This means that they lessen gas in the intestines and water in the body. Fennel seeds also help lessen bloating by relaxing muscle tightening in the digestive tract. Peppermint Peppermint has menthol oil, which helps stop the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract, bile duct, and gallbladder from tightening. It also calms gas build up and helps food pass through the stomach quickly. Ginger Ginger is an herb that eases gas and bloating. It has sharp ingredients like gingerols and shogaols that help to cut swelling in the intestines and loosen the intestinal muscles. Chamomile Tea Another way to lessen bloating is with chamomile tea. This is because tea stops swelling and tightening of the muscles. It can also help with heartburn. Caraway Seeds Caraway can help stop the muscles from tightening, kill bacteria, and cut gas buildup in the intestines. Carvol and carvene, two chemicals found in caraway seeds, help soothe the muscles and force gas out, to help stomach bloating right away. Pumpkin If you’re looking for a great way to stop gas buildup and bloating, try eating pumpkin. Pumpkin has a lot of vitamin A, potassium, and fiber that help in digestion. One cup of pumpkin at a meal will help digestion a lot. You can steam it, bake it, broil it, or just use it as an ingredient in any of your food. Activated Charcoal Activated charcoal has holes that let water or air pass through. These holes can trap the extra gas in your body which is caused by stomach bacteria. You can find activated charcoal as a tablet, capsule, or powder. Ask a doctor to find out the amount you should be taking. Warm Lemon Water Warm water is good for you because it keeps you hydrated and washes bacteria out of your body. Lemons are full of vitamins and minerals that are helpful to your body’s digestion. Some of these are vitamins B and C, riboflavin, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, proteins, and carbohydrates. Lemons also have an acid which helps break down food. For these reasons, drinking warm water and lemon together is great for your digestion. It can stop bloating, gas, and constipation. Hopefully some of these ideas will help keep your stomach happy. Most women start pelvic floor exercises around 4-6 weeks after hysterectomy but only with their surgeon's approval as this can vary from one woman to the next. Seek your surgeon's approval before recommencing your pelvic floor strengthening exercises after hysterectomy surgery. Pelvic floor exercises after hysterectomy or any pelvic surgery should be pain free during and after exercising. This video demonstrates 2 positions for returning to pelvic floor exercises after hysterectomy surgery; lying down and sitting upright. Ideally commence your exercises lying down. Pelvic Floor Exercise 1: Lying Down Position Position your body so that you are either lying down on your back with a pillow under your knees, or on your side with a pillow between your legs for comfort. Lying down eliminates the downward force of gravity making this a useful position for pelvic floor exercises after hysterectomy. Lying Down Pelvic Floor Exercise Technique Before starting out make sure you understand how to find and feel your pelvic floor muscles see https://www.pelvicexercises.com.au/where-are-pelvic-floor-muscles/ * Try to picture your pelvic floor muscles wrapping in and around your 3 pelvic openings. * Very gently squeeze and lift inside around your 3 pelvic openings. * Keep squeezing and lifting for a few seconds. * Gently relax and lower your pelvic floor muscles back to resting position. * Breathe deeply to relax your pelvic floor muscles and rest. * Repeat this exercise again for a total of 1-3 repetitions. Pelvic Floor Exercise Mistakes to Avoid After Hysterectomy Some of the common mistakes made doing pelvic floor exercises include: * Drawing in or pulling in the abdominal muscles strongly * Squeezing the buttocks or thighs * Holding the breath rather than breathing normally. Pelvic floor exercises can be performed daily and kept within the range of personal comfort - avoid overdoing your exercises especially when starting out. If you experience any discomfort during or after your pelvic floor exercises after hysterectomy stop and let your body heal before recommencing. If any pelvic floor discomfort persists have this assessed by your doctor. Sitting Upright Pelvic Floor Exercises Doing upright seated pelvic floor exercises after hysterectomy helps to encourage the pelvic floor muscles to lift upwards against the downward force of gravity. Upright exercises can be used as a progression position from lying down pelvic floor exercises. * Sit upright on a comfortable chair ideally a dining chair rather than a soft lounge chair. * Check you have the correct posture for pelvic floor exercises: your spine should be lengthened and you should have the inward curve in your lower back. * Feel your pelvic floor openings against the surface of the chair. * Squeeze and lifting in and around your 3 pelvic openings for a few seconds. * Relax your pelvic floor back to resting position and breathe into your belly. * Repeat 1-3 exercises in a row within your range of comfort. * Try to avoid the mistakes listed above when doing seated pelvic floor exercises. Progressing Your Pelvic Floor Exercises After Hysterectomy Pelvic floor muscles become stronger when challenged to work harder. This challenge needs to be applied gradually over time as your body heals after surgery. Techniques to progress pelvic floor strengthening: * Doing more exercises up to 8-12 consecutive exercises (up to 3 times daily) * Holding for longer during each exercise up to 10 seconds at a time * Contracting your pelvic floor muscles strongly * Doing your exercises standing upright * Decreasing the rest between exercises * Contracting your pelvic floor to hold up against the downward force of a cough or sneeze. Yup I'm a HysterSister now! Yes, I'm baaaaaack...after a long break. If you've been wondering where I've been, I've actually been recuperating from surgery. A pretty major one actually. And as I write this, today (April 4th) marks 4 weeks post op for me. I've decided to sit down and let you know what's been going on and share a wesbsite (of course!) that I found is helping me get through it. If you haven't figured it out yet, a Hyster Sister is part of a big club of women who's had a hysterectomy. (ok guys, here's where you can check out if you're not interested in hearing about female reproductive organs getting removed!) lol, but actually on a serious note, you might want to read on because chances are you'll have a wife, girlfriend or even a daughter that might be going through it soon enough. Like many things in life, we don't discuss "everything" with each other and I suppose we shouldn't have to if we don't feel comfortable doing it. I certainly didn't...at least initially anyway. That's why I'm thankful for the internet because there's so many resources and websites available that can make you feel like you're not alone. Thank goodness for Hystersisters.com. I had sooooo many questions and concerns before my surgery and there were a couple of friends at work that shared their own stories of having a hysterectomy but they didn't really go into great detail. And after I came home from the hospital, I had even more questions, so thank goodness for Hystersisters.com. Now, I'm not saying this website should take the place of your doctor, because your doctor should always be there for you to ask ANY questions you might have, but having that e-community be part of your support system, well, it really helps. Everyone heals differently and all the effects of any type of surgery, so this website helped me tremendously when it came to understanding some of the things I went through afterwards and still am. If you or someone you know is about to or just had a hysterectomy, tell them to check this site out. I do have to admit that it is a little bit confusing at first when you get to the home page and to find what you're looking for...but take some extra time to look at the different tabs and you'll find your way around soon enough. I love how it emails you your hysterectomy checkpoints. It gives you an idea of what to expect each step along the way as you prepare and recover from surgery. I particularly appreciated the different forums too. Especially the ones that were in line with your scheduled surgery. So, instantly you have this group of women, going through the same things you are! You can ask them if they're feeling this way or that way...it really helps! I'm planning to go back to work at 6 weeks post op... though my doc is recommending 8. I've had plenty of rest, thanks to my family and I'm hoping to be close to 100% by the time I get back to work. I'll plan to still to take it easy for quite sometime as even now, it's still a little exhausting to be up and about for more than a few hours. I can only imagine after a full day's work. From what I've been told and also have read, many women don't feel like themselves again for at least 6 months to a year. Physically and emotionally. So hang in there girls! So with that, I hope you'll be patient with me as I get back on the saddle so to speak and I will also be patient with myself. Check out hystersisters.com.
