Theme park accident: Father and son severely burned on hot metal slide ride in Utah - TomoNews

01:45
PARK CITY, UTAH — A family’s summer vacation went horribly awry after a day at the theme park turned into a hellish nightmare. Kenny Edwards and his son suffered severe burns while on a slide at Utah’s Olympic Park, and believe the park’s management is not giving riders enough warning about the slide’s dangers, according to a Facebook page the family set up about their ordeal. On July 3, Edwards and his 4-year-old son were going down the Alpine slide when the sled they were on stopped at a turn and sent them tumbling onto the hot metal. Edwards grabbed the edge of the hot slide and managed to maneuver his son into his lap, but didn’t realize the severity of his burns until the boy pointed them out to him. The skin on his hands had peeled off, and the flesh underneath was red and raw. Edwards got off the slide and flagged down another rider to help bring his son down, reports KUTV. The kind stranger delivered the severely injured boy to his waiting mother. The Texas father of two eventually made it down the slide on the defective sled, with third-degree burns all over his body. The hot metal cooked parts of his leg, elbow and almost 90 percent of his backside. Riders are told beforehand not to touch the hot slide, but aren’t informed that doing so could result in severe injuries. The family is now seeking to get the park to give more explicit warnings about the slide, especially as visitors are required to sign waivers assuming responsibility for any injury or death. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. JonBenet Ramsey case: New DNA testing planned after report revealed flaws - TomoNews

02:06
BOULDER, COLORADO — New DNA testing is planned in the investigation of the unsolved murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, who was found dead in 1996. An exclusive report revealed flaws in the interpretation of previous DNA testing. According to a joint report by Daily Camera and 9News, the DNA samples from JonBenet’s long johns belong to at least two people, in addition to herself. Also, the DNA profile gathered from JonBenet’s underwear could be a composite and not just from a single individual. The new findings make the link between the DNA found in the underwear and the long johns extremely weak, and could result in the DNA findings being considered evidence. Mary Lacy, the district attorney at the time, was given this analysis of the DNA. However, she concluded that the DNA found in JonBenet’s underwear and the DNA found in her long johns pointed to an unknown male. This conclusion exonerated the Ramsey family from suspicion in 2008. Lacy did not respond to requests for comment after the report revealed the DNA findings failed to support her decision to exonerate the Ramsey family. JonBenet was found murdered in the basement of the family house in Boulder, Colorado. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey said she realized her daughter was missing after finding a ransom letter on the kitchen staircase the morning after Christmas and quickly phoned the police. However, police did not find her body during the initial search of the house. It was her father, John Ramsey, who found JonBenet’s body in the wine cellar room in the basement that afternoon. JonBenet was duct taped over the month and her wrists were tied. A garrote was found around her neck and her skull was fractured due to a heavy blow. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Body cam: murder suspect is stopped by cop, pulls out knife and begs officer to kill him - TomoNews

02:25
CINCINNATI — Intense body cam footage from a police officer in Ohio has been released of a near-deadly incident that took place along Interstate 75 on March 29. The footage captures the moment a man reportedly wanted for homicide attempts to stab a cop, gets shot by the cop, and then begs the cop to finish him off. Javier Pablo Aleman was wanted in Baltimore after allegedly stabbing and killing his roommate, 51-year-old Victor Adolfo Serrano, on March 17. The cop wearing the bodycam sure doesn’t have a clue who he’s talking to, but he seems to know something’s not quite right. When questioned, Aleman tells the officer he just got off the bus from Dayton, Ohio, and is waiting for someone to come pick him up. Aleman says he has no ID on him. When asked for a name, the shady-looking character stutters, then says his name is Carlos. Officer Josh Hilling doesn’t quite buy it, and lets him know he’s going to have to subject him to a routine pat down, to make sure he’s got no weapons on him. Unfortunately, Aleman does indeed have a weapon on him, and decides to pull out an eight-inch knife. Aleman threatens Officer Hilling with the knife, apparently not very interested in getting busted. Reacting to the weapon, Officer Hilling shoots Aleman in the abdomen, but that doesn’t stop him. Brandishing the knife, Aleman repeatedly asks the cop to kill him. Officer Hilling instead continues to plead with him, asking Aleman to please drop the blade. Though faced with an aggressive crook wielding a deadly weapon, Hilling resists pulling the trigger again, hoping to calm the man down. Hilling’s backup finally arrives, and after several minutes of heated negotiations, Aleman gives himself up and allows the officers to arrest him. The incident took place on March 29, and Aleman has been in hospital recovering from his lone gunshot wound ever since. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chinese tourist behaving badly: woman’s rants at Chinese tourist in Thailand goes viral - TomoNews

04:40
PHUKET, THAILAND — This Beijing woman, known as “Sister Bin,” is perhaps fsat becoming the world’s favorite Chinese tourist. Why? Because she had the audacity to call out her greedy fellow Chinese tourists for trying to take home a piece of wood from Lover’s Beach in Phuket, Thailand. In the three-minute video that Sister Bin posted on her Weibo page, she described an incident in which a woman from Jiangsu tried to take a large piece of wood home from the beach, despite the fact that the tour guides had told her multiple times that she was not allowed to do so. Sister Bin told the audience that she took it upon herself to tell the tour guide to report the offending woman to customs. Sister Bin then went on cursing and swearing about how Chinese tourists often disrespect other countries’ laws and treat every place like their own homes. This made Sister Bin an instant internet celebrity, helping her amass almost 5,000 followers on Weibo and over 6,000 followers on Facebook. She also seems to be determined to continue her mission to monitor the behaviour of Chinese tourists around the world. Go Sister Bin! We support you! ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ocean cleaning machine: Australian surfers quit jobs, invent Seabin to clean up ocean - TomoNews

01:25
PERTH, AUSTRALIA — Two Australia surfers are gaining the attention from investors around the world for their invention of a device that helps clean the ocean, according to Australia's ABC News. ABC News reports that Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski, who are best friends, became frustrated over the amount of trash that was floating in the ocean. They decided to quit their jobs to come up with a sustainable solution to the problem of ocean pollution, and invented the Seabin. The Seabin is an automated rubbish bin designed to be mounted on marina docks to help clean the water. According to the duo's company website, the Seabin, which is built from recycled materials, is mounted to a dock and connected to water pump that is powered by an source on the shore. The pump pulls water through the Seabin, thus bringing all the floating rubbish and debris in the water into a natural fibre bag inside the device before water is pumped back out. The floating debris is captured inside the Seabin, and water flows out through the bottom of the bin and pulled up into the pump on the dock. There is also an option to attach an oil and water separating device to the water pump to clean the water before it is returned to the ocean. "It essentially works as a similar concept to a skimmer box from your pool filter. But it's designed on a scale to work and essentially attract all that rubbish within a location within a marine harbour," said Seabin spokesperson Richard Talmage, as quoted by ABC News. ABC News reports that the duo designed a prototype of the bin in Perth before taking it to market in Mallorca in Spain, a marina capital of Europe. A crowdfunding effort has already raised $50,000 for commercial production of the Seabin, and a video of the device has attracted more than 10 million hits online. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Laser propulsion: NASA's laser-powered spacecraft will fly to Mars in 72 hours - TomoNews

