Grow Your Food in a Nook and Cranny Garden, part 1

23:36
"Chickens are naturally forest birds." A tour of Gord and Ann Baird's edible landscape starts at the off-grid chicken house and yard, containing fruit trees that provide a protective canopy against flying predators. Roof rainwater becomes drinking water for the chickens, whose “rototilling” has prepared land now being planted in grains — for themselves and people. Don't miss Hannah Hen catching a berry in mid-air! Then visit a Hobbit-ish above-ground root cellar built of cob, where cheeses, vegetables, and beer stay cool and dry. Then on to a shipping container shed whose sunny living roof produces a bounty of winter squashes. The roof's nutrient-rich rainwater is caught in a barrel, then used as compost tea (fertilizer) for other plants. "It's all connected," says Ann. "We're connected to the chickens, and they and we are connected to the land…. The biodiversity here is actually increasing.” Episode 289. [www.eco-sense.ca, ecosenseliving.wordpress.com] Coming in part 2: Nook and cranny gardens that optimize micro-climates, plus a heat-storing cob-sided greenhouse. How to Make a Temperate Forest Garden : Part 1

12:27
From a bare field to a staggeringly productive and beautiful food forest in just a few years, full of benefical insects, amphibians, birds and mammals. This is a story of natural regeneration at its best. Maddy and Tim Harland, founders of Permaculture magazine, share how they created their temperate forest garden over 20 years ago in the South Downs National Park in Hampshire, England. They explain the planning and planting, the experiments to find what plants grow well in their chalky soil and how they created a wildflower meadow to heal the barren soil that had been mined by industrial farming practices. Maddy and Tim grow over 20 varieties of apples, along with pears, medlar, peach under glass and outside, walnut, cobnuts, mulberries, Nepalese and Szechuan peppers, Juneberry, figs, soft fruit including clove currants and Nepalese raspberry, and medicinal and herbal plants. Their aim is to create a feel of subtropical abundance in a cool climate by clever design and the careful selection of trees and plants that will thrive in their alkaline conditions. Their philosophy is that if it thrives on chalk it will probably thrive elsewhere and they are not afraid to trial species and varieties and remove them if they don't succeed. Permaculture Gardening - Preparing the ground for crops

09:47
Life off the Grid. Our dream has always been to retire to a property in the country, completely off the grid, so that we could learn to manage our own existence. Generate the power that we consume. Catch the rainwater that we need. And grow the food that we eat. But when we found this property, we realised; - "Why wait until we retire?; Let's do it Now, while we can still enjoy the adventure!". So in 2013, we moved our small family from an innner city townhouse, to a 1/2 acre property, completely Off The Grid. We had No Idea what we were in for. The first 6 months were the hardest. Power, water and heating issues. In the middle of winter, with a newborn baby. Off-grid Living | Living With The Land | Part 7

07:23
Pat Bowcock explains how she left her 9-5 lifestyle to live in tune with the land, creating her own five acre permaculture smallholding, that is her home, her work and her life. Pat's smallholding, Ourganics Evolving Systems, features a large polytunnel, a flood garden and a forest garden, all of which she harvests and sells to the local community. The local spring is used to water the crops which then joins the River Bride and a small caravan and yurt offer a place to stay, providing extra income. Ourganics Evolving Systems is a real example of how off-grid living is a labour of love where work and play are interchangeable and a job doesn't mean paying rent, but living a richer life. ------ Narrated by international lawyer and author of 'Eradicating Ecocide', Polly Higgins - http://pollyhiggins.com Produced by Permaculture People | http://permaculturepeopleuk.tumblr.com for Permaculture magazine | http://permaculture.co.uk Logo designed by HIP Permaculture | http://hippermaculture.com Camera Mihali Moore | http://mihalimoore.co.uk For more information about Pat and Ourganics please visit: http://www.peasantevolution.co.uk/members_ourganics.html ------ Living with the Land | The Films Living with the Land' is a series of nine short online films free to view and distribute. Transforming Unused Land to Grow Food - Stage 2

Life off the Grid. Our dream has always been to retire to a property in the country, completely off the grid, sothat we could learn to manage our own existence. Episode 46 - Secret Garden of Survival - Rick Austin

47:05
This week on the WeGrowOurs show, Nick and Don have Rick Austin join us. The author of the secret garden of survival and secret greenhouse of survival. ”I used to be a traditional apple farmer. And just like every other traditional apple farmer, I had acres of apple trees planted in rows and rows, with nothing but grass growing in between. And just like every other traditional apple farmer, I spent a fortune on fertilizer and pesticide – every 10 days and also after every rain. Yet I still had wormy, scabby apples, just like every other farmer around me. Little did I know then, that the grass in between the trees sucked up the same nutrients that the apple download trees needed. And little did I know then that the pesticide I was using was actually making my apples a bigger target for the pests I was trying to get rid of. That is because the predator bugs that would have taken care of the pests, were dying from the pesticide faster than the pests! I knew there had to be a better way. download (2)So this is the perfect garden for someone who wants to grow food for their homestead, but doesn’t want the world to be able to see it.” WeGrowOurs gets a sneak peek into what Rick is doing and why. Landscaping the chicken run

