Eating well during chemotherapy treatment can be a challenge. Chemotherapy can affect both appetite and flavor preference. Foods may start to taste strange or take on a metallic taste. In addition, there are many other symptoms that may affect your ability to keep yourself well-nourished. But don't despair! Here are ways to keep your body healthy and your immune system supported during treatment. Transcription: I’m Stacy Kennedy, a nutrition specialist for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. Welcome to eating well during cancer. Today, I’d like to talk with you about how to help manage symptoms associated with treatment, specifically with chemotherapy. During chemotherapy treatment, it’s very common for patients to not really feel like eating, or for appetite to be low, or the taste of food to be off. In addition there are often many other symptoms that can impact your overall wellness and ability to keep yourself well-nourished through a healthy diet. Things like fatigue are very common, bowel changes, like constipation or diarrhea, mouth sores, and nausea. There are so many tips and tricks, and easy, simple ways that you can go about keeping your body healthy, your immune system supported during your treatment, even in the face of all of these symptoms. When it comes to taste changes, if food doesn’t taste good, it’s very hard for it be desirable to eat. One of the ways to help make food taste better is to think about some different flavors. Often times tart, or more sour flavors, things like a pomegranate, ginger, lemon, apples—those can help manage some of that off, or undetectable taste. Now, if you’re experiencing mouth sores, tart flavors can sometimes burn, so you would want to consider something a little more soothing. Think of the texture and flavor, say, of a baked sweet potato. When it comes to a lot of symptoms that I described, there are some overarching, or common, themes that can really help to manage all of these symptoms. For example: To stay well hydrated. If water doesn’t taste good, consider flavoring your water naturally. Not only will you stay hydrated, you’ll get a boost in immune-supporting phytonutrients. One great tip for nausea is to make a tea using ginger and lemons. Ginger and lemon have both been shown in research to have some anti-nausea properties, and they’re in that flavor profile, which can be really, really helpful. In addition to that, having small, frequent meals and drinking your fluids in smaller amounts throughout the day can really make a big difference. Oftentimes, seeing a large plate of food will really decrease a person’s appetite during chemotherapy. So using a smaller plate, making things colorful and light, can really make a big, big difference. When it comes to eating throughout the day, including a healthy source of protein is also a good way to help stave off nausea, and also to reduce some fatigue. When we think about keeping our bowels healthy, eating that plant-based diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, can really make a big difference, when it comes to constipation. If you’re experiencing diarrhea, some fruits and vegetables may be harder to digest. There are many ways to go about helping this, while still staying on your healthy diet. That would include sometimes making a smoothie, or fresh juice. The study was conducted by the researchers from University of Guelph, Ontario. During the study, the researchers have identified a protein called cadherin-22, a potential factor in cancer metastasis or the spread of cancer. In addition to this the protein also decreased the adhesion and invasion rate of breast and brain cancer cells by up to 90 per cent. "Cadherin-22 could be a powerful prognostic marker for advanced cancer stages and patient outcomes. If you can find a treatment or a drug that can block cadherin-22, you could potentially prevent cancer cells from moving, invading and metastasizing" said lead author Jim Uniacke, a professor at the varsity. During the course of the study, researchers found that it is precisely under conditions of low oxygen that cancer cells trigger the production of cadherin-22, putting in motion a kind of protein boost that helps bind cells together, enhancing cellular movement, invasion and likely metastasis. Studying breast and brain cancer cells in a hypoxia incubator, the researchers discovered that cadherin-22 is involved in this process to enable the spread of cancer cells. 12 Foods To Fight Cancer (For Cancer Patients)
1: Oily Fish Fish oil will provide long chain omega-3, a powerful anti-inflammatory in the body that minimizes COX-2 and its abilities to drive localised negative hormones called eicosanoids which cause inflammation - driving cancer and metastases. 2: Carotenoids - Carrots, peppers and greens Along with apricots, red and yellow peppers, greens like kale and spinach and sweet potatoes, carrots provide anti-cancer carotenoids like beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A, as and when required by the body. 3: Ginger Fresh, raw ginger has a number of very important benefits in cancer. It is a terrific anti-inflammatory agent in the body and reduces the effects of COX-2. 