To the American School System - a poem - time for real K-12 education reform

03:13
To the American School System I see the bright eyes of my children. Eager to learn, trusting. Can I trust my children to your care? You are obsessed with testing! Why do you insist on turning my children's accomplishments into a number? Don't you know the difference between a child and a number? What are you teaching my children? Are they learning about adventure, mystery, beauty? Figures and facts, yes they need these... but opportunities to discover, friendships and time to play as well. Or are you only teaching them "critical thinking"? Who are you to limit my child's choices? A few basic guidelines, yes... long lists of outcomes, no. Is there laughter in your classrooms? Will my child learn self-confidence and optimism? Will they learn about competition and cooperation? I spoke to my child's teacher yesterday. She is harried by stacks of paperwork. When will she have time to encourage my child? I understand the pressure to incorporate technology into the classroom So I ask you to maintain a balance, Do children spend more time searching the internet or learning to communicate well. Education is not about gold stars.. Each idea planted in my child must be carefully selected. I am hoping for a love of nature, to treasure great literature, to struggle with great ideas to be generous, to be grateful In the 60s you removed the Bible from the classroom. Are you surprised by the increase in drug use, teen pregnancies, suicides, violence? Are you training my child to be an American citizen... or to be useful for the corporate world? Will they learn the responsibilities as well as the rights of being an American? Will they learn about the revolutionary ideas that formed America? Will you be honest with my child regarding history? The lessons of history can save us from many unfortunate mistakes. Millions of people have died for ideologies that did not deliver. Think... Hitler, Stalin, Mao The lessons of history will help my child make informed choices. Can I trust my children to your care? Oh you planners and policy makers. Beware. Take heed what you do. You are accountable. It's high time to get this right ENOUGH OF STANDARDS & ASSESSMENTS time for real reform ***** The way forward.. Acknowledge problems Get out of CCSS and PARCC Revise objectives to include citizenship Simplify Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) Stop High Stakes Testing Involve parents and community Protect student records Support teachers LibertyWatch.info, select K-12 Page

15:53
In this TEDx Talk Dr. Caryn Aviv talks about the reasons why it's ok, and in fact better for us, to be able to say NO and how saying no can be saying Yes to what you need and want. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Caryn Aviv has worked as a professor of Jewish Studies and sociology, and as a Jewish non-profit entrepreneur. She currently teaches at University of Colorado at Boulder and works as Associate Director of Judaism Your Way. Caryn co-founded and was director of research with Jewish Mosaic from 2003-2008, and she co-founded and directed Storahtelling Colorado from 2008-2011. She earned a PhD in sociology from Loyola University Chicago, and has published widely for academic and popular audiences. What nourishes her most is learning, teaching, and sharing her love of a multi-vocal, resilient, and vibrant Judaism. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Creative People: Insecurity and Androgyny

04:49
From my webinar: Creative People: Personality and Mental Health. http://talentdevelop.com/creative-people-personality-and-mental-health-webinar/ This is part of my hour long presentation on a variety of topics that relate to many creative people - topics such as High Sensitivity, Self Concept & Self Esteem, Anxiety, Depression, Trauma and other traits and experiences that impact how we develop creativity. Over the years of reading biographies and interviews with many highly talented and creative people, it has often struck me how many of them talk about being self-critical and having poor self-esteem, along with high confidence at times. John Lennon once said, “Part of me suspects that I’m a loser, and the other part of me thinks I’m God Almighty.” Writer Larry Kane commented about his bio Lennon Revealed: “People would be surprised at how insecure John Lennon was, and his lack of self esteem. Throughout his life, even during the height of Beatle mania, he had poor self esteem, even though he exuded confidence.” Another example: Nobel Prize laureate poet and writer Czeslaw Milosz confessed: “From early on writing for me has been a way to overcome my real or imagined worthlessness.” Tilda SwintonOne of my favorite actors, Tilda Swinton, won an Oscar for her role in “Michael Clayton. She once commented she is “very often referred to as ‘Sir’ in elevators and such…I think people just can’t imagine I’d be a woman if I look like this.” Part of her power as an actor and many of her characters is in their androgynous looks and energies. Swinton has said she is fascinated by the question, “How do we identify ourselves, and how do we settle into other people’s expectations for our identity? But androgyny is more than appearance. Kathleen Noble, PhD, a professor and psychotherapist who works with many gifted clients, said in our interview, “Gifted women tend to be highly androgynous… they tend to combine qualities that we ascribe to both genders."

