12 Tips To Take Care Of Your Feet If You Have Diabetes

04:08
If you or someone you know is suffering from diabetes, then it is crucial to ensure that you maintain the health of your feet. Yes, here are a few tips to care for your feet if you are a diabetic individual. Most of us may have experienced minor foot injuries at some point in our lives. We take the necessary precautions and allow it to heal. However, when a person with diabetes has an injury or an infection on his feet, then it becomes a major concern, as the wound or infection healing capacity in diabetic patients is extremely low due to poor blood circulation. The healing capacity of the feet tissues can be even lower in diabetic patients, as the feet are located in the extremities, further reducing blood flow to the region. If diabetic patients do not take care of their feet well, then the injuries and infections may even turn into gangrene, which is another deadly disease. So, here are a few tips to take care of your feet if you are a diabetic patient, have a look. Tips #1 Ensure you check your feet every night, before bed, for minor cuts, injuries, callouses, corn, etc., so that you can take immediate treatment. Tips #2 Diabetes feet care tips include asking someone to have a look at your feet regularly, if you cannot bend down due to body pain. Tips #3 You can use a small hand mirror to have a look at the bottom of your feet to check for signs, which is another feet care tip for diabetic patients. Tips #4 Even if you notice minor irritation or redness, small cuts, etc., on your feet, you must visit your doctor. Tips #5 In case you experience cuts or burns, clean them with antiseptic gels and apply ointments immediately. Tips #6 Another feet care tip for diabetic individuals includes moisturising your feet regularly, as dryness may lead to cracks and infection. Tips #7 Be extremely careful while clipping your toenails; and if you are unsure, you can ask someone for help. Tips #8 Another feet care tip for diabetic patients includes using nail clippers designed for toe nails, not fingernails, as they are wider and can avoid injury. Tips #9 Ensure that you file your toe nails after clipping them, as clipped nails can still be sharp and cause injury. Tips #10 Avoid using heating pads on your feet, as this habit may induce numbness in that area and you may not be able to tell when there is an injury. Tips #11 Another feet care tip for diabetic patients includes walking with footwear or slippers at all times, even indoors. Tips #12 Before wearing a pair of shoes, check them for stone, dirt or dust particles that may harm your feet. Video URL : https://youtu.be/y6-tcyLD6C8

7 Foods To Avoid When You Have Type 2 Diabetes

04:45
Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition that, according to a recent study, is the most common form of diabetes. In this particular type of diabetes, a person’s body becomes incapable of making or using insulin in an effective way. This phenomenon is also referred to as insulin resistance. And that is why, it is also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes. Also, as you can imagine, people suffering from this type have a high level of blood sugar. The case of insulin resistance can get worse if a person has extra body fat. That is why, it is highly imperative to steer clear from food items that are loaded with saturated fats and they should exercise on a regular basis to keep body weight under check. So, today we’ve curated a list of certain types of foods that you must steer clear of if you’ve type 2 diabetes. These foods can raise the level of bad cholesterol and increase insulin resistance. And people who have this type of diabetes are at a high risk of developing heart-related problems. Staying away from these foods and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for one’s health and well-being. So, take a look at the types of food you must avoid if you have type 2 diabetes, here. 1. Sugar Sugar is a strict no-no for any diabetes patient, be it type 1 or 2. Foods like cookies, soda, etc., can raise the blood sugar level. So, avoid food items that have a high content of sugar in them to keep your blood sugar level in check. 2. Full-fat Dairy Products People suffering from type 2 diabetes have insulin that is resistant in performing the body functions like breakdown of glucose. And food products that have a high level of saturated fats in them are considered to exacerbate this problem. And that is why, it is advised to stay away from curd, cheese, etc. 3. Raisins Dried fruits like raisins are a great source of healthy nutrients and minerals, but they also have a high content of sugar in them. So, avoid them to keep your blood sugar level regulated. 4. Processed Meat People suffering from type 2 diabetes have a higher chance of developing heart diseases. And consumption of processed meat can increase that risk, as it can raise the cholesterol level and exacerbate the risk factors of this type of diabetes. 5. Baked Foods Baked food items have a certain kind of fat in them that can increase the level of bad cholesterol. Moreover, they are high in calories. Consuming baked food items on a regular basis can increase the case of insulin resistance. 6. Alcohol Very few people are aware of the fact that the organ that plays an important role in balancing the ratio of blood sugar and insulin is the liver. And it is well known that consuming alcohol is not good for the liver. So, cut down on the quantity of alcohol you consume to stay healthy. 7. Fried Foods Fried food items are loaded with saturated fats. Consuming such foods can cause an individual to gain extra weight, which can further exacerbate the case of insulin resistance. So, these are foods that you must avoid at any cost if you have type 2 diabetes. If you have insulin resistance, it could be that mere minerals are deficient. Top 7 Type 2 Diabetes Medications

