Baby stolen at birth: Kamiyah Mobley found 18 years later and reunited with real parents - TomoNews

03:51
WALTERBORO, SOUTH CAROLINA — A girl stolen from the hospital as a newborn baby has just been discovered alive, having lived her entire life with a different identity. In July 10, 1998, little Kamiyah Mobley was born at a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Eight hours later, she was taken away by a woman posing as a nurse, Gloria Williams. After detectives realized where the girl was living, they reconnected the 18-year-old with her biological parents. On January 14, she was taking selfies with them. Moments after she was born, her young mother, 16 at the time, was approached by a woman wearing flowered hospital scrubs. The woman happened to be carrying a purse, which the family thought was a bit odd. She whisked the baby away saying it had a fever, and just like that, the baby was gone. Every year, her devastated mother would wrap a piece of birthday cake for her, and leave it in the freezer. It wasn’t until late last year that a couple of hot tips led detectives to a girl living in a small town in South Carolina. They tracked her down, to find a young woman named Alexis Manigo. The authorities asked her for a DNA sample, and after eventually attaining it with a warrant, they found out they had a match. On the same day, the woman the girl had lived her entire life thinking was her mom was arrested by police. The baby-snatcher, 51-year-old Gloria Williams, has been charged with first-degree kidnapping and third-degree interference with custody. She faces life in prison, if convicted. Now, the teen, who most know as Alexis Manigo, is left to pick up the pieces and figure out how to go forward. She says despite the revelations of her kidnapping, she still has nothing but love for Gloria Williams, the woman who raised her and gave her a happy life. In her eyes, one mistake doesn’t change that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Yellowstone volcano eruption: How NASA plans to protect Earth from a supervolcanic end - TomoNews

01:59
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, U.S.A — NASA plans to stop the Yellowstone caldera from erupting by pumping it full of water and siphoning geothermal energy from it. According to the BBC, the space agency has developed a plan to drill underneath Yellowstone and pump it's magma chamber full of water, extracting the heat. Cooling the magma rock would occur at a rate of 1 meter per year, meaning it could take thousands of years to eliminate the risk of eruption. The cost of NASA's plan is estimated to be US$3.5 billion, the BBC reports. The space agency expects the clean energy derived from heat extraction would offset this via lower power costs and the creation of geothermal plants in the area. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Phone charger injuries: Nebraska teen’s charger-in-foot injury goes viral - TomoNews

05:04
PAPILLION, NEBRASKA — An 18 year-old girl’s viral pictures of her nasty charger-in-foot injury are teaching kids everywhere why they should always clean their rooms. Julia Pechar, 18, was watching Netflix last Tuesday inside her seriously messy bedroom when she got up to get some popcorn, and when she did, she stepped on the charger. According to the Omaha World-Herald, the high-school student then took the photos of her foot and her room. She called on her mom Mary, who pulled the charger out. The tweet accompanying the photos reads: “When your room is this messy, you have to accept the consequences of not being able to see where you step”. The photos have been retweeted some 13,000 times and have been featured in news around the globe. Pechar was treated with a tetanus shot and is on antibiotics following the injury, reported the Omaha World-Herald. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Tree man disease: Bangladesh man receives 16 surgeries to restore hands to normal - TomoNews

05:35
DHAKA, BANGLADESH — It may have taken a year and an insane number of surgeries, but this Bangladeshi man couldn’t be happier to finally have his hands and feet back. CNN reports that Abul Bajander suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare disease that began causing lesions to appear on his skin at age 10. The lesions worsened over time, eventually encompassing both his hands and making it difficult for him to make a living as a rickshaw driver. Bark-like growths had also started sprouting from his hands and feet, making it impossible to do anything except scratch his neck. The 27-year-old has been dubbed “Tree Man” by international media, and is one of only four people in the world to ever be diagnosed with the disease. Doctors in Dhaka offered to treat him free of charge, and moved him and his family to the hospital last February to begin the first of many groundbreaking surgeries. Sixteen operations later, doctors have removed eleven pounds of growth and restored tree man’s hands. He’ll still need a few more surgeries for beautification, but he now can at least eat, write, and hold his 3-year-old daughter on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Subway Jared beaten: Inmate who beat up Jared Fogle explains why he did it - TomoNews

06:09
LITTLETON, COLORADO — Former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle got the pulp punched out of him by another prisoner, as he serves a 15-year sentence for sexually abusing minors and storing a trove of child pornography on his computer. Now, that man has come forward with his explanation of why he attacked Fogle. In a letter obtained by TMZ, Steve Nigg, 61, reveals that Fogle was looked at “like a God” by the other child molesters at the penitentiary. As a result, Fogle apparently carried himself as if he was royalty, and hired personal bodyguards to protect him on the grounds. But when Nigg cornered him in the yard on January 29, 2016, one of Fogle’s bodyguards stepped aside to let Nigg pulverize him. The incident report states Jared suffered a bloody nose, scratches to the neck, and redness and swelling to his face. Nigg walked away with a small cut on his hand and an abrasion on his left knee from the concrete, but it also robbed him of the good credit he’d built up for a chance at early release. He says he spent many months in solitary confinement, and lost privileges such as commissary and email access. Still, he admits he has no regrets, and claims he did it for Fogle’s victims and their families. Following the assault, Nigg was moved to a prison far away in Oklahoma, because he reportedly told prison officials if given the chance, he’d attack Fogle again for his hatred toward child molesters. Nigg previously served 13 years of a 15-year sentence for robbing a motel clerk, a convenience store and a gas station at gunpoint. After being released in 1990, he was put back behind bars in 2011 for being in possession of a firearm with three previous convictions of a violent felony. By most accounts from those who knew him after his first sentence was completed, Nigg was a decent man who was actively involved in his community, even teaching kids martial arts, and voluntarily dressing up like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny for annual holidays. ------------------------------------------------------- For news that's fun and never boring, visit our channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/TomoNewsUS Subscribe to stay updated on all the top stories: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt-WqkTyKK1_70U4bb4k4lQ?sub_confirmation=1 Visit our website for all the latest, uncensored videos: http://us.tomonews.net Check out our Android app: http://bit.ly/1rddhCj Check out our iOS app: http://bit.ly/1gO3z1f Stay connected with us here: Facebook http://www.facebook.com/TomoNewsUS Twitter @tomonewsus http://www.twitter.com/TomoNewsUS Google+ http://plus.google.com/+TomoNewsUS/ Instagram @tomonewsus http://instagram.com/tomonewsus -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Earthquake proof: Japan building made quake-safe by curtain of cables anchoring it down - TomoNews