01:41
SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA — NASA scientist Philip Lubin is working on perfecting laser technology that could propel a light spacecraft to Mars in as little as three days. In order for spacecraft to achieve faster speeds, Lubin proposes using an electromagnetic propulsion system that uses light and radiation, rather than the current fuel-based rocket propulsion system. Photonic propulsion is a theoretical system that uses the energy and momentum from photons to move objects through space. According to Wired, when photons from a laser array reflect off an object, their energy is translated into a push that's capable of moving objects like a spacecraft. The system would currently work best with robotic spacecraft. According to Lubin, a robotic probe with a thin reflective sail could travel to Mars in three days. On the other hand, a manned shuttle could reach Mars in a month using the laser-based system. He estimates that lasers could accelerate spacecraft to 30 percent the speed of light, which was previously unheard of. Using photonic propulsion, interstellar travel may be possible and sending a probe to Earth's closest star, Alpha Centauri, could take as little as 15 years, reported Space.com. In comparison, our current technology takes four to eight months to get to Mars. It took 37 years for the Voyager 1 spacecraft to reach the edge of our solar system. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. AURORA, COLORADO — A letter from prosecutors revealed the details of an attack of an off-duty Colorado sheriff’s deputy in January, which ended with the deputy firing a ‘one in a billion’ shot. Off-duty deputy Jose Ramon Marquez was walking in an apartment complex parking lot in Aurora on the evening of January 26 when two men approached him. One of them suddenly pulled out a gun, and as Marquez also drew his weapon, the man opened fired 12 shots at him. Marquez returned fire four times, with one bullet hitting the suspect’s leg. Another bullet reportedly went directly into the barrel of the attacker’s gun, hit the cartridge and disabled the weapon. Marquez was badly wounded from the shooting, with bullets damaging his intestines, colon and liver. He is still recovering from the injuries. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Grizzly bear attack: Bear snaps hiker’s arm - he then walks 3 miles to his car - TomoNews

02:11
MADISON VALLEY, MONTANA — A grizzly bear attack in Bear Creek almost killed a man. Somehow, he miraculously survived, walked three miles and drove himself nearly 20 more miles to the nearest hospital. Todd Orr says he was walking along a hiking trail scouting for elk when he spotted a mother grizzly bear and her two cubs. When the mother charged at Todd, he tried hitting her with bear spray from 25 feet away, but she ran through the mist and took him to the ground. He tried to lay as motionless as possible while the bear had her way with him, biting him on the shoulders, arms and backpack. At some point she must’ve got bored and left, so Todd tried to get to his car. About 10 minutes later, the bear returned for another attack. This time, she bit him so hard on his forearm, it cracked the bone. Surprisingly, after a few more bites, the crazed sow gave pause and walked away. Stunned, Todd got up, thanked God and made a video of his account, which he later posted to Facebook. The video has accumulated more than 30 million views in less than two days. After driving himself 17 miles to the hospital, it took them eight hours to stitch Todd back together. Fortunately, he’s expected to make a full recovery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Boy, 13, has leg amputated after fight with teacher at school in Columbus, Georgia - TomoNews

01:30
COLUMBUS, GEORGIA — A 13-year-old boy is facing life with only one leg following an altercation with a teacher at school. The boy, identified as Montravious Thomas, was set to go under the knife on Tuesday after a month of treatment failed to save his right leg. Thomas was enrolled in an alternative school program for kids with behavioral issues at the Edgewood Student Services Center in Columbus, Georgia, when the incident that led to the amputation occurred on September 12. The boy was reportedly the only student in the class when he decided he wanted to call his mom to pick him up. However, behavioral specialist Bryant Mosley refused to let him go. The teacher then allegedly body-slammed the boy to the floor multiple times. Lawyers for Thomas said the boy suffered a broken leg, permanent nerve damage, and a damaged knee cap, the Ledger-Enquirer reported. The teacher then carried the boy to the school bus and sent him home without providing medical aid or telling his family. Adding insult to injury, Thomas’s mother Lawanda lost her temp job because she was spending time at her son’s side in the hospital. Lawyers for the Thomas family plan to file a lawsuit for an amount that’s yet to be determined. Moseley has not been charged with any crime related to the incident. The school has agreed to release more than 50 documents and any available video footage to the boy’s legal team. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Typhoon turbine: Japanese engineer develops wind turbine to harness power from typhoon - TomoNews

01:45
TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons. Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons. The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction. Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne. The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces. Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally. "Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.” According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. D.B. Cooper mystery: 45 years on, skyjacker who stole $200,000 remains an enigma - TomoNews

07:05
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — It’s almost 45 years since a hijacker known by the pseudonym “D.B. Cooper” jumped out of plane above America’s Pacific Northwest clutching a $200,000 cash ransom. More than four decades later, the crime has never been solved and the FBI stopped actively investigating the case in July. The legend of D.B. Cooper began at the Northwest Orient Airlines flight counter at Portland International Airport on Nov. 24, 1971, when a man identifying himself as “Dan Cooper” paid cash for a one-way ticket on Flight 305 to Seattle, a mere 30-minute journey. On board, Cooper showed a flight attendant an explosive device in his briefcase and demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck on standby at the airport in Seattle. The plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma Airport, where a bag filled with cash and parachutes was delivered, and Cooper released all 36 passengers, along with two flight attendants. The plane took off again, bound for Mexico City, scheduled to stop to refuel in Reno, Nevada. As Cooper sat alone in the cabin, crew members in the cockpit noticed a sudden upward tilt in the plane’s tail section, which required trimming to get the aircraft back to its flight level. Investigators believe this could be the moment D.B. Cooper made his exit by leaping into the freezing cold air, through the clouds, and to an unknown fate. In all the years that have followed, only two pieces of hard evidence have ever been found. In 1978, a hunter found the fragment of a placard for lowering the back stairs of a Boeing 727 along the flight path of the plane. Two years later, about 20 miles southwest of Ariel, Washington a boy discovered $5,800 in damaged cash from Cooper’s haul. The FBI has investigated more than a thousand suspects in the case, but has never been able to identify D.B. Cooper. The bureau officially ended active investigation of the case in July, citing a lack of new information. More than $194,000, the equivalent of more than a million dollars today, has never been recovered. The FBI suspects that D.B. Cooper didn’t survive the jump, but their guess about what really happened is as good as yours or mine. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

ISIS attack: Trapped Russian soldier calls airstrike on himself to kill ISIS fighters - TomoNews

01:27
PALMYRA, SYRIA — A transcript of the final communications between soldier Alexander Prokhorenko and Russian Special Forces has been released, detailing the final moments before his called in his own death, trapped in ISIS territory. Prokhorenko was stationed near Palmyra, Syria, in charge of directing airstrikes on ISIS targets. Alone, he suddenly realized he was dangerously low on ammunition and surrounded by terrorists, with no possible escape route. He radioed his commander to communicate his dire situation, and instructed him to go ahead with airstrikes, taking out ISIS jihadists along with his own life in the resulting attack. According to the transcript, Prokhorenko's words were "I am surrounded, they are outside, I don't want them to take me and parade me, conduct the airstrike, they will make a mockery of me and this uniform." His commander refused, ordering Prokhorenko to get to safety before any such command would be ordered. The brave Prokhorenko told him "I want to die with dignity and take all these bastards with me. Please, my last wish, conduct the airstrike, they will kill me either way." His commander acknowledged his plight, ordering in the airstrikes, and sealing Prokhorenko's fate. In his final transmission, he thanked his commander, said he had "the best wife in the world," and was serving the nation he loved. His wife, Ekaterina, was reportedly unaware that her husband was even serving in Syria. They'd been married only 18 months, and reports indicate they were expecting their first child. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Gorilla killed: Gorillas have a history of protecting kids who fall into zoo enclosures - TomoNews