03:19
Some people who have type 2 diabetes can achieve their target blood sugar levels with diet and exercise alone, but many also need diabetes medications or insulin therapy. The decision about which medications are best depends on many factors, including your blood sugar level and any other health problems you have. Your doctor might even combine drugs from different classes to help you control your blood sugar in several different ways. 1. Metformin Generally, metformin is the first medication prescribed for type 2 diabetes. It works by improving the sensitivity of your body tissues to insulin so that your body uses insulin more effectively. Metformin also lowers glucose production in the liver. Metformin may not lower blood sugar enough on its own. Your doctor will also recommend lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and becoming more active. 2. Meglitinides These medications work like sulfonylureas by stimulating the pancreas to secrete more insulin, but they're faster acting, and the duration of their effect in the body is shorter. They also have a risk of causing low blood sugar, but this risk is lower than with sulfonylureas. Weight gain is a possibility with this class of medications as well. Examples include repaglinide (Prandin) and nateglinide (Starlix). 3. Thiazolidinediones Like metformin, these medications make the body's tissues more sensitive to insulin. This class of medications has been linked to weight gain and other more-serious side effects, such as an increased risk of heart failure and fractures. Because of these risks, these medications generally aren't a first-choice treatment. Rosiglitazone (Avandia) and pioglitazone (Actos) are examples of thiazolidinediones. 4. Sulfonylureas These medications help your body secrete more insulin. Examples of medications in this class include glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase), glipizide (Glucotrol) and glimepiride (Amaryl). Possible side effects include low blood sugar and weight gain. 5. GLP-1 receptor agonists These medications slow digestion and help lower blood sugar levels, though not as much as sulfonylureas. Their use is often associated with some weight loss. This class of medications isn't recommended for use by itself. Exenatide (Byetta) and liraglutide (Victoza) are examples of GLP-1 receptor agonists. Possible side effects include nausea and an increased risk of pancreatitis. 6. SGLT2 inhibitors These are the newest diabetes drugs on the market. They work by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing sugar into the blood. Instead, the sugar is excreted in the urine. Examples include canagliflozin (Invokana) and dapagliflozin (Farxiga). Side effects may include yeast infections and urinary tract infections, increased urination and hypotension. 7. DPP-4 inhibitors These medications help reduce blood sugar levels, but tend to have a modest effect. They don't cause weight gain. Examples of these medications are sitagliptin (Januvia), saxagliptin (Onglyza) and linagliptin (Tradjenta).

Heal your Pancreas Naturally with these Foods

04:19
Heal your pancreas naturally with these foods The pancreas is really the life saver in all of us. It plays a very important role for your health and well-being. It produces your insulin. If it is damaged, you will not get insulin. Without insulin, your glucose metabolism suffers. Your body cells cannot produce energy from food. Please visit The Refreshing Point Web store for Healthy Products discussed in my videos: https://www.amazon.com/shop/therefreshingpoint The pancreas plays a crucial role in digestion. When food empties from your stomach into the small intestine, it mixes with digestive enzymes from the pancreas that neutralize stomach acid, preventing damage to the intestine. These enzymes are also essential for your body to reduce inflammation caused by trauma, injury, allergens, toxins and infections. But most importantly, the pancreas produces insulin, which reduces blood sugar levels and allows your body to store food energy for future use. Eating the right foods can heal and nourish your pancreas. Foods That Heal The Pancreas Probiotic Yogurt Research finds that eating 3 servings of low fat or fat free yogurt that contains active cultures to help ease digestion, protect the pancreas and digestive system, and reduce the overall risk of pancreatic cancer. Cabbage A regular consumption of cabbage may help protect susceptible individuals against pancreatic cancer. Cabbage is loaded with vitamin C, but it also contains vitamin B6 and folate. Spinach The pancreas needs both iron and Vitamin B to function properly, and spinach has both. A pancreas that is properly nourished will be less likely to become inflamed or to be vulnerable to the onset of cancer. Licorice Licorice root is an excellent treatment for many problems with pancreas. Traditional Chinese used licorice root for thousands of years. Research even shows that this common root is loaded with an anti-inflammatory compound that reduces pain and swelling that is associated with pancreatitis. Cherries It’s really hard to eat just a handful of cherries, which is great news since the fruit is rich in antioxidants and perillyl alcohol (or POH), a compound that’s been linked to the prevention of pancreatic cancer. Garlic This is a major help for the pancreas. Garlic reduces the amount of sugar in the blood and stimulates the pancreas to produce sufficient levels of insulin. Aim to eat one to two slightly crushed cloves of garlic each day in addition to adding some to your foods. Red Reishi Mushrooms Used in China for thousands of years to restore balance inside the body, red rishi mushrooms reduce inflammation and have similar benefits of onions and garlic for pancreatic health. If are hard to find in your local grocery store, try the Asian foods section at a specialty grocery store. Sweet Potatoes Sweet potatoes along with other orange and yellow vegetables like carrots, corn and squash contain nutrients which are beneficial for the pancreas and may help prevent cancer. Other foods that also heal the Pancreas are Blueberries, Broccoli, Red Grapes, and Tomato Vegetable Soup. Because the pancreas is very easily damaged by an unhealthy diet, eating these certain food will boost its health. Have Diabetes? Take Care of that Ticker!