06:33
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Hero golden retriever: Injured owner saved from freezing to death on NYE by loyal dog - TomoNews

06:14
HARBOR SPRINGS, MICHIGAN — The year 2017 started out horribly for one Michigan man, who spent New Year’s Day injured and helpless in the snow. Luckily, it was man’s best friend to the rescue. The Petoskey News Review reports that around 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 31, Bob (the newspaper did not publish his name citing “privacy reasons”) ran out in his slippers and pajamas to get another log for his fire. Halfway there, he slipped and fell on the ice, breaking his neck, which rendered him paralyzed. Unable to move, he screamed for help. But with the nearest neighbor a quarter mile away, it was his 5-year-old golden retriever Kelsey that ran to his side. The temperature dipped to freezing, but Kelsey stayed by Bob, barking for help and licking his face and hands to keep him warm. The 64-year-old lost consciousness, but Kelsey’s howling eventually got the attention of a neighbor, who finally discovered Bob 20 hours later. He was rushed to the hospital, where a doctor performed emergency surgery to save him. Miraculously, he didn’t have frostbite, and is recovering nicely — a feat he claims he owes to two heroes: his dog, and his doctor. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Eyeball tattoo: Model might get eye removed after eyeball tattoo goes horribly wrong - TomoNews

05:54
ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian model could be losing one of her eyes after a botched procedure left it swollen and purple. The Washington Post reports that months ago, Catt Gallinger had her sclera stained by a tattoo artist who was also her then-boyfriend. The artist was horribly inexperienced. He didn't mix the ink with saline, and used a large needle instead of a small one. The injection went too deep into the eye, delivering too much undiluted purple ink in one go, and resulting in an infection. Gallinger felt intense pain shortly afterward, and began leaking purple ink from her eye. She was prescribed antibiotic eye drops, which only helped spread the infection. Soon, a clump formed around her cornea and her eyes swelled shut. Doctors were supposed to operate on the 24-year-old so they could cut out the lump, then do an amniotic tissue graft to replace lost tissue. But when Gallinger attempted to go in for surgery without sedation in November, she suffered the worst panic attack of her life. The missed operation has put her at a higher risk of eye loss, and though sedated surgery is still a possibility, she claims she's now considering eye removal. Gallinger has been open about her ordeal, and hopes it will serve as a cautionary tale to anyone wanting to get similarly risky procedures done. The Ontario government has since added a ban on cosmetic eye tattoos to avoid more cases like Gallinger's. Switched at birth: DNA test results reveal 28yo man in China not related to his parents - TomoNews

06:45
CHINA — A mother in China is struggling to cope with DNA test results that have revealed the child she has raised for 28 years is not her flesh and blood. The woman, surnamed Zhang, claims as the boy grew up, many of her friends would often comment about how oddly handsome he looked compared to his father, saying he was "too good looking." In an interview with Kan Kan News, Zhang admits the boy "has big eyes and a high nose bridge" and that "his father is not very good looking." The ugly-dad complex continued to bother Zhang's husband to no end, so much so she claims it eventually led to the couple's divorce in 2004. Unable to let things go, in 2011, the man convinced them all to take a DNA test, and sure enough, the boy was not theirs, biologically speaking. Unable to accept the news, the family members took another DNA test in 2016, and the results came back the same. Zhang is now suing for 1.3 million yuan and hopes to find out what happened to her real child, while helping Wang Ye track down his real parents. In a statement released this week, the hospital says it has launched an investigation, and will accept responsibility for the mistake if it is proven that it was at fault. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Military technology 2017: DARPA testing robot warship that can hunt enemy submarines - TomoNews

05:53
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — The U.S. military is currently testing an autonomous sea vessel with the ability to track enemy submarines. The Sea Hunter is being trialled by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It’s designed primarily to hunt submarines equipped with quiet electric-diesel engines. The 40-meter-long vessel can travel at 31 miles per hour and has no armaments. Its design resembles a Polynesian outrigger canoe. This helps it navigate the ocean and handle challenging 6-meter-high waves. According to the Department of Defence, advanced software and hardware allow it to operate autonomously around other vessels and remain at sea for months at a time. Testing is expected to finish in 2018. If it is successful, it will be handed over to the U.S. Navy. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. WWII bomb: Unexploded bomb that could destroy an entire block defused in Frankfurt - TomoNews

06:06
FRANKFURT, GERMANY — Explosives experts in Frankfurt on Sunday defused a massive bomb — a remnant of the last World War more than 70 years ago. CNN reports that the 1.4 ton HC 4000 bomb was found buried at a construction site close to Goethe University's Frankfurt campus on Tuesday. The discovery prompted authorities to cordon off a 1.5-kilometer radius danger zone around the explosive. Over 60,000 people were evacuated from the area, which was home to hospitals, retirement homes, and the Bundesbank, Germany's central bank. Dubbed 'Blockbuster', the British World War II-era bomb could reportedly generate an explosion capable of flattening an entire block. Of the estimated 1.5 million tons of munitions dropped on Germany by Allied forces, some 15% failed to explode and ended up getting buried, according to the New York Times. Experts say over 2,000 tons of unexploded weaponry are found in the country each year. Despite having a dedicated bomb-disposal unit, Germany's unexploded bombs remain a problem. The aging munitions could become more brittle and unstable, and are reportedly being spotted in harder-to-reach areas, reports the BBC. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Future motorcycles: Honda self-balancing Riding Assist tech keeps bike balanced - TomoNews

