00:35
Now, women have their own Viagra called Addyi. The first drug meant to boost sexual desire in women. US Food and Drug Administration has finally given a green signal to the pill, which they had twice rejected due to insignificant benefits and worrisome side effects. This approval marks a milestone, long sought by the pharmaceutical industry. The drug has been developed by Sprout, a pharmaceutical company based in Raleigh, North Carolina. PAKISTAN: VIAGRA FINDS ITS WAY ONTO THE BLACK MARKET

02:57
Urdu/Eng/Nat Doctors in Pakistan are warning of the dangers of men buying the impotence pill Viagra on the black market and taking it without prescription. The sale of the drug in the country is currently being debated by the government - it says it wants to make sure the drug will be made available in the safest possible way. But medical experts say the problem of impotency is high in the country and that men are anxious to try out supplies of Viagra introduced illegally at a high price. Viagra, the impotency pill, is proving to be big business in Pakistan. The drug, first released in the U-S in March 1998, is legally available in more than 50 countries worldwide. Many people consider it the beginning of a new revolution in pharmaceuticals. In Pakistan, the government is currently discussing when and how to introduce the drug. But Viagra has already found its way onto the black market in the country's capital Islamabad and can be bought at a high price. One tablet can cost anything from 20 to 50 U-S dollars - a bottle of Viagra tablets can cost anything from 360 to 800 U-S dollars. Some Viagra users say the drug has been freely available to them for some time now and that they're prepared to pay up. SOUNDBITE: (Urdu) "Viagra is a sex drug and I have been using it for about two years and found it very good, because it adds energy to the body if we use it two hours before sexual intercourse. I have found no other medicine better than Viagra and the demand for it is now growing." SUPER CAPTION: Abdul Qadir, Viagra user The country's health department has so far been reluctant to legalise Viagra - but it is aware of the black market problem and is prosecuting anyone found selling the drug. Government officials say they want to make sure that there are no loopholes before Viagra is legally available in Pakistan. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In the West they know that this drug has got side effects and that it is a prescription drug. So nobody can buy it without prescription, while in Pakistan we still have some loopholes, some weaknesses where the drug can be sold over the counter and this is my main worry in resisting to register it." SUPER CAPTION: Professor Ghayyur H. Ayub, Director General of Health Ministry There have been worries that Viagra may have side effects. But Pfizer, the company that produces Viagra, maintains the drug is a safe medicine for erectile dysfunction when used as recommended in the approved package insert. There are already many legal drugs on sale in Pakistan to help enhance sex. Herbal doctors offer remedies for impotency, claiming they're natural products that have no side effects. The herbal remedy sellers can often be found on roadsides doing a roaring trade - but even they now say that the new wonder drug is threatening their trade. Medical experts say there is no official impotency figure in the country because Pakistani men are reluctant to admit they have a problem in a nation where sex is a taboo subject. But doctors say it is an ever increasing problem and they are warning of the dangers of taking the impotence pill without prescription. Doctor Khalid Saeed said it is even more of a worry as impotency affects men of all ages. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There are two basic main groups in which we can find this who come to us commonly. One is the younger age group - they are really people in their early 20s and the other group is somewhere in the late 40s and 50s and both of them have different presentations. People in the younger age group generally come to you just before they are about to get married." SUPER CAPTION: Dr Khalid Saeed, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Institute of Psychiatry, Rawalpindi In the meantime, they are encouraging people to seek alternative remedies. Noodling 'Round With Viagra

01:20
I'm lying in bed late one night and again see the ubiquitous Viagra commercial where a woman states she'd rather have a man in bed than a book. Having several women friends who had confidentially said the opposite, I realize this might make a terrific video parody. So I get up and start writing knowing the most important visual catchphrase, a woman in bed with her knees bent, would be my opening. But who would I cast as the actress? I had hired a woman (Delores Bernardi) to do my filing several months earlier. The first comment I had made as she walked into my loft was: "Wow, what a commercial face you have." Plus, her voice reminded me of the wonderful Brenda Vaccaro's. So I talked Dee into doing the video despite her many fears that she would never remember lines, hated being in front of a camera, had no showbiz aspirations. My instincts were correct. She did a fantastic job. The reason for creating "Noodling 'Round With Viagra" is to gain attention, as a writer, to enable me to sell my film scripts. As a former professional photographer, magazine writer, and now script writer, my soon to be 78 years is an obstacle. Of course I create characters who are older such as in my comedy Teach Me Tonight, a naughty comedy about two women, in their early 50s, who hire a faux gay man, to teach them what they've long forgotten about sex. Hey, I want to see films without violence and raw sex -- I can get this on local news. PHILIPPINES: VIAGRA GOES ON SALE NATIONWIDE

