In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body. In this video I discuss what are vitamins, what do vitamins do, and how many vitamins are there. I also discuss the different types of vitamins, water soluble vitamins and fat soluble vitamins. Transcript Intro Whats up dude, and whats up ladies? Bryan again, and in this video I am going to discuss vitamins. We are going to discuss what they are, how many of them there are, and the 2 different categories of vitamins, so, lets roll. So, what exactly are vitamins? Vitamins are non-caloric micronutrients that are needed in small amounts for normal body functions. The best way to consume vitamins is through a variety of nutrient-dense foods. Supplements can be used to treat certain health concerns but there is insufficient evidence of any nutritional benefit in healthy people. However if supplements are consumed choosing a whole food based vitamin may be a viable option. There are a total of 13 vitamins, which are divided into 2 categories, water- soluble which includes vitamin B’s and C; and fat -soluble vitamins A,D,E and K. Water-soluble vitamins cannot be stored in the body, except for B6 and B12, and are readily excreted if not used. Because water-soluble vitamins are not stored in the body, consistent daily intake is important to avoid deficiencies. Water –soluble vitamins are necessary for enzymes involved in metabolism, without water soluble vitamins the enzymes will not work. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the body for extended periods of time and later excreted. This storage usually occurs in the liver and adipose tissue.. The ability for the healthy body to store fat-soluble vitamins decreases the risk of deficiencies however, over consumption can lead to toxicity, also referred to as hypervitaminosis. When consuming our vitamins through foods, the risk of over consumption is extremely rare. The risk of toxicity usually occurs through high amounts of supplementation. In our vitamin video series, we will be giving each vitamin a rating of 1 to 5. 1 representing little concern and 5 for greatest concern. This is based on if most people are getting enough through their diet. Bottom line: We will discuss the benefits and sources of individual vitamins in future videos. Keep in mind that eating a balanced diet can be difficult. But, try to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables with vibrant colors to consume all of the vital nutrients your body needs. Now we'd like to introduce you to two that you don't normally see but can have a major impact on ED because they directly effect your ability to create nitric oxide. They are vitamins D3 and K2. Before we talk about why you need them let's first address the cause of most ED issues. It's the lack of nitric oxide production. On the screen is a picture of your vascular system as it ages. The first item to note is the drastic reduction in nitric oxide production as you age. By the time you reach the age of 60 your nitric oxide production could have decreased by as much as 85%. This reduction in the production of nitric oxide is due to damage to the interior lining of all of your cardiovascular system. This lining is called the endothelium and it regulates most of your cardiovascular health and blood flow. There are four major factors that damage this tissue leading to plaque formations and calcification. They are: high blood pressure high blood glucose or sugar levels cholesterol particularly LDL or Bad Cholesterol and Smoking Why is this important? Because it's estimated that 65% of all ED issues are caused by atherosclerosis, which is placque formations and arteriosclerosis, which is calcification of the vascular wall. Vitamins D3 and K2 directly address this damage. First, vitamin K2 has been shown to reverse arterial calcification helping to return more of the endothelium back into a healthy, functioning tissue. This results in improve nitric oxide production. Second, the production of nitric oxide by the endothelium is a calcium dependent reaction. The combination of vitamins D3 and K2 help to properly regulate calcium levels in your bloodstream to help optimize this nitric oxide product. Third, as you increase your nitric oxide production to high enough levels over a long enough period of time, this process initiates reparative mechanisms that heal additional damage done to the endothelium. This returns even more surface volume back into play resulting in even higher levels of nitric oxide production. This benefits both improved cardiovascular and sexual health. In this video I'm going to share some of the leading thiamine deficiency symptoms, as well as a few really nifty things this nutrient can do Thiamine also goes by the name of vitamin b1 and played a big role in the discovery of vitamins. After it was discovered that oranges and citrus fruits prevented scurvy with sailors there was this other big disease plaguing people and do you know what that was? It starts with the letter B. It's called beriberi. Just like the role of oranges to