Planning your Off the Grid Homestead layout

16:01
Off the Grid , Planning your property layout ? Whether you're building off grid or not, the case remains that building your homestead somewhat along permaculture principals, is a great idea. Before you start building, think about what the end result will be. Look around and decide where everything, such as outside kitchens, wood sheds, sheds, vegie gardens etc should go and try to make them in easily accessible places, so that you actually use them.? Growing Edible Plants Under Fruit Trees - Las Vegas, Nevada

14:21
I recorded this video at the end of May, 2017. Location: Las Vegas Nevada, USA. In this video, I show what I planted near/underneath of some of my fruit trees. If you have more ideas or suggestions please let me know. I really like the idea of growing edible and/or beneficial plants the way forest grows (many layers) instead of one height standard fruit tree orchards or garden rows, since growing a 'food forest' can take less space to grow more food and without me having to kill insects. To me it looks more beautiful since I value natural beauty and... plus I don't have to be so organized :-) Links to videos I mentioned: Planting Asparagus Around Deciduous Fruit Trees + Drunken Blooper https://youtu.be/piy87HtXKxA How to Grow Passion Fruit 'Frederick' in Las Vegas. Usually, winter leaves us all sitting inside our homes, by a fire, dreaming of all the new things we want to try on our homesteads in the following spring. We always spend that time talking together about big plans for the season. This year was no different! And in no time we had a few big ideas. Early in February the weather got nice, and so we decided to jump start our season! It began with a serious upgrade to our existing barn. The barn was built on a gravel pad. The gravel drained well but made it very difficult to clean the barn. So it was time to pour a concrete floor. This has been on of the best improvements on the homestead! The next big project we began working on was our pasture improvement. Over the last few years, our biggest problem with livestock was a lack of enough pasture and good pasture at that. Lots of our property that we were not using was heavily sloped, and not good for pasture. So we cut a road to our barn, (to get the concrete truck in) and used that to fill our sloped area. Now we have some serious pasture area! Finally, we began prepping for our new orchard. This year we realized, (as we talked about in a previous show) the importance of growing fruit and other perennials on our homestead. The beauty of fruit is that it takes less and less work each year while yielding more and more fruit! So preparations began to install an orchard of many different fruit and nut trees! This Saturday we have an Event at the farm, where we will be installing the orchard! Join us for that event: https://www.thisishomesteady.com/early-bird-orchard-planting-workshop-tickets/ It has been a busy spring! We're excited to tell you all about it! Join us for the chat, and Q and A session afterward.

Stunning Modern Tiny Home Inspired by Japanese Living

01:34
One of the most appealing aspects of a tiny house is the minimal design and lifestyle that goes with it. And that's exactly what Chris Heining had in mind when he designed his first tiny home for himself back in 1999. Chris was originally inspired to build a small and simple home after living in various Asian countries over a number of years. He was particularly inspired by the simple design and minimal living lifestyle popular in Japan. Keeping that in mind, he built his first tiny home utilizing as much space as he could, while keeping things simple, modern and small. The home is 10 X 20 feet (200 sq ft) and 15 feet high. It has a bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining space, and a bathroom that features a full tub and shower. The home was sold for $59,000. Images © Chris Heining http://tinyhouse.heininge.com/ =========================== #GoTinyHouseHunting is a channel sharing #homes under 500 sq ft and #tinyhouse. In the past few years, tiny homes have surged in popularity. They're economical, environmentally friendly, and encourage people to live minimally. Look around and have a look at some of the beautiful homes and spaces people have created. Enjoy!