04:02
LAS VEGAS — Honda has unveiled a well-balanced piece of motorcycle tech designed to help riders stay in the saddle at low speeds. The Riding Assist concept bike has an adjustable front fork that assumes a wider angle to increase stability and its own motor attached to the front wheel, TechCrunch reported. As anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver a big bike out of a parking lot at low speed knows, keeping balance at 2 or 3 miles an hour is one of the trickiest aspects of riding. The bike was revealed earlier this week at tech tradeshow CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although there’s no plans to bring it to market soon, the concept bike shows how Honda’s investment in robotics can have spin-off benefits for its vehicles. The technology behind the Riding Assist bike was honed in the development of both Honda’s humanoid Asimo robot and UNI-CUB scooter, according to TechCrunch. Personal robots like Asimo are likely still a decade away from being ready to be sold to consumers. However, the legacy technology from the development of Asimo and the UNI-CUB could help bring real improvements to Honda’s vehicles much sooner than that. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ambulance drone: Texas company argodesign unveils done that can be used as an ambulance - TomoNews

04:28
AUSTIN, TEXAS — A Texas-based design firm has illustrated plans for an ambulance drone that can help transporting patients faster and more efficiently than regular ambulances or helicopters. The concept of ambulance drone was submitted by argodesign to Co.Design’s Body Week, which features innovative technologies mainly concerning health and related subjects. The ambulance drone is modelled after a standard quadcopter, which is roughly the size of a compact car. The drone can follow a GPS location, be remotely controlled by a pilot, or a combination of both. It can travel on autopilot, while a pilot can control the drone remotely in case of difficult takeoffs and landings. One single pilot can also control a whole fleet of ambulance drones remotely. The drone is able to travel above traffic or other obstacles on the ground, so that it can arrive at its location faster than regular ambulances. Given its relatively small size, the drone could land almost anywhere. NASA’s New Horizons space ship only 2 years away from its next target after Pluto flyby - TomoNews

07:27
SPACE — NASA’s New Horizons mission is just two years away from its next target, a small Kuiper Belt object that orbits nearly a billion miles beyond Pluto. New Horizons is scheduled to fly by 2014 MU69 on Jan. 1, 2019, making it the most distant object humans have ever explored. 2014 MU69 measures between 25 km to 45 km across. Scientists are not sure how bright the object is. Its albedo reading, the measure of how much light reflects from a surface, may be 0.04 or slightly brighter. By comparison, Pluto has an albedo reading between 0.49 to 0.66, while Mars has a reading of 0.15. New Horizons is currently speeding at a velocity of 14.32 km per second relative to the sun. It is almost halfway between Pluto and its next target, a Kuiper Belt object called 2014 MU69. New Horizons was designed to fly well past Pluto. It carries extra hydrazine fuel for a Kuiper Belt object flyby and its communications system is designed to work from far beyond Pluto. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Eclipse eye damage: Woman gets crescent-shaped eye burn after staring at solar eclipse - TomoNews

07:21
NEW YORK CITY — A woman found out first hand how a solar eclipse fries your eyes, after coming away from the Great American Eclipse with a crescent-shaped eye burn. CNN reports that on August 21, Nia Payne had gone to her boyfriend's workplace at Staten Island to see the eclipse. She peeked at the sun with her naked eye for a few seconds before borrowing glasses from a woman nearby. The 26-year-old didn't know what eclipse glasses were supposed to look like, but claims the sun still seemed bright through the pair she had on. Hours later, she noticed her vision getting blurry, and she began seeing a weird dark spot. She lost partial vision in her left eye the next day. Doctors examining her eyes were shocked to find that the damaged area in the left retina was crescent-shaped, making it look exactly like the eclipse. They suspect that the glasses she used were either defective or fake, which allowed solar radiation to penetrate through and cause retinal damage. The condition, known as solar retinopathy, is permanent and is currently untreatable. Instead, Payne has had to retrain her vision to cope, but she'll probably have a permanent crescent-shaped void in her sight for the rest of her life. 05:01
OKLAHOMA CITY — Police are looking for a man who last Friday tried to pick up an 8-year-old boy and walk away with him. The incident took place during a wrestling event at Oklahoma City State Fairgrounds. The man is pictured grabbing the boy from behind and then trying to walk away with him. According to a post by the Oklahoma City Police on their Facebook page, the child kicked and screamed until the stranger put him down. The man then fled the scene. Security was reportedly tight at the fairgrounds, where some 2,000 people were in attendance, but no guards saw the incident unfold, reported local news outlet KFOR-TV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Passenger’s fart forces American Airlines flight to land, aircraft evacuated - TomoNews

05:48
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA— Passengers on an American Airlines flight were all evacuated on Sunday afternoon when someone farted so hard that it made people sick. An unknown passenger reportedly passed gas and it stunk so bad that it warranted an actual deplaning. The fart apparently made passengers on the plane feel nauseated and overcome with headaches, CBS-affiliate WNCN reported. The plane quickly landed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina and passengers were let off the aircraft. Luckily, no casualties were reported from the incident. American Airlines later released a statement that said they did have an aircraft from Charlotte travelling Raleigh. The flight landed at 2:19 p.m. local time, and went out of service for an actual mechanical issue — and odor in the cabin. But it was not due to “passed gas”. Farts, flatus, or flatulence can actually make you sick. It is comprised of minor sulfur gas components — including hydrogen sulfide, and depending on the amount, it can cause headaches, nausea, skin and eye irritation. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Burglary gone wrong: Home intruder gets an unpleasant and deadly shower surprise - TomoNews

