Making the Most of Teacher Evaluation by Charlotte Danielson, Karyn Wright - kdsi.org

03:18
Schools and districts across the country have found in Charlotte Danielson's A Framework for Teaching a tool to promote and assure quality in teaching and continual professional learning for educators. Danielson offers an evaluation system that compels its users to address the fundamental questions of how good is good enough in teaching? Good enough at what exactly? How do we know, and who should decide? Educators will learn a range of functions for the Framework, from supporting self-assessment and reflection, to providing formative assessment of teachers' practice, to providing support for improving their practice. A panel of administrators with experience implementing the Framework in their schools and districts detail necessary steps to implementation and guidelines to facilitate the process. Educators will come away prepared to instigate and utilize this evaluation system that has been adopted and touted by so many—teachers and administrators alike. Take this course today at www.kdsi.org

Primary Science - Classroom Organisation

19:47
This video considers different organisational strategies for teaching science in the primary classroom. These include managing whole class introductions and practical investigations as well as different types of group work. Advantages and disadvantages of each organisation are presented. Viewers are encouraged to think about how to choose the most appropriate strategy. The video particularly focuses on the need for organisation before a lesson and how the teacher might optimise the learning and assessment of the children during the activities. The video is illustrated with a variety of classroom examples. Types of Organisation 1: Whole Class - Introduction, practical activity, sharing science books, demonstration, drawing the lesson together 2: Group Work - Groups doing different practical activities, circus of different activities, one group only doing science Think about - Making the lesson relevant and stimulating. What needs to be done before the lesson. What equipment is available. How can it be organised. The childrens experience of group work. Time available. What will you do in the lesson The organisation you will choose will depend on - What you want the children to learn. What experience the class already have of group work. The time, equipment and materials available Your planning should include - What you need to collect and set out. Introducing the work. What the children will do. Monitoring and assessing their learning. Helping children of different abilities. Concluding the lesson The video was written and produced by Tina Jarvis, Frankie McKeon and Jon Shears from SCIcentre and University of Leicester ITS Multimedia Services. It was made with the kind cooperation of St Marys CE Primary School, Bitteswell, Leicester. Special thanks go to Linda Cork and Penny Vernon.

01:36
Watch more Business Skills videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/383493-How-to-Take-Minutes-at-a-Business-Meeting If you work in a business environment, the time is going to come when you will be asked to take minutes at a meeting. Impress your colleagues by already knowing how by following these steps. Step 1: Bring a notebook Bring a notebook to the meeting with you. If you will be writing minutes often, you may want to buy a good notebook to keep your minutes in rather than a cheap one. Tip If you have a laptop, you should use it to save time later. Step 2: Send around a sign in sheet Create a simple sign-in sheet that has columns for name and contact information and pass it around. You will be able to refer to this record in order to document attendance. Tip Find out who was supposed to be there and make sure you include the people who did not attend in the minutes under regrets. Step 3: Begin note-taking Begin note-taking by noting the date of the meeting and the time the meeting was called to order. Step 4: Record old business Record old business, which is anything that needed a follow up from the last meeting. Note anything that was done or not done and by whom. Step 5: Record new business Record new business. For example, when someone has an issue to address they will make a motion. Note exactly what they said along with who seconded the motion and whether or not the motion passed. Step 6: Finish notes Write down any action items or things specific participants agreed to do, but don't transcribe word for word debates or discussions. End the notes with the time the meeting adjourned and the date of the next meeting. Step 7: Type and distribute Type up the minutes as soon as possible after the meeting so it's fresh in your mind. Once you have typed them, distribute them to members for review and approval at the next meeting. Did You Know? During one day, there is an average of 17 million meetings in America.

