors significant enough to rank, but only one city got a perfect score -- Wichita, Kansas. According to the official report, it was high pollen and dependence on medications that really made the city stand out. Jackson, Mississippi came in 2nd, and Knoxville, Tennessee was given the number 3 spot. Residents of last year's top ranked Louisville, Kentucky will no doubt be overjoyed to learn that this year they've dropped to 4th place. Memphis rounded out the top 5. Regardless of their city's rank, experts remind the 40 million Americans afflicted with allergies that suffering is often optional. Seeing a specialist is highly recommended.

10 Worst Plants for Your Allergies

03:33
10 Worst Plants for Your Allergies When pollen is your worst enemy Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, doesn’t have anything to do with a fever, or hay for that matter. Instead, the watery eyes and stuffy nose are most often due to pollen from the beautiful plants and trees gracing your yard or neighborhood. (The condition was so named because it was discovered during haying season, when its symptoms were most present.) Warren V. Filley, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, gave us the lowdown on some of the most common allergy-causing plants and trees, and how to spot them. Ragweed Where you’ll see it: Fields, riverbanks, roadsides, rural areas There’s a ton in: the Midwest, the Mississippi River basin Peak time: Summer and fall “The most allergenic plant we have is ragweed,” says Dr. Filley, “It is less common on the West Coast or in New England. Therefore there is less pollen in those areas.” About 75% of Americans who have plant allergies are sensitive to ragweed, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Mountain cedar Where you’ll see it: Mountainous areas (hence the name) There’s a ton in: Arkansas, Missouri, parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas Peak time: Spring “For the Texas hill country, it does not get any worse than the mountain cedar tree, which causes some of the most severe allergy symptoms I have ever seen,” says Dr. Filley. Ryegrass Where you’ll see it: Dry, cool lawns, meadows, pastures There’s a ton in: Northern parts of the United States Peak time: Spring and summer Grasses as a whole are often problematic for allergy sufferers, says Dr. Filley. “There’s no allergy-free grass. And if you mow it, you pick up mold as well as pollen.” Other common allergens including timothy, blue, and orchard grasses. Maple Where you’ll see it: Along streams, woods There’s a ton in: the Eastern United States and Canada Peak time: Early spring Ash-leaf maple produces potent allergens and is found throughout the United States. Other, more moderate maples that trigger allergies are the red, silver, and sugar varieties. Elm Where you’ll see it: Cultivated, wetland habitats There’s a ton in: the Eastern and Midwestern United States Peak time: Spring (American Dutch elm); fall (lace bark elm) Dutch elm disease killed an estimated 100 million elm trees between 1930 and 1980. However, the trees made a comeback in the late 1990s. (Score one for the environment, zero for your allergies.) Mulberry Where you’ll see it: Woods, river valleys There’s a ton in: the Eastern United States Peak time: Winter to summer Flowering plants don’t usually produce the most potent allergens. If it’s pretty—think cherry and crabapple trees in blossom—it’s probably “not” causing your misery. However, the mulberry has been known to contribute to hay fever. Pecan Where you’ll see it: Woods, orchards There’s a ton in: the western fringe of the Southeastern United States, north Florida, Georgia, Indiana, and Ohio Peak time: Spring Pecans may taste great in pie, but in areas with lots of pecan trees, the pollen is second only to ragweed as a source of severe allergies. Oak Where you’ll see it: Woods There’s a ton in: the Coastal Plain from Texas to Virginia, and Florida Peak time: Spring “Oak produces less potent pollen but very large quantities,” says Dr. Filley. Oak trees often produce the most pollen for the longest season. Pigweed/tumbleweed Where you’ll see it: Lawns, roadsides There’s a ton in: The western and northern United States Peak time: Spring to fall Other weed allergens in the West include Russian thistle and green molly (aka kochia or burning bush). Arizona cypress Where you’ll see it: Well-drained soils There’s a ton in: the Southwestern United States Peak time: Spring In warm climates, this tree can cause pollen problems for six to seven months out of every year. Mold OK, we know, it’s not a plant (it’s a fungus). But we would be remiss if we didn’t mention mold. If your allergies act up in spring, it may not be due to pollen circulating in the air, but mold levels that rise with wetter, warmer air. “Not to be left out are the molds, of which there are hundreds, which produce significant symptoms throughout the U.S., depending on time of year and activity,” says Dr. Filley. Get accurate pollen and mold levels by using the National Allergy Bureau’s tool, which measures pollen and mold levels by area. Allergy Season 2018: Worst Cities to Visit, Live In For Allergy Sufferers

