Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Fashion Designers? [Amazon, Stitch Fix, Myntra]
Every time I visit any Fashion events, this has been one of the topics that often come up. Can Artificial Intelligence AI replace fashion designers? Fashion designer thinks it can not but tech folks say it can be done. So I started researching into what has been done and found 3 great examples for you. I want to give you a glimpse of what Amazon, Stitch Fix, and Myntra have been doing and using AI to design clothes. *************** Amazon: AI fashion designer *************** The effort points to ways in which Amazon and other companies could try to improve the tracking of trends in other areas of retail—making recommendations based on products popping up in social-media posts, for instance. And it could help the company expand its clothing business * “There’s been a whole move from companies like Amazon trying to understand how fashion develops in the world,” says Kavita Bala, a professor at Cornell University who took part in a workshop on machine learning and fashion organized by Amazon last week. A number of forward-thinking retailers are already using social networks like Instagram and Pinterest to track the latest fashion trends and react quickly. An Amazon team at Lab126, a research center based in San Francisco, has developed an algorithm that learns about a particular style of fashion from images, and can then generate new items in similar styles from scratch—essentially, a simple AI fashion designer. This work uses a cutting-edge tool called a generative adversarial network, or GAN. It consists of two deep neural networks operating in tandem to learn efficiently from raw data. The GAN internalizes the properties of a particular style simply by looking at lots of examples, and it can then apply that style to an existing item of clothing. *************** Stitch Fix *************** The in-house brand of subscription fashion startup Stitch Fix, Hybrid Designs employs a data science team that works with the company’s order data to predict which clothes customers will want to wear. The team identifies viable gaps in the company’s inventory—clothes that people would buy but a designer hasn’t made yet, says Stitch Fix chief algorithm officer Eric Colson. It works like this: A collection of three algorithms generate a starting point. The first algorithm picks three “parents,” recommended pieces of clothing that could be either combined or used as a template for a new piece. The second suggests three different attributes that have been shown to complement the parents’ style—maybe a different neckline or sleeves. And the third throws in a little bit of randomness, a suggestion that isn’t typical for the previously suggested style but might be interesting. Together, these algorithms search through a space of 30 trillion potential combinations of, for example, blouse attributes, to ultimately give just nine suggestions. *************** Myntra - Moda Rapido *************** Algorithms that would get their machines to produce images of T-shirts based on the discovered favorable attributes. It turned out that one category of the machine-created designs outsold the comparable category in each of the other 12 private brands owned by Myntra. Some of the other machine-created designs sold poorly, but the company knew they were onto something really big. “The core of the Rapid idea was to do fast fashion in an intelligent way, given that we have both a tech and a fashion DNA,” said Kenghe. “In the initial phase of the project, there was less machine and more designer-input. Over a period of time, there’s been more machine and less supervision.” Here&Now & Moda Rapido: By September, Moda Rapido and Here&Now were together bringing in sales of Rs12-13 crore every month, making them among the top 15 brands at Myntra. How to Spy on Competitor's Website Traffic Sources? (with a FREE Tool)
You will discover competitor analytics as: time spent by users, a number of pages clicked, top keywords, social media traffic breakdown & much more. Having knowledge about competitor analytics can help you get a head start on your marketing strategies. There are multiple competitor analysis tools available but Similarweb is one of my favorites. Because it gives a significant amount of information for Free. With Similarweb you can keep tabs on your competition and see where the site traffic is coming from and how many websites hits they are getting per month. You can also check out various social media traffic sources and use to create your marketing strategies. But one of my fav thing about this tool is that it enables me to see which country my competition is getting traffic from. So, if I see a particular country that I am not targeting with my ads but my competition is getting traffic, I would start runnings ads targeting audience in that country. How to SPY on Your Competitors Facebook Ads? 4 FREE Tools you can use.
