Thief shot dead during attempted motorbike hijack in Sao Paulo

01:16
Dramatic video has hit the web in which a thief attempting to hijack a motorbike on a Sao Paulo street is shot dead by a police officer who springs into action while watching the theft unfold from inside an unmarked car. Originally posted on LiveLeak, the footage captured by a helmet camera belonging to the rider of the coveted motorcycle is clear and graphic. It shows in detail the moment one of the two would-be hijackers on another bike seizes the motorcycle's handle bar and forces the rider to give up his machine at gunpoint. The bike's owner then retreats to the side of the road allows the pillion passenger to take his high-performance Honda. Just a moment before the thief is able to ride off, a policeman emerges from an unmarked car and fires two shots from a sidearm into the man, knocking him from the bike. The other thief is seen speeding away. From its position on the ground, the helmet camera captures the passing minutes as police berate the injured man while he waits for an ambulance. Unconfirmed reports say the young would-be hijacker later died from his injuries. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Loyal guide dog saves blind owner's life after subway track fall

01:20
A blind man who miraculously survived after tumbling onto New York City subway tracks earlier this week has credited his guide dog with saving his life, according to a report by the Associated Press. HELP CECIL AND ORLAND STAY TOGETHER - www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-cecil-williams-keep-his-seeing-eye-dog-orlando Cecil Williams was on his way to visit the dentist when he suddenly began to feel faint. Noticing this his guide dog Orlando began to bark frantically and attempted to prop the 61-year-old up. "He tried to hold me up," an emotional Williams told The Associated Press. Williams lost consciousness and fell from the subway platform. Medication Williams was taking at the time, may have been to blame for his fainting. The loyal black Lab jumped down onto the tracks and attempted to awaken his owner as a subway train hurdled toward them. Luckily, the two were lying in a trough between the rail tracks and escaped serious injury. "The dog saved my life," Williams said. William's insurance is set to expire when he retires in January and he may be forced to give Orlando up for adoption. But, well-wishers have been working hard in an attempt to stop the pair from being separated, and as of Thursday a campaign on crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo has racked up more than $60,000 in donations. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Alfredo Moser's lamp is lighting up one million homes

01:05
Originally published on August 23, 2013 Alfredo Moser's invention, a lamp made out of a plastic bottle filled with water and bleach, has been spreading rapidly around the world and it's expected to be in one million homes by early next year. Moser, a Brazilian mechanic, came up with the invention in 2002 while trying to find a way to light his workshop during a blackout. He took nothing more than an empty plastic bottle of water, two capfuls of bleach, an aluminium foil, heavy-duty scissors, a drill and polyester resin. After pouring water and bleach into the bottle, he made a hole into an aluminium foil and fixed it on top of the bottle. He then drilled a hole into the roof and fixed the bottle with polyester resin to avoid the roof leaking in case of rain. Carmelinda, Moser's wife, told the BBC her husband has always been very good at making things around the house. The lamp gives out as much light as a 40-to-60-watt bulb. However, it doesn't work at night and cannot store energy. According to reports, since its invention it has spread to 16 countries, including Argentina, Tanzania, India, Bangladesh and Fiji. In the Philippines, where a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line and electricity is expensive, the idea took off. According to the BBC, MyShelther Foundation, which specialises in alternative and sustainable construction, started making the lamps in the country in 2011. The organization now trains people to create and install the bottles from which they can also earn a small amount of money. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Scientists discover what triggers allergic reactions to cats

01:13
Originally published on July 25, 2013 Scientists in the UK have discovered how allergic reactions to cats are triggered. A research team from the University of Cambridge discovered that the Fel d 1 protein found in cat dander is the most common cause of severe allergic reactions to cats. Cat dander is microscopic pieces of dry skin cells, which are often accompanied by dried saliva from grooming. It was also discovered that when environmental bacterial toxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is present, it intensifies the body's inflammatory response to the cat protein Fel d 1. The scientists also identified the part of the immune system that recognises the LPS contaminated Fel d 1 is the pathogen recognition receptor Toll-like receptor 4, an important protein in the activation of the innate immune system. They used a drug to inhibit the TLR4 response which then blocked the effects of the cat dander protein on human cells and thereby preventing an inflammatory response. The research is expected to lead to new and improved treatments for cat and possibly dog allergy sufferers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Dog saves South Carolina boy from abusive nanny

00:49
A babysitter in South Carolina is behind bars after a loyal dog alerted the parents of a little boy she was physically abusing. The unsuspecting parents of a 7-month-old hired 22-year-old Alexis Kahn to look after the youngster, but it wasn't long until she and the family pet, a black lab and German shepherd-mix called Killian developed an unfriendly relationship. Killian had become protective over the youngster and would growl and bark at the sight of the nanny. Taking notice, the boy's parent's became suspicious and at one point set an iPhone to record audio and planted the device under the couch. What they found was shocking. Kahn can be heard on the recording shouting expletives at the crying boy and even slapping sounds as the boy's cries changed from fright to pain. "We just could not believe it," the boy's father Jordan, told local media, adding that he immediately took the baby to the hospital to be checked out. The police were alerted after hearing the recording and was sent to court where she pleaded guilty to assault and battery. She was sentenced a maximum three years in prison and her name was placed on a registry for child abusers, meaning that she will never work with children again. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Former soldier Jon Lewis Alexander pulls gun on liquor store robber [REAL FOOTAGE]