Higher Level Learners - Jeanne McCarten and Helen Sandiford

01:02:54
What challenges do you face when teaching students at higher levels (CEFR B2 & C1)? This is a question we asked teachers on Twitter and Facebook. Their responses show a surprising number of common issues that teachers experience. This webinar recording addresses these issues and was led by two of Cambridge University Press's leading authors, Jeanne McCarten and Helen Sandiford (Touchstone and Viewpoint).

Dale Pendell - Plant Teachers and the Path of Eve

37:05
The Mythopoetic Roots of Psychedelic Practice in the Western Tradition We will look for the mythopoetic roots of psychedelic praxis in the Western Tradition. Faust, the great necromancer, is of course the shaman, but in Eve we find our first curandera. Blake called Milton "a true Poet, and of the Devil's party without knowing it." Norman O. Brown pointed out the links between Eve and Pandora, the "all-gifted," and that her true gift was the pharmakon. We will look at Eve as the one who dared -- and the one who shared: the patron goddess of the "poison path." World Psychedelic Forum in Basel, 22. The victory of the positive: Konstantinos Tzoumas at TEDxThessaloniki

21:18
With his compelling/ undeniable wit and sarcastic humour, Konstantinos Tzoumas spells out a narrative of everyday poetry in a fascinating performance in which story-telling meets Beckett to showcase the beauty of living in a flawed world and the revenge of the good in rough times. A gifted and multi-talented personality, Tzoumas was born in Piraeus and spent his life in Pasalimani and Athens. As a youngster he was a bohemian and a traveler, choosing real life lessons to those taught within university auditoriums. Konstantinos became an actor as a reaction against the stereotypical notion that acting equals to immorality. He studied theatre at the Athens Drama School and attended dance seminars delivered by Zouzou Nikoloudi, Alwin Nikolais, Merce Cunningham and Alvin Ailey. In New York he learned the tricks of survival. Constantinos quit dancing and worked in theatre, cinema and television. He characterises himself as a "book-eater". In 2008 he published "Os ek Thavmatos", as the first part of his autobiographical trilogy. The second and third parts of the trilogy were entitled "Complete Unknown" and "Panolethriamvos". Nowadays, he runs a popular daily radio show broadcasted by EnLefko radio station. He loves classic sports, ping-pong, billiard, classical novelists and, last but not least, Rock'n'roll. What Is Leadership To Me(Poem)

02:20
A poem about Leadership that i made/flimed over the weekend for LIB, to highlight what i think leadership is all about and why it is so important. Commitment and Responsible, confidence and honesty. A step forward even if only little, to bloom a flower with potential. The light in the dark, the answer to the question. To know show and lead the way. To take you not where you want to be but where you need to be. To guide the lost, and make the impossible into reality. To transform you to be the best that you can be. To create leaders out of leaders. To make the great even greater. Let the journey begin.

Please consider checking out my blog: http://lofalexandria.com/ or following me on twitter: https://twitter.com/lofalexandria I tried to find this amazing video breaking down Eminem's rhymes for a discussion on reddit about Eminem and it had been removed from youtube after the creator's youtube channel was closed down. Thought I would re-upload for everyone to enjoy. The channel this video was originally from was closed due to some legal trouble for the creator: http://www.dailydot.com/news/youtube-mike-lombardo-arrested-fbi-child-porn/ I figured there is no harm in uploading it again since it is not likely he is going to be back on the web any time soon to reupload himself.