02:03
CINCINNATI — The 4-year-old boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo isn’t the first child to find himself face to face with one of nature’s most powerful beasts. Harambe, a 17-year-old western lowland gorilla, was shot and killed on Saturday after dragging the boy around a moat because zookeepers feared for the child’s life. The incident sparked a public outcry and brought our relationship with these magnificent endangered creatures into focus. Critics who argue Harambe was in fact protecting the boy can point to two historical precedents to back up their claims, the New York Daily News reported. In 1986, 5-year-old boy Levan Merritt fell into the gorilla enclosure at Jersey Zoo in the U.K., breaking an arm and fracturing his skull, according to archive footage posted to YouTube. With the child lying unconscious, a male silverback named Jambo stood over the boy and protected him from other gorillas. Zookeepers and a paramedic then rescued the boy, and he was pulled out of the enclosure. In 1996, an unnamed 3-year-old boy fell nearly 20 feet into the gorilla enclosure at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. He was picked up by an 8-year-old female gorilla named Binti Jua, which had recently become a mother. Binti Jua carried the boy to a door in the enclosure and guarded him from other gorillas, helping paramedics to retrieve the child. The boy had a broken hand and cuts to his face, according to WGNTV While these stories have happy endings, the same can not be said for Harambe, as the uproar over the killing of the Cincinnati Zoo gorilla continues to be heard. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Smart Floating Farm: Forward Thinking Architecture’s invention could help feed the world - TomoNews

02:02
BARCELONA, SPAIN — A Barcelona-based company has developed a solar powered floating farm system that could ease growing food demand around the world. Smart Floating Farms, otherwise known as SFF, was developed by Forward Thinking Architecture. The idea was inspired by traditional grid-shape fish farms in Asia. The structure is 200 meters wide and 350 meters long, which is roughly the size of 6 football fields. They can be connected to form a cluster of modules. The floating farm has three levels: the top level is installed with photovoltaic panels to harvest sunlight for electricity and it has rainwater collectors for irrigation purposes; second level serves as a greenhouse for the vegetables, which are grown without soil under the hydroponic system; and the ground level is used as a fish farm on the open sea, as well as a fish egg hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a storage room for the fish. All the modules are centrally controlled by software via Cloud technology. The production data will be analysed and can be used to make comparisons on food needs for specific cities. Each SFF is estimated to have a maximum production of 8.152 tons of vegetables and 1.703 tons of fish per year. The floating farms are ideal for densely populated cities near coastal areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Grandma Wanda texts wrong number about Thanksgiving dinner and invites stranger anyway - TomoNews

01:42
PHOENIX, ARIZONA — As has happened to so many of us, 17-year-old Jamal Hinton was receiving text messages from a wrong number, but rather than just move on, he decided to make a connection instead, with the sweet grandmother who mis-dialed him. Earlier this week, Jamal found himself looped into a group chat, getting texts from an unknown number about Thanksgiving dinner. When he asked who it was, the person replied “Your grandma.” When he asked for a picture, the woman sent him a selfie of her, while she was at work. Jamal quickly realized it wasn’t his grandma, but decided to have some fun with the mix up, and sent her a selfie, too. He then took things a step further, boldly asking if he could still have a plate at her family Thanksgiving meal. In classic grandma style, she replied “Of course you can. That’s what grandma’s do … feed everyone.” The woman, Grandma Wanda, was actually trying to reach her grandson, Brandon. What ended up happened was Brandon, his girlfriend and Grandma Wanda having a conversation with Jamal about actually have him over for Thanksgiving dinner at their Arizona home. Jamal’s easily the coolest tag-along guest this year. Unfortunately for Grandma Wanda, when screenshots of the exchange began circulating on Twitter, her phone started blowing up with random requests for seats at the table, so she had to have her number changed. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Road rage incident turns into fist fight in Walmart parking lot - TomoNews

15:09
DENVER — Video footage captured a road rage confrontation that led to a fist fight outside a Walmart in Colorado on June 17. Devin Jones was reportedly riding his motorcycle through a neighborhood in Denver, when he noticed a white sedan speed by him. Jones decided to pursue the sedan, which sped through the streets, zipping around other vehicles and on wrong side of the road. Jones captured the entire incident on his helmet camera, writing that he wanted to follow the guy just to see his face. But, when the sedan’s driver outmaneuvered and out-crazied Jones, the motorcyclist abandoned his chase … or so he thought. After giving up, Jones decided to test out some tires in a dirt lot, and noticed the same speed devil pass by. He followed the vehicle into a Walmart parking lot. Jones confronted the driver, who had a female passenger in the vehicle, asking him why he was in such a hurry, to which the driver explained, “Yo momma f***ed me good.” After the two spent a few minutes exchanging insults, the driver began touching Jones’ motorcycle. When Jones asked him not to, the driver makes a point to touch the bike again. That’s when Jones made his own point by shoving the driver away. The two spar for a few minutes, with Jones getting in a few good punches and shoves before Walmart officials and passersby interrupt. “I should have left it alone but instead I confronted him and let anger make me look like a complete asshole,” Jones wrote about the incident. “I thought it was common knowledge not to hit a motorcycle in front of its lover... owner.” ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cambodia lost cities: Vast Khmer empire discovered hidden under the jungle - TomoNews

01:35
SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA — A vast network of previously undocumented medieval cities has been discovered near Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple. Researchers using LIDAR scanning technology found multiple cities beneath the jungle, the Guardian reported. The cities had complex urban landscapes and were linked by roads and canals. They range from 900 to 1,400 years old and would have been part of the largest empire on earth in the 12th century. LIDAR is a detection system similar to radar, which uses lasers instead of radio waves. It is used with GPS to produce 3D models and maps. Last year, a helicopter mounted with LIDAR technology scanned a 734-square-mile area near Angkor Wat, according to the Guardian. The data revealed the true scale of the lost city of Mahendraparvata, which was previously believed to be much smaller. In fact, Mahendraparvata was about the same size as Cambodia’s present capital Phnom Penh. The scans show the ancient cities had sophisticated water management systems built hundred of years before it was believed the technology existed, the Guardian reported. Geometric shapes thought to be gardens were also discovered. Historians told the Guardian the groundbreaking discovery would help us understand more about Angkorian civilization and the decline of the Khmer empire. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Man falls into Yellowstone hot springs, body dissolves in fatal ‘hot pot’ calamity - TomoNews

01:24
MAMMOTH, WYOMING — A 23-year-old man who died in Yellowstone National Park last summer was reportedly trying to find a place to soak in the area’s natural hot springs. Portland, Oregon graduate Colin Scott was killed on June 7 when his body dissolved in the boiling acidic waters of a hot spring in the Norris Geyser basin. Yellowstone officials released the final incident report following a Freedom of Information Act request by NBC affiliate KULR. Scott’s sister Sable filmed the whole thing on her cellphone, according to the report, but the video has not been released to the public. An official said there are signs in the park that warn visitors not to fool around with its natural geothermal features. But the Scott siblings were allegedly trying to do just that, by looking for a place to take a dangerous dip, known as a “hot pot.” Sable Scott filmed on her cellphone as her brother checked the water temperature, only to slip and fall into the churning hot spring. Although rescue workers found Colin’s body, their efforts were disrupted by a lightning storm, and by the time they got back to the hot spring, the body had dissolved in the water. No citations were issued in connection with the incident. Hot spring-related injuries have claimed at least 22 lives in and around Yellowstone since 1890, the Washington Post reported, citing park officials. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Boeing 787 Dreamliner: Secret rest cabin for pilots and flight attendants revealed - TomoNews

