Alfredo Moser's lamp is lighting up one million homes

01:05
Originally published on August 23, 2013 Alfredo Moser's invention, a lamp made out of a plastic bottle filled with water and bleach, has been spreading rapidly around the world and it's expected to be in one million homes by early next year. Moser, a Brazilian mechanic, came up with the invention in 2002 while trying to find a way to light his workshop during a blackout. He took nothing more than an empty plastic bottle of water, two capfuls of bleach, an aluminium foil, heavy-duty scissors, a drill and polyester resin. After pouring water and bleach into the bottle, he made a hole into an aluminium foil and fixed it on top of the bottle. He then drilled a hole into the roof and fixed the bottle with polyester resin to avoid the roof leaking in case of rain. Carmelinda, Moser's wife, told the BBC her husband has always been very good at making things around the house. The lamp gives out as much light as a 40-to-60-watt bulb. However, it doesn't work at night and cannot store energy. According to reports, since its invention it has spread to 16 countries, including Argentina, Tanzania, India, Bangladesh and Fiji. In the Philippines, where a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line and electricity is expensive, the idea took off. According to the BBC, MyShelther Foundation, which specialises in alternative and sustainable construction, started making the lamps in the country in 2011. The organization now trains people to create and install the bottles from which they can also earn a small amount of money. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Kendrick Johnson murdered? New autopsy reveals signs of foul play and missing organs

01:17
The case of Kendrick Johnson, the Valdosta, Georgia high-schooler whose body was found upturned inside a rolled-up gym mat earlier this year has taken a macabre and disturbing turn. After months of campaigning, his parents, unconvinced his death was an accident, won the right to have his body exhumed. A second autopsy has revealed missing organs and signs of foul play. A Lowndes High School student found Johnson's body upside down in the roll on January 11. The investigation concluded Johnson had probably fallen in while reaching for a sneaker, as some students stored gym shoes in the rolls. There, he became trapped, and suffocated. After successfully petitioning the state to exhume their son's body, Johnson's parents hired a private coroner at their own expense. A subsequent second autopsy on June 15 revealed wads of crumpled newspaper stuffed inside the body's cavities. All the organs from the waist up were missing. Dr Bill Anderson, the private pathologist enlisted by the Jacobson's, also found evidence of blunt force trauma consistent with intentional injury on the right side of Johnson's neck and jaw. He concluded this caused the 17-year-old's death. Although found not to be Johnson's, flecks of blood found on the gym's wall remain unidentified. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which conducted the first autopsy, said Johnson's organs were replaced before the body was released to the Harrington Funeral Home in Valdosta. In a letter to the family's attorney, funeral home owner Antonio Harrington said his company never received the teen's organs. The organs "were destroyed through natural process" due to the position of Kendrick Johnson's body at his time of death, he wrote, adding that the organs were then "discarded by the prosector before the body was sent back to Valdosta." A prosector dissects the body for pathological examination. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Loyal guide dog saves blind owner's life after subway track fall

01:20
A blind man who miraculously survived after tumbling onto New York City subway tracks earlier this week has credited his guide dog with saving his life, according to a report by the Associated Press. HELP CECIL AND ORLAND STAY TOGETHER - www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-cecil-williams-keep-his-seeing-eye-dog-orlando Cecil Williams was on his way to visit the dentist when he suddenly began to feel faint. Noticing this his guide dog Orlando began to bark frantically and attempted to prop the 61-year-old up. "He tried to hold me up," an emotional Williams told The Associated Press. Williams lost consciousness and fell from the subway platform. Medication Williams was taking at the time, may have been to blame for his fainting. The loyal black Lab jumped down onto the tracks and attempted to awaken his owner as a subway train hurdled toward them. Luckily, the two were lying in a trough between the rail tracks and escaped serious injury. "The dog saved my life," Williams said. William's insurance is set to expire when he retires in January and he may be forced to give Orlando up for adoption. But, well-wishers have been working hard in an attempt to stop the pair from being separated, and as of Thursday a campaign on crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo has racked up more than $60,000 in donations. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Titan Aerospace unveils the world's first solar-powered UAVs

01:13
Originally published on August 26, 2013 Aircraft designer Titan Aerospace unveiled last week its Solara 50 and 60 unmanned aircrafts, the world's first atmospheric satellites powered by the sun with a mission range of over 4 million kilometres. An atmospheric satellite is a drone that can conduct most of the operations of an orbital satellite, but is much cheaper and more versatile. Among the applications of a Solara aircraft there are disaster recovery, weather monitoring, communications relay, oceanographic research and earth imaging. According to reports, Solara 50 and 60 can be launched at night using power from internal battery banks. When the sun rises, the solar panels covering the crafts' wings and tails, store enough energy to allow them ascend to a position of 20 km above the sea level and to stay aloft continuously for five years, without ever having to land and refuel. The aircrafts will operate in an atmospheric sweet spot known as the tropopause where winds are generally less than 5 knots. Despite its massive dimensions, Solara 50 only weighs about 160 kg, and can carry a payload of 32 kg. According to reports, differently from satellites, it is possible to get the payload back at the end of its five years endurance. As for the speed, Solara 50 can travel at 104 kilometres an hour (about 64 MPH). According to reports, smaller versions of Solara have already flown, and Titan Aerospace is planning to start selling operational systems in less than a year which opens up possibilities like regional internet or a version of Google Maps with real-time images. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. YouTube censorship? Wild Games Studio accused of blocking negative video review