Making a Bow Hold - Suzuki Violin Lessons for Parents

05:42
www.suzukiviolinlessons.com.au Enable Annotations for lots more useful tips as you watch! This is from a class for new parents who are preparing to start Suzuki violin lessons with their children next term. They are learning to make bow holds, place violins on shoulders, shape violin hands, play "busy busy stop stop" etc, as well as studying the philosophy of what creates successful violinists. In this class we are learning to make bow holds. 00:00:00 Drawing on the hand 00:00:48 Relaxing the arm 00:01:06 Placing the bow stick on the fingers 00:01:52 Putting the thumb and pinky on their tips 00:02:41 Flipping the bow onto the shoulder 00:02:52 Checking the thumb and pinky 00:03:13 Twirling and balancing the index finger 00:04:08 Flopping and curving the middle two fingers 00:04:42 Pointing the bow up towards the ceiling, and feeling how loosely we can hold it. 00:05:16 The violin holds up the bow. 00:05:35 so really we just want a gentle hold, as long as it doesn't move. Learning to Make a Bowhold - Suzuki Violin Lessons for Parents, Fri 24 May, 2013. http://suzukiviolinlessons.com.au/ Practice these skills first on other adults until your teacher says you're an expert and ready to be unleashed on your child! We use practice violins and practice bows so we're free to make mistakes and learn quickly. For practice arms, shoulders and hands to learn on, use your partner, other parents and any available non-violinists you can find to practise on so your first hands-on shaping of your budding violinist will be accurate, smooth and confident. Little kids don't have the patience for you to make your mistakes on them, and besides, they are likely to engrave your first attempt on their brain. So practice first and make it a masterful one! The most important time to practice this is immediately after the lesson while it's still very fresh. If you do it the same day, it will feel very easy and all the details you learned will come back and become strengthened in your memory. It will seem so easy that you might wonder what all the fuss was about. But if you leave it till the next day you'll discover (although often not until the next lesson with your teacher) that you've forgotten many of the finer details. To test the importance of this, simply try it both ways and experience the difference. (On second thought, don't! Just take my word for it!) Once you've established that you can do it outside of the lesson environment, and with someone who has no idea what they're doing or whether you're doing it well or not, repeat at least one good bow hold every day. Do this and it will stay easy and natural. The more you do it, the easier it will get. And before you make your first one with your child, you want it to be very very easy. You want to be able to be confident and relaxed as you do it, as if making bow holds are as natural for you as breathing. You want to be able to "whisper with your hands," and create success for your children. The secret to having it be this easy is not how many times you do it, but how many consecutive days you can do it on. Mark the days you do it on your calendar next to your listening stickers with a distinctive sticker, picture or symbol. Remember, this is for YOU at this stage, not your child. Let your child(ren) watch if they want. If they ask, explain in simple terms what you're doing and why. But also explain that its not yet their turn. No harm will come to them from letting desire and anticipation build. But plenty of harm can be done rushing in before you're ready. Let them wait. **** Much of the inspiration for this is from my latest favorite book, Edmund Sprunger's excellent "Building Violin Skills, a set of plans designed to help parents and children construct positive practices" c.2012 - Parent Phase iii (preparing for the first lesson with your child) NB. the execution of this is all my own and any mistakes or questionable decisions are all on me! "Before you attempt to make bow hands with a child, I can't recommend strongly enough that you do at least 100 with another adult first." - Edmund Sprunger p.160 Help me translate this video! http://amara.org/v/C0yh/

Our Present Practice- Part 1

10:28
Hello! My name is Tiana Zoumer, for 4-years hooping has been my present practice. Hooping is a dance form evolving from many inspirations. As a form of ecstatic dance, there is a communal experience of spirit rising and body enlivening that divines varied expressions. We use these expressions as a language to communicate, each contributing dialect and, by practice, design. These are the movements that make poetry in motion, and speak unknowable truths. This is the way we connect as energy dancing. This is my inspiration to live and love life. I believe our understanding is nurtured through practice. When we value the experience of listening as dance, such as feeling a hoop slide around your waist, we surrender our senses to the honesty of their existence, gently bending with the weight of their knowing until we are bonded in understanding. Dually, discovering the Intention with which we lead our dance, we play whip and witness to the momentum that propels us and rise to the responsibility of dancing freely, together, infinitely. All I offer, my resonant he(art). Embodying my truth. Breathing into the moment, listening to senses as they are touched and triggered, and moving by the grace of the energy that pervades me. I am inspired by dancing with this circle, driven to discover and at once forget myself. Pushing past the limits of what I know and honoring the spirit of understanding. In these moments I am free from judgement, limitation, separation and the fears of my mortality. I flow because I am grateful I am alive enough to feel. I call this sensitivity a gift. And as I am awake enough to witness, I call this vision to be truthful in its perception, and live as lights reflection. I take my lessons as they are available to me now. One breath at a time. One practice for each moment. All love. Our Present Practice is a new series that I base on the inspiration I find when flowing to my favorite musical artists live. In this episode I share practice space with Matt Spencer or "Octopod". He's been the musical inspiration of my hoop lifetime. He's been in a partnership with my sister for 11 years and in that time I've seen his appreciation of every musical style develop and deepen. His sets were my main inspirations in my early hoop practice sessions and nurtured many ecstatic moments of flow. He's my brother (in spirit) and he inspires me. The photographer in the session, Julie Hanna, both Matt and I went to high school with and have been gifted to see her work and life shine. She was our third practitioner to offer her flow to the space. We've been combining our arts for some time now as well. Julie and I have a running Hoop/Photography project going titled, "Illuminated Movement". Through this practice I have been able to see every small moment in my dance, through her lens. She is my sister (in spirit) and she inspires me. For this episode, I asked Matt to play a 30 min. set which turned into 43 minutes of sweaty sweaty flow, flailing and occasional failure. The full video was too long for Youtube standards so I will be releasing it in parts. This is part 1 of 3! It gets much much sweatier...and flail-ier. Yup. Flailier. It's a word now, I just decided. Feels good to say right? FlailierFlalierFlalier! (If you actually could read that, congrats! You're a tongue ninja) The lesson of this moment in practice (Note: there will be a different one for each part): We all find our ways to bring ourselves into the space, and in our truest form, through the art that opens us to experience and flow. When we use this willingness to share our practice collaboratively we nurture something diversely inspired. I will go places I never thought I would simply by being moved by what someone else's expression can do. INFO FOR MUSIC AND PHOTOGRAPHY: Matt Spencer, aka Octopod, is a seasoned selector and budding producer. He is well known in the Bay for his hypnotic grooves and dynamic live sessions. "Cute Is a Four-Letter Word": Sarah Curtis at TEDxSLC