00:55
A would-be robber got the scare of his life after an Iraq veteran clerk pulled a gun on him during an attempted run on the cash register at a liquor store in Marionville, Missouri. The unidentified man walked into Beer:30 smoking a cigarette. Security-camera footage shows the clerk, 54-year-old Jon Lewis Alexander, gesturing for him to leave, as smoking is not allowed inside the store. The suspect then pulled a gun on Alexander and demanded all the cash in the machine. What the young man didn't realize, however, was that the silver-haired store clerk served four tours in Iraq and worked as a prison guard and bounty hunter. (Yes, a bounty hunter.) So he wasn't someone you trifle with. The other key detail the kid missed was that Alexander was also packing heat! He was carrying a Walther PPX 9mm handgun in a holster strapped to his back. So when this punk rolled up, smoking in a non-smoking space, using foul language and flinging a gun around, the silver-streaked BAMF wasn't going to have any of it. He batted down the boy's gun-wielding left arm in one swift move, then smooth-like-butter, he grabbed his own piece with his other hand and rammed it in guy's face. And not just rammed it in his face, but pushed it into his mouth far enough for the cops to swab it for DNA. And it all happened in like 11 seconds. The kid learned quick that he was in over his head and got out of there lickety-split, dragging his battered ego behind him. The cops are looking for the suspect and the owners of the shop are like so happy they hired this bad ass. Also, G.I. Joe said he didn't want to tell his old lady about what happened, but she found out anyway and when she got home, she gave him "all kinds of lovin'". -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. The 'Iron Man' armor suit gives soldiers gives soldiers super-human strength

01:17
Originally published on October 15, 2013 The U.S. Special Operations Command (Ussocom) called on scientists to develop a lightweight smart suit using kevlar and nanotechnology that functions as a 'practical exoskeleton' to protect soldiers from shrapnel and bullets. The Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS) -- named after the mythological Greek automaton made of bronze that Zeus assigned to protect his lover Europa -- will give the wearer super-human strength and protect soldiers from intensive combat situations. Professor Gareth McKinley, who has been working on his 'liquid armour' technology for 11 years, said the suit sounds like Iron Man. The suit can monitors a soldier's heart rate, hydration levels and core temperature and respond to the data, supplied by an on-board computer hooked up to sensors, to keep a soldier in the best conditions for battle by providing heat, air conditioning and oxygen. The armor can also transform from a more liquid form to a solid in a fraction of a second under the influence of a magnetic field or electric current. If a soldier is wounded, the suit monitor their health and even stop bleeding using a "wound stasis" program such as one being developed by DARPA that sprays foam onto open injuries. The hydraulics powered exoskeletons can attached on soldiers' arms and legs to allow them to carry more gear and run faster than they would on their own. The night vision equipped in the lightweight suit will increase soldiers' mobility at night, while the antennas offer an capacity for communications. Professor McKinley said, "Like all good superheros, Talos has one weakness. For the Army's Talos, the weak spot is either the need to carry around a heavy pump for an hydraulic system, or lots of heavy batteries. We don't have Iron Man's power source yet!" -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Burmese government reveals its haunted new capital Naypyidaw

02:04
Myanmar's junta government became an international joke when they decided to move the capital from Yangon to Naypyidaw in 2005. They spent over 3 billion USD to build this royal prison where everything looks glamorous but at the same time, it's a ghost town. There's only one local market, two shopping malls and two movie theaters. Except the downtown area, the rest of the city looks empty. To opposition parties, this new capital is the military government's own royal prison. The road leading up to the congressional building has more than 20 lanes, which makes it look like a landing strip. The government also sets up numerous defensive emplacements around the presidential compound. Scholars believe that it is the military government's plan to reestablish its authority by moving the capital from the prosperous Yangon to the heavily guarded Naypyidaw. Most of the buildings are built like castles and there is even a moat built around the entire administrative district. Unlike the new capital, most antique buildings in the old capital Yangon are preserved due to the nation's long stagnant economy. According to Moe Moe Lwin, the Director of Yangon Heritage Trust, Myanmar hasn't had much opportunity to develop in the past few decades, meaning antique buildings have been preserved. While modernization is a common goal for many global cities, it usually comes at the cost of wide swaths of architectural heritage. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Daisy Coleman rape: Maryville case reopened after Anonymous demands justice