Use these FREE Tools and SAVE Hours of A/B testing time by understanding Your Competitors Facebook Advertisements. The goal of this video is not to show you how to copy and paste your competitor's ads. The goal is for you to understand what is the 'research process,' so you can do that for your niche. As you start your competitive research, create an excel file with 3 worksheets, one for Small, Intermediate & Rockstar competitors. Within each worksheet create a list of at least 5-7 competitors and as you use these tools (adespresso, adicted.io, moat) start taking screen shots of the ads and add them to your worksheet. You will soon begin to see how early state competitor runs its Facebook advertisements VS a brand name. You will notice that a brand name competitor will showcase their 'brand name' in bold letters in the Facebook ads VS an early stage competitor who would focus on the "action" they want the user to take based on the "benefits/features" of their product. How To Do Split Testing for Facebook Ads
Facebook advertising is a great way to drive traffic to your e-commerce store. But running ads is just the beginning and you should always be split testing your Facebook ads or ab testing your Facebook ads in order to find out which ones lead to most conversions. Because some image/text/headline combination might appear relevant to one set of customer and other combination could appear relevant to other. That's why ongoing Facebook ad optimization is very critical. Each Ad has multiple segments that you can ab test. eg: - Text on top - Image - Headline - Description - URL name - Button But you should always split test 1 thing at a time. For example, for your first test, create 4 duplicates of one ad and only change the image. And the run the ad so you have around 500 - 700 clicks and see which Ad gives you the most conversions. Select that Ad, and for next split test, use that image but test out 4 variations of the Text on Top and let it run. Fashion designers, fashion boutiques, fashion startups often ask me what can I do if I can only spend 5 dollars on Facebook advertising? My answer always is that there is a lot you can do on social media advertising by only spending $5 Facebook ads. But the trade off is Time. If you have a limited budget you would need to spend time researching about your customers & their needs prior to spending any money on Facebook ads. Fashion designers often fall into 2 categories/scenarios: 1. They are just starting out and don't have paying customers, yet. 2. They have been in business for 1-2 years and have at least 300-500 paying customers and few hundred website visitors per month. Regardless of which category you fall into, you can use $5 Facebook ad strategy to gain more customers. Scenario #1: a, You would need to spend the time to create your ideal customer persona eg: gender, age, household income, etc. You need to look into the day into the life of your customer and figure out what they do, and where would your product fit in. b, Find out your key competitors and start noticing what type of ads they are running and study their marketing funnels. Supply Chain & Demand Projection: H&M announced that they were sitting on $4.3B of inventory, that is a lot of money that is sitting and being wasted. AI Solution: Using AI, it can use prediction analysis that which type of clothes, might not sell and create a combination of discounts, free shipping, product combo’s etc. to clear out the inventory that is most likely not to sell after a certain time period. Rue La La collaborated with MIT to experiment with AI technologies to improve demand forecasting. They developed a system that helped them predict the demand for products in their flash sales and accounted for data sources including brand information, product type, color, price and a range of other factors. This enabled them to optimize prices and generate a 10 percent increase in revenue without the extra burden of unused inventory or supplier costs.4 German e-commerce player Otto uses deep learning to analyze billions of transactions and is 90 percent accurate in forecasting what it will sell in the next 30 days. This insight allows it to order a couple of hundred thousand items each month from vendors with no human intervention. It has also cut surplus stock by 20 percent and reduced costly returns by 2 million items each year. 2. Photos for a new collection When you create new clothing line or launch a new collection, you have to take photos of all items to be posted on your website. It can be extremely cost sensitive because it involves models, photographers, makeup artists etc and you have ot manage their schedules and re-shoots can be a pain in the ass. There are AI companies that are enabling retailers to shoot images by putting clothes on mannequins and then replacing the mannequin with the 3D Image of the actual model. They did 3.GAP: Sorting Orders at Warehouse When you order a product on GAP or Amazon or any other online retailer, there are actual people on the other side picking and sorting products for you. It is a huge cost for because retailers have to pay them, it takes a longer time to sort products and most warehouses can’t function 24/7. AI Solution: GAP is testing and working with Kindered AI to train robots to pick and sort its products. * Imagine: Robots pick items of different sizes, puts them together in a nice box and drone brings it to your door. 4. Inventory Checks and Re-stocking Problem: today human beings go visit the racks and check if items need to be restocked. AI Solution: Camera’s and sensors can automagically sense what is missing and needs to be restocked and can pre-order it for you. And they can pair the understanding of the seasons, sales data etc to make sure they only order the item that is more likely to sell. And instead of getting new items manufactured, they can check if that item or similar item exists at other locations but its probability of selling at that location is low it, it can order it from there or ship it to the customer from there. 5. AI Designing Clothes Amazon is developing AI that combines hundreds of thousands of designs, fabrics etc to create something new that it interprets that could sell. Myntra’s brand Moda Rapido is powered by AI and works without human intervention to offer computer-generated designs, including T-shirts, jeans, kurtas, and shoes. The system is fed data from various sources, including customer data, social media, fashion publications etc., and creates thousands of combinations of designs, then hones in on what would sell well. It now has the highest gross margins compared to all other 14 brands under the Myntra portfolio. 6. Trend Forecasting Trend forecasting is big business. There are companies such as WGSN does that. They have employees that go thru thousands of images, look for patterns, new trends and sort them out to do trend forecast. AI: Analyzing which images, colors, style of photos that didn’t exist before but are getting high engagement. Combine that with data from hashtags, location, influencer, color distribution etc. AI can help analyze & predict upcoming trends.