02:13
Game developer Wild Games Studio is in crisis mode after using YouTube's copyright complaint system to remove an unfavorable review. Game reviewer TotalBiscuit aka The Cynical Brit posted a negative review of the Wild Games Studio's newest release, "Day One: Garry's Incident" to YouTube. In the 21-minute review, he said the game "just runs awfully... The combat is so incredibly bad. It's mind-boggling awful... This is the definition of terrible." Wild Games Studio promptly initiated a copyright claim on YouTube against the negative review. This is serious to the YouTube content creator, as a channel can be shut down if it accumulates three copyright strikes. The incident has now turned into an internet war. TotalBiscuit tweeted: "I should point out that this is a game I was sent review code for, it was also the top-ranked video on YouTube for that game." Wild Games Studios responded in defense of their action: "We protected our copyright because TotalBiscuit has no right to make advertising revenues with our license." TotalBiscuit's response to the response? He tweeted: "BULLLLSHITTTTT." Meanwhile, other reviews of the same game are still live on YouTube. TotalBiscuit posted a new video on Sunday detailing his frustration with the game developer. He posted their original correspondence, the copyright disputes, lays out exactly why he should be protected by Fair Use, and makes a case for the alleged abuse of the YouTube system by Wild Games Studios. That video is now the #1 video relating to the game. The original video has been copied and uploaded by another user on DailyMotion. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Scientists discover what triggers allergic reactions to cats

01:13
Originally published on July 25, 2013 Scientists in the UK have discovered how allergic reactions to cats are triggered. A research team from the University of Cambridge discovered that the Fel d 1 protein found in cat dander is the most common cause of severe allergic reactions to cats. Cat dander is microscopic pieces of dry skin cells, which are often accompanied by dried saliva from grooming. It was also discovered that when environmental bacterial toxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is present, it intensifies the body's inflammatory response to the cat protein Fel d 1. The scientists also identified the part of the immune system that recognises the LPS contaminated Fel d 1 is the pathogen recognition receptor Toll-like receptor 4, an important protein in the activation of the innate immune system. They used a drug to inhibit the TLR4 response which then blocked the effects of the cat dander protein on human cells and thereby preventing an inflammatory response. The research is expected to lead to new and improved treatments for cat and possibly dog allergy sufferers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Arizona man Josh Goverman loses finger trying to steal copper wire

01:39
A careless criminal accidentally cut off his own a finger while trying to steal coils of copper wire from an air conditioning repair truck on October 7 in Glendale, Arizona. Police used the severed finger left at the crime scene to make a fingerprint which pointed investigators to 29-year-old Josh Goverman. It is believed that Goverman stole wire off of Bill Bratcher's Champion Air air conditioning repair truck which was parked in front Bratcher's Glendale home. Evidence suggests that Goverman grabbed a bunch of wire off the truck, then pulled it into his car. Somewhere down the line, Goverman got the ring finger on his left hand wrapped up in the wire, but maybe didn't realize it until he started driving away. That same wire wrapped around his finger was also stuck under one of the tires on Bratcher's truck and when Goverman sped off, the wire snapped off his finger. Bratcher got up the next morning to find red, green and black wire strung about and he followed a line to the sidewalk about 20 feet away. At the end of the line was Goverman's finger tip. Police took the severed digit, stuck it on a popsicle stick (the details of how this was done were not available) and rolled in ink for a print. A viable fingerprint was made and police were able to trace it to Goverman. It was not explained how police were able to make the match and it was not reported if Goverman already had a criminal record. About a week after Bratcher found the finger, police caught up with Goverman, according to a report by television channel CBS5 AZ. Goverman was indeed missing a finger when the police found him and he was taken into custody. Police also found that Goverman had posted several graphic photographs depicting the bloody cut-off finger stump on his left hand. On his Facebook profile, however, he claimed to have lost the digit in an accident with a fan belt while helping a friend with his car. He told this same story to police, until they brought out his fingertip on ice. Goverman has been charged with a misdemeanor count of theft. Police say he is welcome to take his finger back, should he desire it. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Audi flies 45 meters through the air at France-Switzerland border check

01:01
This black Audi has seen better days. But it's driver and passenger incredibly, are doing just fine after surviving a spectacular but entirely accidental 140-foot long aerial stunt worthy of Hollywood. The accident occurred late on Friday at this border crossing in the town of Thonex on the Swiss side of the France-Switzerland boundary. According to border guards, the Audi approached the crossing at high speed. The driver says he was distracted with his GPS and didn't notice the guardrail. The vehicle collided with the angled rail and became airborne, sailing as high as 15 feet into the air and clearing a small customs building. Incredibly, the car completed one full barrel roll before landing 140 feet from the impact point. It then skidded another 98 feet before coming to rest. Both occupants walked away, and according to border officials were oblivious to exactly what had just happened. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Fake Florida cop flashes gun at Dunkin Donuts for discount!

01:00
Earlier this month, Charles "Chuck" Barry of Pasco county Florida thought he'd get discount donuts by pretending to be a cop, because cops love donuts so much that its logical Dunkin Donuts would give them a discount, because they hate money or something. Well, apart from using a New Jersey police badge to call himself a US Marshal, Barry also made consecutive trips to the same Dunkin Donuts with family members in tow. After also claiming to be an Air Marshal, because, you know, that's what you call US Marshals when they fly right? The manager at the Dunkin Donuts branch got a real cop to lay in wait for the nearly 400lb impersonator to strike again. When he did, they had him. According to the police report, Mr. Chuck Barry apologised profusely and began to cry. Now his face is all over the internet, in 2D and 3D form thanks to us, and everyone knows that he cried. Oh, he also got arrested and charged with impersonating an officer. Far from being an actual police officer, Mr. Barry works at a photocopy supply shop. If the Dunkin Donuts employees needed to see any more identification than a badge and a gun (because guns in Florida are only possessed by cops), all Ol' Chuck would have been able to produce are some Xeroxes of his voluminous posterior. But maybe that's unfair. Just because a guy is fat, and impersonates a police officer to get a 10% discount on donuts, we can't assume he's just some out of control gun flailing lardo'. Even though evidence in this case would support that assertion. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Burmese government reveals its haunted new capital Naypyidaw