Nerdy Sara - ADPIE

06:21
LYRICS (spoken: Activate nursing process, Acronym... ADPIE!) Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implement, Evaluation, And it goes round and round and round and round and Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Yo, assessment means, "What's the situation?" Collect, organize, validate, and document the patient's Data, either subjective or objective, The patient LOOK objective but the patient SAYS subjective, The first thing you ask is, "Are you in pain?" Then you go into the PQRST, Provoking factor (what caused it?), Quality (how does it feel?), Radiation (where is it?), severity (1-10?), timing (For how long?) Also have to ask all the other questions, Allergies? Patient's ability? Medical, family, drug, reproductive, social, health-risk history, And once you analyze, now you can diagnose. Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implement, Evaluation, And it goes round and round and round and round and Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Hey, diagnosis, is a judgment of the RN, And I'm telling you, it's all memorization, Assessment is thinking, diagnosis is decision Of a patient's physiological condition, To diagnose pain, there's 2 statements, 2-part, 3-part, both have NANDA, etiology, The 3-part statement has the signs and the symptoms, Actual and potential diagnosis are your options, Actual can have 2 or 3 parts, Potential can only have 3 parts and you're AT RISK, Once you decide what's wrong, it's time to plan, This is the hardest part so if you mess up, TSK TSK. Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implement, Evaluation, And it goes round and round and round and round and Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Mmmm, planning, based on the diagnosis, If the patient's pain is like 9 over 10, Then you make a goal such as: "In 4 hours, Pain will go from 9 over 10 to 2 to 0 over 10." One, you assess the pain tolerance and control, Two, prepare the pain meds as ordered by the MD man, You set priorities, determine client goals, Make expected outcomes, and make a nursing care plan, Remember, it's all about the patient, Before you give it, make a clear, realistic goal, So the process goes as planned, Patient-teach the stuff and, Write the plan, then implement it, cause it's part of the ad-ad-ad-ad- Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implement, Evaluation, And it goes round and round and round and round and Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Implementation, is the star of the show, Use your knowledge, skills, principles, try to reach the goal, Plan is in action, give the medication, Think about it, before the intervention, This will make it or break it so go review everything, Just cause it's a short process don't mean it takes nothing, It takes the skill and brains and all your resources, And of course, when you do it, it takes common sense. Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implement, Evaluation, And it goes round and round and round and round and Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Evaluation, is it done? Is it done? Compare the patient's status with the desired outcome, There are 3 types of current outcome possibilities, Goal was either met, partly met, or it wasn't met, If it was met, then the plan was appropriate, Partially met, gotta keep on doing interventions, Not met at all, means you gotta change the plan, Either way you go, remember, you're not done, This nursing process is an ongoing circle, Keep checking the patient to see if they're better, ADPIE lives on forever, Key to treating patients is in these 5 letters, Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implement, Evaluation, And it goes round and round and round and round and Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie Adpie, adpie, ad-ad-adpie

John Dewey's Theories on Education and Learning: An Introduction to His Life and Work

03:57
John Dewey wrote extensively about philosophy, psychology, education, political science, and the arts. In his very full 92 years of life (1859-1952), he not only wrote about the breadth of life, he participated in it as a teacher, social critic, political activist and involved family man. This fully produced video introduces students to his philosophy and his critical studies of education, the arts and the implications of democracy for the lives of individuals and their communities. Dewey lived in a different era of history than we do, but many of his concerns are very relevant to life today. Maintaining a democracy in the face of diverse ethnic values, educating the young to participate fully in the life of their community, and expanding individual perceptions through participation in the arts were among the issues he examined. Contemporary examples of the influence of his work include film sequences of noted educator Deborah Meier's Mission Hill School in Roxbury, Massachusetts; commentary by literature authority Louise Rosenblatt on Dewey's theories of democratic behavior and philosopher Larry Hickman's comments on the ways technology changes our experiencing of the world. (Dr. Hickman is also the director of the Center for Dewey Studies in Illinois.) Terminology and the historical context necessary for understanding Dewey's work are provided by historical materials, newly shot visuals and clever graphics. This is a quick video detailing a Sport Education unit I taught two years ago. If you are unfamiliar with the Sport Education model, you can refer to this article: http://www.sirc.ca/newsletters/january08/documents/S-939247.pdf or check out "The Complete Guide to Sport Education" (Siedentop, Hastie, & Van der Mars, 2004). Since I tried to keep this video short, I had to leave out some information on the unit (assessment, extra roles, etc.) If you would like to learn more about this unit, or would like to leave some feedback or thoughts on Sport Education, please do so in the comments below. Here are some of the documents I created for this unit (since I taught in a French High School, some of these documents will be in French. Database Optimization Webinar With Forrester Research

03:35
http://bit.ly/forrester-embt, Database performance issues are on the rise and impacting operations. Today, over 60% of enterprises manage more than 1 TB of data. And with the rush to cut costs through datacenter consolidation and virtualization, complex performance issues are emerging that are increasingly difficult to identify and fix. With stringent SLAs to be met, limited resources, and with the on-going proliferation of applications and heterogeneous database environments, taming the performance beast requires intelligent database performance strategies, techniques, and tools.