02:29
Daisy Coleman, the teen at the center of the explosive Maryville, Missouri rape case, may yet find justice after nationwide attention, including pressure from "hacktivist" group Anonymous, forced small-town prosecutor Robert Rice to reopen the case. As part of an effort to help spur a re-examination of the case, Coleman recently recounted her version of events to xoJane.com. On the night of January 7, 2012, the then 14-year-old and her 13-year-old best friend snuck out of her home during a slumber party to meet 17-year-old senior football player Matthew Barnett. He took the pair to his parent's home where he and four friends plied the young girls with shot after shot of vodka. The last thing either remembers is being surrounded by the popular football players, coaxed to drink more and more. Less than an hour later, they discarded Coleman in front of her parent's home. Hearing what sounded like dog scratches hours later, her mother found Coleman lying bruised and half-dressed in below freezing temperatures. Doctors examining a rape kit later confirmed the nightmare scenario Daisy's mother had already been forced to come to grips with. Police quickly rounded up the suspects and recorded their confessions. It seemed as if the Daisy's nightmare would soon be over, but the quaint all-American town of Maryville, Missouri conspired to work against the Coleman family's search for justice. As word of the incident got out, many students at Maryville High School made it known they stood by the accused athletes. Students took to Facebook and Twitter to call her a "whore" and a liar and encouraged her to take her own life. Daisy also found herself suspended from the cheerleading squad for her apparent "role" in the events. She recalls arriving at a dance competition to find a schoolmate sporting a homemade T-shirt reading: Matt 1, Daisy 0. As the member of a prominent political family, support for Barnett also extended into Maryville's adult world. Daisy's mother, Melinda, was sacked for unspecified reasons from her job at a local veterinary clinic. And despite a seeming mountain of evidence, county prosecutor Robert Rice dropped charges, citing insufficient evidence. Even when the family decided they had had enough and decided to leave Maryville, a fire broke out at the home they were trying to sell. The scandal caused outrage online and garnered worldwide attention after hacktivist collective Anonymous, who have helped bring convictions in other rape cases, took up the cause. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Six bodies found in two cars pulled from Lake Foss, Oklahoma

01:09
Six bodies were discovered in two cars found on the bottom of Lake Foss in Oklahoma on Tuesday. The cars, both at least 40 years old, were discovered when the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Marine Enforcement division were conducting training sessions involving new sonar technology. Police pulled up a blue 1969 Camaro white top which matched the description of the car owned by Jimmy Williams, a 16-year-old last seen on November 20, 1970. Reports said he was heading to a football game with two friends, Thomas Rios and Leah Johnson, both 18, but their plans may have changed and they went for a hunting trip instead. No trace of the car, or any of their bodies, was found after that autumn evening. The three bodies in the Camaro are suspected to belong to the missing teenagers. The second car recovered was a 1957 Chevy and it also contained the remains of three people. Police first suspected that the car belonged to a couple last seen in Canute, a town about 10 miles south of the lake, some time in the 1960s. It was later believed, however, that the Chevy was owned by Alvi Porter, a 69-year-old man that went missing in 1969. His granddaughter, Debbie McManamman, said in a television interview that she believed the car to be her grandfather's green Chevy. It is not known who was in the car with him. The highway patrol discovered the vehicles on September 10, then went back on a diving mission to investigate. The cars, which were found next to each other, were pulled out on Tuesday. Internet users from the area have left comments on news sites speculating that the cars may have ended up in that part of the lake due to a particularly dangerous stretch of road near it. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Seattle teen's life saved by 'bulletproof' glasses

01:05
A Seattle teen is surely thanking her optometrist tonight after a one-in-a-million near miss with a stray bullet. Sixteen-year-old Alonza Bryant was in her living room nodding off to sleep while watching TV on the sofa in what was supposed to be just another ordinary evening at her family's home in southern Seattle. Except that some local gang-bangers targeted her home for a drive-by shooting. When the bullets started flying, one struck Alonza in the face, but not before having most of the force deflected by the frame of her glasses. "If I hadn't had my glasses on, I wouldn't be here right now," she says. Her mother, LaVette Bryant, insists that there is no one with any gang affiliation living in the home and wonders why the house was targeted. In any case, they plan to move to a different house. Seattle police are still investigating the scene. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Stowaway death: 22-year-old man found dead after four days in plane's landing gear

01:01
The body of a Georgian man was found on Thursday in the landing gear of an Airbus A-330 at a Moscow airport shortly after the plane arrived from Rimini, Italy. According to reports, the man, 22-year-old Georgian national Giorgio Abduladze, was wearing only shorts and a t-shirt when he climbed into the right landing gear of an I Fly Airbus. The plane took off in the evening, headed to Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. When a plane reaches high altitude, the temperature can drop to around -50 Celsius degrees and oxygen becomes scarce. Stowaway passengers hiding outside the pressurized cabin have little chance of survival and often die from hypothermia and anoxia, lack of oxygen. After landing in Moscow's Vnukovo airport at around 1 a.m., the plane was subject to a post-landing inspection and Abduladze's body was discovered on the gear. According to reports, identifying documents were found in his pockets.A preliminary investigation suggests the body was there for four days and made several flights, RT reported. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Titan Aerospace unveils the world's first solar-powered UAVs

01:13
Originally published on August 26, 2013 Aircraft designer Titan Aerospace unveiled last week its Solara 50 and 60 unmanned aircrafts, the world's first atmospheric satellites powered by the sun with a mission range of over 4 million kilometres. An atmospheric satellite is a drone that can conduct most of the operations of an orbital satellite, but is much cheaper and more versatile. Among the applications of a Solara aircraft there are disaster recovery, weather monitoring, communications relay, oceanographic research and earth imaging. According to reports, Solara 50 and 60 can be launched at night using power from internal battery banks. When the sun rises, the solar panels covering the crafts' wings and tails, store enough energy to allow them ascend to a position of 20 km above the sea level and to stay aloft continuously for five years, without ever having to land and refuel. The aircrafts will operate in an atmospheric sweet spot known as the tropopause where winds are generally less than 5 knots. Despite its massive dimensions, Solara 50 only weighs about 160 kg, and can carry a payload of 32 kg. According to reports, differently from satellites, it is possible to get the payload back at the end of its five years endurance. As for the speed, Solara 50 can travel at 104 kilometres an hour (about 64 MPH). According to reports, smaller versions of Solara have already flown, and Titan Aerospace is planning to start selling operational systems in less than a year which opens up possibilities like regional internet or a version of Google Maps with real-time images. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. 3D-printer: Organovo to manufacture liver tissues