02:04
Myanmar's junta government became an international joke when they decided to move the capital from Yangon to Naypyidaw in 2005. They spent over 3 billion USD to build this royal prison where everything looks glamorous but at the same time, it's a ghost town. There's only one local market, two shopping malls and two movie theaters. Except the downtown area, the rest of the city looks empty. To opposition parties, this new capital is the military government's own royal prison. The road leading up to the congressional building has more than 20 lanes, which makes it look like a landing strip. The government also sets up numerous defensive emplacements around the presidential compound. Scholars believe that it is the military government's plan to reestablish its authority by moving the capital from the prosperous Yangon to the heavily guarded Naypyidaw. Most of the buildings are built like castles and there is even a moat built around the entire administrative district. Unlike the new capital, most antique buildings in the old capital Yangon are preserved due to the nation's long stagnant economy. According to Moe Moe Lwin, the Director of Yangon Heritage Trust, Myanmar hasn't had much opportunity to develop in the past few decades, meaning antique buildings have been preserved. While modernization is a common goal for many global cities, it usually comes at the cost of wide swaths of architectural heritage. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. The 'Iron Man' armor suit gives soldiers gives soldiers super-human strength

01:17
Originally published on October 15, 2013 The U.S. Special Operations Command (Ussocom) called on scientists to develop a lightweight smart suit using kevlar and nanotechnology that functions as a 'practical exoskeleton' to protect soldiers from shrapnel and bullets. The Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS) -- named after the mythological Greek automaton made of bronze that Zeus assigned to protect his lover Europa -- will give the wearer super-human strength and protect soldiers from intensive combat situations. Professor Gareth McKinley, who has been working on his 'liquid armour' technology for 11 years, said the suit sounds like Iron Man. The suit can monitors a soldier's heart rate, hydration levels and core temperature and respond to the data, supplied by an on-board computer hooked up to sensors, to keep a soldier in the best conditions for battle by providing heat, air conditioning and oxygen. The armor can also transform from a more liquid form to a solid in a fraction of a second under the influence of a magnetic field or electric current. If a soldier is wounded, the suit monitor their health and even stop bleeding using a "wound stasis" program such as one being developed by DARPA that sprays foam onto open injuries. The hydraulics powered exoskeletons can attached on soldiers' arms and legs to allow them to carry more gear and run faster than they would on their own. The night vision equipped in the lightweight suit will increase soldiers' mobility at night, while the antennas offer an capacity for communications. Professor McKinley said, "Like all good superheros, Talos has one weakness. For the Army's Talos, the weak spot is either the need to carry around a heavy pump for an hydraulic system, or lots of heavy batteries. We don't have Iron Man's power source yet!" -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Boy sneaks on plane, flies to Las Vegas from Minneapolis-St. Paul

00:59
A 9-year-old boy managed to sneak onto a plane bound for Las Vegas on a Delta Airlines flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul Thursday morning. According to reports, the boy ran away from home and got himself to the airport on the light rail. He grabbed a bag from a luggage carousel, then had something to eat in a outside of the security checkpoint. To avoid having to pay for his food, he left the bag at his table and told the restaurant staff that he had visit the men's room. He asked them to keep an eye on the bag, then never returned. Without a boarding pass, the boy got through security, and then onto flight 1651 to Las Vegas. Crew eventually got suspicious of the child travelling alone when he failed to have a seat assignment. The police were called and met the crew at the airport in Las Vegas when the plane landed. The boy was taken into Child Protective Services and eventually sent home. No one is certain how the bold child was able to pass the TSA security check, the gate crew inspecting boarding passes and the crew on the flight who let him take off without a seat assignment. The TSA is blaming the government shut-down, claiming it has left them with fewer staff than usual. Metropolitan Airports Commission spokesman Patrick Hogan said that in the 13 years during which he has worked at the airport, this is the first time he has heard of such an incident taking place in it, according to a report by CBS Minnesota. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. He is a musician, but once he puts on a Mao Suit and gels his hair, he looks just like the infamous young North Korean dictator. His impersonation of Kim Jong-un went viral on Facebook last April and later even won him a commercial opportunity from an Israeli fast food company. He has Hong Kongers, some of whom have actually mistaken him for the young leader. Boston subway rescue: three men leap onto tracks to rescue fallen rider

01:21
Three men at the North Station orange line sprang into action after a Malden resident fell onto the train tracks, all of which was captured by MBTA video cameras. The fallen rider, who earlier in the evening celebrated passing his medical boards with two drinks, does not recall anything about the episode. Lucky for him, he had three heroes to rescue him. The incident took place at about 9pm on Wednesday. The doctor can be seen approaching the yellow safety line and takes what appears to be a flying leap onto the tracks. His fellow passengers react with horror. One lady swings her handbag in an effort to signal any inbound trains. A man tries to get the fallen rider's attention by clapping his hands. Two more men leap into action, jumping down onto the tracks. A third man crosses from the other side of the subway platform to assist, in the process taking precarious steps around the electrified third rail. Off camera, MBTA workers are notified and an emergency alarm is activated. This prevents any trains from pulling into station. But the three heroes don't know that. They braved the possibility of oncoming trains and risked their lives to rescue someone they didn't know. All three men lift the fallen rider back onto the subway platform. Despite the actions of the three heroes, the MBTA does not encourage passengers to jump down on the subway tracks. The right course of action, they say, is to sound the alarm with MBTA workers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Paralyzed man's balls eaten by pet dog in Arkansas