03:27
Tagalog/Eng/Nat Viagra, the headline grabbing anti-impotency pill, is now on sale in the Philippines. Pfizer, who manufacture the drug, have started delivering to local drugstores in Manila, two weeks after the local Bureau of Food and Drug gave its approval for its sale in the country. Pharmacies in the Philippines have finally begun to receive their stocks of Viagra. The manufacturer Pfizer, started deliveries of the new wonder drug at drugstores in Manila this week. Some stores already began selling the drug on Tuesday. With Viagra becoming the talk of the town, drugstore owners are anticipating a huge demand. Pharmacy owner Bhoyette Vizconde sold five tablets on the first day. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I already hoard (laughs) stocks because I'm really expecting that being the first to have Viagra here in our vicinity, I'm sure a lot of people will come here and inquire or buy Viagra." SUPER CAPTION: Bhoyette Vizconde, Owner of Marcelo's Pharmacy Pharmacy Plus received its first supply early this week. Owner James Sandoval, who owns several stores in the capital, put a few boxes of the pill on the shelf to show clients that the drug is now available. But before the drug was put on sale in his stores, Sandoval issued a memo to all his store managers to ensure that safety precautions are practiced before the drug is dispensed to patients. The B-F-A-D says it is important the pill is only sold to patients who come with a legitimate prescription from their doctors. Each pill comes with a leaflet giving warnings of possible side-effects if the drug is not taken properly. Pfizer warned that the drug should not be taken by people being treated with nitrate-based medication for heart problems. While he expects a huge demand for the drug, Sandoval said Filipino men may be a little shy of asking for the drug themselves. He says the men here will probably not want to admit they need Viagra and so he is arranging a home delivery service to put them out of their misery. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Because maybe at the secrecy of their own home, they can acquire the product because they might be too embarrassed to come forward to admit that they have a sexual problem. Any person that comes forward asking about the product - they're so defensive, they say right away "Hey listen I don't have a problem with this. I'm just inquiring". That goes to tell you how sensitive the issue is." SUPER CAPTION: James Sandoval, Owner of A-B Sandoval Drugstore Dr. Jesus Mendoza is a local doctor who has been checking out the testing of the Viagra drug. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well, I was pretty excited and wanted to find out whether it was really going to work. Of course, there was some degree of skepticism at first. But when we started seeing back the patients who were on the study, then it was confirmed that my gosh, this works." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Jesus Mendoza, Urologist In a press conference early this month, Pfizer said the approval from B-F-A-D came after they completed a six-month study of its effects on 500 men from six Asian countries, including the Philippines. The man who discovered Viagra, Dr. Peter Ellis, was in Manila last week and spoke of how his drug differs from the others already available in the market. SOUNDBITE: (English) "And I think the beauty of the drug is that it works to enhance the natural process. All the other products that are out there, you take the product, you get an erection. But Viagra, you take the product, you don't get an erection but it's only when sexually aroused. So it's basically enhancing a perfectly natural function and restoring it back to normal." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Peter Ellis, Discoverer of Viagra SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog) You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/82332744ffb865c4de45bb3f42e9c31f Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

INDIA: PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES RACE TO PRODUCE A VIAGRA CLONE