05:45
BELFAIR, WASHINGTON — A homeowner was arrested on Saturday for sending an intruder to a dirtnap who was taking a shower in one of his homes. The homeowner, Bruce Fanning, has now been charged with a second-degree no no, Komo News reported. The man, now deceased, was identified as Nathaniel Joseph Rosa, 31, of Bothell by the Mason County coroner’s office. The homeowner owns two properties on the same street. One house that he says he he lives in and the other which he reportedly uses to run an internet-based business, according to Komo News. The house where he runs the business is where the incident took place, Mason County sheriff’s deputies said. According to police, the homeowner said he went over to the house around 8 a.m. and discovered that his front door had been kicked in. He later discovered Rosa in the shower and they exchanged some words. The homeowner then went back to house that he lives in to retrieve his firearm. He came back to introduce Rosa — who was still sans clothes — to the 2nd Amendment. The homeowner then called 911 and said that he had put a burglar down. Authorities don’t believe the homeowner gave Rosa any warnings before discharging his weapon. Police said the homeowner is cooperating with detectives. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. SpaceX Dragon 2 and Boeing CST-100 Starliner pushing 'new space race' for NASA - TomoNews

06:54
WASHINGTON — NASA says it may soon be able to launch astronauts from U.S. soil to the International Space Station. Important project milestones are coming up for NASA's two commercial crew partners: Boeing and SpaceX, according to AP. Several flight tests, including manned missions, are slated for 2018. Boeing is working on the CST-100 Starliner. The spacecraft is designed to send up to seven astronauts to the space station. Three Starliners are currently in production, with one planned to carry astronauts next year. SpaceX, which has flown cargo missions to the space station with its Dragon spacecraft, plans to use the Dragon 2 to send astronauts to space. The Dragon 2 is the latest version of SpaceX's Dragon capsule model, which can carry seven astronauts. Boeing and SpaceX must show that both of their systems are ready to start regular flights to the space station in order to meet NASA's requirements. SpaceX has its first test flight set for February, while Boeing's launch is planned for June. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Vertical farming: Plenty receives $200 million investment from tech giants - TomoNews

07:46
SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco startup Plenty specialized in vertical farming has secured $200 million from investors including Japanese media corporation SoftBank, the parent company of Google, Alphabet and Amazon. Plenty grows their plants vertically on the sides of a tall tower. Lights are also arranged vertically to give the plants maximum amount of exposure. The vertical farm can grow up to 350 times more produce than conventional farm in the same amount of space, using less water too, Fast Company reported. According to the BBC, the firm is planning on building indoor vertical farms with the size up to five acres, which is roughly the size of big supermarkets like Walmart. The facilities will be built next to large cities in order to reduce the amount of delivery time. "We believe that Plenty's team will remake the current food system to improve people's quality of life," Masayoshi Son, chief executive of Softbank Group said in a statement. Plenty was founded in 2013. It now has 100 employees in San Francisco and Wyoming. The firm plans to supply its vertically grown food to market this fall. The firm is not the first nor the only firm specializing in vertical farming. Other firms such as Aerofarms, Bowery and Betterlife Growers are all promoting this innovative farming technology. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. You idiot! Stupid tourists' photo op damages 800-year-old stone coffin - TomoNews

07:22
SOUTHEND ON SEA, UK — An ordinary day at a museum in the UK went horribly wrong when a family's failed photo op damaged an 800-year-old coffin. According to the BBC, on August 4, a family was visiting Prittlewell Priory[e] Museum in Southend-on-Sea. Hoping to snap a morbid photo, the parents reportedly reached over an exhibit barrier to put their child inside an 800-year-old ancient sandstone coffin. In the process of picture-taking, the offending family managed to knock off a chunk of the sarcophagus[f]. The family did not say a word and fled the scene, but were caught on the museum's surveillance cameras. According to the conservator, the coffin was found on the grounds of the monk's residence in 1921 and has been displayed in the Prittlewell Priory Museum ever since. It used to contain a skeleton that the museum says could have belonged to a senior monk, so arguably, it is a valuable artifact. In response to the photo-op incident, Prittlewell Priory[g] Museum's conservator Claire Reed said the staff was "shocked and upset", but added that the damage was repairable. The museum said they did not expect people to actually get into the artifacts, and they plan to completely enclose the stone coffin in the future. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Mexico border tunnel: Chinese and Mexican nationals arrested at smuggling tunnel - TomoNews

05:38
OTAY MESA, CALIFORNIA — U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered a cross-border smuggling tunnel near San Diego's Otay Mesa port of entry after dozens of illegal immigrants emerged from it on Saturday. The cross-border smuggling tunnel was found just north of the secondary fence in the vicinity of the Otay Mesa port of entry. The tunnel allegedly began in a building on Calle Mar Bermejo in the Garita de Otay area in Tijuana. Border agents were patrolling the area at around 1:12 a.m. when they saw a large number of men and women on the street who fled when agents approached them. According to NBC News, some of the people tried to climb back into the tunnel, leading the agents to the discovery. The tunnel is described as a crude opening in the ground with a ladder inside. Cross-border tunnels are usually used for smuggle narcotics, but no drugs have been discovered inside this tunnel. A total of 30 people have been detained. Twenty-three were Chinese nationals and seven were Mexicans. Customs and Border Patrol officials told NBC News that there has been an increase in nationals from countries other than Mexico trying to enter the U.S. illegally in the last two years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Guard dog fail: video shows burglars lure unsuspecting pooch out of house using treats - TomoNews