4: Seeds Seeds are full of good oils, whole vitamins in a natural form (like vitamin E) and fibre to strengthen your gut flora. Your Body Is Acidic. Here’s What You NEED To Do. The Real Truth Behind Cancer. Have you Ever heard of Dr. Otto H. Warburg? Unless you or your family member has suffered from cancer and tried to cure it naturally, his name and research probably won’t ring a bell. Dr. Warburg is a Nobel prize winner best known for his work on the process of oxidation and the metabolism of tumors. According to the Nobel Prize Committee, “he has shown, among other things, that cancerous cells can live and develop, even in the absence of oxygen”. As you know, oxygen is essential for all life to thrive and survive. The fact that cancerous cells can thrive without it is perplexing, so here’s a little breakdown on how it works. Dr. Warburg discovered that “tumor cells obtain the energy required for their existence in two ways: by respiration [a process that requires oxygen] and by fermentation [an anaerobic process]. In respiration they burn organic materials to carbon dioxide and water; in fermentation they split glucose to lactic acid. Both carbon dioxide and lactic acid are acidic, meaning that cancer cells essentially thrive in an acidic environment. When tumors occur in oxygen-deprived environments, a protein called CHCHD4 triggers the release of HIF (hypoxia-inducible factor), a dimeric protein complex that encourages blood vessel formation around the tumor as well as tumor migration. This allows the tumor to continue to grow and spread throughout the body. Aggressive diseases like pancreatic cancers and gliomas (a form of brain tumor) contain higher levels of CHCHD4 than other cancers. “Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation. All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes.” Explained the Nobel Laureate. Dr. Waburg also noted that all the tumors he studied behaved the same, meaning that there is, in fact, a cure-all way to fighting cancer. “In order to kill tumor cells through want of energy it is necessary to stop respiration as well as fermentation.” He noted that all tumors studied at the time behaved the same. Since tumor cells have two ways of obtaining energy, starving them of glucose isn’t the best way to win the fight. Dr. Waburg suggested that “In order to kill tumor cells through want of energy it is necessary to stop respiration as well as fermentation.” The Acid-Alkaline Balance. Since cancer thrives in an acidic environment, one of the easiest ways to fight it is by making your body more alkaline. Acidic foods like dairy, red meat, refined grains and sugar are believed to contribute towards higher rates of cancer diagnosis and death because they contribute towards acidosis, a state in which your bodily fluids and/or tissues become too acidic. This state can lead to diseases like multiple sclerosis, high cholesterol, arrhythmia, immunodeficiency disorders, joint pain, osteoporosis, lethargy, chronic illness, heart disease, and diabetes. On the other hand, eating more alkaline foods, like fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help reverse the condition and improve overall health and wellbeing. Staying hydrated, well rested, and calm, and breathing deeply can also improve the condition. Two of the most powerful tools for alkalizing your body include lemon juice and baking soda. Baking Soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is produced by your pancreas to neutralize excess acid in the digestive system. Multiple people have found that they were able to cure their own cancer by ingesting baking soda. Lemon Juice although lemon juice is acidic on the pH scale, it can actually be used to make water more alkaline. Here’s how to combine these ingredients for a simple cancer-fighting drink! This video chapter summarizes the medical literature addressing the links between animal protein consumption and increased cancer risk. To hear the audio and see the accompanying visuals, please play the video.] PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT: In the previous chapter of our health section, we discussed the basics of protein and diet. In this chapter, we’ll be discussing the relationship between animal protein and cancer. Dr. T. Colin Campbell, from Cornell University, one of the most prominent figures of nutritional biochemistry, noted that “an elevated intake of protein (particularly animal protein) is a risk factor for certain cancers” and that it “promotes carcinogenesis.” In this particular study, researchers from Berkeley and Cornell, including Dr. Campbell, delivered a liver carcinogen to rats and then fed those rats different amounts of animal protein. One group of the rats was fed a high protein diet containing 22% animal protein. The other group was fed a diet with only 6% protein. Again, all of the rats were first given the same liver carcinogen. It was observed, at 100 weeks, that most of the lower protein fed rats were still alive and “were healthier and thriftier in appearance”, whereas many of the higher protein fed rats were “already dead or were severely burdened with tumors”. The group with the highest animal protein intake — 22% — developed the highest incidents of tumors (90% developed tumors), had the largest overall tumor mass and had three times higher prevalence of tumor metastases as compared to the group fed the lowest animal protein diet. In another experiment, rats were similarly administered a carcinogen and then fed differing levels of animal protein. Specifically, the rats were given a liver carcinogen called aflatoxin, then half were fed a diet containing 20% animal protein. As shown on the upper curve of this graph, that group exhibited the expected increased cancer development corresponding with the higher doses of the carcinogen they received. This is not surprising. The more carcinogen they were given, the more