02:52
Hindi/English/Nat Viagra may have made a sensational debut on the Western market but a different kind of competition awaits the anti-impotence pill in India. Favourable patent laws have spurred a race among the Indian pharmaceutical companies to produce a Viagra clone. However, India's traditional doctors have snubbed the Viagra hype, claiming their ancient herbal sex potions are far more potent - and cheaper - than any modern day pill. The race for the Indian version of Viagra is on. Just months after the anti-impotency pill hit the Western world, dozens of Indian versions of the drug are waiting for approval by the Indian government. India is one of world's largest drug industries but it only recognises process patents. This has prompted "copycats" to try to develop a slightly different process to make a Viagra clone. Presently, about 10 Indian pharmaceutical companies are in the race to process Sildenafil Citrate - the active ingredient in the Viagra wonder pill. The competition is so fierce that some companies have already started exporting the ingredient - even though they are still waiting for permission to market the product locally. What's driving these companies is a potential market of one (b) billion people - and that means big dollars. SOUNDBITE ( English) "As far as Indian companies are concerned, I am talking of established companies, definitely they will come up with very high quality. And price advantage will be there, it is definite... it is almost certain." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. S Sarangan, Kopran Limited In the land of Kama Sutra, sexual inadequacies have long been treated by ancient medical wisdom. On the streets of the Indian capital, hundreds of pavement doctors line the streets peddling traditional cures for impotence. For these roadside doctors, a strong belief in the potency of their magic potions is more important than conducting clinical trials. They claim their remedies offer vigour and vitality - using the rejuvenating properties of well known Indian herbs. These traditional remedies feature heavily in Indian folklore about Mughal emperors and kings who relied on herbal aphrodisiacs to keep their numerous wives satisfied. What's more - they're incredibly cheap. For a country where the problem lies more in ignorance than impotence, traditional alternatives are generally favoured. Sex clinics which offer indigenous cures boast a roaring trade. Run by a family of sexologists who practise traditional medicine, Sablok clinic has been in the business for nearly 70 years. Dr. Sablok scoffs at the hype created by Viagra and says the Indian masses just can't afford the expensive blue pill. SOUNDBITE ( English) "Making that person feel the pleasure out of a pill which you have given him at that moment and which.....obviously its expensive - I mean every other fellow can't afford it. So next time if he doesn't have that much money or he can't spend that much of amount , where does he go ?" SUPER CAPTION : Dr. Vikram Sablok , Sexologist India's lucrative sex-tonic market has attracted dozens of companies aggressively marketing various brands of attractively packaged, indigenous sex-elixirs. Advocates say Viagra can do no damage to their profitable trade - simply because their medication is without any side effects. SOUNDBITE (English) "We have very potent herbs and remedies which can definitely match Viagra - no doubt about it. In fact I should say that hopefully we will be a step ahead of them." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Vikram Sablok, Sexologist In India's commercial capital, Bombay, Viagra is likely to face competition of a different kind. The current big seller is known as the "bed-breaker" thanks to its aphrodisiac additives. See What Happened To This 74 Year Old Man After He Took Two Viagra Tablets – Ray Boddington

02:48
READ MORE: http://nollygrio.com/?p=885 A 74 year old man took TWO tablets of Viagra, at once. He took it because he wanted to sexually impress during a night of passion with a woman almost 50 years his junior, but things didn’t quite go according to plan Retired hairdresser Ray Boddington, 74, had picked up the pills from a friend in his local pub after scoring with the 27-year old woman, Mirror has told us. But as he left her apartment after a night of nookie, Ray was taken ill at a bus stop with major heart palpitations and an ambulance had to be called. As he lay in the back of the ambulance a paramedic treating the father of six told him: ‘It’s coming down” only to then add: ”I’m talking about your blood pressure’’. Tests showed Ray had a high blood pressure reading of 157/88 – a normal reading shouldn’t be above 140/90. His heart was also beating at a high rate of 102 beats per minute – above the regular 60-100 beats. The pensioner, from Salford, Greater Manchester – a former contestant on The X Factor – was allowed to stay in the vehicle until his heart rate went back to normal. He did not require any hospital treatment over the incident on October 25. Ray said: “The paramedics told me you shouldn’t take two and I want to pass on that warning that it can make you ill, it can make your blood pressure go sky high or you could have a heart attack. ”It was only two hours after taking the tablets when I began began to feel faint. I could my heart pounding in my chest and the blood rushing from my head. I thought I was having a heart attack and I was going to die.” “Imagine if someone dies because no-one has spoken about the dangers. People shy away from the subject. It took around 24 hours for things to go back to normal.” “In the ambulance the paramedic said, ‘it’s coming down’, I said ‘it doesn’t feel like it’s coming down’, she said, ‘no, I’m talking about your blood pressure’. Lol. What kind of wahala will sex not cause in this world?