01:41
CHICAGO — The secret compartments where cabin crew rest on board long-haul flights have been revealed in photos online. Photographs of secret rest cabins for pilots and flight attendants on Boeing’s flagship 787 Dreamliner were published by Australian website News.com.au. On a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the pilot’s rest cabin is usually positioned behind the cockpit and above the first class compartment. The stairway is disguised behind a security-coded door. The cabin usually has one business class seat and two bunk beds, separated by thick curtains to give the pilots a small amount of privacy. The rest cabin for flight attendants is usually located at the rear of the plane, just above the economy passenger compartment. Depending on the design of each plane, a compartment can usually accommodate at least five flight attendants. Even though some crew members complain that it feels like sleeping in a coffin, posters commenting on the story on Twitter wondered if similar rest cabins could be designed for passengers too. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Student spends $4.6m mistakenly given by bank in Australia, gets arrested while fleeing - TomoNews

01:24
SYDNEY — Malaysia national Christine Jiaxin Lee, 21, has been arrested for spending millions of Australian dollars that were mistakenly given to her by her bank in Australia four years ago. Lee, a chemical engineering student in Sydney, was only 17 when the Westpac Bank accidently gave her an overdraft limit amounting to A$4.6 million. She kept the mistake to herself and spent A$3.3 million on handbags and other luxury items, as well as making cash transfers, in less than a year. She also rented a penthouse apartment with Sydney Harbour Bridge views in Rhodes, for A$3120 a month. Lee planned her exit strategy when police tried to contact her about the money. She somehow obtained an emergency Malaysian passport in order to allegedly sneak out of the country. However, Lee was arrested just before boarding her flight to Malaysia at Sydney Airport on Wednesday night on the charges of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime. Magistrate Lisa Stapleton granted Lee bail on Thursday and said Lee was not involved in the proceeds of crime, but "it's money we all dream of", adding that Lee may not have actually broken the law. Lee had to surrender her passport and now has to live with her boyfriend, who claimed that he had no knowledge of the money Lee had spent. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cryonics gives the terminally ill hope of a second chance at life - TomoNews

02:25
CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN — A landmark British court ruling that a 14-year-old girl who died of cancer should have her body cryogenically frozen has once again put the spotlight on the controversial process known as cryonics. Britain’s High Court ruled in October that the girl had the right to be cryogenically frozen after her parents disagreed about whether she should undergo the process, the Telegraph reported. Cryonics is a procedure that preserves the human body at low temperatures after death in the hope it can be revived in the future. The process must begin within two minutes of a person being declared legally dead. Although the heart has stopped beating, there is still some brain function during this period, so a heart-lung resuscitator is used to stabilize the body and keep the brain supplied with blood and oxygen. An anticoagulant is injected into the body to stop the blood clotting during transit. The body is then packed in ice and transported to a cryonics facility. Once there, a process called vitrification begins, where the blood is replaced with a cryoprotectant antifreeze fluid. This is done to prevent the cells from freezing and to stop ice crystals from forming around the organs at extremely low temperatures. The body is then placed on a bed of dry ice until it cools to -130 degrees Celsius. Once cooled sufficiently, the body is transferred to an individual container, which is in turn lowered into a larger metal tank that’s filled with liquid nitrogen to keep the temperature at -196 degrees Celsius. Between four and six bodies are typically held in the tanks. Bodies are stored with the heads facing down to ensure the brain stays immersed in freezing liquid even in the event of a leak in the container. Approval to build a cryonics center in Australia was granted in late November. Russia is currently the only country outside the United States to host cryonics facilities. Around 350 people have been cryogenically frozen since the 1960s, including several notable scientists and the baseball legend Ted Williams, according to the Telegraph. However, the technology to revive someone who has been cryogenically frozen does not exist and there is no proof that it ever will. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Florida sinkhole reveals that we've been wrong about when the first Americans arrived - TomoNews

02:04
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — A collection of fossils and artifacts retrieved from a sinkhole in a river on Florida's Gulf Coast may provide some of the oldest evidence of human presence in North America. The Page-Ladson archaeological site, submerged 35 feet under Florida's Aucilla River, was the site of several digs in the 1980s and 1990s. A new team that included researchers from Florida State University and Texas A&M University decided to follow up on decades-old research between 2012 and 2014. After more than a hundred dives into the sinkhole, the team published their findings last week in the journal Science Advances. The researchers discovered mastodon bones, fossilized dung and stone tools in the sinkhole that provide compelling evidence that humans spread across North America far earlier than archaeologists previously thought. According to their research paper, the stone tools recovered from the sinkhole include a biface, a stone that's been manually sharpened on both ends. On a previous excavation at the site, archaeologists found an adult mastodon tusk that appeared to have human-made grooves along its surface, reported the Christian Science Monitor. Prehistoric humans called the Clovis culture were believed to have originally arrived in North America via a land bridge about 13,000 years ago — as mammoth bones and spearheads have revealed. However, according to the Guardian, some of the artifacts recently discovered within the Aucilla River date back to more than 14,550 years ago when the land bridge may not have existed. What these new discoveries suggest is that a land bridge from Siberia may not be the answer to how the first humans initially colonized North America. Moreover, evidence suggests that people were in North America before the Clovis. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Space elevator would climb incredible 20-kilometer tower in ambitious Canadian plan

01:42
PEMBROKE, ONTARIO, CANADA — A Canadian space company wants to build a space elevator that reaches 20 kilometers high. The company is called Thoth and the concept is called the Thoth X tower. The idea is to build a tower with reinforced inflatable sections. The middle is hollow. An elevator car would encircle the tower until it reaches the top. Thoth estimates the tower would cost $5 billion to construct. As a demonstration project, it would build a precursor tower measuring 1.5 kilometers tall. One feature of the project is the wind farm about three quarters of the way up. The 50 turbines could produce 1 gigawatt of continuous energy. That’s enough to power about 700,000 homes. The main purpose of the tower is to provide a take-off and landing platform for spacecraft. If your aircraft takes off at a 20 kilometer altitude, you can get to space in a single stage without the need for additional fuel stages. Thoth estimates this would save 30% on energy costs. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Solar panel windows: coating of quantum dots on windows harvest energy from the sun - TomoNews

01:37
LOS ALAMOS, NEW MEXICO — Researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have developed a film of quantum dots that can turn windows into photovoltaic systems. Quantum dots can be used as semiconductors. According to IEEE Spectrum, they consist of a CdSe inner core, a Cd1−xZnxS outer shell and a silica coating that prevents them from oxidation. The quantum dots are spead into a thin sheet that can be placed onto a glass window pane. When photons from sunlight hit a quantum dot, it sends the electron in the valence band into the conduction band, leaving a hole behind. When the electron recombines with the hole in the valence band, a new photon with lower energy is generated. This new photon propagates within the glass via internal reflections. Energy is then generated when the propagating photons reach the window frame, where solar cells are stored. The coating of quantum dots can be used on any window and to turn it into a sunlight harvesters at costs lower than are currently available. The study was published in Nature Energy on Oct 10. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. European Space Agency’s Rosetta probe locates and photographs missing Philae lander - TomoNews

