Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux, is a long term condition where stomach contents come back up into the esophagus resulting in either symptoms or complications.[4][5] Symptoms include the taste of acid in the back of the mouth, heartburn, bad breath, chest pain, vomiting, breathing problems, and wearing away of the teeth. Complications include esophagitis, esophageal strictures, and Barrett's esophagus. Located above the navel[1] or slightly below the solar plexus, Manipura translates from Sanskrit as the "City of Jewels" (Mani - gem, Pura or Puri - city). Manipura is often associated with the colors yellow,[2] blue in classical tantra,[3] and red in the Nath tradition. Manipura is associated with fire and the power of transformation. It is said to govern digestion and metabolism as the home of Agni and the vital wind Samana Vayu. The energies of Prana Vayu and Apana Vayu (inward and outward flowing energy) meet at the point in a balanced system. Manipura is the home of the coeliac plexus, which innervates most of the digestive system. In chakra-based medicine, practitioners work this area to promote healthier digestion, elimination, pancreas-kidney and Adrenal function. Weak Agni (fire) in the coeliac plexus leads to incompletely digested food, thoughts and emotions, and is a source of ama (toxicity). Prāṇāyāma (Sanskrit: प्राणायाम prāṇāyāma) is a Sanskrit word alternatively translated as "extension of the prāṇa (breath or life force)" or "breath control." The word is composed from two Sanskrit words: prana meaning life force (noted particularly as the breath), and either yama (to restrain or control the prana, implying a set of breathing techniques where the breath is intentionally altered in order to produce specific results) or the negative form ayāma, meaning to extend or draw out (as in extension of the life force). It is a yogic discipline with origins in ancient India.

Many people with asthma find it difficult to exercise. They may cough, develop chest tightness, wheezing or have shortness of breath. However, this doesn't mean that you should not exercise if you have asthma. In fact, exercising regularly is one of the best things that you can do to keep your lungs and body healthy. If your asthma makes it hard for you to exercise, then make sure you use your quick relief, or rescue medicine before you are active. This can be done by taking two puffs of your inhaler. Remember to use your spacer every time, at least 15 minutes before you exercise. But if you do develop symptoms while you are exercising, then it is very important that you stop and rest. You can use your rescue medication again even if it has not been four hours. Make sure that your breathing has returned to normal before you resume activity. Everyone with asthma should be able to exercise and play sports. If you aren't doing well, make sure that you talk to your doctor so that you can find other treatment options. Certainly you're gonna wanna focus on the lung reflexes. The lung reflexes are housed in the ball of the foot and also on the dorsum so they're all up here as well so we're gonna want to really detail that area. Certainly if you are having an asthmatic attack definitely call 911 and get to the doctor; have something in place. Reflexology is a great complimentary practice, but it's certainly a complimentary practice. You're gonna want to seek professionals should you be having an attack. So we'll start with the lung reflexes. For the lungs we could do the thumb walking and we'll just come up here on the plantar aspect of the foot all the way up to the base of the toes and then we'll come back down. So the other thumb will come down, and I'm really supporting with the other hand, with my fingers and my whole hand, and then you come up again, and if someone has asthma you want to really detail that area, so in addition to walking, thumb walking up and down, you could also thumb walk across. So you'll finish there, all the way across, and then you can go across from the lateral aspect to the medial aspect, so the outside of the foot to the inside, you go across, so you're thumb walking across. And you'll go all the way up; you'll finish right up there. To do the dorsal aspect, or the top of the foot, I use finger walking. So with finger walking you'll just come up through here and you're just gonna come down. So again it's just little bites. And I come up. And I'm going between the metatarsals so if you want to be a little bit more detailed you could go towards, for instance, the second metatarsal here and then you could do it again and detail towards the third just to have more detailed work. Another thing, you know, if someone is having an asthma attack a doctor will administer adrenaline. The adrenal gland naturally produces adrenaline so you could give some attention to the adrenal gland reflex and that's right in here on the plantar, the bottom of the foot, the plantar aspect. So from here you just go right in there. You could thumb walk to find it but generally it's going to be around mid-foot in between this first and second metatarsal, a little bit leaning towards that first. And then lastly you could come along here and you could end with the solar plexus reflex to ease the tension and relax the body. So you come up through here, your thumbs meet at the center, and then you just lean a little forward to meet the point. And that will be it. Those will be the reflexes you detail for attention to asthma.