The Truth Behind the 'Female Viagra'

WOMAN 3: A silent wall of shame grew between us IGOR VOLSKY: These women suffer from lack of sexual desire and now a new pill developed by Sprout Pharmaceuticals could help jump start their libido. JAMES SIMON: This has been under the radar, hidden, most women are just sucking it up, so to speak. IGOR VOLSKY: After years with no FDA-approved solutions, Flibanserin -- popularly known as “the female Viagra” -- may finally provide women with treatment. In fact, women’s health groups have joined with the pharmaceutical company to create a new campaign called Even The Score. That campaign is lobbying the FDA to approve Flibanserin. It's about time, right? CINDY PEARSON: Even The Score is full of lies, knowing willful lies. IGOR VOLSKY: One such lie, the campaign strongly implies the drug is similar to Viagra, but that's not true at all. Men take the little blue pill when they want to have sex to increase blood flow to the penis. Women would have to take Flibanserin daily -- and that pill works to convince the brain to desire sex. Also, as one of the doctors advising the FDA told us, this drug isn’t for nearly any women. CALEB ALEXANDER: In general medicine, in my clinical practice of 15 years, I’ve never met a woman that fulfills the formal diagnostic criteria for this disorder. IGOR VOLSKY: And for the few pre-menopausal women who do qualify, they would have to make some major life changes. The only way I could take this product as a woman is: I have to stop drinking, I have to get off my prescription birth control, contraception pill... CALEB ALEXANDER: No anti-fungal medicine for vaginal yeast infections. IGOR VOLSKY: Ok, stop that. And I have to take it at night and over a six month period I might, during some point in that six months experience a slightly heightened desire to have sex. CALEB ALEXANDER: Right. IGOR VOLSKY: In fact, the few participants who made such a small increase in their sexual activity that we had trouble characterizing it. And many participants experienced adverse effects that the expert panelists feared would only increase in the general population. CALEB ALEXANDER: If you faint while you drive a car, you may kill yourself or someone else. These safety concerns in light of the very modest effectiveness benefit together don’t present a favorable package. IGOR VOLSKY: The FDA previously rejected Flibanserin twice and this third time around, they requested an additional study of how the drug interacts with alcohol. The company enrolled 25 people: 23 men and only 2 women -- and later claimed it didn’t have the ‘foresight’ to enroll more women. CINDY PEARSON: Sprout Pharmaceuticals set off to do the right thing, I believe, but they then went astray. When the FDA said, we’re still not convinced, you still haven’t answered all the questions about safety, then they started advancing pretty significant amounts of money into this marketing campaign IGOR VOLSKY: After a full day of hearings, the panel voted 18-6 to approve the drug, though not without conditions and some serious reservations. PANELIST 1: Women suffering from HSDD deserve better than this. PANELIST 2: I think we all wish it was a drug that was a better one. PANELIST 3: There are serious safety concerns, so my yes is conditional. PANELIST 4: If this were the 7th drug in the class, I think it would be a very different discussion. IGOR VOLSKY: So will this drug really help women? JAMES SIMON: It is not perfect. The drug is not perfect, the FDA is not perfect. We accept certain imperfections to move progress. CINDY PEARSON: If the FDA approves flibanserin, I will be convinced forever that it came about as a result of a brilliant marketing campaign and not the result of good science and I’m afraid women will suffer as a result.

How Viagra Could Help Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

01:07
www.rxwiki.com The little blue pill may have found another use outside the bedroom. A new study from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine found that sildenafil (brand name Viagra) may improve insulin sensitivity and reduce a biomarker that signals an increased risk of heart and kidney disease in prediabetes patients. In prediabetes, blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. "We need additional strategies to help slow the progression from prediabetes to diabetes," said study author Nancy J. Brown, MD, a professor of medicine at Vanderbilt, in a press release. "Weight loss and exercise regimens can be difficult to maintain, and some current medications have been limited by concerns about adverse effects. Sildenafil and related drugs could offer a potential avenue for addressing the rising number of diabetes diagnoses."