01:26
Originally published on August 21, 2013 San Diego-based company Organovo has developed a bio-printer that can make strips of liver tissue that could be used to test new drugs before they are administered to humans. One of the printer's two syringes is filled with spheroids containing parenchymal liver cells, which are used in assessing the potential toxicity or efficacy of drugs. The second syringe contains bio-ink with non-parenchymal liver cells, which bolster cellular development, and a hydrogel that helps with extrusion. A computer connected to the printer instructs a robotic arm that moves the syringe to print a mold in a honeycomb pattern. A small sensor then determines the placement of the first syringe based on the given coordinates, then parenchymal cells are added to the well plate's mold. After the different cells are mixed, the well plate is placed into an incubator where they continue fusing until they eventually form the complex matrix of a liver tissue." According to Organovo's website, the ultimate goal is to develop living, multicellular human tissues that can be maintained in laboratories for both functional and histological changes in response to injury, pathogens, or treatments. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Paralyzed man's balls eaten by pet dog in Arkansas

01:09
A 39-year-old Trumann, Arkansas man who is paralyzed below the waist woke up Monday morning to find that one of his testicles had been eaten by a "small, white fluffy dog" that he had rescued from the street three weeks before. A "burning pain" in his mid-section is what woke the man up, and he looked down to see his new pet with blood on its muzzle and front feet, chewing on one of his testicles. When the man looked closer, he found that the dog had actually chewed off and eaten one of his testicles. He said that he had never taken the dog to the doctor to get him checked out, so he wasn't sure if it was vaccinated. When police took the canine to see the vet for the first time, it was also its last visit, as the doctor had to put it down. The dog's head was later sent to the health department for testing to make sure it wasn't infected with rabies. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Seattle bus driver beats up passenger who spat in his face

01:04
Seattle bus driver Dennis Echols was fired after he beat up 23-year-old passenger Ethan McKinney for spitting in his face. Echols represents the latest entrant into the Bus Fight Hall of Fame, joining prestigious members like 67-year-old Thomas "Epic Beard Man" Bruso, who opened a can of whoopass on a fellow Oakland, California transit bus passenger. While we here at TomoNews US don't condone Echols' actions, the King County Metro bus driver was faced with a problem public transport employees nationwide know all too well, a passenger who refuses to get off the f***ing bus. McKinney, who for my money was high as a kite, repeatedly told Echols to "kill himself". While Echols quickly lost his temper, sh** only got real after McKinney spat in the 61-year-old's face as he was leaving the bus. Echols reacted by hurling an eight-pound rubber wheel block directly into McKinney's face. He then proceeded to beat the living sh*t out of the guy. Unsurprisingly, the incident cost Echols his job and both men are currently facing assault charges. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Santa Monica College shooting - 5 killed, including gunman

He was also reportedly wearing black cargo pants, a helmet, tactical vest, and an ammunition belt around his waist. The events began in the morning around 11:50 a.m., when at least one resident reportedly saw a man shooting at a house on Yorkshire Avenue. The house then quickly erupted in flames. Police later discovered the bodies of two men inside, who were said to be the gunman's father and brother. After shooting at the house, the gunman went to a street corner where he witnesses say he pointed his rifle at a woman driving down the street, forcing her to stop, then motioned for another car to stop. He then opened fire on the other vehicle, injuring the driver in the shoulder. The gunman went on to carjack a blue Mazda, forcing its driver, Laura Siszk, 41, to drive him to Santa Monica College and let him out. After being forced to put his bag in the back seat of her car, Siszk tried to convince the gunman to simply take her vehicle and let her go. However, he forced her back into the driver's seat. Siszk said that the gunman partially exited the car once at a red light along Pico Boulevard to shoot into the street. Some other reports claim the gunman stopped to shoot into the street on at least two occasions on Pico Boulevard. Passengers on the No. 7 transit bus that was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Cloverfield Boulevard witnessed the gunman shooting up the left side of the bus, injuring several people inside. When Siszk and the gunman reached a dead end at the college, she says she was made to take his bag from the car and leave it on the curb. She then jumped back into the car and drove as far down the street as she could before exiting the vehicle and running. She added that she was physically unhurt. At a parking lot adjacent to the Santa Monica College library, the gunman fired upon a red Ford Explorer SUV, causing it to lose control and crash into a low wall. The driver, a woman, was killed by gunshot wounds to the torso, while the passenger was injured. The gunman then fatally shot a young woman as he made his way into the college library. Students ducked for and ran for safety as he began firing rounds inside the building. Some students reportedly didn't know what was happening immediately because they were wearing headphones. The gunman was finally gunned down in a shootout inside the building with city and college police. Officials carried his body outside onto the sidewalk, where he succumbed to his wounds. Authorities say the entire ordeal lasted only about 10 minutes. Later in the afternoon, a man wearing black sweatshirt with the words "life is a gamble' printed on the back was detained as a person of interest, then released. The gunman's motives for the shootings is still under investigation, although reports say it stemmed from a family dispute. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Powdered water may be answer to drought crisis