05:37
PEORIA, ARIZONA — A couple of burglars were quick to take advantage of a guard dog who was distracted by a handful of treats. On December 8, the unidentified man and woman pulled up to the house in their Chevy Impala and parked in the driveway. After knocking and realizing no one was home, the man then hopped over the wall and proceeded to the dog door. He didn’t show up empty-handed, carrying some sort of food for the dog. Luring the unsuspecting canine out through the doggy door, the man squeezed his way into the small flap door and proceeded to ransack the home, stealing multiple goods with the greatest of ease. One by one, the thieves carried the furniture to the car, as the dog watched. When they finished packing up the loot into their car, the pooch watched them speed away, leaving him behind in the driveway. Luckily, a neighbour spotted the dog and returned him to his owners. Police are asking for the public’s help to track down the two criminals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Parkour fail: Man plunges 40 feet down chimney trying to film a parkour video - TomoNews

04:20
DENVER — A man fell 40 feet down a chimney of a loft building while trying to film a parkour video. Dustin Hinkle, 26, and a few friends were making the video on the rooftop of the Denver City Lofts last Friday when things went down, CBS Denver reported. Hinkle said he was running, climbing and jumping on the roof of the building when he landed on a chimney cover that gave way. “We were just trying to have some fun, and I jumped off, hung off the edge and my feet were only two feet above the other one, and I dropped down, and I dropped down, and I fell through the top of it,” Hinkle told CBS Denver. After plunging 40 feet down, a cable caught his fall, according to officials. Hinkles was stuck inside the chimney for about two hours. Firefighters entered a vacant apartment and had to rip through the brick to extract him, according to CBS Denver. After getting checked out at the hospital, Hinkle was arrested and charged with trespassing. His friends Jayce Anderson, 23 and Mary Jo McHugh, 20, were also charged with trespassing and with interference of a police officer for reportedly running from police. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Kangaroo attack: Jogger gets 35 stitches from vicious mauling by 2m-tall crazy kangaroo - TomoNews

05:54
TEMPLESTOWE, AUSTRALIA — A personal trainer in Melbourne had to have emergency surgery after being brutally mauled by a large male kangaroo. The Manningham Leader reports that Debbie Urquhart was jogging through a bush track in Templestowe Saturday morning and didn’t see the towering threat that was coming her way. A fully grown 2-meter-tall male kangaroo suddenly jumped at her and knocked her down. It kicked and clawed at her ferociously, shredding her clothes and ripping through her flesh. The 54-year-old played dead to try and get the roo to stop attacking, and soon the big boy backed off. Urquhart got back up and walked half a kilometer back home while bleeding from her injuries. She was rushed to the hospital by husband Robert and ended up getting more than 35 stitches. A kangaroo expert told the ABC that this particular kangaroo’s show of aggression was rare, as unprovoked attacks rarely occur. And while the harrowing encounter hasn’t slowed Urquhart down, she says she probably won’t be going near the tracks anytime soon. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Salt and Ice challenge: Severe burns teach UK schoolboy valuable lesson - TomoNews

05:35
WANSEA, UNITED KINGDOM — A high school student in Wales took part in the internet craze known as the “salt and ice challenge,” and a photograph of his damaged hand is making the rounds on social media. The salt and ice challenge involves placing salt somewhere on the body, and then using an ice cube to press down on the area for as long as possible. Doing this creates a burning sensation in the area, as the salt and the ice combined become significantly colder than the ice on its own, at -18°F (-28°C). Once the participant finally gives up, initially they may feel an immediate numbing sensation in the affected area, meaning they’ve likely experienced nerve damage resulting from second- or third-degree burns, similar to frostbite. The teen’s mother published the photograph of the skin burn to warn other parents of the dangers of this salt and ice challenge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Amazon reforestation: 73 million trees to be planted in tropical reforestation - TomoNews

03:24
BRAZIL — A project in the Amazon rainforest is using a new technique to plant trees in the largest ever tropical reforestation. Conservation International plans to restore 70,000 acres of land cleared for grazing with 73 million trees, Fast Company reported. The trees will be planted in the "arc of deforestation" that stretches across the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Acre, Pará and Rondônia, as well as the Xingu watershed. The planting method is called muvuca, which is Portuguese for a small place with many people. The muvuca method involves spreading hundreds of native tree seeds of various species over deforested land. Natural selection then allows the most suited trees to grow and thrive in a much thicker density than plant-by-plant reforestation. Plant-by-plant techniques usually have a density of 160 plants per hectare, while with muvuca, the density is 2,500 species per hectare. Scientists believe after 10 years, it could reach 5,000 trees per hectare. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Hindenburg explosion: events leading up to Hindenburg disaster and end of airship era - TomoNews

07:07
LAKEHURST, NEW JERSEY — The downing of the Hindenburg airship in New Jersey on May 6, 1937 marked the beginning of the end of airship travel. In the early 1900s, rigid airships, also known as dirigibles or zeppelins, were hailed as the transportation method of the future. The skies were dominated by airships, the most famous of which was the Hindenburg LZ 129. The Hindenburg was a 245-meter-long conventional zeppelin that had a maximum speed of 135 km per hour and a cruising speed of 126 km per hour. In 1936, the Hindenburg inaugurated commercial air service across the North Atlantic by carrying over 1,000 passengers on 10 scheduled round trips between Germany and the United States. On May 6, 1937, headwinds delayed the airship’s journey, and its scheduled arrival in Lakehurst, New Jersey at 6:00 a.m. was postponed to 6:00 p.m. In the meantime, the captain decided to take the passengers on a scenic tour. By noon, the ship had reached Boston, and by 3:00 p.m. the Hindenburg was sailing past the skyscrapers of Manhattan. Reports said the large vessel flying past the city created such a sight that people ran out into the streets to see it. When the aircraft was finally cleared to land, it returned to Lakehurst, approaching the field shortly after 7:00 p.m. at an altitude of approximately 600 feet. The captain initiated a wide left turn to fly in a descending pattern around the north and west of the field, to line up for a landing into the wind to the east. During the landing, hydrogen was valved and three drops of water ballast were ordered in an attempt to keep the ship in level trim. When these efforts failed to level the vessel, six crewmen were ordered to go forward in the ship to add their weight to the bow. The vessel was set to make a high-altitude landing, which meant dropping an anchor from a greater height than it normally would be. This required fewer ground crew members, but the process would take longer. In an attempt to land quickly, the captain reportedly executed a tight S-turn to change the direction of the ship’s landing. This was when things went wrong. Some experts later theorized that this sharp turn overstressed the ship, causing a bracing wire to snap and slash a gas cell. This allowed hydrogen to mix with air to form a highly explosive combination. Witnesses claimed they saw a flutter on top of the airship, which indicated gas leaking from the vessel. A fire soon broke out, although accounts of where it started varied. The flames reportedly quickly burned through the logo on the side of the ship before consuming the rest of the vessel. In the end, 36 people died, but a remarkable number of people survived. Faith in the industry plummeted following the Hindenburg disaster. The event was captured in numerous photographs and in footage, which was broadcast across the globe. The airship industry never recovered. However, dirigibles were losing public favor even prior to the Hindenburg’s downing. Three months before Hindenburg first took flight, Pan American Airways’ M-130 China Clipper made its first scheduled flight across the Pacific. Between the high cost of infrastructure and crew, safety issues, and competition with better technology, passenger airships may have been on their way out even before the Hindenburg disaster took place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Alien: Alien looking worm spotted crawling across rocks in Taiwan - TomoNews