01:43
COMET 67P — Less than one month before the end of its mission, the Rosetta probe has made a yet another discovery: the location of its sister, the Philae comet lander. Rosetta has had quite the time in space. The probe has been surveying Comet 67P — also known as Churyumov-Gerasimenko. In 2011, Rosetta was placed in hibernation mode for 31 months to conserve energy and traveled to the most distant part of its journey. In November 2014, it released Philae, which landed on the comet, the first time a spacecraft has ever done so. However, Philae bounced during its landing and was only in operation for a short time before it powered down. Experts have unable to locate the lander since. Currently, Rosetta is nearing the orbit of Jupiter, which means it’s running short on solar power and bandwidth required to downlink necessary data. At the moment, the probe is gathering as much data about the comet as possible. It recently found the amino acid glycine, a crucial building block of life, in the dust surrounding the comet. And in about a month’s time, Rosetta will crash into the comet, ending its mission. Before doing so, Rosetta has given researchers one last gift. The probe captured images of the Philae lander, or at least, what’s left of it, on its high-resolution camera. Images showed the lander with two of its three legs, trapped in a dark crack on the comet where it was unable to absorb sunlight and recharge. This explains why the lander powered down after only three days of activity. After going into hibernation, the lander powered up again and attempted communication with the ESA in June and July 2015 when the comet came closer to the sun. It’s a bittersweet discovery, but at least Philae’s fate will no longer be a mystery. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Future green technology: new solar panels could generate electricity from raindrops - TomoNews

01:28
YUNNAN, CHINA — Scientists in China are producing solar panels that can produce energy from the last source you'd expect — rainwater. In a study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, researchers in China introduced a new type of solar panel that adds a layer of graphene, or carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure, to dye-sensitized solar cells. A flexible layer of indium tin oxide and plastic is included underneath. Graphene has unusual properties that allow electrons to move freely throughout the entire layer. According to the researchers, rainwater contains positively charged ions like ammonium, calcium and sodium. When water binds to the panel's surface, a double-layer of positive ions and negatively charged electrons is created, which ends up producing a voltage and current. Tests of the new solar panels have been able to produce hundreds of microvolts, which is small even compared to a standard AA battery, reports Quartz. The solar-to-electric energy conversion stood at about 7 percent, which is much lower than the 20 percent energy conversion achieved by the best solar panels on the market. So there's a long way to go before the new solar panels become more widely used. But more efficient future versions could mean big things for the solar industry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Racism at Chili’s: Black veteran has free meal revoked after Trump supporter complaint - TomoNews

03:05
CEDAR HILL, TEXAS — A military veteran taking advantage of a complimentary meal at a Chili’s in North Texas had his food taken away after his service was called into question by a fellow customer. Ernest Walker proudly served in 25th Infantry of the U.S. Army, Division Tropic Lightning. On November 11, the army vet was waiting for his food with his service dog, Barack. The restaurant offers all active service members and veterans a free meal on Veterans Day as a thank you. The meal took half an hour to be served, and as Walker had to go, he asked the waitress to put it in a to-go box for him. As he was waiting for his doggy bag, he says an elderly man wearing a Trump t-shirt walked over and questioned him about his time in the military. The man, who himself claimed to be a World War 2 vet serving in Germany, didn’t believe Walker was actually a veteran. A few minutes later, the manager came over and told Walker another guest said he wasn’t a veteran because he was wearing his hat indoors. After providing his discharge papers and his military ID, the manager then told him the guest also said his dog was not a service dog. That’s when Walker started recording the incident on his smartphone. After arguing for the duration of the video, the manager took Walker’s to-go box away and told him to “have a great day.” Following the unfortunate exchange, Walker posted the video to Facebook, and the story has since gotten back to Chili’s, who have responded saying the situation has been escalated to the highest levels of the company. So far, Walker hasn’t yet been contacted by anyone at Chili’s or its ownership group, but the two sides are expected to meet this week. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. How do U.S. primaries and caucuses work? - TomoNews

01:53
Before a U.S. presidential election can take place, the Democratic and Republican parties need to choose a nominee. They do this by holding a series of smaller elections at the state level, which are called primaries and caucuses. In these mini elections, voters don't directly choose the presidential candidate they support. Rather, they are voting for delegates who will represent their choice at each party’s national convention later in the year. Most states hold primaries, whereby citizens go into voting booths to cast a ballot for their preferred candidate. Most of these primaries are 'closed' primaries, meaning you can’t vote unless you are officially registered with the party. But some states allow semi-closed primaries, which allows independent voters to participate, although they can participate in the primary of only one party. And some states will allow open primaries, where anyone, regardless of their official political affiliation, is allowed to vote. A caucus is very different from a primary. It's a public voting process, where people gather and physically stand with those who support the same delegate they do. At the end of the caucus, the number of people in each group are counted, and the delegate with the bigger group supporting him or her wins. The more citizens who live in a state, the more delegates that state can send to the national convention. And at the national convention, the candidate who wins more than half of the delegates’ votes wins the presidential nomination for the party. Primaries and caucuses aren’t conducted all at once. They are spread out over a year. Traditionally, Iowa always holds the first caucus, and New Hampshire holds the first primary. However, many states will decide to hold their caucuses and primaries all on the same day. This day has come to be known as Super Tuesday. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Pregnant mother suffers second degree burn after falling asleep on her iPhone 7 - TomoNews

01:22
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — A pregnant woman in Australia posted a shocking image on Facebook showing the second degree burn she sustained after falling asleep with her charging iPhone 7. 34-year- old Sydney resident Melanie Tan Pelaez was watching movies on her iPhone 7 while it was being charged on Tuesday night, then she fell asleep, news.com.au reported. The next morning when Pelaez wakes up, she feels pain, pins and needles down her arm, realising she’d been left with an mark of the phone and charger etched into her arm. Pelaez visited a general practitioner and a hospital, they matched the markings on her arm to the phone and the charger. Pelaez took the phone to an Apple store. The staff said it wasn’t the phone’s fault since it supposed to shut off if it overheats. And it didn’t smell like an overheated iPhone. After meeting with the doctors, Pelaez wanted to share her awful experience on Facebook and is afraid the same might happen to someone else. Pelaez told news.com.au that Apple tried to give her a new iPhone 7, but she declined as she has lost her faith in the tech giant’s smartphone. Various media have already contacted Apple for comment, Apple said they are now working with Pelaez to investigate the incident. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Two cave divers die in underwater Florida labyrinth known as ‘Mount Everest of diving’ - TomoNews

01:29
WEEKI WACHEE, FLORIDA — Two divers died exploring an underwater cave system in Florida known to be one of the world’s most beautiful, but also most dangerous diving sites. The bodies of Patrick Peacock, 53, and Chris Rittenmeyer, 38, were found by rescue divers in the Eagle’s Nest cave system on Monday, NBC affiliate WFLA reported. Eagle’s Nest is also known as the Lost Sink. Divers access the underwater caves through a pond in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge. Among divers, the caves are considered the Mount Everest or Grand Canyon of diving sites for their stunning views and extreme depths. The treacherous tunnels contain around a mile of passages, some of them more than 300 feet deep. Peacock and Rittenmeyer explored deep into the caves on Sunday, while a third diver, Justin Blakely, stayed nearer the surface. Blakely raised the alarm when his two friends failed to show up on time at their meeting point. The two dead divers were found in a complex and dangerous part of the cave system, according to deputies. They are the ninth and tenth divers to die at Eagle’s Nest since 1981. Both men were experienced cave divers and had explored the site before. Florida man Chester Spivey, whose son and grandson died at Eagle’s Nest on Christmas Day 2013, renewed calls for the site to be closed in the wake of Peacock and Rittenmeyer’s deaths. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. New York to grow 50,000 oysters on recycled toilets to clean up polluted Jamaica Bay - TomoNews