The land around the chicken run gets pretty damp and muddy. Rain constanlty erodes the ground. The plan is to plant some grass, along with a few small terraces/steps. Starting from Scratch

28:29
As a retirement gift after hosting five years of the "The Victory Garden" on PBS, our producer gave me the only extant VHS copy of Thalassa Cruso's iconic 60s gardening program, "Making Things Grow," transferred before the original reel-to-reel tapes went into the GBH archives, never, seemingly, to emerge again. Thalassa was my childhood hero -- the horticultural equivalent, and more, of Julia Child -- an indomitable Brit who taught me how to garden. I've treasured this tape ever since I received it, though the sound quality was horrible and the sequences of what turned out to be not one, but three episodes, appeared cut up and out of order. As a labor of love, and after tracking down Thalassa's heirs to obtain permission, AND, after overcoming countless formatting difficulties, I've now managed to digitalize and restore these three programs -- of the original 56 show series -- to accompany my tribute to this great lady in my column at: http://michaelweishan.com/gardenblog/?p=1189 and at http://michaelweishan.com/gardenblog/?p=3265. In this episode, Thalassa discusses how to begin growing plants indoors. For more fun gardening tips, please visit me on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/michael.weishan.and.associates I comment there several times a week on new and interesting plants, techniques, and more.

How to create an Abundance of Earthworms in your Garden

05:46
Earthworms are the workers of the soil and are sometimes called nature’s plow. Their job is very important for the quality of soil and also decomposition. Many of you will think the more earthworms there are the healthier the soil however this isn't always the case. But as organic vegetable gardeners we encourage an abundance of earthworms in our garden to help maintain healthy soil to grow better vegetables in. Design with IBC containers and expanded clay pellets as grow media. Swirl filter has two PVC pipes coming in from the fish tank, a 2' from the bottom and an 1" skimmer from the top. Duck weed pond has a small pump that pumps out to the gold fish tank and returns via gravity by a skimmer elbow. tilapia water is clear of algae because of the bacteria in the water system and grown on the walls and bricks in the system. How to keep the water clear? Swirl filters, duck weed ponds and letting the system just balance out naturally. That takes about 30 days...then it is all good Wiki info about things in this video Aquaponics /ˈækwəˈpɒnɨks/, refers to any system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment. In normal aquaculture, excretions from the animals being raised can accumulate in the water, increasing toxicity. In an aquaponic system, water from an aquaculture system is fed to a hydroponic system where the by-products are broken down by nitrification bacteria into nitrates and nitrites, which are utilized by the plants as nutrients, and the water is then recirculated back to the aquaculture system. As existing hydroponic and aquaculture farming techniques form the basis for all aquaponics systems, the size, complexity, and types of foods grown in an aquaponics system can vary as much as any system found in either distinct farming discipline.[1] Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture and is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only, or in an inert medium, such as perlite or gravel. Tilapia (/tɨˈlɑːpiə/ ti-LAH-pee-ə) is the common name for nearly a hundred species of cichlid fish from the tilapiine cichlid tribe. Tilapia are mainly freshwater fish inhabiting shallow streams, ponds, rivers and lakes and less commonly found living in brackish water. Historically, they have been of major importance in artisan fishing in Africa and the Levant and are of increasing importance in aquaculture and aquaponics. Tilapia can become problematic invasive species in new warm-water habitats such as Australia,[2] whether deliberately or accidentally introduced, but generally not in temperate climates due to their inability to survive in waters cooler than about 21 °C (70 °F). Duckweeds, or water lens, are flowering aquatic plants which float on or just beneath the surface of still or slow-moving bodies of fresh water and wetlands. Also known as "bayroot," they arose from within the arum or aroid family (Araceae),[1] and therefore, often are classified as the subfamily Lemnoideae within the Araceae. Classifications created prior to the end of the 20th century classify them as a separate family, Lemnaceae.

Life off the Grid. Our dream has always been to retire to a property in the country, completely off the grid, sothat we could learn to manage our own existence. Two years certainly has taught us alot about who we are, and out place on this planet; And what it REALLY takes to live without suckling on the Beauracratic and Corporate teats of our civilisation. This Channel is primarily a Journal to document our lives and the changes to our property. And hopefully give us something funny to watch when we're old and grey. This is Our Adventure.