01:09
A 39-year-old Trumann, Arkansas man who is paralyzed below the waist woke up Monday morning to find that one of his testicles had been eaten by a "small, white fluffy dog" that he had rescued from the street three weeks before. A "burning pain" in his mid-section is what woke the man up, and he looked down to see his new pet with blood on its muzzle and front feet, chewing on one of his testicles. When the man looked closer, he found that the dog had actually chewed off and eaten one of his testicles. He said that he had never taken the dog to the doctor to get him checked out, so he wasn't sure if it was vaccinated. When police took the canine to see the vet for the first time, it was also its last visit, as the doctor had to put it down. The dog's head was later sent to the health department for testing to make sure it wasn't infected with rabies. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. YouTube Content ID changes irritate content creators

02:15
YouTube was never really considered broke, so why does Google insist on "fixing" it every other month? This time it's the change to the Content ID system that has our collective panties in a bunch. YouTube's Content ID system is an automated program that crawls any video that's being monetized (the ones that the video owner has allowed advertising on) and looks for any infringing content that may appear in the video per DCMA rules. In the past, it would flag content that was a blatant rip-off by automatically listing the video as private, then notifying both the infringing party along with the alleged content owner. While it could have made life hard for people like us who make a living producing funny yet informative videos that sometimes have to sample someone else's content, the system was working decently. However last Friday when the new ContentID system went live, we were immediately slapped with a takedown notice ... from ourselves!! This new system is so sensitive that it totally ignored the fact that we have multiple channels so we can put our content in multiple languages and markets. We thought we were alone in this, but when the dust settled we noticed a lot of YouTubers were having similar issues. There was the indie videogame studio accused of infringing on Sony because five seconds of its gaming clip looked like a PlayStation title. Then there was a guy who got a takedown notice because he happened to record himself playing a cover of a pop song ... on an ACCORDION. So we formally submit an open letter to the big GOOG: Dear Google, We know you're the coolest company around. You're making cars that drive themselves, phones that know what you want before you do, and have been serving up detailed searches of any and everything the internet has to offer for a very long time. We know you want to make YouTube into the world's media center. But please stop for a minute and remember it was lolcats, game walkthroughs, car accidents caught on Russian dash cams, guys jumping outta their underwear while on a trampoline, people making everything better with bacon and crappy 3D animations that make fun of it that make YouTube what it is, not the companies that are trying to take the same ol garbage they've been making and put it on the internet. Remember your roots YouTube! Kennedy Assassination 50th anniversary

01:53
November 22 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, in Dallas, Texas. Around lunchtime on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Texas Governor John Connally and his wife Nellie were travelling in a motorcade through Dallas on the way to the city's Trade Mart when Kennedy was shot and killed by lone gunman Lee Harvey Oswald as the vehicle passed through Dealey Plaza. Oswald, positioned on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository where he worked, had a clear view of Kennedy as the motorcade passed down Houston Street, but opted not to shoot, instead waiting until the vehicle turned onto Elm Street, where the view was partially obscured by trees. According to the Warren Commission, Oswald fired three shots using a 6.5mm Mannlicher-Carcano rifle, the first of which ricocheted off a tree before ending up near the railway bridge where it struck a bystander. The subsequent second and third shots hit the president, the third shot being the fatal one. According to analysis of footage available of the assassination Oswald would have had to fire the three shots within 8.4 seconds. The second shot, often referred to as the "magic bullet" entered Kennedy's back, exiting through his throat. It then passed through Governor Connally's right shoulder and chest before hitting his right wrist and lodging in his left leg. The third and fatal shot hit Kennedy in the head causing the right front of his head to explode. Footage of the assassination was captured by Dallas dressmaker Abraham Zapruder who was filming the motorcade from the Grassy Knoll. Several witnesses present reported seeing a puff of smoke from near a white picket fence next to where Zapruder was filming, leading to theories of a second gunman and a fourth shot. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Seattle teen's life saved by 'bulletproof' glasses

01:05
A Seattle teen is surely thanking her optometrist tonight after a one-in-a-million near miss with a stray bullet. Sixteen-year-old Alonza Bryant was in her living room nodding off to sleep while watching TV on the sofa in what was supposed to be just another ordinary evening at her family's home in southern Seattle. Except that some local gang-bangers targeted her home for a drive-by shooting. When the bullets started flying, one struck Alonza in the face, but not before having most of the force deflected by the frame of her glasses. "If I hadn't had my glasses on, I wouldn't be here right now," she says. Her mother, LaVette Bryant, insists that there is no one with any gang affiliation living in the home and wonders why the house was targeted. In any case, they plan to move to a different house. Seattle police are still investigating the scene. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Car found in Brule Creek linked to teens missing in 1971

00:55
A beige 1960 Studebaker Lark found in Brule Creek this week is believed to be linked to two 17-year-old South Dakota girls, Pamella Jackson and Cheryl Miller, who went missing in 1971. The vehicle was discovered by a fisherman who happened to be passing by the creek, just south of the 310th Street bridge. It was overturned and its tires just broke the water's surface. Police were called in; they lifted the mangled car and found skeletal remains inside. A recovered hubcap and the license plate confirmed that the car matched the description of the Studebaker once owned by Cheryl Miller's grandfather, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said. The girls were last seen in their home town of Vermillion, South Dakota, on May 29, 1971. They had gone to visit Miller's sick grandmother who was in the hospital, then headed out to a party. Along the way, they asked some boys in front of a church for directions. The girls followed the boys' car, and the boys claimed they lost them along the way. Authorities believe that the Studebaker remained submerged in the creek for 42 years, being revealed only this week after high spring water levels were followed by a summer drought. It is not yet known if the remains in the vehicle belong to one or more bodies. In 2007 David Lykken of Alcester, South Dakota, was indicted for murder in the deaths of Jackson and Miller, but all charges were dropped when it was discovered that a prisoner made up a plan to falsely implicate Lykken. News of the discovery of the Studebaker comes just two weeks after two cars containing the remains of six people were found at the bottom of Foss Lake in Oklahoma. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. China's Great Firewall has cracks too!