03:25
It’s officially May, and, as the saying goes, the April showers helped bring May flowers. And with those flowers came allergy season. Pretty much everywhere across the United States, flowers are blooming and trees are sprouting new leaves, and both are bringing an abundance of pollen. But people in some cities are more likely to experience allergy symptoms, like runny noses, congestion and itchy watery eyes, than in others.Five cities across the country were named the “most challenging places to live with spring allergies” by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). The cities that top the list and take the No. 5 spot are both in Texas. McAllen was ranked the most challenging to live in, with San Antonio in fifth place. In second place was Louisville, Kentucky, followed by Jackson, Mississippi, in third place and Memphis, Tennessee, in fourth. The ranking is based on the pollen and mold counts, the amount of allergy medication used there and the availability of the board-certified allergists in the area, the AAFA said. McAllen residents and visitors there encountered the city’s above-average pollen and mold as well as fewer available allergists.Recommended Slideshows5150 Best-Selling Albums in U.S. History51In Pictures: The 50 Most Powerful Military Forces in the World51In Pictures: Top 50 U.S. Cities Ranked by Quality of Life And Average SalaryFor those whose city didn’t make the list, the AAFA also provided regional rankings of cities. Providence, Rhode Island, was named the most challenging city for allergy sufferers in the Northeast, and Las Vegas the most challenging for those in the West. It’s likely that allergy seasons will get only worse in the future, according to the National Climate Assessment. A full report of the pollen and mold scores, along with other factors the AAFA considered, is available with a list of 100 cities across the country, including New York, at No. 25; Los Angeles, 66; and Miami, 29. All three of those cities are worse off this year than they were in 2016, the report shows.

7 Super Toxic U.S. Sites

Let's face it: Humans are pretty messy. Industrial processes like mining and manufacturing are important parts of keeping civilization going, but they all impact the environment. Sometimes that impact is particularly big and messy, leaving behind hazardous waste that can take years or even decades to clean up. 10 Weird SCHOOL RULES from Around the World

06:04
top 10 rules students need to follow from schools in other countries Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg For copyright matters please contact us at: david.f@valnetinc.com Description: In order for a school to function properly, rules have to be set into motion. Otherwise, total anarchy and chaos could ensue. Most rules are pretty simple as they revolve around the concept of respect in terms of respecting the teacher and students respecting each other so that there can be a productive learning environment. However, there are some schools that want to exercise more control, and they start to break the boundaries of personal space and living realistically. Some of these rules include unbalanced dress codes where girls have to cover as much of their body as possible while boys aren’t under the same restrictions. Some of these rules even involve food, which do make sense in a way due to food allergies. However, food restrictions have taken such a bizarre turn that parents are having a hard time meeting the demands. In this video are ten unbelievable school rules from around the world. It is important to know that other countries have rules and standards that may seem weird to others. But some of these rules are just downright crazy and could very much violate the right to live as a human. The world is slowly changing and evolving to be more realistic in their school rules, but there have to be bumps in order for change to happen in some way. Whether or not these rules actually help students focus more on education, only time will tell. There are other ways to educate kids without crazy school rules, and trial and error will pave the way to that time. Fake Food YOU Eat Every Day!