And then I was a little designer brand new out of the fashion institution, not knowing what I was doing, but I was presenting my collection at the garden. So I went through the necessary permissions. But the system is duff. So, um, apparently ludy gardens comes under many, many different corporations, so it became a very political event and I had to get permissions and licenses, which apparently I was not aware of. 01:57 I got a few thinking that that was all that I needed. So it became a huge challenge and a huge, um, the press went mad, especially Indian Express. They had me on the cover of every new, every newspaper for the next five days, which was super fun. At one level I had, I had no budgets to pay for publicity. So then I was on the front page and everybody was saying, who is this with dewberry, you know, we've never heard of barry and I became a household name with my very first show. So I really don't take any, any challenge as a problem. It's, there's no such thing as an impossible situation. And I think it's fun to experiment. It's fun to, you know, pave your own path and do something new. Or 02:47 when I was 02:47 in design school lives to go to the library and all I was looking for because I used to enjoy embroideries and I was inspired by embroideries. All I looked for books and Roswell, Assad and weren't many books, but you know, they used to have these uh, design magazines and they'd be a mention of embroidery by Francois lasage. So I've, I've went to London and I looked for books in libraries, but there was very little that I really found, and this was this strange, uh, but I think it was destined. I went to Paris, I think this was [inaudible] 93 or 92. And I was sitting with a very, very important person from Cartier in Paris and she said, is there anybody in the fashion business that you would like to meet? And the only name that completely lit up. And she says, she laughed at me and she said, you are you asking for the moon 03:42 He meets nobody. But, uh, she said, I'll give you his phone number and if you get somewhere, it's completely all luck. All I did for the next four days in Paris was go to a booth, make a goal to a for go have a coffee, go back to the booth. I did this. I think I must have made about 30 calls to him. And, uh, I didn't speak French and the secretary would pick up and she would just speak in French. I had no way to get to him. Finally, I tried really hard and I said to you, would you, do you know somebody who speaks English in the office? 05:04 So all these number ones that everybody was trying to say, I was the first here and number one here. Product Pricing Strategies: What to Say When Customers says Your Product is Expensive
Customers always want to haggle on price. You have spent weeks on figuring out your pricing methods and come up with strategy and tactics of pricing only to find out customers says your product is too expensive. Two Reasons why the customer would think that: 1: They don't have the money to pay 2: They think they are not getting enough Value Not having enough money to pay is just an excuse. Think about it. If you are selling a SaaS fashion product that costs $20 or $30 or $40 per month. A product that would help customer increase his business. $20-$40 is the cost of going out and getting 2 drinks in San Francisco. The customer clearly has the money to spend but they just want to haggle you for the price and spend that on drinks. Do you really want a client like that? But if they say, "they are not getting enough value," now that is something you need to pay attention to. Talk to and work with your customer and ask them what features they wished the product had, so they will pay for it? Get customer's buy-in and they add those features in the product but DO NOT reduce the pricing.

Customer Validation Process: A Simple Test to Validate Potential Customer (MUST WATCH)
Customer Analysis is very important when you are doing New product development. But how do you typically do it, we ask our family and friends if they like our product. and most of the time, since they like you they will say yes just to be supportive but that could be detrimental to your company. In this video, I share 1 simple test that I do every time when I am doing customer validation process. It takes few seconds when you are meeting with a potential customer, especially the ones that say they love your product. I call it "The Credit Card Test" It has helped me immensely when validating customers and before I launch any product or any new service, if a customer does not qualify the credit card test, I don't add them into my list of potential clients. Getting Indexed by Google is extremely critical for any website especially if you are doing any type of content marketing or selling any product. because if Google doesn’t know you exist, how will they ever send traffic your way? In this tutorial, I m going to show you How to submit the site to google to get indexed by Google, the right way. Sitemaps are a way Google search robots figure out where is the content on your site and how to get to it. The easiest way to get your sitemaps is via Yoast SEO plugin, you can use any other plugins as well but Yoast works pretty well. Then you can link your sitemap to Google via Google webmaster tool or Search Console. It will show you if there are any crawl errors, you can fix those and once it's linked, you are set.