01:57
Cyber activists are pushing back against the Chinese government's censorship of foreign media websites by taking advantage of an apparent weakness in China's enormous internet control apparatus, the Great Firewall. China recently blocked the Wall Street Journal's and Reuters' Chinese-language websites after both ran stories on a New York Times piece that revealed business connections between JP Morgan Chase and Lily Chang, daughter of former premier Wen Jiabao. The New York Times' English and Chinese-language sites have been blocked since 2012. Charlie Smith, co-founder of GreatFire.org, a site that monitors internet censorship in China, has helped find a way to make these sites accessible in China without the need of firewall-circumventing software. The strategy involves creating replicas of existing sites, also known as mirror sites, which Beijing is unable to block without shutting down a significant portion of overall internet traffic. GreatFire.org created a mirror site for Reuters Chinese that can be accessed in China. The mirror sites are special because instead of using their own domains, they use a subpath of Amazon or Google's domains. Chinese authorities can't block the mirror sites without blocking the entire domains for Amazon and Google. GreatFire.org also uses the method of mirroring for its own blocked website, FreeWeibo.com. Free Weibo displays Weibo content that has been blocked by Sina and the Chinese Communist Party. The Chinese have long used annoying tactics like internet censorship, denials of visas to journalists and verbal warnings when they feel threatened by foreign news agencies. Mirror sites are more vital than ever, especially now that western media outlets like Bloomberg are choosing self-censorship in exchange for financial gain. Will free speech prevail? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daily videos brought to you by THE Taiwanese Animators behind the infamous Tiger Woods animation. Taiwan rockslide: 2,000-ton boulder teetering, close to falling

01:06
Footage of a 330-ton boulder rolling down a Keelung mountainside in Taiwan during a rainstorm and almost flattening a passing car below went viral. However, most people are unaware of the fact that there is an even bigger rock still teetering on the edge of the mountain, ready to tumble down 150 meters into the 75 or so homes and shops below. The second boulder weighs about 2,000 tons, which is roughly equivalent to the weight of 200 fully grown African elephants. To prevent the boulder from tumbling down the mountain, experts plan to bore holes into the large rock and inject it with a material that will gradually expand. When this happens, the material will crack and shatter the rock from the inside, breaking it into much more manageable pieces that can be hauled away. The first boulder came crashing down the mountain on August 31 when heavy rains loosened the dirt underneath the humongous rock. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Patent troll James Logan sues podcasters, EFF to the rescue!

01:34
Podcasters like Adam Carolla thought they were entering into fairly safe territory when they started their shows online. There are no censors to offend, and no commercial interruption, unless you want there to be. But who would have expected that it was the very act of talking on the internet that would attract a massive lawsuit? A two bit con artist named James Logan, and his styrofoam front of a company, Personal Audio, have gone about shaking down podcasters for cash, or else face a protracted legal fight. The strategy is called patent trolling, and it works by getting a flimsy or vague patent filing and then using it to sue actual companies. If it works, the patent troll gets a big pay day. If it doesn't work, all they've lost is the cost of a court filing because their lawyers only get paid when they win, and companies rarely countersue. James Logan's biggest payday came when he got Apple to cough up $8 million dollars for some crap Apple couldn't be bothered to argue over. Now, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is challenging Personal Audio's patents, saying they are full of shiz, have nothing to do with podcasting or playlists, and James Logan is full of it. Unfortunately, Apple and four other tech companies, RIM, Sony, Ericsson and Microsoft, have already figured out there's big profit to be made in spurious patent suits. Apple's been profiting from a completely BS patent on object oriented programming for years. Now the five companies have formed a super-troll, named Rockstar Consortium US LP. Rockstar's goal is to brutalize Google and take the competitiveness out of the smartphone market, or something. Will such a large and litigious patent trolling behemoth be too large an enemy for the EFF to take on? Lets hope not. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daily videos brought to you by THE Taiwanese Animators behind the infamous Tiger Woods animation. Philippines navy adds former U.S. Coast Guard ship to its arsenal