Researchers in England say more needs to be done to prevent heart disease in diabetes patients. That's because a recent study suggested they are at a 50% greater risk of death from heart attack than people without the condition. According to UPI, researchers at the University of Leeds say in a new study that heart attack patients with diabetes are 50 percent more likely to die from its effects than people who do not have diabetes. After adjusting for age, sex, other illnesses, and treatment for their heart attack, people with diabetes were 56 percent more likely to die if they had total blockage of the coronary artery, and 39 percent more likely to die if they had a partial blockage of the coronary artery. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/06/22/Diabetes-makes-heart-attack-50-percent-more-deadly-study-says/2881466618027/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

What Lotion Is Good To Use On Feet For A Diabetic Person?

03:09
What Lotion Is Good To Use On Feet For A Person With Diabetes? Download Diabetes Management Book: http://bit.ly/2g0NDAH Hello, I'm Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com, researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I'm going to answer the question, what foot lotion should I use. But before we get into that, make sure you download my free diabetes management book which also includes a diabetes grocery shopping guide (foods to eat and avoid). For a person with diabetes, taking care of your feet is of utmost importance. It is vital to make foot care a part of your daily routine. Bresta Miranda-Palma, MD, a professor with the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School says, “About 85% of amputations can be prevented if the patient gets a wound treated in time.” You should check your feet daily and check for new cuts and scrapes. We have more on this in our video, “Foot Care and Diabetes” Part of foot care is making sure your feet are hydrated. Rough, dry skin can crack and cause major problems. A good moisturizing lotion can be as important as your prescription medication in keeping your diabetes in check. A quick note, when putting lotion on your feet, it is vitally important that you do NOT put lotion between your toes. This can cause can moisture that can lead to fungus growth. So what lotion should you use? I have tried many lotions or foot creams and I will give you what I feel are the best. But lotions and creams are like just about anything else, they work for some better than others. You need to choose the lotion that is best for you. I am just giving you my suggestions. Eucerin (http://amzn.to/2gSCpku) – Most any Eucerin product is good for the feet. They do make a “Foot Repair Cream” that is very good. Gold Bond (http://amzn.to/2gSCULD) – Now before you dismiss Gold Bond because of the scent of their powder, they have a new fresh scent for their lotions. Gold Bond makes a great product called Gold Bond Ultimate Foot. It contains 7 moisturizers and does a great job keeping your feet hydrated. O’Keeffe’s (http://amzn.to/2gRQqkg) – O’Keeffe’s makes an excellent product called “For Healthy Feet.” It uses a high concentration of glycerin to maintain healthy moisture. AmLactin (http://amzn.to/2hrLnWv) —Of all I have tried, this is the best for me. It has no odor, it doesn’t leave my feet greasy and really keeps my feet soft. I hope this answered your question what foot lotion should I use. Don’t forget to get your diabetes management book. Let me know if you have any other diabetes related questions.