12:26
Check out this fake food we eat every day! From fake cheese to fake steak, this top 10 list of unhealthy processed food is a real scam! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "Most MYSTERIOUS Lost Worlds On Earth!" video here: https://youtu.be/oX1rLjFYseA Watch our "Most CREEPY Things Found Frozen In Ice!" video here: https://youtu.be/HaiYn6wpTPQ Watch our "Most SCARY Mythical Creatures Ever!" video here: https://youtu.be/LEvBTkPo2R4 #10 Prime Meat The prime cut meats that smaller restaurants and corporations sell are one of the biggest complaints that high-end chefs and physicians make. That’s because ‘prime cut’ suggests that it is a single cut of the best meat from the animal. But this isn’t the case in many restaurants. Actually, what if I told you they chop up all the leftover meat and glue it back together? Does the word transglutaminase ring a bell? This is the name for the meat glue they use to glue the low quality meat back together to make you think you’re getting a full piece. This is more than a lie, this is disgusting. Besides the fact that it is using the worst tiny cuts of meat, it’s made from ammonia. The stuff used in fertilizers and oven cleaners. They try to fight back by claiming it kills E Coli, which should not be something we should be worried about being on meat anyway. Justifying making people unknowingly eat ammonia just so they can pass off scrap meat does not seem ethical in the least. Be very careful where you eat your steak! See, this is why being a vegetarian seems like a safer option! Or maybe seafood…. #9 Imitation Crab Or maybe not seafood. For one, crustaceans feed off the worst possible debris on the bottom of the ocean. The only nastier creature is shrimp. This stuff they eat doesn’t magically disappear when they are caught and cooked either. There’s still…stuff in it that we eat…secondhand. Nevertheless, it’s expensive to buy fresh crab and shrimp, but you can get crab cakes and other delicacies at the grocery store for a pretty good price. Why? It’s usually because it is fake, under the guise of imitation crab meat. Imitation crab meat is made from the remains of other fish that are mushed together, and injected into a mold. They mince and mince random fish, whatever they can get their hands on, until it turns into the same texture as crab. It is then created into a paste that is frozen and then shaved into crab-like flakes. To make it taste like crab, they just add flavor and paint it to look like crab. So, next time you go for some cheap crab, remember that’s probably, beaten, frozen, shaved, and painted fish remains. I kind of like imitation crab but not really a fan of this process...it still tastes good so if you’re okay with this…then go ahead. #8 Parmesan Cheese Parmesan cheese is delicious! Especially, real authentic parmesan cheese. But did you know that companies will usually lie about what’s in “parmesan”? The FDA regulations make it legal to sell fake Parmesan cheese. This is some scary stuff. There are two huge deal breakers with parmesan. One is grated parmesan in the shaker. Most of the time, cellulose and mold inhibitor chemicals are added so it won’t clump. Cellulose, not cellulite, that’s just an after effect. Cellulose comes from ground up wood pulp and is considered “harmless and organic matter”. They usually add 2-4% cellulose, but the FDA doesn’t restrict it. In fact, some has been proven to carry 20%! That’s a lot of cellulose on your pasta! The saddest part is, this is just allowed in the United States. Parmesan cheese legally means the kind of cheese that comes from Parma, Italy. But in the US, you can call it parmesan when it’s just dehydrated, grated mozzarella. This is like the Kobe beef of cheeses. Most of the time, when you get parmesan, it’s not parmesan. It’s cellulose and a mixture of cheap cheeses. #7 Egg Substitute This one is a little different. No one knows what it is, but many believe that it’s a great substitute for people with egg allergies. But really, it’s still just eggs. They take mostly egg whites, fresh, frozen, or powdered, and add other ingredients. But not much. They actually just contain 99% egg whites! There’s not actually much substituting going on. It might be easier for people who don’t want to go to the trouble dealing with egg shells and yolks slipping everywhere, etc. In reality, it is called egg substitute because of that 1% that’s just artificial coloring, salt, onion powder, and who knows what else. Why? Why would they just flavor egg whites? “Egg substitute” is kind of misleading and should be for people with egg allergies who need a substitute. It shouldn’t just be eggs. Maybe it’s substituting something else? Is it the bottle substituting for the shell? Bottom line is…this isn’t egg substitute, it’s just expensive eggs.