01:46
Originally published on August 6, 2013 The Philippines on Tuesday took possession of a former U.S. Coast Guard cutter as part of its biggest military upgrade in decades. The BRP Ramon Alcaraz, formerly the USCGC Dallas, is the second vessel of its type received by the Philippines from the United States. The 46-year-old Hamilton-class cutter joins the BRP Gregorio del Pilar, formerly the USCGC Hamilton, as the largest vessel in the Philippines' navy. According to Reuters: "The military build-up, which is heavily focused on maritime capability, is likely to add to tension over the South China Sea that has threatened to draw in the United States as it refocuses its military attention on Asia. "President Benigno Aquino and senior ministers watched as the frigate, BRP Ramon Alcaraz, sailed into the Philippines' Subic Bay, a former U.S. naval base, after a two-month voyage from South Carolina, where its 88 Philippine crew trained for a year. "The 46-year-old Hamilton-class cutter, the second of its type the Philippines has received from its U.S. ally, will be used to patrol areas of the South China Sea near the Philippine coast that have become a major source of tension with Beijing." "Aquino is determined to modernize the navy and air force after three past administrations failed to implement a 330-billion-peso ($7.6-billion) spending plan passed in 1995, after the Chinese occupation of the half-submerged Mischief Reef. "But a weak economy and two long-running insurgencies by Maoist and Muslim rebels drained the country's funds and left it with one of Southeast Asia's weakest militaries. When Aquino took over in 2010, just 10 percent of the 1995 plan's budget had been used. "He won congressional approval to extend the plan 15 years and spend $1.7 billion to upgrade the military over the next five years, helped by robust economic growth that hit 7.8 percent in the first quarter this year, the fastest in Asia. "China, Taiwan and Vietnam claim the entire South China Sea while Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines have partial claims on areas believed to have rich deposits of oil and natural gas. Two trains hit car after high-speed police chase in Utah

01:12
Car hit by train twice after police chase in Utah: A 29-year-old woman involved in not one but two train collisions after a high-speed police chase on Sunday morning in Woods Cross, Utah, has escaped with only minor injuries. Woods Cross police responded to an "unwanted guest" disturbance call at Redwood Road address around 8.20 a.m. They received a description of a woman and a black Mercedes. Moments later, the patrolmen spotted the suspect driver on Redwood Road and attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver fled. Police dashboard camera video shows the black late-model Mercedes speeding in the direction of a level train crossing and colliding with a passing freight train. One officer then tried to pull the woman free but a second running on a parallel track train slammed into the back of her vehicle pushing it along the track. It remained trapped for several hours after the woman was freed. The woman, un-named in media reports, was rushed to hospital with a broken arm. Police haven't confirmed whether she was under the influence of alcohol. She faces charges of evading arrest. || Watch more crazy police car chases videos here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5_Zg40DC3OEoe-60fHIcvR5jV_4Lns2C -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. 3D-printed Cortex Exoskeleton may be the future of orthopedic casts

00:50
Originally published on October 30, 2013 A design for a 3D-printed cast has been dubbed one of the finalists for the 2013 James Dyson Award. The cast, called the Cortex Exoskeleton and designed by Jake Evill, is meant to be more flexible and convenient than traditional orthopedic plaster casts. The technology aims at providing more structured support for broken limbs while also remaining lighter and more durable than currently used casts made of plaster or polyurethane. Traditional casts are generally problematic in that they are susceptible to water, so wearers have trouble bathing, which can lead to hygiene issues. Such casts are also itchy, uncomfortable and inconvenient. The Cortex Exoskeleton would be created using 3D printing technology to ensure that it fits well over a broken limb, with an extra membrane structure around the point of injury. Newly printed Cortex casts would be left unfastened so that it can snaps shut around the affected limb. The waterproof nature of the material and its design allows washing to be possible without taking the cast off. It is also thin enough for clothing to fit over it. According to Evill, his design addresses the growing issue of medical waste and a rising number of fractures and breaks. The winner of the James Dyson Award will be announced within a week. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Stowaway death: 22-year-old man found dead after four days in plane's landing gear

01:01
The body of a Georgian man was found on Thursday in the landing gear of an Airbus A-330 at a Moscow airport shortly after the plane arrived from Rimini, Italy. According to reports, the man, 22-year-old Georgian national Giorgio Abduladze, was wearing only shorts and a t-shirt when he climbed into the right landing gear of an I Fly Airbus. The plane took off in the evening, headed to Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. When a plane reaches high altitude, the temperature can drop to around -50 Celsius degrees and oxygen becomes scarce. Stowaway passengers hiding outside the pressurized cabin have little chance of survival and often die from hypothermia and anoxia, lack of oxygen. After landing in Moscow's Vnukovo airport at around 1 a.m., the plane was subject to a post-landing inspection and Abduladze's body was discovered on the gear. According to reports, identifying documents were found in his pockets.A preliminary investigation suggests the body was there for four days and made several flights, RT reported. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Police brutality? Washington Township cop roughs up Toledo, Ohio, family (video)

02:22
Police brutality or reasonable force? Another day, another Internet video of what looks like a cop on a power trip. This time, in Toledo, Ohio, over the weekend. What should have been an uneventful traffic stop for Cassandra Meyers ended in a forceful confrontation for her father-in-law Aaron Tatkowski and his family. Meyers was pulled over near her house for a licence place violation by a Washington Township police officer on Sunday. Moments late, Tatkowski arrived home with his girlfriend, son and two young daughters to see the officer speaking to Meyers. Uncomfortable with the way the man was speaking to her, he questioned the officer, who told him to return to his truck. He did as requested. Tatkowski says the officer then roughly pulled him from the car and then his girlfriend, after she protested. He claims the officer forced him, his girlfriend and 14-year-old son onto the ground. The situation became increasingly tense as the officer stood over them pointing his weapon at their heads. Tatkowski insists he complied with the officer's orders. Tatkowski was treated at the scene for cuts to his knee and elbow before being taken to hospital. The policeman, identified as Officer Hart, was treated for scratches, according to a police report cited by Toledo News Now. The Washington Township Police chief said he stands by the police report, but made no further comment, Toledo News Now reported. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Bullet bounces of man's head! Florida man survives headshot