00:58
Originally published on July 16, 2013 Solid Rain may just be the answer to millions of farmers plagued by recurring droughts. In its normal state, Solid Rain, made up of an absorbent polymer called potassium polyacrylate, looks like sugar. Potassium polyacrylate transforms from powder state to a clear jelly when mixed with water. It can hold the absorbed water for up to a year. Even when the substance is mixed with soil, water is only released when a plant's roots extract it. This magical powder was created by Mexican chemical engineer Sergio Rico, who has put his invention to solve Mexico's drought problems. Farmers who use Solid Rain are said to have increase their yields by 300 percent. Mexico has been using this product for the past decade, but the world only became aware of it last year, when Solid Rain was approved for sale in the U.S. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Two trains hit car after high-speed police chase in Utah

01:12
Car hit by train twice after police chase in Utah: A 29-year-old woman involved in not one but two train collisions after a high-speed police chase on Sunday morning in Woods Cross, Utah, has escaped with only minor injuries. Woods Cross police responded to an "unwanted guest" disturbance call at Redwood Road address around 8.20 a.m. They received a description of a woman and a black Mercedes. Moments later, the patrolmen spotted the suspect driver on Redwood Road and attempted to pull the vehicle over but the driver fled. Police dashboard camera video shows the black late-model Mercedes speeding in the direction of a level train crossing and colliding with a passing freight train. One officer then tried to pull the woman free but a second running on a parallel track train slammed into the back of her vehicle pushing it along the track. It remained trapped for several hours after the woman was freed. The woman, un-named in media reports, was rushed to hospital with a broken arm. Police haven't confirmed whether she was under the influence of alcohol. She faces charges of evading arrest. || Watch more crazy police car chases videos here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5_Zg40DC3OEoe-60fHIcvR5jV_4Lns2C -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Coca-Cola transforms shipping container 'Ekocenter' to purify water

01:07
Originally published on October 21, 2013 Coca‑Cola has teamed up with DEKA R&D to purify drinking water in developing countries. The project, dubbed as Ekocenter, transformed from a 20-foot shipping container, uses 'Slingshot' technology that will help bring clean and drinking water to communities in need. Slingshot is a vapor compression distillation system which boils contaminated water, separates out the clean water by vaporizing it. It then allows the pure water to condense and be collected, flushing out contaminants. The system is able to deliver 850 liters of clean and safe drinking water daily at the electricity cost of less than a hair dryer (1kWh). It is also anticipated that Ekocenter opened in developing communities will act as a central hub where it will provide residents with wireless communication, electricity, vaccination storage, sanitation and more tailored to address community needs. Coca-Cola has opened an Ekocenter test site in Heidelberg, South Africa, and is hoping to set up 1,500 to 2,000 Ekocenters in 20 countries, covering regions such as Africa, Asia, North America, and Latin America by the end of 2015. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Drinking three liters of water a day gives you younger skin: study

01:13
Drinking three liters of water a day wil help you look younger and prettier, according to the results of an experiment carried out by 42-year-old British reporter, Sarah Smith. After years of suffering from headaches and poor digestion, Smith's neurologist and nutritionist suggested she drink up to three litres of liquid a day to improve her body function. Two weeks after beginning the water therapy, her chronic headaches had vanished and her skin had improved. After a month, her skin was lustrous and she had shed two pounds. The doctor points out that our kidneys, which filter waste products from the blood before turning it to urine, will quickly enjoy the benefits of a good flushing. The extra fluid also allows skin cells to regenerate more efficiently. Smith said she now feels fitter, leaner and healthier, and her husband and friends say she looks ten years younger. "Whatever happens, I am going to keep on drinking three litres of water a day - and would advise every woman to do the same (after checking with her doctor, of course)", she wrote in the Daily Mail, a newspaper. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. YouTube censorship? Wild Games Studio accused of blocking negative video review

02:13
Game developer Wild Games Studio is in crisis mode after using YouTube's copyright complaint system to remove an unfavorable review. Game reviewer TotalBiscuit aka The Cynical Brit posted a negative review of the Wild Games Studio's newest release, "Day One: Garry's Incident" to YouTube. In the 21-minute review, he said the game "just runs awfully... The combat is so incredibly bad. It's mind-boggling awful... This is the definition of terrible." Wild Games Studio promptly initiated a copyright claim on YouTube against the negative review. This is serious to the YouTube content creator, as a channel can be shut down if it accumulates three copyright strikes. The incident has now turned into an internet war. TotalBiscuit tweeted: "I should point out that this is a game I was sent review code for, it was also the top-ranked video on YouTube for that game." Wild Games Studios responded in defense of their action: "We protected our copyright because TotalBiscuit has no right to make advertising revenues with our license." TotalBiscuit's response to the response? He tweeted: "BULLLLSHITTTTT." Meanwhile, other reviews of the same game are still live on YouTube. TotalBiscuit posted a new video on Sunday detailing his frustration with the game developer. He posted their original correspondence, the copyright disputes, lays out exactly why he should be protected by Fair Use, and makes a case for the alleged abuse of the YouTube system by Wild Games Studios. That video is now the #1 video relating to the game. The original video has been copied and uploaded by another user on DailyMotion. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. 3D-printed Cortex Exoskeleton may be the future of orthopedic casts

