Today, U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) spoke on the Senate floor in support of extending benefits for the unemployed. Following his speech, the Senate voted on a proposal he offered along with Jack Reed (D-RI) to extend unemployment benefits for three months. Heller Honors Nevada’s Fallen Heroes on Memorial Day
In honor of Memorial Day, U.S. Senator Dean Heller recorded a video address to pay tribute to Nevada’s fallen heroes. The full transcript is available below: President Ronald Reagan once said that “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.” These words particularly resonate on Memorial Day when we pause to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedoms. Driven by courage, these men and women had moms and dads of their own. They had sons and daughters, loved ones, neighbors, friends. But they selflessly stepped up to the plate. These are the people whose character embodies the American spirit. The people who demonstrate the greatest love a person can have by laying down their lives for our country. I believe that the best way that we can honor what they did for us is to care of those who are still with us here today. That’s why as a senior member of the U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I am fighting each day to see that Nevada’s 300,000 veterans receive the benefits they’ve earned. Since the beginning of last year, ten of my bills to help veterans have been signed into law. That includes legislation to ensure veterans can continue to receive life-saving surgeries and care near their homes. I’m also proud to report that just last week, we sent bipartisan legislation that I helped write to the President’s desk. It’s called the VA MISSION Act, and it gives veterans the decision-making power that they deserve to get the care that works for them, on their schedules, near their homes. So how will it help? Here’s an example. A few weeks ago, a veteran from Gardnerville contacted me and said he prefers to see a doctor at the clinic one mile down the road from his home, but even under the Choice Act – he’s forced to travel 100 miles roundtrip to see a cardiologist and a foot doctor. That doesn’t make any sense, and it is exactly what the VA MISSION Act aims to fix. I believe that the ongoing fight to care for Nevada’s veterans is my duty and my responsibility as your United States Senator. I won’t be satisfied until the VA delivers on its promise to them. Every day that I’m in Washington, D.C., I pass by the Iwo Jima Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. This is a humbling reminder of the valiant men and women from across this nation who have answered the call of duty in two World Wars, the wars in Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan, and numerous other conflicts waged to keep America free. On Memorial Day in particular, we are all reminded that freedom is not free. I join Nevadans and Americans around the country in reflecting on the lives of the men and women whom we owe a debt that can never be repaid. May God bless our troops, and may He continue to bless our great country – a country that is so great because of those who serve. Thank you.