05:48
HSINCHU, TAIWAN — Video of a bizarre, alien-looking insect crawling across rocks in northern Taiwan has been baffling the interwebs after it was posted on Facebook. The creature was discovered by hiker Meilan Huang in Hsinchu. When she first saw it, she thought it was barbed wire. Just when she went to pick it up, the object came to life and started crawling around. After posting it to her hiking group on Facebook, members of the group are taking some wild guesses. Some say it's a proof of aliens, while others say It could be a new creature borne from a genetic mutation that we have never seen before. An entomologist in Taiwan told Taiwan's Apple Daily that the mysterious creature is actually nematomorpha[d] — also known as horsehair worms. In some cases, the worms can grow to about six feet[e] in length. According to University of Kentucky's entomology department, horsehair worms develop in the bodies of insects like mantis, grasshoppers, crickets and cockroaches, and are typically found near wet areas. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Robot heart: Soft robotic sleeve helps simulate heart beating to push blood through - TomoNews

04:29
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — Harvard researchers have developed a soft robotic sleeve that can replicate normal heart muscle movements in order to support failing hearts. The human heart twists as it beats, in a motion similar to wringing and wringing of a towel. In order to mimic this rotational motion, scientists created two sets of silicone robotic sleeves. The first one expands and contracts concentrically while the second one expands and contracts helically. The device is designed to slide over the heart like a sleeve. When inflated with pressurised air, the device can help to boost the amount of blood being pumped. “Soft robotic devices are ideally suited to interact with soft tissue and give assistance that can help with augmentation of function, and potentially even healing and recovery,” Elle T. Roche, first author of the study told Harvard Magazine. According to the Harvard Magazine, about 2.8 million Americans with heart failure suffer from a condition where the heart does not fully contract. However, the robotic sleeve is still at an early stage of development and longer-term animal studies need to be conducted before it could be used in humans ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Spying on people: Man forced to leave favorite lunch spot, thanks to nosy neighbors - TomoNews

07:22
TONAWANDA, NEW YORK — A man in Western New York is bidding farewell to his favored weekly lunch spot after some nosy neighbors called the cops on him. John Pawlowski, aged 36, usually lunches in a nice spot on a street under the shade of a tree. He says he always buys his sandwiches from Tailgate Deli on Delaware Road. Then he heads north and turns right on Zimmerman before stopping in front of a house to eat his sandwich, local media Buffalo News reported. Pawlowski had been doing this routinely for a around a year, during which time an elderly couple had apparently been keeping track of Pawlowski and his weekly lunch ritual. A month ago, the couple decided to follow Pawlowski back to his office parking lot to confront him. They claimed to to have been spying on him for over a year, and did not believe he was only eating a sandwich. However, Barbara Tucker — the owner of the house Pawlowski liked to stop in front of — said she had no knowledge of his weekly lunch visits, and isn’t bothered if he’s out there eating his sandwich. Tucker added that she personally likes to sit in the cemetery to have lunch, as “nobody bothers you in the cemetery”. As for Pawlowski, he explained that he’ll visit his favorite lunch spot once more before finding a new place to eat his sandwiches. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

School dress code: 11-year-old policed for showing shoulders in sleeveless dress - TomoNews

07:02
BILLINGS, MONTANA — Most schools have no problem with girls in sleeveless outfits. But at Lockwood school in Billings, Montana, shoulders are apparently considered scandalous. Yahoo Lifestyle reports that 11-year-old Vegas learned this the hard way when she showed up for picture day in a cute new sleeveless dress over black leggings. The kid had simply dressed up for the perfect photo, but promptly got policed for violating the dress code. It seems the ultra-conservative school board came up with a ridiculous new policy banning bare shoulders. The school even reportedly said the child's shoulders were "distracting." The girl's family was so outraged by the asinine rule that both mom and grandma took to social media to rant. Miffed netizens soon began to chime in, criticizing the school and its dress code for sexualizing young girls. Ultimately, the school did allow the poor student to take her photo in the dress, but forced her to change into something more "appropriate" for the rest of the day. The girl has since been understandably upset, but the administration refuses to discuss the issue further, noting that since the child changed her clothes, the case is closed. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Ghost photobombs: Ghost appears in Georgia teenager’s selfie after fishing trip - TomoNews