00:50
Originally published on October 30, 2013 A design for a 3D-printed cast has been dubbed one of the finalists for the 2013 James Dyson Award. The cast, called the Cortex Exoskeleton and designed by Jake Evill, is meant to be more flexible and convenient than traditional orthopedic plaster casts. The technology aims at providing more structured support for broken limbs while also remaining lighter and more durable than currently used casts made of plaster or polyurethane. Traditional casts are generally problematic in that they are susceptible to water, so wearers have trouble bathing, which can lead to hygiene issues. Such casts are also itchy, uncomfortable and inconvenient. The Cortex Exoskeleton would be created using 3D printing technology to ensure that it fits well over a broken limb, with an extra membrane structure around the point of injury. Newly printed Cortex casts would be left unfastened so that it can snaps shut around the affected limb. The waterproof nature of the material and its design allows washing to be possible without taking the cast off. It is also thin enough for clothing to fit over it. According to Evill, his design addresses the growing issue of medical waste and a rising number of fractures and breaks. The winner of the James Dyson Award will be announced within a week. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. However, most people are unaware of the fact that there is an even bigger rock still teetering on the edge of the mountain, ready to tumble down 150 meters into the 75 or so homes and shops below. The second boulder weighs about 2,000 tons, which is roughly equivalent to the weight of 200 fully grown African elephants. To prevent the boulder from tumbling down the mountain, experts plan to bore holes into the large rock and inject it with a material that will gradually expand. When this happens, the material will crack and shatter the rock from the inside, breaking it into much more manageable pieces that can be hauled away. The first boulder came crashing down the mountain on August 31 when heavy rains loosened the dirt underneath the humongous rock. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Singapore killer cop: Kovan double murder suspect appears in court

00:52
Originally published on July 15, 2013 The policeman accused of the murder of a father and son in Singapore last week appeared in court today where he was charged with two counts of murder. Sergeant Iskandar Bin Rahmat was arrested in Johor Bahru on Friday, two days after the dramatic scenes that resulted in the death of Tan Chee Heong, 40, and the discovery of the body of his father Tan Boon Hee, 67, at his home in Hillside Drive. Tan Chee Heong, 40, was run over by his father's car and dragged down a busy road for around a kilometer before coming unstuck near Kovan MRT station. Police arriving at the scene then followed the trail of blood to the family house on Hillside Drive, where they found the body of his father, Tan Boon Hee, who had been fatally stabbed. Prime suspect Iskandar Bin Rahmat then fled across the border into Malaysia, where he was arrested on Friday evening. The motive for the murder is unclear, but Bin Rahmat was heavily in debt. The two reportedly became acquainted last November after Bin Rahmat worked on a case concerning the theft of a safety deposit box belonging to Tan. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. A stomach bug struck 26 students during a Qantas flight from Chile to Australia and left them vomiting and suffering from diarrhea throughout much of the 14-hour flight from Santiago to Sydney. The group, who are believed to have all been travelling together, contracted the norovirus prior to departure, according to Qantas. Symptoms of the infection only became evident midway through the flight. The 26 ill passengers were moved to the rear of the plane where four lavatories were located. Upon arrival in Sydney, 16 of the passengers required hospitalization, three of whom had to be carried from the plane on stretchers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Bizarre side effect of liver disease leaves woman looking pregnant

01:23
A TV show on British broadcaster BBC 3 has featured a woman whose years of binge drinking finally caught up with her and delivered cruel revenge in the form of a dying and diseased liver hidden within a grotesquely bloated abdomen. The woman, identified only as Jo in the program, has told how her condition has made her look heavily pregnant. Assuming she was with child, strangers in her town would ask her when the baby's due. But Jo's baby is actually a horribly scarred, cirrotic liver. The swelling is caused by a buildup of fluids containing both waste and nutrients which her ruined liver can no longer process. Now sober, Jo was once a champion drinker, often putting away three bottles of wine a day. Unknown to the now 35-year-old, the booze was poisoning her, slowly as her liver's healthy tissue became replaced with scar tissue. She must now to go to the hospital every few weeks to have the fluid drained through a needle and hose. The disgusting procedure can take eight hours and yield as much as 23 liters. Jo's liver cirrhosis is irreversible. All that can save her long-term is a liver transplant, and there's no guarantee she'll even survive that. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Boston subway rescue: three men leap onto tracks to rescue fallen rider

01:21
Three men at the North Station orange line sprang into action after a Malden resident fell onto the train tracks, all of which was captured by MBTA video cameras. The fallen rider, who earlier in the evening celebrated passing his medical boards with two drinks, does not recall anything about the episode. Lucky for him, he had three heroes to rescue him. The incident took place at about 9pm on Wednesday. The doctor can be seen approaching the yellow safety line and takes what appears to be a flying leap onto the tracks. His fellow passengers react with horror. One lady swings her handbag in an effort to signal any inbound trains. A man tries to get the fallen rider's attention by clapping his hands. Two more men leap into action, jumping down onto the tracks. A third man crosses from the other side of the subway platform to assist, in the process taking precarious steps around the electrified third rail. Off camera, MBTA workers are notified and an emergency alarm is activated. This prevents any trains from pulling into station. But the three heroes don't know that. They braved the possibility of oncoming trains and risked their lives to rescue someone they didn't know. All three men lift the fallen rider back onto the subway platform. Despite the actions of the three heroes, the MBTA does not encourage passengers to jump down on the subway tracks. The right course of action, they say, is to sound the alarm with MBTA workers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Organ trafficking: 6-year-old's eyes stolen by organ traffickers in China