TAIWAN: VIAGRA TABLETS FOUND IN CAKE (V)

01:03
Voice and effects VOICED BY: Sophie Sanger Taiwanese police have raided a bakery which produced a so-called 'Viagra cake'. Inside the cake were 11 of Viagra tablets - which are prescribed for male impotency. The bakery in Taipei is charged with selling the tablets without authorisation. 002 Perhaps the ultimate celebration cake. 005 For the past two months, a bakery in Taipei is said to have sold cakes packed with Viagra tablets. 012 If the blue pills are found to be the real thing the baker could face three years in prison and a fine of over 3-thousand dollars. 022 The authorities in Taiwan only gave the go-ahead for the distribution of Viagra in March - and only then by doctor's prescription. 030 But there is a large black market, fed by people desperate for the tablets. Before they were legally available, a single tablet was reported to fetch as much as 65 dollars. 041 The pills are the subject of hot gossip in Taiwan. 045 No surprise then that bakers across the country have tried to cash in... producing cakes in the shape of Viagra pills. For those wanting a gift for a husband, or lover they could make a birthday or anniversary extra special. 058 End script You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/3ca990ccfd2a5374f44d69c5e26ddd9a Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

‘Female viagra’ Flibanserin improves women’s libido and gets FDA approval

Despite being dubbed the female viagra, unlike Viagra, which affects blood flow to the genitals, Flibanserin, works on the brain. According to Sprout Pharmaceuticals, the privately held startup that designed the drug, Flibanserin focuses on the brain's prefrontal cortex and enables sexual desire to manifest by rebalancing neurotransmitters that influence it. Specifically, flibanserin increases dopamine and norepinephrine, responsible for sexual excitement, and decreases serotonin, which is responsible for sexual satiety and inhibition. This is likely achieved by a reduction of glutamate transmission. Women who took the drug in a clinical study have shown an increase of about 1.0 more sexually satisfying events per month, Reuters reported. The pill needs to be taken every day and its most common side effects are dizziness, nausea and sleepiness. Advocates claim that the increase in sexually satisfying events is meaningful, while critics say the benefit is outweighed by the drug’s risks. Flibanserin will be sold under the brand name Addyi. As the drug could potentially cause dangerously low blood pressure and fainting when taken with alcohol it will be sold exclusively through certified health care professionals and pharmacies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. 'Female Viagra' gets FDA approval

02:05
Women who have lost their sex drive will have a little pink pill to help them come October. On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved flibanserin, which will be sold as Addyi, for the treatment of sexual dysfunction in premenopausal women. This is the first FDA approved treatment for sexual desire in men or women. "Today's approval provides women distressed by their low sexual desire with an approved treatment option," Dr. Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research said in a statement announcing the approval. "The FDA strives to protect and advance the health of women, and we are committed to supporting the development of safe and effective treatments for female sexual dysfunction." The approval is not without warnings. In fact, the agency approved the drug with a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy, or REMS, to ensure safety. Of greatest concern, an increased risk of severe low blood pressure, so low it can cause a temporary loss of consciousness. This is more of a concern in patients who drink alcohol while taking the drug. As required by REMS, health care providers who prescribe the medication and pharmacies that dispense it are required to first complete a training program to become certified. They will be required to warn patients of the risks of consuming alcohol while taking Addyi and the importance of not doing so. http://edition.cnn.com/2015/08/18/health/female-viagra-fda-approval/index.html

Scientists vs Feminists - The Fight Over Female Viagra

06:18
Martha Kempner, RH Reality Check, joins Thom Hartmann. Viagra - it's not just for men anymore. Last Tuesday - a company called Sprout Pharmaceuticals asked the Food and Drug admininstration to approve a drug it says will help the almost 40 percent of American women - according to some studies - who suffer from a low sex drive. This is the third time Sprout has put the drug - which is called flibanserin - before the FDA. And just as has been the case the other two times Sprout has asked the FDA to approved its so-called "little pink pill" - a controversy is brewing. Siding with Sprout - many women's groups have called for a quick approval of the drug for sale - suggesting that if this was something that helped men sexually, it would have been on the market years ago.