scurvy in the late 1900's it was discovered that removing the husks or outer layer of rice caused beriberi. This disease really hurt Japanese and Asian sailors since most of their diet was rice. Then a little later in time this substance received the name vitamin b1 or thiamine. Do you know why this vitamin was called B1? It is because it was the very first B vitamin discovered. You might be wondered what is so bad about beriberi right? Beriberi can either affect the cardiovascular system known as wet beriberi or it can attack the nervous system and that is known as dry beribery. If beribery affects the nervous system all kinds of problems can develop. According to Healthgrades.com There could be problems with walking, coordination, slurred speech, confusion or memory problems. Next a person could feel tingling in the hands or feet, uncontrolled eye movement and possibly vomiting. If beribery is wet it affects the cardiovascular system. Someone may experience fatigue, abnormal heart rhythms, shortness of breath, chest pains, coughing, leg pains and possibly swelling. The great thing is that all these symptoms can be eliminated if someone gets enough of this vitamin. However, if treatment is delayed what do you think is going to happen? Yep all these annoying problems could become permanent. We know that thiamine is vital for life and that is why it's called a vitamin. Apart from preventing beriberi it can reduce the chance of someone getting cataracts. According to Oregon State University a study of nearly 3,000 Australian men and women found that those with the highest level of vitamin B1 were 40% less likely to have cataracts than those with the lowest levels. It also does things like maybe prevent cancer, Alzheimer's, heart failure and it can eliminate free radicals. In conclusion just make sure you get enough of this stuff. You could get it through diet a lone, however I think it makes more sense to take a quality supplement. The reality is that farmers use chemicals to grow their crops bigger and faster, but it depletes the nutritional value of the food that we are consuming. There’s a fair amount of research out there that is compelling and growing, so I took some time to summarize and condense it for your benefit. How does vitamin D regulate testosterone? Primarily this occurs because vitamin D inhibits the process of aromatization in which testosterone is changed into estrogen. It also appears that vitamin D may enhance the sensitivity of cell receptors in the testicular glands that produce testosterone. The best source of vitamin D is natural sunlight. However, that’s not always an option and dietary sources include fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel), fish liver, beef liver, cheese, egg yolks, and fortified foods (namely, milk and breakfast cereals). Many of these studies are looking at individuals who have a deficiency in vitamin D for one reason or another. Like most vitamins, minerals and supplements, there is almost certainly a saturation point at which the benefits subside. Regarding testosterone, it seems relatively clear that men with low vitamin D will have an increase in testosterone when they begin supplementing. That benefit is not as obvious or well studied in men who have normal levels of vitamin D. And on a final note, in the grand scheme of things, vitamin D supplementation has relatively few, if any major side effects when taken at the recommended daily allowance and should be part of a baseline supplement regimen for weight lifters. Hi, I'm Dr. Jared Nielsen. I'd like to talk today about the importance of a vitamin called thiamine or B1. B1 is very, very important for liver function, especially for people who have a history of alcoholism. It's quickly depleted in the system and is essential for that person to be repleted, if you will, their B1 vitamin. There are a lot of people that don't think, "I am really an alcoholic or I don't really have a drinking problem." What's interesting is they'll start to manifest some of the symptomatology of B1 deficiency, peripheral neuropathies, sensitivity or hyper‑sensitivity in the legs and feet. These are very commonly overlapped with diabetics. Diabetics also would get that type of symptomatology as the liver becomes congested or a fatty infiltrated liver. When we look at blood labs, a lot patients will actually say, when we see cholesterol levels going up and triglyceride levels matching or even exceeding that they don't drink alcohol. What we see a lot of times is that they're chronic soda pop abusers. Without naming specifically different brands or types of soda drinks, what we find is people who have a daily soda pop actually will start to also have fatty infiltrated livers and their thiamine levels can start to go down. Equally is important is when we have patients that have eating disorders that begin to experience metallic taste in their mouth is associated with the gall bladder but it also as an indication of thiamine or B1 deficiency... http://thenielsenclinic.com/videos/vitamin-b-or-thiamine