01:42
NEW YORK — New York has teamed up with the Billion Oyster Project to embed 50,000 oysters in Jamaica Bay with the use of recycled toilets. The New York/New Jersey Harbor Estuary was once filled with oysters, but due to over harvesting, dredging and pollution, the bivalves died out in the area. Oysters are considered keystone species. A single oyster can filter as much as 50 gallons of water a day, removing chemicals and other pollutants. And oyster reefs stabilize shorelines, prevent erosion and act as a buffer against hurricanes and tropical storms. New York City and the Billion Oyster project will build one central donor oyster bed with 50,000 adult and spat-on-shell oysters, along with four receiver beds. Oysters normally embed themselves on old shells. With oysters extinct in the harbor for sometime, officials are utilizing a mixture of introduced oyster and clam shells along with old toilets, broken into small pieces, to help create a foundation on which new oysters will cling — at least for the four smaller beds. Once the oyster installation is complete, water quality will be monitored for future improvements. The beds will also be evaluated for the recruitment of new oysters. The project is being funded with a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Interior, administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection is contributing $375,000. The Billion Oyster Project and students from the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School are assisting with the installation and monitoring of the oyster beds. The project is coordinated by the New York Harbor School and aims to restore one billion live oysters to New York harbor by 2030. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. What is Trident? The British Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet explained - TomoNews

01:37
LONDON — British politicians this week voted to continue with the country’s nuclear submarine fleet. British Parliament voted 427 to 117 on Monday to renew the UK’s fleet of Trident submarines, the country’s sole nuclear weapons system. One of Britain’s four Vanguard-class submarines constantly patrols the the world’s oceans. According to the Guardian, the vessels are virtually undetectable because they use a nuclear powered reactor. The submarines can be armed with up to 40 nuclear warheads, host 132 crew and numerous torpedoes. Each measures around 150 meters in length. Nuclear missiles in Trident submarines have a range of up to 7,500 miles, potentially allowing the UK to strike most of the world. The fleet operates out of the Faslane Naval Base in Scotland, with one submarine always on patrol around the world. The British government estimates the cost of Trident to be around $40 billion dollars, Reuters reported. However some say that could rise to more than $200 billion over the project’s lifetime. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Girl, 13, designs smart bandage that tells you when to change, wins Google Science prize

01:45
BEAVERTON, OREGON — A smart bandage that detects moisture levels and signals when it needs to be changed has helped a seventh grade student impress the judges at the Google Science Fair. Anushka Naiknaware, 13, is a student at Stoller Middle School in Beaverton, Oregon. Her invention finished in the top eight at the competition, according to the event’s official website. Naiknaware won a $15,000 scholarship and a free trip to Lego headquarters in Denmark, with a year of entrepreneurship mentoring from a Lego executive. The bandage uses biopolymer chitosan with carbon nanoparticles to reduce bleeding and measure moisture levels in the wound. A battery and bluetooth chip sit on top of the bandage and are covered by a regular bandage adhesive layer. When the moisture level is high, the electrons inside the bandage experience less resistance; when the bandage dries up, the electrons detect much higher resistance. The change in resistance is noted and can be wirelessly transmitted to a mobile device, which then prompts the user to change bandages. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sleeping pods in airports and elsewhere allow you to get some shut eye in public - TomoNews

01:38
ABU DHABI — Sleeping pods placed in convenient locations allow people to get some desperately needed shut eye in public. Google may have popularized the concept of having sleeping pods in the workplace, but they're not the only company that uses them. Way back in 2012 with the London Olympics then approaching, one English company anticipated heavy traffic that would affect employees' commutes. So the company built sleeping pods that allowed employees to sleep in the office with privacy, reported Wired Magazine. These sleeping pods included a single mattress, while more advanced models also featured a stereo and a mirror. And now people can also choose to sleep with some privacy (and dignity) at airports instead of sprawling across several seats in front of gawking onlookers. Abu Dhabi International Airport was the first airport in the world to offer sleeping pods in 2013, although the service has since extended to many other airports worldwide — from Dallas-Fort Worth to London Gatwick. Abu Dhabi's GoSleep sleeping pods allow users to lie completely flat. Each pod is able to partly or fully block out sounds in the busy airport, depending on the user's preference. According to the airport's website, later stage pods offer wifi access, power sockets for charging electronic devices and space to store luggage under the cushion. The GoSleep sleeping pods can be rented out for about US $12 an hour — or about the price of three coffees. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. ATM skimming: How to spot an ATM skimmer - TomoNews

01:35
NEW YORK — This animation explains the practice of automatic teller machine (ATM) skimming, a common form of fraud that involves a compromised ATM that allows criminals to access bank accounts. According a survey published in April 2016, such incidents increased 546% from 2014 to 2015 in the United States. The data came from financial analytics company FICO and FICO Card Alert Service software, which also states that 60% of the incidents took place at non-bank ATMs. ATM skimming usually employs two separate components. First, a fake card reader is fitted onto the ATM’s card slot. It scans and stores the information on the card’s magnetic strip as it slides through. Then, a pinhole camera hidden on or near the ATM records the PIN entered on the keypad. Alternatively, a fake keypad is placed on top of the real one to record the digits entered. To avoid becoming victim to skimming fraud, one must check for any objects mounted on the ATM or near it. Comparing the ATM being used to another nearby can help spot suspicious differences. Examine any mounted parts by pulling them to see whether they are securely attached. Feel the keypad for its sensitivity and check whether it was placed on top of a real one. The research also reports that 60% of incidents took place at non-bank ATMs. You might want to avoid using ATMs in malls, for instance, and stick with those located outside or inside your bank. According to PCMag, one should examine any mounted parts by pulling them to see if they are securely attached. Also, try to feel the keypad for its sensitivity and check if it was placed on top of a real one. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Homeless in LA: Homeless man living in personal paradise in LA freeway underpass - TomoNews

01:30
LOS ANGELES — A homeless fella turned his lemons into more than just lemonade, as he transformed a dinky freeway underpass into opulent digs he’s proud to call home. Ceola Waddell, 59, didn’t want to spend his nights in a cardboard box, when he could live nicely like everybody else, the Los Angeles Times reported. Waddell’s underpass crib has all the furnishings: a four-poster bed and couch decked out in animal print, porcelain toilet, a makeshift Jacuzzi, and more. It’s even big enough to fit extras, including a tent that’s rented out to other homeless people for $25 a week. A video tour of the eye-popping accommodation eventually made it to Facebook, where it’s been viewed more than 1.4 million times. As a result, Waddell now has fans who trek to his underpass compound, which he calls Paradise Lane, to get a good look and take photos with him. But not everyone is happy about the lavish crib. City sanitation crews have dismantled the makeshift abode twice. Each time, Waddell scavenged neighborhoods for useful junk and rebuilt his setup. Homelessness remains a growing issue in LA, with numerous encampments around the city. Officials struggle to get people off the streets and into temporary housing, while figuring out a permanent solution for the problem. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kickboxing gone wrong: Man’s leg bends wrong way during Muay Thai training session - TomoNews

01:03
TORONTO — Video footage of a kickboxing demonstration shows a man’s leg bending in the wrong direction after a kick from the instructor pops his knee out of joint. The video was reportedly taken in 2012 but was only recently uploaded to YouTube. The video, supposedly taken at a Muay Thai class, show two men at a practice session when the teacher delivers a low kick on a student during a training session. However, the demonstration goes terribly wrong when this causes the student’s knee to pop out of joint, forcing his lower leg to bend in the wrong direction. The student is clearly in pain as he tries to sit down, but is unable to because of his awkwardly bent leg beneath him. Instead of cries of horror, people behind the camera can be heard laughing as the teacher quickly positions himself on the other side of the student to deliver another swift kick that pops the student’s leg back into place. Surprisingly, the student seems to think the entire ordeal is pretty funny too and is seen in the video laughing along with the rest of the bystanders. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Caught cheating in sports: Belgian pro-cyclist found using bicycle with hidden motor - TomoNews

