The Permaculture Food Forest - Plant Once- Harvest for a Lifetime. How It Works.

56:22
No Weeding- No Watering- No Pesticides- No GMOs- No Fertilizers- Ever! How the Secret Garden of Survival Works. Imagine a food garden that you only have to plant once in your life-time, that takes up very little space, that will provide food for you and your family for the next 30 years; that can grow five times more food per square foot than traditional gardening; and where you never have to weed, never have to water- never have to use fertilizers and never have to use pesticide-- ever. And the whole garden is disguised to look like overgrown underbrush, so that anyone passing by would not even dream that you had food growing there! Interested? That is what Rick Austin is going to talk to you about. …It’s the essential homestead and prepper food source that can provide you with all the fruit, vegetables, herbs, nuts and berries, that you and your family can consume in a year. Find out how Rick Austin took a half-acre southern slope in North Carolina and turned it from red clay into a “food forest” in one year. Rick Austin is known as the Survivalist Gardener, and is a preparedness, homesteading and off grid living expert. He is the author of Secret Garden of Survival-How to Grow a Camouflaged Food Forest which is now the #1 Best Selling book in Garden Design. Rick is also the author of the Secret Greenhouse of Survival, How to Build the Ultimate Homestead and Prepper Greenhouse. Rick is a nationally recognized speaker on survival preparedness and has been featured on National Geographic Channel’s Doomsday Castle, Doomsday Preppers, the documentary film Beyond Off Grid, as well as in Newsweek, American Survival Guide, Prepper &Shooter, Prepare Magazine, and in Mother Earth News (three times). Make $100,000 per Acre with Beyond Sustainable No Till Farming a Year

01:00:24
John from http://www.growingyourgreens.com/ shares with you the No Till Farming 102 Workship that took place at the 2016 Eco Farm Conference where Paul Kaiser is able to make $100,000 gross per acre per year on on his farm. In this episode, you will learn the benefits of using No Till Farming which includes significantly higher income per acre than other types of farming, regenerating the soil, capturing more carbon in the soil, creating year round jobs, producing high quality food, encouraging local flora and fauna. First, John will share how he uses no-till farming techniques in his no-till garden at home. Next, Paul, will share important information on why every farm should start doing no-till farming, its benefits and how the US goverment even promotes no-till farming as the best way to farm to conserve and restore the farm land in the USA. You will discover why Soil Organic Matter continues to decrease in the USA and why current agriculture systems are destroying the soil. You will learn about studies that support this information. You will discover why tilling is so bad for your soil, and you should never do it. You will discover the best soil management strategies to restore and build the soil to levels even BETTER than they were before we starting farming the land. You will also discover how to start a no-till farming field, as well as how to maintain it. Next, John will share the most important slides from the No Till Farming Workship. You will discover some of the most important of a no-till farming operation, including how 3 people can replant and turn over 3 garden beds in 1 hour. You will also discover why transplants are used instead of starting seeds and why it is so important to start from transplants. Next, you will learn the tools that are used to do no-till farming. You will learn the best materials to build a long lasting, no-snag garden benches. You will discover the seed starting mixture and about different types of compost that is used in this notill farming system. You will discover the importance of diversity of growing different types of plants, natives, pollinator crops, hedgerows, and more in a no-till farming system. You will also learn how no till farming is MORE profitable than conventional and even standard organic agriculture. Finally you will discover how notill farming done in a proper manor is the parmount of enviornmental sustainability, can help to sequester carbon in the soil, provide economic prosperity, as well as be social just and responsible. In the end, you will learn that No Till Farming is one of the best farming techniques that can help to solve the food crisis, economic crisis and soil crisis that is the word is currently experiencing today. Gardens, Truck Patches, and Fields - What on Earth am I Doing? - The FHC Show, ep 13

21:32
There are as many different views of what a garden or farm is, as there are farmers and gardeners. And a lot of it has to do with one's culture, experience, or perspective. There are numerous classifications for gardeners, farmers, and the agriculture they practice these days (homesteader, commercial, organic, community supported agriculture, subsistence, permaculture, natural, sustainable agriculture) and all kinds of places to practice these methods (homestead, commercial farm, organic farm, subsistence farm, mini farm, micro farm, hobby farm, cottage farm, small farm). Farming and gardening is becoming popular again, but knowing where you fit in to this vast world of farms and farming methods is the first step in knowing what you’re trying to accomplish on your farm or in your garden. In this 13th episode of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac explores these things—giving historical perspective along the way—while presenting some of the handicaps he'll be overcoming with his own farm and garden. You'll learn the differences between a garden, a truck patch, and a field. Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!) Also visit http://www.farmhandscompanion.com to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books or DVD's by Pa Mac.)