06:46
ADEL, GEORGIA — A teenage girl from Georgia got a tingle down her spine when she checked her photos from a recent fishing trip. Haley Ogletree, 13, was taking a selfie last week when she was photobombed by a ghost, according to a Facebook post by her mom, Jessica. Haley and her brother Kolton had gone fishing with their grandparents to celebrate the boy’s birthday. According to their mom, Kolton caught the biggest fish, like EVER!, so maybe the ghost was happy for him. Seems like the photobomb phantom appeared when Kolton was packing the fishing tackle box back in the trunk. Haley’s mom said her son didn’t notice anyone standing there and there were no other people around that day. So there couldn’t possibly be any other explanation for how the man appeared in the photo. Mmmm ... could there? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. HIV vaccine: Experimental new vaccine targets protective HIV sugar-protein shield - TomoNews

06:22
COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND — University of Maryland and Duke University researchers have designed a new vaccine that was able to stimulate an immune response against HIV's protective shield. According to the study published in the journal Cell Chemical Biology, HIV virus cells are covered with a protective protein called GP120, which itself is covered by a sugar shield to help bolster its defenses. Some infected individuals who can keep the virus at bay without medication often have have antibodies that attack the protein. There has been little success in creating a similar vaccine, because the sugars found in the shield resemble sugars in the human body. It's also difficult to engineer antibodies that can be effective against the multiple strains of HIV, which frequently mutate. Using a synthetic chemistry method, scientists have now designed a vaccine combining a gp120 fragment and a sugar molecule, and tested it on HIV-infected rabbits. The vaccine prompted the rabbits' immune systems to produce antibodies that physically bound to gp120 found in four dominant HIV strains. It takes roughly two years to build immunity against HIV, so despite sticking to the virus, the antibodies weren't able to prevent further infection. But the vaccine's ability to induce a strong immune response in a short amount of time is encouraging, and researchers believe further studies can produce a vaccine that can ultimately neutralize the deadly virus. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Hyperloop One test: World’s first full-size hyperloop test in Las Vegas - TomoNews

03:53
LAS VEGAS — Hyperloop One announced last week that it plans to execute a full test within the next three months at Apex Industrial Park in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The test run will cover 500 linear meters, said Nick Earle, the company’s senior vice president of global field operations. “It will levitate, catch the right speed and slow down,” Earle said. “Then what we’ll do, is over the next few months extend that into a few kilometers,” he said. In May 2016, the company successfully tested its levitating electromagnetic motor on an open air sled, reaching speeds of 116 mph, according to Wired. Earle also told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the company is planning to have a full Hyperloop system ready to transport freight by 2020. The hyperloop is based on the idea by Elon Musk of levitating pods that would travel in near-vacuum tubes at speeds of over 700 mph, powered by an electric propulsion system, according to Wired. According to Musk’s calculations, a hyperloop trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles would take only 36 minutes, Wired reported. ------------------------------------------------------- For news that's fun and never boring, visit our channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/TomoNewsUS Subscribe to stay updated on all the top stories: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt-WqkTyKK1_70U4bb4k4lQ?sub_confirmation=1 Visit our website for all the latest, uncensored videos: http://us.tomonews.net Check out our Android app: http://bit.ly/1rddhCj Check out our iOS app: http://bit.ly/1gO3z1f Stay connected with us here: Facebook http://www.facebook.com/TomoNewsUS Twitter @tomonewsus http://www.twitter.com/TomoNewsUS Google+ http://plus.google.com/+TomoNewsUS/ Instagram @tomonewsus http://instagram.com/tomonewsus -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Artificial floating islands tested in Netherlands in order to expand liveable space - TomoNews

07:08
WAGENINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS — The Maritime Research Institute Netherlands is testing a concept of building artificial floating islands to expand the amount liveable space available for the country’s growing population. The island is made up of large floating triangles that connect to each other in a flexible fashion. It could measure 5 km wide. “As sea level rises, cities become overcrowded and more activities are carried out at sea, raising the dikes and reclaiming land from the seas are perhaps no longer an effective solution,” Olaf Waals, project manager of MARIN's floating islands told New Atlas. The floating space could be used for housing and public infrastructures and support renewable energy systems such as wind and solar energy farms. It is still unknown how the floating mega structure could withstand winds and currents and how does living on the island affect the people. Researchers admit the technological challenges to this project are enormous. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Death by caffeine: South Carolina teen died of cardiac arrest from too much caffeine - TomoNews

07:35
CHAPIN, SOUTH CAROLINA — A South Carolina teen is dead after a deadly combo of caffeinated drinks triggered a fatal issue in his normally healthy heart. NBC reports that Davis Allen Cripe collapsed in class on April 26, and died just an hour later. The 16-year-old had multiple caffeinated drinks that day, including a large diet Mountain dew, a cafe latte, and an energy drink, all of which he drank within two hours. An autopsy revealed that he died from a caffeine-induced cardiac event, which was probable arrhythmia, otherwise known as abnormal heart rhythm. According to the Mayo Clinic, a healthy adult can safely consume as much as 400 milligrams of caffeine daily, equivalent to either four cups of coffee, 10 colas, or three to five energy drinks. But for teens aged 13 to 18, the recommended daily intake is only 100 milligrams — that’s a cup of coffee, three colas, or one energy drink. Caffeine prompts the release of the stress hormone norepinephrine, too much of which can cause rapid or irregular heart rate. Not enough blood is pumped into the body as a result, thus damaging or shutting down the brain and other organs. People who have died from caffeine overdoses also experienced seizures, with some reportedly choking on their own vomit. Caffeine does have certain good benefits, and the vast majority consume it with no negative effects. But experts warn that it should be taken in moderation, especially for kids and adolescents. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Green technology: Cooling film can keep buildings cool without power input - TomoNews