From base change to better care in diabetes - archived livestream

01:05:10
Royal Society GlaxoSmithKline Lecture 2016 by Professor Andrew Hattersley FMedSci FRS. Diabetes affects over 4 million people in the UK but there are still many uncertainties about the causes and best treatment approaches for this common condition. Professor Andrew Hattersley FRS will show how, for patients with pure genetic diabetes, defining the specific causes of a patient’s diabetes has resulted in dramatic improvements in their treatment. These findings have changed the management of patients born with diabetes or with strongly familial diabetes throughout the world and have led to molecular genetic testing becoming a first line clinical investigation. The fundamental principle of this Precision Medicine approach is that defining discrete aetiological subgroups of patients within a broader clinical diagnosis can improve clinical care for patients. The next challenge is to use 'Precision Diabetes' to define different subtypes of the common forms of diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2) and to use this information to improve care. Early work suggests that there are genuine differences between patients with the same clinical diagnosis and these do alter the response to diabetes treatments. Eye Care and Diabetes

02:53
Download Diabetes Management Book: http://bit.ly/2g0NDAH Hello, I'm Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com, researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I'm going to answer the question, why is eye care important for those with diabetes. But before we get into that, make sure you download my free diabetes management book which also includes a diabetes grocery shopping guide (foods to eat and avoid). Your eyes are very important to you, aren’t they? For just 5 seconds close your eyes and think what it would be like to live without them. For those of us with diabetes, our eyes are at risk of a disease called diabetic retinopathy. This can happen as prolonged exposure to high blood glucose weakens the walls of the blood vessels in the eyes. The tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina can no longer function properly causing severe damage. In regards to diabetic retinopathy there are 2 forms. Proliferative and nonproliferative are the 2 forms. Basically proliferative is the more advanced stage of the disease. The Joslin Diabetes Center has some great tips for eye care. Monitor changes in your vision. Be sure to visit to your eye care professional at least every year. You can also make a note of vision changes on a daily basis. Keep you A1C under 7. This is very important. For more about A1C you can visit our video “What is A1C.” If you can keep your blood glucose in this target range it will cause less damage to the delicate blood vessels around your eyes. Believe it or not, controlling your blood pressure is part of your self care plan with diabetes and is crucial in eye care. The combination of high blood pressure and high A1C can wreak havoc on your vision. The target blood pressure for those with diabetes is 130/80 or under. This will decrease the chances of you having major eye problems. Be sure to visit your eye care professional on a regular basis. And don’t hesitate to call your eye care professional if you experience any of the following: blurred vision, floating spots in your visual field, flashing lights, or unusual eye pain. I hope this answered your question is why is eye care important for those with diabetes. Don’t forget to get your diabetes management book. Let me know if you have any other diabetes related questions.

Alcohol and Diabetes: What To Know

03:18
Can people with diabetes enjoy alcoholic beverages? The answer is yes, if they follow a few simple guidelines-- learn how to safely enjoy alcohol and still stay healthy with diabetes. For more great information about type 2 diabetes, sign up for our free email program at www.DiabetesWhatToKnow.com/sign-up/ Transcript: It's a common question-- can people with diabetes still drink alcoholic beverages? The short answer is yes, but you need to make smart choices and understand the impact that alcohol can have on your blood sugar. According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes should follow the same guidelines for alcohol consumption as people without diabetes, which are: Women should have no more than 1 drink per day and men should have no more than 2 drinks per day. Always check with your doctor first to see what is right for you. One drink is equal to a 12 oz. beer, a 5 oz. glass of wine or 1.5 oz. spirits or hard liquor. Alcoholic beverages are broken into four categories-- spirits, beer, wine, and liqueurs and each category has a different effect on blood sugar. Spirits include gin, rum, tequila, whisky, and vodka. For all practical purposes, they have no carbohydrate count, so they don’t raise blood sugar. In fact, they can actually cause a low blood sugar in people who are on certain diabetes medications which is why you want to talk to your doctor about alcohol. But for most people, in appropriate quantities, they pose no problems when consumed straight-up or on the rocks. The problem comes with mixed drinks because many mixers have lots of sugar which can cause your blood sugar to go too high. The solution for diabetes-friendly mixed drinks is to use sugar free mixers. For instance, a rum and diet coke would be a much better choice than rum and regular coke. The good news is that you can find low-carb versions of many commercial mixers. Always check the nutrition facts label of whatever you’re drinking to check the carbohydrate count so you know what impact it will have on your blood sugar. Beers and ales have a greater carb and calorie content than many other alcoholic drinks. This makes them both more likely to raise blood sugar and cause weight gain which is another reason for moderation! If you are a beer drinker struggling with weight, consider switching to a lighter beer. Liqueurs like amaretto and Kahlua have high levels of added sugar and need to be consumed in small quantities by people with diabetes. Red and white wines have very few carbs and they won’t raise your blood sugar. There is some evidence that moderate consumption of alcohol can be beneficial to both your heart and your cholesterol. This doesn’t mean that you should start drinking if you currently don’t, but it does mean that you should feel comfortable if you are regularly enjoying moderate alcohol consumption. Finally, one word of warning about alcohol. Alcohol is metabolized by your liver, and doing this can keep your liver busy. Busy enough, sometimes, that it isn’t as efficient about releasing its stored glucose when needed. This is why drinking heavily without eating can cause low blood sugar which can be really dangerous. It is always a good idea to combine alcohol with some type of snack or food that contain carbs. And if you struggle with drinking too much, please get help. Everything in moderation is the key to successful diabetes control. So now you know what you need to know. Yes, you can drink alcohol with diabetes. You just need to do three things: 1) Keep your consumption moderate—one drink per day for women, two drinks per day for men. 2) Choose low carb options 3) If you are keeping track of carbs, then remember to include the carbs are in your drink into your carb budget for that meal. Top 10 Foods for Diabetes Control

