13 Years Living Off the Land - Man Shares REAL Homestead Experience

07:17
Peter from TreeEater Farm & Nursery (http://treeeaternursery.com/) in BC shares the challenges and lessons learned from his experience earning a living off the land for 13 years with his partner Magdalene. Peter moved to a piece of land in British Columbia's Gulf Islands as an idealistic 22-year old who wanted to save the world and reduce his environmental footprint by growing his own food, building his own shelter, and producing his own fibres for clothes. Magdalene joined him a few years later. To make this homesteading project financially viable, the couple has had to experiment with different revenue streams, including community supported agriculture (CSA) vegetable box programs, hand forged tools, meat animals, dairy cows, and selling fruit and nut trees, as well as plenty of off-farm work as well. After a steep and labour-intensive learning curve, Peter has realized that living off the land can be very expensive, that it can be difficult to earn an income from agricultural products — especially if your land isn't situated in an area with a market for your product nearby, and that living off the land requires a lot of infrastructure & maintenance — all of which costs time and money. And they aren't even trying to be off grid. It was refreshing to get such an honest look behind the scenes of what appears to be a utopian lifestyle: living in a hand built timber frame home with a cozy wood stove, and eating fruit and nuts from your own island orchard's trees, and to know there's quite a big financial and physical struggle to make it all happen. We are about 1/2 way through our Pensacola series & you can thank this incredible edible gardener for the remainder of this series, because she will be our guide. Living Fence and Woven Walls - An In-Depth discussion of design and implementation

19:29
http://www.edibleacres.org This is a LOOONG one! I take a very thorough look at our living fence system. In this fence there is a combination of dead branches piled up with pollarding and coppicing happening of living existing shrubs and trees. On the inside of this initial fence setup is planted food forest elements to fill out and provide more protection as well as yields for human use. This whole process puts to use material being generated in the clearing of shrub land and establishes an incredibly rich soil and diverse habitat for wildlife. Edible Acres is a full service permaculture nursery located in the Finger Lakes area of NY state. We grow all layers of perennial food forest systems and provide super hardy, edible, useful, medicinal, easy to propagate, perennial plants for sale locally or for shipping around the country... http://www.edibleacres.org/purchase - Your order supports the research and learning we share here on youtube. We also offer consultation and support in our region or remotely. http://www.edibleacres.org/services Happy growing!

A Conversation With An Ozarks Vegetable Farmer

21:31
Tom is a farmer in the Ozarks. He does meaningful work feeding people and improving the land despite the steep challenges inherent in farming the hostile, rocky ground. Tom is an all-too-rare example of a farmer living and working on land that his family has preserved intact and undivided for four generations. I suspect that Wendell Berry would appreciate what Tom is doing here. Our conversation spanned many hours and several miles of walking through the farm plot and the surrounding lands. Tom draws from a deep well of hard-won experience, and I was fortunate to be able to record some of that to share here. I trust that his character and love of the land will show through the video. Enjoy! End music my me.

Planning your Off the Grid Homestead layout

Off the Grid , Planning your property layout ? Whether you're building off grid or not, the case remains that building your homestead somewhat along permaculture principals, is a great idea. Before you start building, think about what the end result will be. Look around and decide where everything, such as outside kitchens, wood sheds, sheds, vegie gardens etc should go and try to make them in easily accessible places, so that you actually use them.? Orchard Design 3 - Biochar Processing in Cone Pit Trench Method

09:31
http://www.edibleacres.org After a solid first pass of pollarding and clearing in the new orchard space, it's time to clean up the branches and tops of trees that 1) can't be laid up in piles as a component of hugelmounds or 2) can't be easily woven into the living wall flanking the area. Using cone pit method biochar production, I'm able to process these tops at a rate on par with what a gas powered wood chipper could do. Modifying the basic shape of the pit to be somewhat more of a trench, I'm able to process branches with less modification. This system produces nearly pure charcoal at the end and can be used to improve soil texture and fertility dramatically. Plus, it's a great way to stay incredibly warm when it's 15 degrees out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1jAo7qd_Q8 - Great video by youtube producer 'skillcult' going deep into the concept of trench biochar method. Growing Edible Plants Under Fruit Trees - Las Vegas, Nevada

14:21
I recorded this video at the end of May, 2017. Location: Las Vegas Nevada, USA. In this video, I show what I planted near/underneath of some of my fruit trees. If you have more ideas or suggestions please let me know. I really like the idea of growing edible and/or beneficial plants the way forest grows (many layers) instead of one height standard fruit tree orchards or garden rows, since growing a 'food forest' can take less space to grow more food and without me having to kill insects. To me it looks more beautiful since I value natural beauty and... plus I don't have to be so organized :-) Links to videos I mentioned: Planting Asparagus Around Deciduous Fruit Trees + Drunken Blooper https://youtu.be/piy87HtXKxA How to Grow Passion Fruit 'Frederick' in Las Vegas. Almost 50 years ago, fried chicken tycoon David Bamberger used his fortune to purchase 5,500 acres of overgrazed land in the Texas Hill Country. Planting grasses to soak in rains and fill hillside aquifers, Bamberger devoted the rest of his life to restoring the degraded landscape. Today, the land has been restored to its original habitat and boasts enormous biodiversity. Bamberger's model of land stewardship is now being replicated across the region and he is considered to be a visionary in land management and water conservation. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Short Film Showcase: http://bit.ly/ShortFilmShowcase About Short Film Showcase: The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors.