01:50
ZOLDER, BELGIUM — The Union Cycliste Internationale has confirmed this week that the bicycle used by Belgian 19-year-old pro-cyclist Femke Van den Driessche during the world championship in Belgium contained a hidden motor. Driessche says she never cheated, and that the bike in question belongs to a friend. Driessche explained to Belgian media that the bicycle was given to her in error by a mechanic prior to the weekend under-23 race at the World Cyclo-Cross championship in Solder, Belgium, reported Cycling News. Driesseche pulled out of the race due to a "mechanical problem", reported ABC. The motor was found during an inspection. A motor such as the Vivax Assist, can be installed in the seat tube in a bicycle frame, reported Cycling Tips. Hidden motors can be powered by a battery, placed either inside the bicycle frame, in a saddlebag under the seat, or in a faux water bottle. The devices can be operated in a number of ways. According to Gizmodo, a sensor installed close to the pedals and connected to the motor detects the cyclist's pace. At higher speeds, the motor runs faster, helping the rider move quicker. Another way to use the motor is by pressing a switch or lever on the handlebars. Cycling competition regulators can detect motors by using a computer that reads radio frequencies emitted by the devices, or with the use of X-ray machines similar to the ones found in airports. The practice, also known as "mechanical doping," can lead to a heavy fines as well as long bans for offenders. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Largest indoor vertical farm uses 95 percent less water and produces more per square feet -TomoNews

02:17
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY — The world’s largest indoor vertical farm is well on its way to producing millions of pounds of food a year while using less water. Last December, AeroFarms Inc. secured $20 million in a Series B round of venture funding, paving the way for its 70,000 square foot facility in Newark, New Jersey, which the company says has the potential to produce 2 million pounds of food a year. Ground was broken on the facility last year and it is now nearing completion. It houses an efficient “aeroponic vertical farm” system that uses 95 percent less water than conventional commercial field farms and 40 percent less than hydroponic farms. The farm uses no sunlight or soil. Instead, the plants are housed on shelves and sprout out of a cloth medium made of post-consumer, recycled plastic. Each cloth takes 24 plastic water bottles out of the waste stream. An aeroponic system mists the plant roots with water, nutrients and oxygen. The closed system allows the farm to use less water. An LED lighting system is programmed to create a specific light recipe for each plant, giving the greens the exact spectrum, intensity and frequency they need for photosynthesis in the most energy-efficient way possible. The programmed lights also allow farmers to control the size, shape, texture, color, flavor and nutritional content of the foods produced. The cloth medium separates the plants from the nutrient-rich mists, allowing for fresh, clean and dry produce to be harvested. Once harvested, the cloth medium can be fully sanitized and reused on new crops. Utilizing the aeroponic and LED systems, the scientific farmers can monitor all the macro- and micronutrients of each plant, allowing AeroFarms to grow a plant in half the time of a commercial farm and with more productivity per square foot. They also tweak and track changes to allow for further improvements to the system. Currently, AeroFarms has two facilities with the larger 70,000 square foot building nearing completion. The AeroFarm system is also customizable. AeroFarms aims to have 25 facilities around the world in five years. The company hopes to build farms in different sizes and configurations to grow food in varied locations with the most efficient yield per square foot, no matter the space. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Diego the 100-year-old tortoise mates like crazy, sires 800 babies and saves his species - TomoNews

01:21
GALÁPAGOS, ECUADOR — A 100-year-old giant tortoise is being credited for singlehandedly reviving his species from impending extinction. In 1976, Diego, a Chelonoidis hoodensis tortoise, was brought over from the San Diego Zoo to Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos for a single purpose — repopulate his dwindling species. Along with six females on the island, Diego spent decades copulating, and today his genes can be traced to almost 40% of the current population in the wild. A study conducted by tortoise preservationists found that of the roughly 2000 tortoises on the island, Diego has fathered about 800 babies. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Open carry stand off: Gun owner stares down three cops in Connecticut Subway store - TomoNews

02:53
BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT — An open-carry gun owner who recorded video of police confronting him inside a Connecticut Subway store on Tuesday later posted the clip online in an incident that is sure to spark debate. The video opens with the gun owner being repeatedly asked by one officer to show his permit. The gun owner politely declines each request, saying he is acting in accordance with the law, while insisting he only wants to buy a sandwich. Eventually, the officer's superior enters the restaurant and tells the man they have received a complaint. While they continue to argue the technicalities of the state's gun laws a third officer arrives on the scene. The store owner then tells the gun owner he is refusing to serve the man, who reluctantly leaves the store. He then tells the officers he is going to Dunkin Donuts before calling them "dickheads." A second video posted to LiveLeak shows the gun owner and the third policemen arguing in a different location. During the conversation, the police officer admits that although he cannot order him to put his gun away and cannot order him to present your permit, but a business owner who is uncomfortable with him being in the store has the option to refuse his business. The gun owner then accuses the cop of harassing people for not breaking the law and asks him to go and find some real criminals. According to an article in the New Haven Register it is legal to carry a firearm in public view in Connecticut, although with a few caveats. In the article state police Lt. J. Paul Vance says, "If you have a permit to carry, you can carry a handgun on your person as long as it doesn't cause annoyance or alarm." While state police training bulletin no. 2013-01 says there is no statute which makes it illegal for someone with a valid pistol permit to openly carry unless it creates a 'breach of peace.' Local open carry advocates, meanwhile, dispute the definition of a 'breach of peace,' saying people 'feeling uncomfortable' doesn't qualify. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Dad shoots, kills son in basement after mistaking him for intruder - TomoNews

01:25
CINCINNATI — A father accidentally shot and killed his 14-year-old son, mistaking him for an intruder in the early morning hours of Jan. 12. According to Cincinnati police, Georta Mack told his father he was going to school and walked down the street of their home, located in the 1200 block of Blanchard Avenue in East Price Hill around 6:30 a.m. Shortly after, Georta decided to skip class and returned home. He snuck into the basement, where he planned to hide until his father went to work. Hearing noises in the house, his father went downstairs with a handgun, anticipating an intruder. Upon entering the basement, the man immediately fired his gun at the intruder, but quickly realized it was Georta. After shooting his sun in the neck, the man called 911, and Georta was rushed to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. At around 8:15 a.m., he was pronounced dead. The father is now being interviewed by police. It is unclear whether or not he will be charged, although authorities suspect it was an accident. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Airports of 2040: This is what airports of the future might look like - TomoNews

01:42
LONDON — A U.K. company has released a concept of what airports might be like by the year 2040, and they may be a lot more efficient and passenger-friendly than the ones now. According to the company, passengers will be expected to check-in via self-service desks, which include biometric scanners that can scan passengers’ facial features, iris patterns and fingerprints in order to verify their identities. After check in, a biometric token will be issued and stored in the passenger's smartphone that serves as a boarding pass and ID. Luggage can be dropped at drop-off points. Laser molecular body scanners can detect even tiny-quantities of dangerous materials in passengers’ clothing or their luggage without the need for a body search. Passengers may buy duty-free goods from virtual shopping stations and have the goods delivered to their homes. However, passengers can still get help from virtual assistants when the airport enters self-service phase. Airport control is likely to be operated remotely outside the airport, with staff monitoring live video footage of the airport, similar to the system introduced Sweden. Other technologies, such as biometric scanners, are currently being trialled at Heathrow and Schiphol airports. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Loyal dog: Marathon runner reunited with adorable dog who ran the Gobi Desert with him - TomoNews