cancer they developed. But, look what happened to the other half of the rats who were instead fed a lower protein diet after being given the carcinogen. Cancer development did not increase for these rats, as would have been expected with the increasing doses of the carcinogen they received. Decreasing the amount of animal protein in their diet almost made the cancer producing substance stop having its cancer producing effect. As the authors of the study put it, “These data rather convincingly show that the growth and development of preneoplastic foci” (…the precursor clusters of cancer cells that grow into tumors…) “primarily occur in response to the level of dietary casein[,]” providing evidence that, “nutrient intake…is more rate limiting towards the development of these preneoplastic lesions than is the carcinogen dose.” In other words, this study indicated that some cancer development may be controlled more by dietary protein levels than by exposure to the underlying carcinogen. These two studies that we just reviewed examined animal protein. But what about plant protein? Would it have the same effect on cancer development that animal protein has? The answer is, “No” it does not. When rats under the same conditions were similarly dosed with the same liver carcinogen (aflatoxin), but then fed diets with plant protein instead of animal protein, they did not exhibit the same increased cancer development — even when they were given diets with high levels of plant protein after being dosed with the carcinogen. The study found that the rats fed a diet of 20% plant protein after being dosed with the carcinogen exhibited far less cancer development than rats fed diets with 20% animal protein. Again, all of the rats were dosed with the same liver carcinogen, but the rats fed a high animal protein diet exhibited the high levels of cancer development, while the rats fed a high plant protein diet did not. The conclusion of this and similar studies is that large amounts of animal protein greatly enhance tumor growth, while large amounts of plant protein do the opposite. Master “Cut-off Switch” for Cancer-Causing HER2 Protein Located.
Herceptin has been touted as a wonder drug for women with HER2-positive breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease that is fueled by excess production of the HER2 protein. However, not all of these patients respond to the drug, and many who do respond eventually acquire resistance. Researchers at Mayo Clinic have found a promising way to circumvent this obstacle. They identified a small site in the HER2 protein that enables it to pair up, forming a molecular switch that sets off a cascade of events that turn normal cells cancerous. The researchers showed that disrupting this site can stem the growth of breast cancer cells, even more effectively than drugs currently used in the clinic. Their study was published April 17, 2015 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Ruth Lupu, the study's senior author comments.

Korean scientists discover cancer accelerating protein is boosted by lactate 

Exercise is supposed to be good for us, but there′s a new study out showing it could be harmful to people who have cancer. Korean researchers have discovered... a chemical compound that′s created during exercise that could potentially speed up the growth of cancer cells. Park Se-young reports. The body uses a lot of oxygen when you exercise, which is why you end up breathing heavily afterwards. This action isn′t always enough to supply the body with the oxygen it needs, so the body produces lactate, which acts as an energy source during exercise. But now, Korean researchers have discovered that a protein called NDRG3, which sends a signal to accelerate the growth of cancer cells, is also boosted by lactate. NDRG3 is present in all cells, and it promotes cell growth and the creation of blood vessels. A body with plenty of oxygen can break the protein down. Without enough oxygen, however, the protein combines with the lactate build-up,... speeding up cancer cell growth. The team′s experiments with mice showed that liver cancer cells in animals with NDRG3 grew at more than twice the rate as those in which the protein was suppressed. ″We′ve come to a deeper understanding of normal human bodily activity by studying the molecular basis for lactate-induced signaling. We can use the finding to develop therapies for disorders related to oxygen deficiency.″ Previous studies have shown the influence of lactate on tumor growth, but they weren′t able to explain how it happens and what role lactate plays in the process. Meanwhile, the team says cancer patients can′t forgo exercise completely, but should design their workouts in consultation with a physician. The discovery was published in the U.S. journal ″Cell″ in April. Park Se-young, Arirang News.

Smart proteins make macrophages better cancer-eating machines

A team of researchers has engineered smart protein molecules that can reprogram white blood cells to ignore a self-defense signaling mechanism that cancer cells use to survive and spread in the body. Researchers say the advance could lead to a new method of re-engineering immune cells to fight cancer and infectious diseases. The team successfully tested this method in a live cell culture system. The work was led by bioengineering professors Peter Yingxiao Wang and Shu Chien with collaborating professors Victor Nizet and Xiangdong Xu, all at the University of California San Diego, along with researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