06:03
BOULDER, COLORADO — Researchers at the University of Colorado in Boulder have invented a film that can cool buildings without using any power. The new material measures 50 micrometers in width, which is slightly thicker than kitchen aluminium foil. It consists of a transparent polymer, tiny glass beads and a silver layer. The silver layer reflects sunlight through the plastic, preventing it from heating the building while the glass beads constantly emit infrared light and heat through a process called passive radiation cooling. The cooling effect is said to be able to keep the internal temperature of a home at 20 degrees Celsius when the outside temperature is 37 degrees, the Economist reported. "We feel that this low-cost manufacturing process will be transformative for real-world applications of this radiative cooling technology," Xiaobo Yin, co-director of the research and an assistant professor at the university, said in a press release. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Cell regeneration: Nanochip can regrow organs, heal injuries with just one touch - TomoNews

08:31
COLUMBUS, OHIO — Researchers at Ohio State University have developed new technology that allows the body to generate any type of cell to help heal injuries. According to a university press release, the technique, called tissue nanotransfection or TNT, uses a fingernail-sized nanochip which is placed over a patient's skin or tissue. A droplet containing genetic material is placed on top of the chip, and then zapped with an electrical current. The DNA is delivered through channels created by the current, and it reprograms skin cells to turn into specific cell types that can then be used in other parts of the body. When tested on a mouse with a damaged leg, researchers found vascular cells converted from skin cells formed new blood vessels that allowed the leg to heal in two weeks. The non-invasive technology was also able to generate nerve cells in the legs of brain-damaged mice. Once the cells were harvested, they were injected into the brain to help with stroke recovery. The nanochip also tested effectively in pigs and is expected to be approved for human trials within a year. The team's research has been published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Stress effects on health: Pollution can cause stress, lead to heart attack, stroke - TomoNews

01:53
SHANGHAI — New research posits that increased stress hormones from long-term exposure to pollution are connected to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Scientists at China's Fudan University placed 55 students in two groups with functioning and malfuctioning air purifiers inside student dormitories in Shanghai. They observed them over 12 days before swapping the purifiers, then tracked the students for another nine days. Students exposed to dirtier air had increased stress hormones, blood sugar, high blood pressure, poor response to insulin and other ailments, Reuters reported, citing the study. All of these can result in cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes. Students in the group with cleaner air — which meant exposure to only half the amount of pollution — were all found to have had a reduction in stress levels. The study was published this month in the journal Circulation. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Evil twin: Our sun has a long-lost twin that may have wiped out the dinosaurs - TomoNews

07:02
SPACE — Scientists have long believed that stars are born with at least one companion. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much evidence to support this theory, until now. Science Alert reports that a new study on star systems from the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard’s Smithsonian Astrophysical Observer has found that sunlike stars initially form as wide binaries. Some systems, like the Alpha Centauri, even form as triplets. Over the next million years, these stars either come together to form a tight binary, or break apart. Our sun would have been separated by a distance of 500 or more astronomical units from its twin star, before it was believed to have moved farther away. The twin has been dubbed ‘Nemesis’, after scientists hypothesized that it had knocked an asteroid out of orbit and sent it hurtling toward Earth. They say that asteroid eventually collided with our planet and killed off the dinosaurs. Still, Nemesis has never actually been found, and the idea that it may be responsible for catastrophic events on Earth has yet to be proved. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Voyager 1 and 2 2017: NASA's probes beyond the solar system & in the Heliosphere - TomoNews

06:23
SPACE — Forty years after their 1977 launch, NASA's Voyager-1 and Voyager-2 probes are still providing unique insights about space. NASA's Voyager-2 is currently in a region of space known as the Heliosheath. This forms part of the Heliosphere, a giant multi-tiered magnetic bubble originating from the sun in which our solar system resides. The Heliosheath is a turbulent region of space is wrought with 700 kilometer per hour solarwinds. It's past the termination shock, an outer limit of our solar system where these winds are impacted by interstellar winds. Outside the Heliosheath is the Heliopause, an area that balances both winds, sending them back down to the tail of the Heliosphere. Beyond the Heliopause is interstellar space, the space between stars. This is where Voyager-1 is currently located. Both probes are expected to run out of power by 2020. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Cancer cure: Stopping metastasis by breaking cancer’s legs with nanorods - TomoNews

06:49
ATLANTA — A research team led by the Georgia Institute of Technology has developed a new treatment that can potentially stop cancer cells from migrating inside the human body. Cells contain cytoskeletons to give them their shape and to carry out functions such as division and movement. The cytoskeletons produce protrusions called filopodia, which extends from fibers inside the cell known as lamellipodia. The protrusions help cells to shift locations. Lamellipodia and filopodia are overproduced in malignant cancer cells, enabling them to spread around the body at faster speeds. Cancer kills patients often through the spread of malignant cells, which is known as the metastasis process. The experimental treatments include attaching nanorods comprised of a small collection of gold atoms to the integrin of the cells in order to stop the cytoskeleton from overproducing lamellipodia and filopodia. This slows down the migration of malignant cells. A low-energy laser of near-infrared light is then used on the cells. The light is absorbed by the gold nanorods, which then partially melts cancer cells and damages lamellipodia and filopodia. This can bring the migration of the cancer cells to an halt. If desired, the laser light can be adjusted to kill the cancer cells. The experimental treatment shows no observable damage to healthy cells, which is an advantage over commonly used chemotherapy. Scientists also did not see recurrence a of the cancer after it was treated. The research was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Brugada syndrome: Kid's heart stops beating after eating hot dog - TomoNews

05:25
ISTANBUL — A report in the medical journal Pediatric describes how a 9-year-old boy's heart stopped beating after he began eating a hot dog in Istanbul, Turkey. He was later resuscitated. Choking can lead to cardiac arrest in children, but in this case medical staff found the hotdog stimulated the boy's vagus nerve, which in turn triggered an abnormal rhythm that caused his heart to stop. Upon further investigation and an electrocardiogram, he was found to have a rare life-threatening heart rhythm condition known as Brugada Syndrome. The child was later implanted with a defibrillator to help regulate the abnormal heart rhythms via electrical impulses. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans.