Edible Acres - Garden Tour during very dry summer - polycultures and deep mulch rules!

12:05
http://www.edibleacres.org Walking tour of the established perennial garden at Edible Acres discussing strategies and plantings and management that has led to a relatively worry free garden of perennial hardy plants. We are experiencing a very dry summer so far: http://flxweather.com/2016/06/23/near-drought-conditions-expand-across-new-york/ - This is nothing like the southwest, I know, but it is approaching a historical dryness for this region. Our farm operates exclusively on captured rainwater and human scale work, so this is a huge huge test so far. The plants and soil and rich deep relationships made amongst them all are really astounding to see how well they can handle this... Edible Acres is a full service permaculture nursery located in the Finger Lakes area of NY state. We grow all layers of perennial food forest systems and provide super hardy, edible, useful, medicinal, easy to propagate, perennial plants for sale locally or for shipping around the country... http://www.edibleacres.org/purchase - Your order supports the research and learning we share here on youtube. We also offer consultation and support in our region or remotely. http://www.edibleacres.org/services Happy growing!

Grow a No Till & No Water Vegetable Garden with Little Effort

56:16
John from http://www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to share with you a garden that doesn't get watered the whole season and is never tilled. You will also learn how this garden grows with little labor effort as well. In this episode, John visits Rory, one of his viewer's gardens to give you a tour of an amazing no till, no water vegetable garden that grows throughout the summer season without getting watered. It also grows with little effort on the part of the homeowner. Furthermore, the homeowner does not rototill his garden every year and speaks out against tilling. First, John will show you the front yard and how edibles have been incorporated into the front yard without looking out of place for the neighborhood. Next, John will take you on a tour of the backyard garden where you will learn the power of wood chips as well as compost and how it allows Rory to grow a garden without tilling and without watering the entire season. You will discover some of the tips that allow Rory to accomplish this feat, which includes selecting certain plant varieties and building his soil in a very specific way. You will learn several techniques you can use to increase moisture-holding capacity of your soil so you can water your garden less. You will learn how wood chips break down to form a rich "black gold" or fungal dominated compost and how to prune your tree so you can achieve maximum yield. Furthermore, you will learn the one berry bush that you should grow and ignore for the most bountiful harvests. Finally, John will interview Rory, the gardener to share with you his expertise on how he makes this garden work without much effort. You will discover the specific ingredients that Rory adds to his garden to have amazing results without watering. John will ask Rory the following questions: 31:45 How I ended up filming this video today? 33:00 What motivated you to grow a no-till vegetable garden? 35:12 Why is rock dust so important and why is it a key ingredient in your garden? 37:32 How do you active the trace minerals with compost tea? 38:32 What is Aloe Vera and Why do you add it to your garden? 42:23 Why don't you have powdery mildew or other diseases in your garden? 45:39 What happened to your kale plants that were watered with aloe and without? 46:27 How often should someone apply the aloe and compost tea to their plants? 47:42 Why is it important to model nature and not add chemical fertilizers to your garden? 50:32 What pests did you get when you originally brought in wood chips? 53:18 Any last words of wisdom to my viewers? After watching this episode, you will discover many techniques you can use in your garden to water less, do less work and till no more. He and his wife Beth moved to New Zealand, where they’re in the process of turning green-desert farmland into a productive and bountiful forest of food. It’s incredible to see how much they’re harvesting after just three years. Potato Growing Hack to Double Harvests