Understanding Car Crashes: It's Basic Physics

22:15
What happens to vehicles and their occupants in crashes is determined by science. "You can't argue with the laws of physics," says Griff Jones, award-winning high school physics teacher who goes behind the scenes at the Institute's Vehicle Research Center to explore the basic science behind car crashes. Using a series of vehicle maneuvers on a test track plus filmed results of vehicle crash tests, Jones explains in anything but lecture style the concept of inertia, the relationship between crash forces and inertia, momentum and impulse, and a lot more. Quote from Paul G. Hewitt, the developer of the "Conceptual Physics" curriculum and author of the best selling text book by the same name: "The video "Understanding Car Crashes: It's Basic Physics" and accompanying teacher's guide are wonderful. The pacing is excellent, the coverage fascinating, and most importantly, the physics is correct. It's a first rate teaching package. I give it five stars!" Emphasizing high-quality instructional videos, Howcast brings you experts who provide accurate information in easy-to-follow tutorials on everything from makeup, hairstyling, nail art design, and soccer to parkour, skateboarding, dancing, kissing, and much, much more. Step 1: Understand social media tools Before you start using social-media tools, learn how they work and what they offer, particularly for government agencies. They can enable internal collaboration, allow information-sharing with external partners, exchange information with the public, keep pace with fast-moving events in real time, and harness the collective ingenuity of the public to support your mission. Tip Social networking isn't just for young people. The fastest-growing segment of Facebook users in the last half of 2008 was between the ages of 35 and 54. Step 2: Focus on your mission Focus on your agency's goals. Each social media tool should serve a well-defined, mission-oriented purpose, and have the potential to improve your communications efforts. Step 3: Choose the right tools Choose the right mix of tools for the job, keeping both social media and other channels, like email, in mind. To solicit the public's thoughts on an issue, you could send out an email, post a notice on your home page, record a podcast, and write a blog post inviting customers to share their ideas as comments. Tip Make sure you can support multiple communications tools. Social-media sites that sit untended can lose their value Step 4: Allocate resources Allocate or realign resources to implement the tools you've chosen. Like any business tool, social media requires an investment in resources to make it work. After an initial investment, you may find that these new tools allow you to work more efficiently and improve performance. Step 5: Identify metrics Before implementing your social media plan, define what success looks like and how you're going to measure it. Often social media can save money, but its strength really lies in increasing audience engagement -- which helps you accomplish your mission. Examples of measurements include subscriptions, page and blog views, and click-throughs. Tip Special Terms of Service agreements have already been negotiated with vendors like YouTube, Facebook, and Flickr, to make it easier for agencies to use these tools. Step 6: Implement your plan Implement your plan. Like any project, using social media requires strategic thinking. Start small and see which initiatives work and which don't -- it's OK to fail as you try new things. Investing in social media has the potential for delivering great rewards. Did You Know? NOAA boosted their "Ocean Explorer" video views from less than 10,000 to over 80,000 by posting clips on YouTube as well as on their own site.

The San Diego Met: the Future of Education

02:05
The San Diego Met, a California State Distinguished School founded on the Big Picture Learning model, is one of 40 public high schools in the San Diego Unified School District. We are an alternative middle college high school located on the campus of San Diego Mesa College. Our population is ethnically diverse. Students come to the Met from San Diego County area public, private and charter schools. Currently, the population is 47% male and 53% female and approximately half of students qualify for the Free and Reduced Priced Meals program. Most of the students will be part of the first generation in their family to attend college. The mission of The San Diego Met is to prepare students for college and the workforce through active learning, academic rigor, and community involvement. Because personalization is a key component of our school culture, advisories of 20 to 25 students work with the same teachers (called advisors) for all four years. Following The Big Picture School model, advisors, parents and students design a customized academic learning plan focused on California State Content Standards and students career interests and passions. We believe that a childs interest and passions are the key to his or her high school education and life-long learning, and that learning best takes place when each student is an active participant in his or her education. The Mets focus is not only on knowledge acquisition but is also on knowledge utilization. We believe that school-based learning is most effective when blended with outside experiences that broaden and deepen student understanding. Therefore, we strive to develop life-long learners with the ability to apply academics in practical and creative ways to real life experiences and challenges. Big Picture schools create a structure, instructional methods, and a learning environment that supports students to become self-motivated, competent, life-long learners. Students at the San Diego Met earn attendance credit through independent study contracts. Three days per week students are engaged in academic study on campus; the other two days each week are spent on Learning-Through-Internships (LTI). Students complete academic projects under the guidance of a mentor. The San Diego Met partners with more than 400 businesses in the San Diego area. Additionally, students present four exhibitions a year in which they demonstrate how they have mastered the content standards and integrated the five learning goals through their academic work and internships. Parent engagement is required at the exhibitions and in the development of the customized learning plan. Because we are a middle college high school, students begin to take college classes in their sophomore year and have the opportunity to earn 32.5 college credits prior to graduation. A college-going culture is established in the ninth grade, and students are required to research at least a dozen colleges every year. Students work closely with the San Diego Met College Transition Coordinator as well as a Mesa College counselor. Students participate in college campus visits, take the PSAT, SAT and ACT, attend FAFSA and scholarship workshops, and are guided through all aspects of the college application process.