Podcast - All About Comfrey On The Homestead

36:50
Source: http://smalltownhomestead.com/62 On today's podcast episode I discuss the many uses of having comfrey on the homestead and why EVERY homesteader should be growing it, what variety to grow and where to get it. Homestead Inspirational Quote of the Day: “I say, if your knees aren’t green by the end of the day, you ought to seriously re-examine your life.” ~Bill Watterson, Calvin & Hobbes My thoughts on this quote: If you want a better perspective on life try looking at it from ground level in your garden. When You work in your garden and look closely at the miraculous ecosystem active right in your backyard it will make you keenly aware that there is so much more going on the world than what you are normally aware of and help you to see things with a fresh set of eyes. Homestead Updates: Praying Mantis and Ladybugs Greenhouse update New Fruit Trees Frost Got Me! Homesteading Relevant News: Urban farmer turns town garden plot into permaculture experience Detroit Urban Farming Plan Shifts to Be More Neighborly Main Topic Of Discussion: All About Comfrey On The Homestead What is Comfrey? Comfrey is a perennial herb most commonly known for its qualities as a fertilizer and as herbal medicine. Comfrey is known as a dynamic accumulator because of its long tap root and ability to pull nutrients from deep in the soil up into its leaves. Different varieties of comfrey Common Comfrey - It is a perennial native to Europe. It is 3 feet tall including the flower stalk. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years by many different cultures. It can be somewhat invasive by spreading viable seeds. The roots are not invasive. True Comfrey seeds germinate quickly, especially on wet soil. Russian Comfrey - a natural cross between common comfrey and rough comfrey. It grows to 4 feet tall including the flowerstalk. Russian comfrey has purple, white, magenta-pink, red or blue (that fade to pink) flowers. The seeds are not viable. It has to be reproduced by root and crown cuttings. It produces 100-120 tons per acre of biomass per year. This is 3 times the amount that Common Comfrey produces. There are 21 cultivars of Russian Comfrey but #4 and #14 are the most common. Russian Comfrey Bocking 4 - More commonly used as fodder for feeding livestock. The roots of Bocking 4 go down 8-10 feet which makes is slightly more drought resistant and the leaves are slightly wider than bocking 14. Russian Comfrey Bocking 14 - This cultivar is more commonly used as a fertilizer because of its more narrow leaves which break down slightly faster, although both 4 and 14 are very similar and can be used as both fodder and fertilizer. The roots of 14 go down 6-8 feet which is a little less than Bocking 4. Bocking #14 Comfrey is more rust resistant than #4. Rust is a fungal disease though disease is very rare in all comfrey. It has an NPK ratio of 1.8 / 0.5 /5.3 and dried comfrey leaves contain 26% protein. Also Comfrey is the only plant known to harvest vitamin B-12 from the soil. Comfrey as fertilizer Compost Activator - include comfrey in the compost heap to add nitrogen and help to heat the heap. Comfrey should not be added in quantity as it will quickly break down into a dark sludgy liquid that needs to be balanced with more fibrous, carbon-rich material. Compost Tea - can be produced by rotting leaves down in rainwater for 4–5 weeks. Chop and Drop - a layer of comfrey leaves placed around a crop will slowly break down and release plant nutrients but avoid using flowering stems as these can root. Companion Planting - soil tests confirm that when comfrey is planted alongside other plants and especially other perennials and trees that soil nutrients increase. Comfrey as livestock feed Russian Comfreys can produce up to 100-120 tons per acre of leaf biomass per year. This is about 12.4 tons of dried comfrey leaf per acre. As a comparison Alfalfa yields 18 tons per acre. Corn is 25 tons per acre before it is dried. Pasture grass is 25 tons an acre. The protein amount in dried comfrey is 20-30%. As a comparison most beans (legumes) are around 8-9%. Soybeans are around 17%. Comfrey as medicine External use as a Poultice, Oil or Salve Treats Skin Irritation Can Treat Minor Cuts and Wounds Speeds Healing Of Broken Bones Warning: Don't use comfrey on deep wounds as it can heal the skin to quickly aiding in possible infection. Internal use Warning: In 2001, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a ban of comfrey products marketed for internal use, and a warning label for those intended for external use. In addition to restrictions on oral use, some experts recommend applying comfrey extracts no longer than 10 days in a row, and no more than 4–6 weeks a year. Can heal internal wounds in the digestive tract Comfrey as income I added this as a quality of comfrey because I think it makes a great commerc

HOT Day At The Homestead But Lots Of Activity

16:25
It was about 85 degrees today at the homestead. Inside the house it got quite hot. But we kept on working, just out of the heat. I was hoping to work more in the garden today but it was way too hot for me. Melanie was baking in the kitchen to top it off so it got very hot inside the house. That kept me out in my shop most of the time today where it was not as hot. I am working on restoring lead acid batteries for our off grid living. We plan to be fully off the grid and this means that lead acid batteries are going to be very important to us. I am also working on a vehicle battery replacement using supercapacitors. The super capacitors have about 1 million cycles life while a battery gets about a thousand. This is a huge difference. If I can get supercapacitors to replace a car battery for me then a person would potentially have a lifetime battery for the price of one single battery. Melanie's baking turned out very well today. She made the best pizza ever plus bread and muffins. I received a package in the mail from Tacklife containing a rotary tool kit. This is a very nice looking kit with more accessories than you usually get out of the box. You can find Tacklife on Amazon here: http://amzn.to/2qvJgFE Thanks for watching. Vertical farm designed to produce food amidst Shanghai's skyscrapers

00:59
The latest video in our Dezeen x MINI Living Initiative series investigates a design for a hydroponic vertical farm nestled among the skyscrapers of Shanghai. US architecture firm Sasaki Associates has designed the farm to produce food for the inhabitants of China's largest city. The farm's output will largely consist of leafy greens like kale, spinach and lettuce, which are staples of the local diet. The crops will be grown along a series of looped rails arranged side by side in a greenhouse, which will rotate to ensure even distribution of natural light from the sawtooth roof. The project aims to offer a space-saving alternative to traditional land-intensive farming, prompted by high land prices that encourage the development of vertical infrastructure. It will also features a variety of farming techniques suited to the urban environment, including floating greenhouses, algae farms and a vertical seed library.