02:49
potatoes are one of my favorite crops to grow and harvest in my urban garden. Today I am going to show you how I grow my potatoes and double my harvest without having to increase the number of grow bags or space needed. I start my potatoes in grow bags in the garage usually 4 weeks before the last frost usually in early April. I fill the bags with 1/2 potting mix and 1/2 compost. The compost feeds the plants while the potting mix holds water. I fill them 3/4 the way full. I then toss a whole seed potato in the soil and just cover it completely. If the eyes are large enough I allow some of the eyes to poke above the soil. Those eyes will form the plant. The extra bag is fairly easy to roll down helping to prevent shading the early growth. it is important to start your potatoes as early as you can in order for this method to work. During the day I bring the potatoes out onto the drive way returning them at night until the last frost. Once the threat of frost has passed I put them in the garden area. When the plants are 30cm or 12 inches tall I add more compost and potting soil to mound them. This protects the potatoes growing below from greening which ruins them and can cause irritation if eaten. I don't fill the bags however all of the way though and you will see why in a minute. Before I get to the tip to double the potato harvest I would like to speak about potatoes in general. Most seed potatoes you can purchase such as these Rosemarie, which are pink and Purple Magic are determinant varieties. What that means is you plant them and they put on one crop all at the same time. The rosemarie potatoes are a faster producing than the purple magic helping me spread the harvests out. I should be able to harvest these from Mid-July through to late September. In order to spread out the harvest and double up on crops I have done a few things. The first is doubling up on the crop I get per bag. These two varieties are determinant so the first plant I just hilled will only produce one crop below where we hilled up the soil. Meaning you can plant another seed potato above the first effectively allowing you to double up your plants per container and hence the harvest. So when hilling I don't fill the bags all the way and plant the second seed potato again with some eyes pointing up. After these plants grow I will top off the containers. I dont do this with all of my potato bags. In fact I chose these 11 litre or 3 gallon 100 percent recycled fabric pots so that I can harvest them earlier than the ones I doubled up on. As you all know I love to spread my harvest out. It is time to harvest the double bags when the second plant begins to die back. This method can be done if you are growing your potatoes in raised beds or rows. Simply hill your potatoes and plant the new seeds between the plants. Family of 7 Living Completely Off-Grid in Northern Canada!

10:09
In this video, we meet Jeff, Rose, and their 5 girls who are living completely off grid on a 40-acre piece of land in Northern British Columbia, Canada. They built their own off-grid house for less than $25,000 with cedar posts sunk into the ground like a pole barn, log rafters, plywood, foam insulation, and a living roof. The house was so affordable to build because they didn't have to excavate or pour a concrete foundation, dig a well, or install a septic system. They have 2 solar power systems to power everything they need. The first solar system is just one solar panel that generates 12-Volt power for their lights, cell phones, and music player. The larger system is a 2.5 Kilowatt solar power system installed on their shop roof with a lithium ion battery bank that powers their full-sized fridge, a chest freezer, washing machine, as well as a mixer, blender and a toaster. They have a backup generator but they only have to use it for about 40 hours per year during prolonged cloudy or snowy periods. All of the water the family uses is rainwater collected from their shop roof and stored in a tank under the shop floor to keep it cool. They carry buckets of water into the house for cooking, dishes and showers. To produce clean drinking water, they filter their rainwater in a passive water filter called a Burkey (check them out here: http://www.berkeyfilters.com). The grey water from their kitchen sink and shower drains into a shallow grey water field in the backyard. They have 2 composting bucket toilets and they sprinkle sawdust into the buckets after each use to absorb moisture and prevent smells. For heat, they cut their own firewood for their Blaze King catalytic wood stove, and for their antique cookstove in the kitchen that they use for cooking and baking. Jeff and Rose homeschool their 5 girls for a few hours each day and also ensure that their kids are learning diverse life skills like growing their own food, caring for horses, raising bees, and more. We're very impressed with the clever solutions this family has come up with to make off-grid living seem so easy. If you want to learn more about this inspiring family and follow their journey, check out their Gridlessness project — they have a blog and a YouTube channel. Why not replace modern agriculture with market gardening? As you know, the problems with modern agriculture are numerous, but the solutions, not so much. Local organic market gardening agriculture can (and will) transform society in positive ways, but the limiting factor is the number of people willing to make a change for their community. Our world needs more small-scale farmers who have an interest in market gardening – like you. Market Gardening for a living? Feeding people locally is hard work, but it can be part of a fulfilling lifestyle with a deep sense of connection with the land, family and your community, says Jean-Martin Fortier, a pioneer in the field of Market Gardening. J-M’s low-tech strategy kept his start-up costs to a minimum, and overhead expenses low. The farm became profitable after only a few years, now with revenues north of $140,000 and margins over 50% --- and that is on only an acre and a half --- he claims they have never felt the pinch of financial pressure with his market garden business. I’ll say. Farmers Markets on a serious rise, numbers growing rapidly - How to Make Money on a Small Farm - Since USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service began tracking farmers’ markets in 1994, the number of markets in the United States has grown from 1,755 to 8,144 in 2013, an increase of about 4 percent from the previous year. The states with the most farmers' markets include California (759), New York (637), Illinois (336), Michigan (331) and Ohio (300). Total annual sales at U.S. farmers' markets are estimated at $1 billion. Kentucky hasnt even touched the tip of the iceberg yet --- this is the opportunity to grow quickly and be the authority in Market Gardening. Why Market Gardening and Farmers Markets? A farmers' market allows growers the opportunity to market directly to consumers without dealing with a food broker. Growers can explain how the food is grown and educate consumers on how to prepare it. What do I do when it isn’t summer season? Most farmers' markets are operated on a seasonal basis, opening in the spring and closing in the fall. However, there are year-round markets and they are generally found on the West Coast, southeast and southwest United States. Top 5 things you need to do to run a successful Small Farm Market Garden as a business: 1 – Purchase a market garden property that has a conducive layout to growing, has great soil, access to live water and has HUGE growth potential ------ CHECK 2 – Purchase the equipment to run this market garden as a business – not just getting by, but real equipment that is sized properly. Planting Garden ~ Homestead Cleanup ~ Packages Arrived