01:22
Eyes gouged out in Chinese black market organ harvesting atrocity: In a shocking case of human cruelty, a young boy from China's northern Shanxi province was kidnapped near his home only to be found hours later wailing in pain with his eyes gouged out, in what appears to be an attack carried out by illegal organ traffickers. The 6-year-old boy named Bin Bin is a resident of Linfen. According to his mother, the child went into the street near his house to play sometime between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m on August 24. An hour or two later she called him inside, but he was nowhere to be found. A farmer found the young boy in a field hours later, his eye sockets empty. Police found the child's eyes nearby, the corneas had been removed. "He had blood all over his face. His eyelids were turned inside out. And inside, his eyeballs were not there," the boy's distraught father told a local TV crew. En route to hospital, Bin Bin told his father what he remembered. His fragmented story tells of a woman who drugged him before cutting his eyes out. Bin Bin's father told reporters the woman said to Bin Bin, "Don't cry. Don't cry, and I won't gouge out your eyes." Corneas for corrective eyesight surgery are in high demand as they can be taken from people of any age and blood type. "Anyone who knows where the corneas are located in the eye can extract them," said Professor Arthur Caplan, a spokesman for Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting in an interview with the UK's Daily Mail. With massive demand for organs in China - around 300,00 each year - and only limited supply, a thriving illegal organ trade has developed. Childrens' organs fetch a higher price, one organ trader told Chinese media in 2010. "Most people think the younger the donor is, the better the quality of organs," the unnamed trafficker said. Police have offered a 100,000 RMB (US$16,000) reward for information leading to the capture of the suspect. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Nebraska Jail to Offer Cells as Hotel Rooms

01:01
The new Lancaster County Corrections Facility in Lincoln, Nebraska will allow law-abiding citizens to pay to become a voluntary inmate when it begins renting out cells for a single night this week. For $30 a night, the prison will open up hundreds of beds to people who wish to experience a day in the life of a prisoner: having their mugshot taken, receiving a prison jumpsuit and a tour of the facilities. With all proceeds going to the nonprofit Child Advocacy Center, paid-up voluntary inmates will have to be in their cells at 10:00 pm for lockdown with lights out occurring one hour later. After a cozy night spent on one of the prison's genuine 4-inch thick mattresses, inmates will be woken up bright and early at 6:00 am for breakfast and promptly sent on their way. Prison officials said that the event has raised over $600 thus far and that they will donate a check in one month's time. Stripper's $1 million seized, police forced to repay with interest

01:10
Californian stripper Tara Mishra, who had $1 million in cash seized by police on suspicion it was drug money, will get her life savings back after a federal judge ordered it be repaid to the 33-year-old, saying there was no indication it was illegally earned. Back in 2012, Mishra's friends, Rajesh and Marina Dheri, were driving her cash across country when Nebraska State Troopers booked them for speeding. Officers then got permission to search the car. In the back, they found two bags filled with cash, and arrested the Dheri's, believing it could be drug money. But Mishra had been shaking her money-maker since since she was 18, and claimed the more than $1m in cash was squirreled away over her 15-year stripping career. She said the money was for her half of a New Jersey nightclub venture with the Dehri's, as she was done with stripping. Documents confirmed her story and no strong link to drugs was found. The judge finally ordered all $1,074,900 of Mishra's stripper money to be repaid, plus the interest she missed out on in the intervening year. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Survive cold water: Hydros flotation vest saves your life and keeps you warm

01:17
Originally published on October 17, 2013 Kieran Normoyle, 23, an Irish design student from University of Limerick, invented a three-piece lifejacket, Hydros, that mitigates the effects of cold water shock, sea spray, hypothermia and secondary drowning. Hydros is a finalist for the James Dyson Award, an international design award competed by university-age design engineers for a $45,000 cash prize. With experience as a lifeguard and Irish Army Reserve medic, Normoyle aimed at overcoming the flaws of existing life vests and other personal flotation devices (PFDs). The three-piece lifejacket include a thermal T-shirt, flotation vest and wet jacket. A self-heating gel pack inside the thermal T-shirt lies over the heart and major arteries to warm up the core of body, reducing cold water shock and delaying hypothermia. The flotation vest can be activated automatically on contact with water or manually. The bladder inside with offset design can turn faced-down users upright in water, while the hood protect user's airway from sea spray. Using wetsuit effect, the wet jacket will help retain warmth when in the water. "The versatility of Hydros allows the user to adapt and upgrade the suit to the environment they are operating in," wrote Normoyle in an email to NBC News. "For instance, if I am going kayaking I put on the T-shirt first before I depart; when I arrive at the location, depending on the environment, cold and wet versus warm and sunny, I can choose whether I need the jacket or not." -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Wearable translator glasses unveiled in Japan at Ceatec 2013