05:38
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. Symptoms of high blood sugar include frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger. If left untreated, diabetes can cause many serious long-term complications include heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney failure, foot ulcers, and damage to the eyes. What you eat can help you to control and fight your diabetes. Research proves that making a few key changes to your diet such as eating more produce, fewer refined carbohydrates, plenty of lean protein can help in improving your blood-sugar and cuts the risk of diabetes-related complications. Certain foods are packed with nutrients that stabilise blood sugar levels, protect your heart, and even save your vision from the damaging effects of diabetes. These top 10 foods can help you in controlling Diabetes. Spinach The American Diabetes Association calls spinach a diabetes super food and recommends that you regularly include this dark green leafy non-starchy vegetable in your diet. Besides being rich in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, spinach possesses a low glycemic index, which means eating it will help support healthy and stable blood glucose levels. Spinach is low in carbohydrates, containing only 0.83 grams per cup. The fact that spinach contains so few carbohydrates makes it an excellent choice on a diabetes diet. Broccoli Broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane, which triggers several anti-inflammatory processes that improve blood sugar control and protect blood vessels from the cardiovascular damage that’s often a consequence of diabetes. Olive oil Olive oil is recognized as one of the healthiest edible oils since it contains less saturated fats. It is rich in Omega 9 and Omega 3 which help maintain the flexibility of blood vessels, allowing good blood flow. Olive oil, especially extra virgin, contains tyrosol phenolic compounds such as oleuropein and oleocanthal. These compounds are nature’s most powerful anti-oxidants. Sweet potatoes Sweet potatoes are a good carbohydrate choice for diabetics. The glycemic index of sweet potatoes is a lot lower, which is better for diabetes control, according to a 2002 article in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Eating sweet potatoes in moderate amounts will help you keep your blood sugar levels in the healthy range even if you have diabetes. Avocados Avocados are an excellent choice for people with diabetes because they are very rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals and packed with numerous health benefiting plant nutrients. Blueberries Blueberries contain both insoluble fiber (which “flushes” fat out of your system) and soluble fiber (which slows down the emptying of your stomach, and improves blood sugar control). It also contain a natural plant compound known as anthocyanins. Scientists believe these may help lower blood sugar by boosting insulin production. Tomatoes Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin K. They are also a very good source of, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, chromium, and vitamin B1. Because of their low carbohydrate content, tomatoes can play a big role in controlling blood sugar levels. The low carbohydrate content also helps lower calorie intake and can help diabetics to lose weight. Eggs Eggs are a versatile food and a great source of protein, and the American Diabetes Association considers eggs an excellent choice for people with diabetes. Cinnamon Cinnamon spice has the highest anti-oxidant strength of all the food sources in nature. Many studies show that consumption of one teaspoon cinnamon to three teaspoons a day has a positive effect on reducing blood glucose levels. It was found that the cinnamon can make your cells more sensitive to insulin. Dates Dates are a great choice for a person with diabetes as they can help control sugar cravings, and they are low on the glycemic index. The carbohydrates in dates provide instant energy, and the high fiber contained in dates is good for digestion. This sweet desert fruit is cholesterol and fat free therefore, they serve as a great snack item. Many essential disease protective minerals are also present in dates.
