Digging Lazy Beds to Start a Garden

13 Years Living Off the Land - Man Shares REAL Homestead Experience

07:17
Peter from TreeEater Farm & Nursery (http://treeeaternursery.com/) in BC shares the challenges and lessons learned from his experience earning a living off the land for 13 years with his partner Magdalene. Peter moved to a piece of land in British Columbia's Gulf Islands as an idealistic 22-year old who wanted to save the world and reduce his environmental footprint by growing his own food, building his own shelter, and producing his own fibres for clothes. Magdalene joined him a few years later. To make this homesteading project financially viable, the couple has had to experiment with different revenue streams, including community supported agriculture (CSA) vegetable box programs, hand forged tools, meat animals, dairy cows, and selling fruit and nut trees, as well as plenty of off-farm work as well. After a steep and labour-intensive learning curve, Peter has realized that living off the land can be very expensive, that it can be difficult to earn an income from agricultural products — especially if your land isn't situated in an area with a market for your product nearby, and that living off the land requires a lot of infrastructure & maintenance — all of which costs time and money. And they aren't even trying to be off grid. It was refreshing to get such an honest look behind the scenes of what appears to be a utopian lifestyle: living in a hand built timber frame home with a cozy wood stove, and eating fruit and nuts from your own island orchard's trees, and to know there's quite a big financial and physical struggle to make it all happen. 3 Simple Strategies for Dealing with Drought in the Garden

04:29
This video was inspired due to an lovely heatwave. It shares 3 very simple strategies which anyone can use to reduce the effect of drought and they are water, protection and prevention. I also include a couple of other considerations at the end of the video. Here is a list of drought tolerant vegetables: http://www.offthegridnews.com/survival-gardening-2/14-drought-resistant-vegetables-to-plant-if-you-rarely-get-rain/ New to HuwsNursery? My name is Huw Richards, I live in Wales, UK and I am a teenager who loves vegetable gardening. Unusual right? I love to teach people around the world about growing their own food organically and my end goal is to get as many children as possible to have the experience of growing food which I believe is one of the most important things a child could learn. Orchard Design 3 - Biochar Processing in Cone Pit Trench Method

09:31
http://www.edibleacres.org After a solid first pass of pollarding and clearing in the new orchard space, it's time to clean up the branches and tops of trees that 1) can't be laid up in piles as a component of hugelmounds or 2) can't be easily woven into the living wall flanking the area. Using cone pit method biochar production, I'm able to process these tops at a rate on par with what a gas powered wood chipper could do. Modifying the basic shape of the pit to be somewhat more of a trench, I'm able to process branches with less modification. This system produces nearly pure charcoal at the end and can be used to improve soil texture and fertility dramatically. Plus, it's a great way to stay incredibly warm when it's 15 degrees out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1jAo7qd_Q8 - Great video by youtube producer 'skillcult' going deep into the concept of trench biochar method. Great channel to subscribe to. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLihFHKqj6JeozDm5VFoBHSHsDBMtbWr30 - Edible Acres playlist on various biochar production systems we work with.

Five Acres: A Historic Farm for Nanaimo's Future

03:29
The Five Acre Farm at 933 Park Avenue is one of the last intact pieces of the historic Harewood 5-Acre parcels. For the last three years, two local non-profit organizations, Growing Opportunities and Nanaimo Foodshare have been working together to operate an organic demonstration farm using the property as an education centre, therapeutic space and source of local food. Local employability skills training programs including VIU’s WEST program for students with disabilities and Foodshare’s Home Grown program for youth with multiple barriers to employment, use the farm as a training site. Growing Opportunities sells the produce at local farm markets. There are also seed trails to grow and select seeds that suit the local climate and to protect biodiversity and heritage seed. This farm is historically significant. Harewood was the first planned agriculture community in British Columbia. The ‘Land of Wakesiah’ as it was originally known, was a hunting ground for the Snuneymuxw First Nation. It was purchased by the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company in 1862 and in 1888, Samuel Robins, the company superintendent started leasing five acre parcels to miners and their families. Robins saw the need to provide his workers with an opportunity to “lease to purchase” farmland. He divided up the “Land of Wakesiah” into 5 acre lots, and provided them under 21 year leases to his workers on the condition that a portion of the land was cleared and fenced for food cultivation. After 10 years, the workers had an option to purchase the land. Harewood became the breadbasket for the Nanaimo community and area mines. Robins was also responsible for the creation of Bowen Park and Robins Park. The farm is ecologically significant. It includes a wetland and stream that is a tributary to the Chase River. It is also a significant green space in the neighborhood and has been identified as an open space in the Harewood Community plan and part of a network of green space centered around the stream. "The Plan illustrates how these elements integrate to form a coherent, rational, efficient and more complete neighbourhood that achieves the overall goals and objectives of the Harewood Neighbourhood Plan, protects the remaining natural assets, preserves some of the remnant farmland, and creates a more sustainable urban community." This area is being rapidly developed with dense single and multiple family housing the time to implement this part of the Harewood community plan is now. We would like to see this historic farm purchased and held in trust by the community in perpetuity as an educational farm and community green space. We want to share this vision and are inviting the community to come and tour the farm and get involved in production and planning for it’s future. Growing Potatoes - the Irish Lazy-Bed way.

37:39
Ultimate Survival Video - growing the most amount of food from the smallest amount of land with the least amount of effort and equipment. The Irish 'Lazy-Bed' cultivation method practiced for hundreds of years, here captured and portrayed in a unique video. The main interviewee, Michael 'Murt' O'Sullivan, is a survivor of an extraordinary generation that kept the lore and craft of growing potatoes alive into the computer age. This is a documentary on the traditional Irish spade cultivation of potato ridges or lazy-beds. The film uniquely captures the almost-lost skills of ridge-making and potato planting with a traditional West Cork spade. This was arguably the most efficient type of cultivation ever practiced in north-western Europe. Before the Great Irish Famine of 1845 -'49, incredibly, up to 11 million acres were cultivated with this method. It was a superb example of a horticultural method ideally suited to the climate and geology of Ireland. Yields of potatoes per acre using spades and ridges gave crops that have never been surpassed, even to this day. The spadesmen's intricate lore has been largely lost or difficult to access in old archives.. However, the maker of this video has pursued the subject for many years and was finally rewarded by finding a retired man,Michael 'Murt', on the remote Beara Penisnsula in West Cork, Ireland, who could uniquely demonstrate the skills and knowledge of his forbears. There is here a huge and timely lesson for us all today: how to cultivate in the most efficient and environmentally-friendly way the least amount of ground to produce sufficient, healthy food to keep a family throughout the year.

A: Frankie will be 9 in April of 2017 Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO. Q: Do you spend all your time alone? A: Ha!!! Not hardly. I do enjoy my solitary times and wilderness adventures but keep most of my private life to myself. I only share what I choose to share. Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s. http://www.edibleacres.org This is a LOOONG one! I take a very thorough look at our living fence system. In this fence there is a combination of dead branches piled up with pollarding and coppicing happening of living existing shrubs and trees. On the inside of this initial fence setup is planted food forest elements to fill out and provide more protection as well as yields for human use. This whole process puts to use material being generated in the clearing of shrub land and establishes an incredibly rich soil and diverse habitat for wildlife. Edible Acres is a full service permaculture nursery located in the Finger Lakes area of NY state.