25:15
We got some more plants on sale for our garden and put them right in. We are still cleaning up the homestead. And some packages arrived. We picked up some vegetable plants on sale the other day so we put them right into the garden. We now have 36 tomato plants out there in total. Plus cabbage, various types of peppers, corn, and much more. We picked up 22 pounds of seed potatoes on sale for 49 cents a pound and cut them in halves for planting. We let them dry out a bit on the cut parts for a while before planting them. This should give us between 300 - 500 pounds of fresh potatoes for the next year. We can sell what we cannot use ourselves. We are still cleaning up the homestead. We hope to have it all finished within a couple weeks. At this rate, we may succeed. Some packages arrived in the mail for Melanie and I. Thank you very much for sending them. We hope to have a garden plot this year with all types of heirloom vegetables so that we can keep them going from seed to perpetuate the seeds. Thanks for watching. Homestead Gardening ~ Enjoying Harvest ~ Off Grid Solar

13:39
Work on the off grid homestead garden continues but we are also enjoying the fruit of our labors with each dinner in our tiny house on wheels. The solar power system is doing well. I found a truck load of free pallets and brought them home. We use pallets for many things around here from kitchen cabinets to fencing to building sheds and much more. We only use HT = Heat Treated pallets out here at the off grid homestead. Later I got another load of mulch from the decaying mulch pile and put it along one of the pathways between the garden rows. I hope to mulch all the pathways to prevent weeds, retain moisture and provide nutrients for the garden. Melanie has been harvesting various foods from the garden every day now. She loves to eat fresh vegetables from our own garden and often cooks with our own produce now. We eat whatever is ripe each day. Soon more and more vegetables are going to be ready and we will be overloaded with fresh produce from our own off grid homestead garden. The new power inverter is serving us well. I have not turned off the inverter or the internet since it was installed by Phillip on his visit about a week earlier. I am cutting oak slabs from a tree I cut down to use as pavers for a garden walkway from the tiny house to the garden. The walkway will be about three pavers wide and fill the area along the walkway. I will put mulch in between the pavers to prevent weed growth. This will take some time though and I will be cutting the oak slabs in my free time and during cooler hours of the day. We received a package in the mail from our friend Bison from YouTube. His channel is Buggingin and he reviews survival gear and loves to explore the outdoors. We got two AC powered fans that we can use for the tiny house on wheels. Melanie was very excited about the fans. Thank you Bison. We also got a whole bunch of survival gear including a Leatherman for each of us. I plan to go through the package and some of the survival items in more detail later. Thanks for watching.