17:02
Sarah currently teaches at St. Ann's School in Brooklyn, NY. Years ago she attended the Sarah Lawrence Early Childhood Center. The experience of growing up lies at the heart of her interests and endeavors, which include poetry, performing arts, and anything that informs her development as a teacher. Startling though it may be, Virginia Woolf has a lot to say about preschool. An argument for quality preschool is an argument for the profound value of great literature. It allows children to discover language and literature through play. Research insists that providing quality preschool is the key to pulling this country out of its educational tailspin, which has this year been affirmed as a policy priority by President Obama. Quality preschool isn't achievement based; it's play-based. My own early experience as a pre-school student at the Sarah Lawrence Early Childhood Center created within me a room of my own from which I have connected with the world. A truly wonderful education teaches lessons through experience. Such lessons are exceptionally difficult to quantify. Still, they take up permanent residence in human hearts and mind. As a teacher and privileged person, I believe we must continue and complicate the conversation about the power of a wonderful education. The crisis facing the United States education system is so deep we must work hard to find creative answers. Woolf points to a world of possibility. While they are only beginning to develop as people, children in poverty experience injustice, violence, and a world of adult anxiety. What could be more important than to offer at-risk children a developmentally appropriate preschool experience that values imaginative play as an essential means of intellectual development? There is much more to being a preschool teacher than being nice and liking children. The project of learning can and should be profound, transformative and deeply felt. Play-based preschool locates hope in a genuine relationship between an adult and child—and amongst children themselves. Virginia Woolf and other great authors and artists can help adults create rooms where children may play in order to compose the story of their lives. "WANTED! A Harp Like the Angels Play"

02:05
"WANTED! A Harp Like the Angels Play" for my dear friend Alex, who gifted me this piano that belonged to her father. From the bottom of my heart, Alex, thank you!!! Words by E.B.E. Bessey. Music by J. Fred Hele. Published in 1911. Original price was .25 cents. I purchased the music off E-bay for .99 cents. The wonderful lyrics follow...... A little winsome blue eyed maid unto the clerk said, half afraid While tears of sorrow filled her eyes "Please sir, I want to advertise. Just say I want a harp of gold, My mama's ill and I am told She'll need one when she goes away, so won't you advertise and say: (refrain) "Wanted a harp like the angels play, A harp that is made of gold. I've tried but can't find one anywhere, I don't know where they are sold. Please have it printed tomorrow, sir, She'll need one soon, they say. Wanted a harp like the angels play For mama, when she goes away." Verse 2 A doctor there heard what was said And bending, stroked her curly head "Just smile" he said "dry every tear, And take me home to mama dear." That night the tears of glad surprise, Filled both her true, blue little eyes, The doctor, leaving her had told She wouldn't need the harp of gold. (refrain).

The Student Voice Forum Experience

03:51
I am often asked what the student voice forums look like, sound like, and feel like. It is a dynamic experience that emulates an instrumented blended learning environment en masse. What this model illustrates is that learning can be differentiated for students with a variety of mediums and tools in both small classroom sized environments (30-ish students) and large conference sized environments (200-ish students). It has been a highly successful proof of concept. Here you will see students expressing themselves through inquiry by having face-to-face conversations, private reflections via podcasting, private and group blogging (via text, audio, and video), online collaborations with students both physically present and from elsewhere, and by writing their ideas down on graffiti walls and tables. The options are endless and the design is completely student centered. It's THEIR voice, THEIR way!