01:00
A lucky Florida grandfather survived being hit by a stray bullet in the head while driving last Thursday. Walter Santiago, 62, said he heard a bang and then felt pain on the side of his head. He thought something may have broken off his car and flown in through the open window, until his granddaughter saw blood coming down from his forehead. "You've been shot," she said. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office said a bullet, most likely fired from far away, came through the window and glanced off Santiago's head just above his left temple. Santiago was driving at the time because he had just picked up his 13-year-old granddaughter from school. He was travelling east on State Road 54 near Bruce Lane with his driver's side window open about 4 to 5 inches when he was struck by the bullet at around 12:15pm. Santiago received six stitches at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman Doug Tobin said the bullet must have been fired from far away because the bullet glanced off Santiago's head and bounced around after entering the vehicle. The bullet came through the window on a downward trajectory, Tobin said. It hit the car's seat near Santiago's right thigh after bouncing off his head. The bullet then bounced up and cracked the front windshield before coming to rest on the passenger's side floor board, the spokesman said. The police said the bullet was most likely fired from a high-caliber handgun. No one has been arrested yet. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. A stomach bug struck 26 students during a Qantas flight from Chile to Australia and left them vomiting and suffering from diarrhea throughout much of the 14-hour flight from Santiago to Sydney. The group, who are believed to have all been travelling together, contracted the norovirus prior to departure, according to Qantas. Symptoms of the infection only became evident midway through the flight. The 26 ill passengers were moved to the rear of the plane where four lavatories were located. Upon arrival in Sydney, 16 of the passengers required hospitalization, three of whom had to be carried from the plane on stretchers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Harvard student who made bomb threat to miss finals arrested

01:11
A Harvard student was arrested and charged on Tuesday with making a bomb threat that caused the evacuation of four buildings and disrupted the university during final exams, the U.S. Attorney's office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Eldo Kim, a 20-year-old Harvard psychology undergrad majoring in psychology, allegedly sent e-mails to Harvard University police, university officials and others Monday morning warning of "shrapnel bombs" set in specific locations around the campus, according to an FBI affidavit. Kim is set to appear in federal court to face the charges on Wednesday. It took about 20 minutes before the fake threat caused the evacuations of four buildings. Emerson, Sever and Thayer halls were cleared out in Harvard Yard in addition to the Science Center just beyond the yard. President Obama was briefed, and oh yeah, Kim's final was canceled. Meanwhile, the FBI, ATF, US Secret Service, Harvard University Police, Cambridge Police, Boston Police and Massachusetts State Police all converged on Harvard Yard. Kim tried to mask his identity by using the anonymous email service Guerrilla Mail and TOR to hide his IP address. But by nightfall he was already confessing to an FBI agent. As well as being a dancer with the Harvard Breakers, a bio on a Harvard website identifies Kim as a research assistant studying "partisan taunting," whatever the hell that is. Kim now faces five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Upside: no more exams. Downside: prison showers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Hair clip-inspired clamp device controls traumatic bleeding

01:16
Originally published on September 25, 2013 A new device designed to control severe bleeding that was approved this summer by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already saved the life of a Mississippi man after a Memphis air medical service began using it in late August. The iTClamp hemorrhage control system is a hair clip-like clamp that closes the edges of the wound to create a temporary pool of blood under pressure, which can form a stable clot and stay in place for hours until the wound can be surgically repaired. On Aug. 29 it was used by first responders from Memphis-based air medical transport service Hospital Wing on a 64-year-old Olive, Mississippi man who was trimming trees in his yard when his chainsaw became caught in his sleeve, leaving a 7-inch-long, inch-deep cut in his harm that bled uncontrollably. The medical flight crew applied the iTClamp to the man's wound before airlifting him to a local hospital for trauma operating room services. He received stitches and was released from the hospital eight hours after he arrived, according to the San Antonio Express News. Made by medical device firm iTraumaCare, also known as Innovative Trauma Care Inc., the iTClamp was invented by Dennis Filips, who served three tours in Afghanistan as a trauma surgeon for the Canadian navy. The iTClamp is portable, can be easily applied and is being sold for around $100 in the U.S., which means it can be used not only by first responders but also by ordinary people in their first-aid kits. Unlike a tourniquet, the iTClamp allows blood to continue to flow to the extremities, meaning it can be used to control bleeding from potentially fatal injuries in the neck, abdomen and groin area where tourniquets won't work. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. MIT scientists create X-ray vision using Wi-Fi

01:10
Researchers at MIT have come up with a Wi-Fi based technology to help track the movement of individuals, even when the pass behind a wall. The technology, christened Wi-Vi, uses a low-power Wi-fi signal and its reflections to track movement. The secret behind Wi-Vi is that it uses two transmitters and a single receiver. The second transmitter's signal is the inverse of the first. Any identical reflections, such as those from static objects, therefore cancel each other out leaving only moving signals. The signals can show when a subject in another room is moving away from and towards the receiver. Wi-Vi's inventors believe the technology could one day be used for a range of applications including search and rescue operations in disaster areas and by police to identify the number of suspects and their locations in a building before a raid. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. 3D-printer: Organovo to manufacture liver tissues

01:26
Originally published on August 21, 2013 San Diego-based company Organovo has developed a bio-printer that can make strips of liver tissue that could be used to test new drugs before they are administered to humans. One of the printer's two syringes is filled with spheroids containing parenchymal liver cells, which are used in assessing the potential toxicity or efficacy of drugs. The second syringe contains bio-ink with non-parenchymal liver cells, which bolster cellular development, and a hydrogel that helps with extrusion. A computer connected to the printer instructs a robotic arm that moves the syringe to print a mold in a honeycomb pattern. A small sensor then determines the placement of the first syringe based on the given coordinates, then parenchymal cells are added to the well plate's mold. After the different cells are mixed, the well plate is placed into an incubator where they continue fusing until they eventually form the complex matrix of a liver tissue." According to Organovo's website, the ultimate goal is to develop living, multicellular human tissues that can be maintained in laboratories for both functional and histological changes in response to injury, pathogens, or treatments. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Why sleep is important: Brain uses sleep to cleanse itself of toxins