00:52
Originally published on October 3, 2013 NTT DoCoMo, Japan's biggest mobile network operator, unveiled its "Intelligent Glass," prototype glasses that perform nearly instant translation of written text and a variety of other tasks, at Ceatec, a technology trade show based in Tokyo. Text is captured by a camera mounted on the device and sent to a cloud server to be analyzed in real time. The translated text is then sent back to the device. This process takes around five seconds for the prototype. The head-mounted display can translate between Japanese, English, both traditional and simplified Chinese, and Korean. It also features facial recognition software, which is able to provide a sort of virtual business card service for any previously inputted names and titles. DoCoMo also introduced a ring that when used with the glasses can turn a flat surface such as a book or a pad of paper into a virtual tablet computer. The ring tracks your finger movements and allows you to play music, watch movies and check the time or weather, among other tasks. The Japanese company says it hopes to have the device ready for foreigners travelling to Tokyo during the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Bullet bounces of man's head! Florida man survives headshot

01:00
A lucky Florida grandfather survived being hit by a stray bullet in the head while driving last Thursday. Walter Santiago, 62, said he heard a bang and then felt pain on the side of his head. He thought something may have broken off his car and flown in through the open window, until his granddaughter saw blood coming down from his forehead. "You've been shot," she said. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office said a bullet, most likely fired from far away, came through the window and glanced off Santiago's head just above his left temple. Santiago was driving at the time because he had just picked up his 13-year-old granddaughter from school. He was travelling east on State Road 54 near Bruce Lane with his driver's side window open about 4 to 5 inches when he was struck by the bullet at around 12:15pm. Santiago received six stitches at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman Doug Tobin said the bullet must have been fired from far away because the bullet glanced off Santiago's head and bounced around after entering the vehicle. The bullet came through the window on a downward trajectory, Tobin said. It hit the car's seat near Santiago's right thigh after bouncing off his head. The bullet then bounced up and cracked the front windshield before coming to rest on the passenger's side floor board, the spokesman said. The police said the bullet was most likely fired from a high-caliber handgun. No one has been arrested yet. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Fukushima radioactive waste stored in children's playgrounds by local government

01:14
Radioactive waste has been left lying around in children's playgrounds by the prefectural government at housing estates in Japan's Fukushima Prefecture in areas where children could have been easily exposed to it, according to reports in Japanese media. At total of 950 bags of radioactive waste are believed to have been improperly stored at five housing estates in the Japanese city of Shirakawa in Fukushima Prefecture. According to national safety standards, the contaminated waste must be covered in mud in a fenced-off area to shield passersby from exposure. But the waste was left uncovered, resulting in radiation levels that were 10 times higher than the highest readings allowed under national safety standards. After news of the poorly managed storage of radioactive waste received significant coverage in Japanese media, the Fukushima Prefectural Government took action and fenced off the storage areas with plates and nets. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Harvard student who made bomb threat to miss finals arrested

01:11
A Harvard student was arrested and charged on Tuesday with making a bomb threat that caused the evacuation of four buildings and disrupted the university during final exams, the U.S. Attorney's office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Eldo Kim, a 20-year-old Harvard psychology undergrad majoring in psychology, allegedly sent e-mails to Harvard University police, university officials and others Monday morning warning of "shrapnel bombs" set in specific locations around the campus, according to an FBI affidavit. Kim is set to appear in federal court to face the charges on Wednesday. It took about 20 minutes before the fake threat caused the evacuations of four buildings. Emerson, Sever and Thayer halls were cleared out in Harvard Yard in addition to the Science Center just beyond the yard. President Obama was briefed, and oh yeah, Kim's final was canceled. Meanwhile, the FBI, ATF, US Secret Service, Harvard University Police, Cambridge Police, Boston Police and Massachusetts State Police all converged on Harvard Yard. Kim tried to mask his identity by using the anonymous email service Guerrilla Mail and TOR to hide his IP address. But by nightfall he was already confessing to an FBI agent. As well as being a dancer with the Harvard Breakers, a bio on a Harvard website identifies Kim as a research assistant studying "partisan taunting," whatever the hell that is. Kim now faces five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Upside: no more exams. Downside: prison showers. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Small-scale gold mining exposes thousands to mercury poisoning

01:12
Originally published on September 20, 2013 Next month 140 countries will sign the U.N. Minamata Convention, which aims to regulate the use of mercury to reduce rates of contamination in countries where small-scale gold miners operate. The convention is named after the world's biggest mass mercury poisoning, which occurred 60 years ago in Japan. The cause of the poisoning was identified only 30 years later as a local plastics factory that was dumping mercury into a nearby bay. Mercury is a neurotoxin that affects the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls movement. It also harms the kidneys and other organs. Hand tremors, coordination problems and headaches are among the early symptoms of mercury intoxication, which can also cause birth defects. Small-scale miners, who are responsible for producing about 15 percent of the world's gold, typically use mercury to extract gold from rock or soil, putting themselves and the environment at risk of mercury poisoning. Approximately 10 to 15 million people are involved in the practice worldwide, including 3 million in Indonesia. Miners wash crushed gold ore with mercury by rivers with their bare hands, poisoning themselves and waterways. Afterwards the gold, now an amalgam of mercury and gold, is brought to smelters which burn away the mercury, poisoning people and the environment nearby. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news.