Just make sure you are able to relax as much as possible. Focus on your breathing as much as possible. Breathe in through your nose very slowly. (Your stomach should rise, if you are doing it right) Now exale very slowly (Your stomach should sink in as you exhale) Repeat The Papworth Method This method doesn't work well for allergy or sickness based asthma. It works better with mouth breathing type of asthma problems. How To Practice The Papworth Method Use diaphragmatic based slowed breathing through the nose. Adjust your breathing to the activity that you are doing. Pursed Lip Technique This method is used for people who are in the middle of an attack who don't want to use an inhaler or who don't have an inhaler. It works by getting rid of all the trapped air in the lungs and returning your breathing to normal. How To Practice The Pursed Lip Technique Lay or sit somewhere that you can focus and be calm. Inhale very slowly through your nose. Breathe from your stomach area. Repeat as much as you like. Progressive Relaxation Technique This method uses shallow breathing to help gain control of the patients breathing. How To Practice The Progressive Relaxation Technique Find somewhere you can lay down and relax and close your eyes. Slowly breathe in through your nose. Flex your right foot muscles for 30 seconds, and focus on the tension as you release the muscles. Continue to do the same thing for all parts of your body hands,feet,arms,legs,shoulders,jaw,forehead, and chin. Do these all one at a time. When you are done you should feel warm all over your body, and feel free to stay in this relaxed state as long as you want to. Yoga Based Breathing Techniques In a study in 2009 they found out asthmatics who use yoga reduce the usage of their rescue inhaler by 43%. Also it is great for fitness and removal of stress. This is really great if you have exercise related asthma (I have this type of asthma as well). It isn't strenuous so it won't cause an asthma attack and will help prevent them, its a win win. How To Practice Yoga Based Breathing Techniques yoga breathingThere are many many types of yoga breathing techniques but this should get you started, feel free to sign up at a local yoga class for more. Sit comfortably stretch your arms out in front of you. Inhale and stretch your arms out (like a "T" or cross) Exhale and bring your arms back to the front of your body. Repeat 10 times and relax your arms.

Many of my teammates got into swimming because the doctor recommended the sport because of their asthma. It was found that in the 2008 about 25 percent of Olympic swimmers had verified asthma. In recent studies that I’ll link in the description they have studied the relationship between swimming and asthma. They indicate that swimming training is well-tolerated in children and adolescents with stable asthma, and increases lung function (moderate strength evidence) and cardio-pulmonary fitness (high strength evidence). If you are fit, asthma symptoms are less easily triggered than when you are unfit. But that comes with almost every sport. so why do doctors recommend swimming? Well, the symptoms are more likely to occur in dry cold weather and when the person overheats. So doctors hypothesized that warm humid conditions might reduce the risk of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and that swimming could help develop good breathing practices. However, on most studies I found they concluded that whether or not swimming is better than other forms of physical activity cannot be determined from their experiments . Further adequately powered trials with longer follow-up periods are needed to better assess the long-term benefits of swimming. However, as one of my friends with asthma told me “high levels of chlorine and enclosed swimming pools with inefficient air ventilation made training and competing extremely difficult.” From what I have gathered asthma needs to be treated on a case to case basis. “Be proactive and take asthma medications as directed to help prevent exercise-induced asthma symptoms. Keeping a quick-relief inhaler poolside is also advisable, in case you experience symptoms while swimming. Swimming is not a treatment for asthma, and medications should always be used as prescribed. Talk to your doctor before starting a new physical activity.” says Medical advisor: Shilpi Agarwal, M.D. But most importantly if you have asthma and love swimming remember that you can still reach high levels of competition. As four time olympic medalist Peter Vanderkaay said on an interview “Once I found the right long-term action plan, I was able to get where I am today.