01:15
Originally published on November 21, 2013 Sleep helps cleanse the brain of toxins that are generated by daily cognition, according to a new study published in the journal science by scientists from the University of Rochester Medical Center and New York University. The study's authors also suggest some brain disorders may in part be the result of failing to clear away some toxic proteins. During nightly rest the brain refreshes itself by removing the buildup of mental metabolites such as beta-amyloids (Aβ) and tau proteins, byproducts of a day's cogitation. Mismanagement of neural waste may slow the electrical signals across synapses and cause neurons to die. Accumulation of beta-amyloids and tau proteins could lead to Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The brain's waste removal system, known as the glymphatic system, is more active during sleep when the glial cells that keep nerve cells alive shrink, increasing the size of the interstitial space, the gaps between brain tissue, allowing more fluid to flow through and wash the toxins away. Tiny pores on projections called "end feet" from Astrocytes, a type of glial cell, suck cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from blood vessels into the interstitial space. The clear cerebrospinal fluid enters the brain rapidly to mix with interstitial fluid and wash brain waste out to blood vessels. The waste then ends up in the liver. The transporting of fluid across cell membranes requires a lot of energy, which might be the reason the brain needs to clean itself and process sensory information at separate times, the study's authors suggested. Noting the link between sleep deprivation or disruption and neurodegenerative diseases, the authors suggest that neural trash removal must be one of sleep's major benefits. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Small-scale gold mining exposes thousands to mercury poisoning

01:12
Originally published on September 20, 2013 Next month 140 countries will sign the U.N. Minamata Convention, which aims to regulate the use of mercury to reduce rates of contamination in countries where small-scale gold miners operate. The convention is named after the world's biggest mass mercury poisoning, which occurred 60 years ago in Japan. The cause of the poisoning was identified only 30 years later as a local plastics factory that was dumping mercury into a nearby bay. Mercury is a neurotoxin that affects the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls movement. It also harms the kidneys and other organs. Hand tremors, coordination problems and headaches are among the early symptoms of mercury intoxication, which can also cause birth defects. Small-scale miners, who are responsible for producing about 15 percent of the world's gold, typically use mercury to extract gold from rock or soil, putting themselves and the environment at risk of mercury poisoning. Approximately 10 to 15 million people are involved in the practice worldwide, including 3 million in Indonesia. Miners wash crushed gold ore with mercury by rivers with their bare hands, poisoning themselves and waterways. Afterwards the gold, now an amalgam of mercury and gold, is brought to smelters which burn away the mercury, poisoning people and the environment nearby. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Fast-food strikes and protests aim at 100 US cities

01:23
Fast food workers have announced plans to strike in more than 100 American cities on Thursday to demand higher wages. The action, which builds on efforts made more than a year ago to raise the national minimum hourly wage of $7.25, will see protesters demand a wage increase to $15 an hour. The one-day walk-off follows similar actions over the summer, and while organizers admit the single move may not be enough to make fast food companies increase employee compensation, they stress the protest is but one step in the right direction. So what if the striking workers get what they want? How might this affect the American fast food industry. We here at NMA present a few ideas ... If wages go up, it seems possible that menu process with follow suit. This could make fast food slightly less attractive, and maybe people will eat at home more often, or maybe they will just eat smaller portions of the tasty, yet fatty, salty products. Or maybe folks higher up the food chain will have to make less money, which might pose problems for their households. Executives might have sell their second yacht, or maybe their trophy wives will abandon them for Silicon Valley geeks, or Middle Eastern oil tycoons. But would this mean an increase in the quality of the lives of the people actually doing the dirty work at fast food chains? Maybe making a living wage would mean that these people could provide better lives for their families, assuming the companies wouldn't lay a bunch of people off to offset the costs incurred by better wages. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daily videos brought to you by THE Taiwanese Animators behind the infamous Tiger Woods animation. The Thai government has initiated a five-year pilot project that uses aerial reforestation to boost forest regeneration. Aerial reforestation is a technique used to quickly plant large numbers of new trees. Local tree seeds are mixed with soil and shaped into small balls called seed bombs. The seed bombs are dropped from airplanes over deteriorated forests. On Wednesday the Royal Thai Air Force loaded the seed bombs into a plane and dropped them over 5,000 rai of a wildlife sanctuary in Phitsanulok province, the Bangkok Post reported. Seeds from local plants including phayungs, maka mongs and kaboks have been dropped with the aim of regenerating the area and transforming it into a healthy, green forest by 2017. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Drinking three liters of water a day gives you younger skin: study

01:13
Drinking three liters of water a day wil help you look younger and prettier, according to the results of an experiment carried out by 42-year-old British reporter, Sarah Smith. After years of suffering from headaches and poor digestion, Smith's neurologist and nutritionist suggested she drink up to three litres of liquid a day to improve her body function. Two weeks after beginning the water therapy, her chronic headaches had vanished and her skin had improved. After a month, her skin was lustrous and she had shed two pounds. The doctor points out that our kidneys, which filter waste products from the blood before turning it to urine, will quickly enjoy the benefits of a good flushing. The extra fluid also allows skin cells to regenerate more efficiently. Smith said she now feels fitter, leaner and healthier, and her husband and friends say she looks ten years younger. "Whatever happens, I am going to keep on drinking three litres of water a day - and would advise every woman to do the same (after checking with her doctor, of course)", she wrote in the Daily Mail, a newspaper. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