15 Worst Insect Bites Ever

07:29
Keep away from these terrifying insects if they bite or sting you it's incredibly painful from the brown recluse to the giant centipede! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 10. Red Harvester Ant There is a reason you are told to avoid red ants. Their bite is very painful and venomous, so venomous in fact that its venom is among the most toxic insect venom in the world. Their colonies include a female that is responsible for producing eggs. They also travel to their food sources and leave a distinct scent as they go. 9. Amazon Giant Centipede Despite their name, these insects are found throughout the northwest part of South America and the Jamaican islands. Their bite produces very intense pain which for them is necessary as they are carnivores that hunt large prey like bats. They can live for up to a decade or even longer when kept in captivity, which is a really long lifespan for an insect. 8. Bed Bugs You may have thought that bed bugs were only part of the saying “Don’t let the bedbugs bite,” and couldn’t do any serious damage. As you can see that assumption would be totally wrong. They are miniscule and have flattened bodies that are about the width of a credit card, making it possible for them to hide almost anywhere, including, you guessed it, in your bed. They feed exclusively on blood and their bite is usually fairly painless. Eventually these bites can turn into extremely itchy welts and rashes can develop. So the next time someone tells you not to let the bedbugs bite, you should take it seriously. 7. Wasp If you are allergic to the venom that wasps carry and get stung by one, you could have some serious problems that may require a visit to the emergency room. Some of the symptoms can include swelling of the throat, lips and mouth, as this guy can attest to, and a severe decrease in blood pressure. For the most part however wasp stings are relatively harmless and can be treated at home. 6. Fire Ant These ants are extremely aggressive if you get too close to their nest. While its bite is not as painful as some of the other insects on this list, it is still something you would want to avoid. It’s bite can cause itching and stinging pain along with dizziness and difficulty breathing. They are native to South America though you can find them all over the world, meaning no one is safe from their wrath. 5. Paper Wasp These wasps are typically just under an inch long and have an extremely painful bite that is said to feel like acid being poured on an open wound. One of their stings can result in severe swelling, itching, breathing difficulties and vomiting. Their name is derived from the way they construct their nests. They use their saliva to convert plant material into a paper like material to build their nests with. 4. Tarantula Hawk This wasp feeds on tarantulas, so you should already know to try to avoid them. But if you didn’t than try this on for size: A sting from a tarantula hawk causes blinding pain and can lead to wheezing and diarrhea or vomiting. It is considered one of the most painful stings in the world. They look amazing, with a dark bluish body and brightly colored wings, so while it may be tempting to get a closer look, remember what you just learned… 3. Brown Recluse Spider Of the 20,000 or so different species of spider, only 4 are known to cause serious damage to human beings, and as you can see from this disturbing image of the effects of one of its bites, the brown recluse is one of them. Their venom can spread throughout the body in minutes and literally melt your skin off. Children have even been known to die from a brown recluse spider bite. The spider is native to the midwestern and southeastern parts of the United States though it is often confused with different species of recluse spiders in other parts of the country. 2. Bullet Ant Not only do bullet ants deliver the most painful sting of any insect, but some people claim that its sting causes the worst pain known to man, a pain that is best comparable to being shot. One sting causes pain all over your body and can even make you pass out. As part of their warrior initiation rites the Satere Mawe tribe of Brazil require teenage boys to wear gloves filled with bullet ants for ten minutes and endure the pain without complaint, making me extremely glad that I didn’t grow up as a part of this tribe. 1. Brown Recluse 2 The brown recluse is a repeat offender on this list and you can probably tell why. The effects of their bite are absolutely disgusting and terrifying. The receiver of the bite was a 40 year old man who said he was bitten on an airplane. If he hadn’t been treated when he was he could have lost his leg or even died. The man is suing the airline he was on over the incident.