01:37
URUMQI, CHINA — In a story that could have ended in tragedy, it was a miracle that helped a marathoner reunite with his lost dog in a city of more than 3 million people. Dion Leonard was running a marathon in the Gobi Desert in March when a little brown pup sidled up to him, according to an article written by race organizers. For the entire 250-kilometer run across difficult terrain, the dog kept up with him and never left. Leonard called the pup Gobi, and decided to bring her home to Edinburgh with him. While leaving China and entrusting Gobi with a friend after the race, he began the long and expensive process of taking her home, creating a crowdfunding page to help raise money. But on Aug. 6, while waiting to be transferred to Beijing for the quarantine process, Gobi went missing. Leonard flew in from Edinburgh and looked for Gobi all over Urumqi, but for days he failed to find a solid lead. Finally, a man called in to say he had seen posters of Gobi and found a dog at the park matching her exact description. When Leonard arrived at the man’s house, Gobi ran out and jumped all over him. Netizens in China and abroad were quick to offer well-wishes for the newly reunited couple, with additional calls for airlines to fly the duo home, reports the BBC. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Wife crushes man’s testicles: Man dies after 5 minutes of ball-crushing agony - TomoNews

01:15
TIEN GIANG, VIETNAM — A Vietnamese man died of suffocation after an altercation with his wife during which she reportedly crushed his testicles. On July 10, Le Kim Khai came to the home of his separated wife, 55-year-old Phan Thi Kim Chuong, to find her and one of their two daughters refusing to let him in. Khai found a hand saw and used it to cut open the door lock and break in. Once inside the husband and wife began violently fighting. Khai began punching his wife repeatedly despite his daughter’s pleas for him to stop. Chuong eventually grabbed Khai’s testicles and wrestled him to the floor, climbing and sitting on his stomach. Never loosening her vice grip, Chuong called the police. For five minutes, Chuong crushed the man’s balls until neighbors arrived and convinced her to stop. It was too late; Khai had lost consciousness and when en route to the hospital his face had turned purple. An autopsy revealed food stuck in the man’s windpipe. His official cause of death was suffocation. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Mars mission: astronauts might deep sleep their way to Mars in hibernation chambers - TomoNews

01:30
WASHINGTON DC — Astronauts might one day sleep their way to Mars by spending much of the long, arduous journey in hypothermic hibernation chambers. The trip from Earth to Mars takes approximately 200 days, one way. This presents several challenges. First, the long trip could take a psychological toll on astronauts. Second, life support systems (think living quarters, food galleries, etc.) for a round-trip journey lasting more than a year would significantly add to payload requirements. Having astronauts sleep much of the way could address both these challenges. NASA is funding research into the idea through its NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program. Last week, NASA awarded $500,000 in second-stage funding to Atlanta-based SpaceWorks Enterprises. SpaceWorks has drawn up ideas for a hibernation chamber, which it says would help reduce an astronaut's "footprint" aboard a spacecraft to Mars. The chamber's intranasal cooling system would lower the astronaut's temperature by 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, significantly reducing metabolism. This is known as a "torpor-induced state using therapeutic hypothermia," a procedure developed by medical doctors for the treatment of patients. While asleep, an astronaut would be fed via catheters attached to the thigh or chest, while another tube carries waste away. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation might be used to stave off muscle atrophy. As the astronauts approach Mars, the wake-up cycle begins. Warming pads slowly raise the body's temperature. It takes roughly one hour for every 1 degree rise in body temperature. Fully awake after their long nap, the astronauts are ready to begin their Mars mission. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Takata airbag recall: Texas teen killed by shrapnel is 10th US exploding air bag victim - TomoNews

01:35
WASHINGTON — The death of a teenaged Texas driver last week is the 10th linked to defective Takata air bags in the United States, regulators and automaker Honda confirmed on Wednesday. Exploding Takata air bags have prompted the recall of tens of millions of vehicles worldwide, Reuters reported. The latest U.S. victim was 17-year-old Huma Hanif, who died on March 31 when her 2002 Honda Civic rear-ended a Honda CR-V in Fort Bend County. High school senior Hanif was not speeding and was wearing a seatbelt during the crash, so she should have walked away alive, investigators told Reuters. However, she was killed when shrapnel punctured her air bag and sliced through an artery in her neck. The use of ammonium nitrate as a propellant is one of three factors that cause Takata air bags to explode, according to the Independent Testing Coalition, which is made up of 10 automakers, Autoblog reported. The Independent Testing Coalition found that Takata's inflators don't keep out moisture in high-humidity environments, according to Autoblog. High humidity then causes the already moist air bags to explode with too much force, spraying shrapnel at drivers and passengers. So far, 14 automakers have recalled 24 million vehicles over the faulty air bags in the largest auto recall in U.S. history, Reuters reported. Nine of the U.S. deaths linked to Takata air bags occurred in Honda vehicles. More than 100 people have been injured by the air bags, according to several reports. Honda said the owner of Hanif's car had been mailed multiple recall notices, but repairs were never made, according to Reuters. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Google autonomous vehicle: how do Google's self-driving cars work? - TomoNews

02:01
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA — A Google self-driving car finally was the cause of a crash on Valentine's Day after driving more than 1.3 million miles since 2009, reported Wired. No one was hurt and the damage was minimal, but the crash shows that companies developing the technology still have a ways to go before autonomous vehicles are actually commonplace. In mid-February, as it was driving on a three-lane road in Mountain View, California, a Google self-driving car trying to merge into the center lane hit a public bus. The car had expected the bus to yield. In a statement issued on Monday, Google says it "bears some responsibility" in last month's crash, reported Reuters. In the same statement, Google says it has reviewed the crash and made some changes in their cars' software to prevent similar incidents. Unlike human drivers who can react quickly to unexpected behavior or obstacles on the road, autonomous vehicles aren't always able to do that yet. This is just one of the few important wrinkles Google and other tech companies testing autonomous vehicles need to smooth out. Another flaw with Google's cars is that they require the roads they're traveling on to be precisely mapped out, otherwise the vehicle is unsure of how to behave. These maps are extremely detailed digitizations of the physical world, where things like even the height of every single curb is measured out. However, in general the technology is well-developed and companies have been running tests on the cars for years. Before February's incident, Google reported that its driverless cars had only been involved in 17 accidents, all of which were caused by human error. What allows self-driving cars to be such "careful" drivers is the combination of GPS systems, cameras and various sensors that tell the cars where they're going, how to get there and what's around them at all times. The autonomous vehicles use GPS to match their position with customized Google maps. This allows the cars to select a starting point and an end point, as well as to choose the best routes to take. Radars in the front and back of the cars keep track of other vehicles on the road. The LIDAR sensor rotates 360 degrees and detects the distance between the autonomous vehicles and surrounding objects. A video camera behind the front windshield is able to read road signs and traffic lights. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Affordable housing? ByFusion turns waste plastic into RePlast bricks to make cheap homes - TomoNews

01:12
NEW YORK — A New York startup has developed an innovative way to recycle waste plastic, converting it into an alternative building material that can be used to build affordable housing. The company, called ByFusion, has designed a machine that is highly compact and modular. It can be powered by propane gas or electricity and can process all types of plastic waste, according to the ByFusion website. The plastic waste does not have to be pre-processed. Instead, it is shredded inside the machine before it’s made into a new material called RePlast and compressed into bricks. The RePlast bricks are not as strong as concrete, so are reinforced with steel rods, wire and layers of mortar. The company said RePlast has been used in projects including retaining walls in New Zealand and California, which have withstood environmental tests such as earthquakes. ByFusion has so far raised around $30,000 of a $250,000 target on Indiegogo. On its campaign page, it says the machine will likely be available in the U.S. by May next year. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
